Another Day in Paradise ( We Gave Each Other Something That Day)

(We Gave Each Other Something That Day)(那天我们互相给了对方一些东西)

"Another Day in Paradise" is a song written and recorded by English drummer and singer Phil Collins.

A protest song released as the 7th track of 4th album 'But Seriously' in October 1989.

Interestingly, the song was the last #1 of the 1980’s and the first of the 1990’s.

Collins explained this song was about despairing the homeless in multiple interviews:

To The Mail On Sunday: “I wrote this after being in Washington DC where I was amazed by how many people I saw living in boxes.”

In a Musician interview: “I remember when we played Washington… Washington was almost at a standstill and these people were trying to sleep on the grills where all the hot air was coming up, and you could see that it was in the shadow of Capitol Hill. I thought it was an extraordinary contradiction.”

However, Collins was criticized by the English news for writing a song about the poor despite being wealthy. He responded in a New York Times interview: “When I drive down the street, I see the same things everyone else sees. It’s a misconception that if you have a lot of money you’re somehow out of touch with reality.”

Born : Philip David Charles Collins, January 30, 1951, Wandsworth, London, England

Age: 73 years

Occupation: Musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, actor

Years active: 1963–2011, 2015–present.

Amazingly, I still had enough change to buy my coffee.

My situation must really have seemed almost like paradise to him. To be finished with the job search process. To be done with standing in line with five-hundred and fifty other people for a handful of positions. To have the interviews behind me. To actually have some funds coming in. To have already received a paycheck. He had a bed for an extended but limited period of time in a residential shelter. There are so many others who don't even have that.

Just think about all of the others who don't have a bed in a shelter. Think about those who want a better life but can't get into the right position at the right time to make it work.

Think about the mentally-challenged who would not hurt anyone but who are wandering the streets without anyone to assist them because not enough people are helping. Think about all of those who fall through the cracks, because not enough people are helping. Think about the elderly on the streets.

Think about those who are hungry and want something to eat but no one gives them a dollar because they decide that the person just wants a drink of wine. Think about those who were cheated and mistreated and are now living homeless as a result of it. Think about the veterans who are homeless and the mothers with children who don't have anywhere to sleep at night. Think about the children who are absolutely alone on the streets everywhere in the world...

Remember those who are struggling and who are less fortunate than you. The numbers are exploding and most of them don't want to be homeless and jobless. Reach out today. Help someone. If you can help one person one time in your life, you have done a lot.

Another Day in Paradise Lyrics

[Verse 1]

She calls out to the man on the street

"Sir, can you help me?

It's cold and I've nowhere to sleep

Is there somewhere you can tell me?"

He walks on, doesn't look back

He pretends he can't hear her

Starts to whistle as he crosses the street

Seems embarrassed to be there

[Chorus]

Oh, think twice

'Cause it's another day

For you and me in paradise

Oh, think twice

'Cause it's another day for you

You and me in paradise

[Post-Chorus]

Think about it

[Verse 2]

She calls out to the man on the street

He can see she's been crying

She's got blisters on the soles of her feet

She can't walk, but she's trying

[Chorus]

Oh, think twice

'Cause it's another day

For you and me in paradise

Oh, think twice

It's just another day for you

You and me in paradise

[Post-Chorus]

Just think about it

[Bridge]

Oh, Lord

Is there nothing more anybody can do?

Oh, Lord

There must be something you can say

[Verse 3]

You can tell from the lines on her face

You can see that she's been there

Probably been moved on from every place

'Cause she didn't fit in there

[Chorus]

Oh, think twice

'Cause it's another day

For you and me in paradise

Oh, think twice

It's just another day for you

You and me in paradise

[Outro]

Just think about it

Mhm, think about it

[Outro]

It's just another day

For you and me in paradise

It's just another day

For you and me in paradise (Para—, paradise)

Paradise (It's just another day for you and me)

Uh, just think about it (In paradise)

Paradise (It's just another day for you and me)

Just think about it (In paradise, para—, paradise)

It's just in paradise (It's just another day for you and me)

Mhm, paradise (In paradise)

Paradise, just another day (It's just another day for you and me)

Think about it (In paradise, para—, paradise)

We Gave Each Other Something That Day

Just Another Day To Give

We Gave Each Other Something That Day

Many years ago on a bus, I sat down beside a 40-ish, clean-cut, well-spoken man who offered me his neatly folded newspaper.

I brightly replied, "Thank you. I need this today!" I am a woman of color and he was white. This is only significant in that I am always grateful for cross-cultural friendliness wherever I find it because there is so much hatred and prejudice still being practiced and promoted.

After I accepted the newspaper with a smile, he replied, "I picked it up at TCC."

"Do you want some change for it," I offered.

"No," he replied. "They set them out for free." After a pause, he humorously said, "I can always use a little change. No, just kidding."

I laughed and said, "We can all use a little change, sometimes. You take classes at TCC," I inquired, assuming that he was enrolled in some MBA-type program or something.

"No, I stay at the Union Mission," he quietly replied.

"Oh," I said, thinking how sad but restful his spirit seemed.

"I work two part-time jobs," I confessed. "They are both minimum wage and it's difficult to get on my feet."

"It's hard for everyone, isn't it?" he empathized.

I began to dig in my purse for change, because not only have I had a desire to help others from my teenaged years but also because I've been in various types of financial and employment struggles. I have empathy for others who are struggling.

He said quickly and quietly, "Oh, you don't have to do that," as he waved his hand from side to side.

"But will you accept it anyway," I quietly pleaded.

"Yes," he said with purpose.

(I grabbed as much change 🪙 🪙 🪙 as my hand could hold.)

The bus was slowing for my stop and I grasped as much change as my fingers could touch. It felt like a lot of quarters and I was touch. It felt like a lot of quarters and I was glad.

As I warmly placed them in his open hand, In felt his spirit soar as he looked down at his palm. He seemed so happy about that handful of change and I felt the angels singing.

When he said "God bless you," I really felt the blessings of God being bestowed upon me. I just felt it, and spoke the same blessing to him.

(I really needed the newspaper that morning.)

As I got up, I said, "See you around."

"Certainly," he said, or something like that.

As I walked to the McDonald's to get my cup of coffee, I was happy to have the paper to read. I reflected on how much I seemed to have in the eyes of that man. I actually had not just one job but two compared to his none. They were both retail and didn't even make up 35 hours a week but how blessed I must have seemed to him.

Suddenly, I thought I probably don't have enough money  for the cup of coffee I was so looking forward to. I had given him a lot of my small change and was not thinking about my coffee. When I got inside, I found that I still had enough change for the coffee and then some. I had not even considered the amount that I was giving him when I dug into my purse. I just wanted him to have it. In doing so, I was provided for.

(Amazingly, I still had enough small change to buy my coffee.)

What Does “Another Day In Paradise” mean to you?

“For me, Phil Collins’ ‘Another Day in Paradise’ is a passionate and sensitive song which tackles societal issues way beyond that of homelessness. It serves as a poignant reminder that we can’t turn a blind eye to the suffering of those in need, and that we all have a responsibility to contribute in our own unique ways to positive change in the world.” – Sam

“This song is a constant reminder not to judge people who are less fortunate than we are because life can be unpredictable, and we can find ourselves in a similar situation to theirs at any time.

It encourages me to be empathetic and compassionate towards others who are going through a rough patch in their lives.” – Amankwa

“I was privileged to watch Phil Collins perform this song live during his 2019 ‘The Not Dead Yet Tour’ at Chase Center in San Francisco, it was indeed an unforgettable experience for me. Despite having recently undergone surgery and having to perform while sitting in a chair, his performance gave me goosebumps. Even though he faced physical challenges, he delivered an incredible performance that left a lasting impression on me.” — Sofi.

Credits for “Another Day in Paradise”

“Another Day in Paradise” was written entirely by Phil Collins. Regarding the song’s production, Collins worked with his longtime collaborator, Hugh Padgham, to produce it.

The song’s backing vocals are performed by the late American singer David Crosby (who was once a very close friend of Phil).

Collins played both the drums and keyboard on the song.

Contrary to popular belief, Collins’ longtime friend and collaborator Daryl Stuermer did not play on this song. Who played the guitar then? Renowned Argentine-born guitarist Dominic Miller played guitars on this track.

Release Date of “Another Day in Paradise”

The song was first released in the United Kingdom on 23rd October, 1989. It was the first single released from Collins’ highly successful fourth solo studio album …But Seriously.

Achievements

Over the years, this track has been the recipient of a number of major music awards. Some of these prestigious awards include a Grammy Award and a BRIT Award.

Collins and Crosby performed the song live at the 33rd Grammy Awards. The performance was not only regarded as one of the best performances at that year’s Grammys but also gained a spot on the Grammy’s Greatest Moments Volume I album which came out in 1994.

“Another Day in Paradise” peaked at the number 1 spot in many countries including Germany, Italy, Canada and Sweden. On the US Billboard Hot 100, the track reached number 1. On the UK Singles Chart, it peaked at number 2.

In addition to “Another Day in Paradise” being the first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 in the 1990s, the song is also Collins’ seventh and final single to reach the No. 1 spot in the United States.

Another Day in Paradise” is considered one of the greatest songs ever written. It was placed at the 86th spot on Billboard’s Greatest Songs of All Time in 2009.

Over the years, several singers have covered the song. One of the most notable covers of this song was done by American singers Brandy and Ray J in 2001.

Collins is Criticized

In addition to being praised for the song, Collins has also received heavy criticism over its subject matter. Many of Collins’ critics have accused him of not having the right to sing about poor people because of his enormous wealth.

According to his critics, he was just exploiting the plights of the poor to sell records. Collins however, rubbished the criticisms in an interview with the New York Times saying that just because one has loads of money doesn’t make one get out of touch with reality.

“Another Day in Paradise” at the Grammy Awards

This tune was nominated for as many as four Grammy Awards during the 33rd Annual Grammy Awards in 1991, winning one. The song received a nomination in the following categories at the Grammys:
