Letter 5

Dear Aaron
It has been so many years since we wrote to each other and I wonder if you are still building houses - I'll probably be in the market for one to be built! At last, something exciting has happened in my life. Mum and Dad have decided that it's time for me to get married now that I'm sixteen and they have found a really nice girl for me. She's the daughter of a distant relative who lives near Hebron. Her name is Hanna and she's a year younger than me. We've met a few times but always with her mother. She went up to Jerusalem with her parents last year for the festival and watched some young guy really explaining the Torah to the chief priest and priests in the temple. Seems they were really impressed even though he was only a kid. She thinks he must be twelve or thirteen and she said he was really nice - should I be jealous?
Hanna and I should be getting married in the autumn provided I have the new room ready for her, and I want you come over for the wedding and be the best man. Dad has already started getting things in for it - we are fattening up some of the sheep which think all their birthdays have come at once but they will have a shock when they find out why! I think Dad will be coming over to see Uncle Simon, your Dad, to ask him formally to come to the wedding but I wanted to ask you myself.
Dad has bought us a bed and a table from the carpenter chappie, Joseph, way north in Nazareth, we've been over to see him quite a few times over the years and even had supper with his family once. They've two kids there, the youngest is a real pain and is called James but the other one is called Jesus and is really nice and very, very clever. He actually made our bed and told me that we will have four children in it, three boys and a girl! We'll see! Jesus' Mum is really nice and said something along the lines of 'if he said it, it will happen'. A little odd that! Dad reckons that there is some sort of scandal in her past which no-one talks about but wouldn't say what it was. I wonder if it has something to do with his dad? Jesus mentioned 'his father' while Joseph was sitting next to him at the table so I wonder if Joseph isn't really his dad. Anyway, I didn't have to carry the bed since we borrowed one of the new-fangled we took it in donkey carts from a cart owner is Bethany — we took it in turns riding on the cart on the way up north but it hacked off the donkey when we all sat on it at once and he refused to budge - it's the way with donkeys!
Dad says that he has arranged to buy some wine from a guy on the Mount of Olives so I suppose we will be renting the donkey-cart again - I'm looking forward to that trip, we've always gone up the Jordan valley when we go north so going into the mountains will be new for us!
I'm going to have to cut this letter short since Hanna and her Mum have just arrived in the village and are staying in Moshe's neighbour's brother's inn — guess where I'm going?

עברו כל כך הרבה שנים מאז שכתבנו אחד לשני ואני תוהה אם אתם עדיין בונים בתים – אני כנראה אהיה בשוק שייבנה אחד! סוף סוף קרה משהו מרגש בחיי. אמא ואבא החליטו שהגיע הזמן להתחתן עכשיו כשאני בן שש עשרה והם מצאו בחורה ממש נחמדה בשבילי. היא בת של קרוב משפחה רחוק שגר ליד חברון. קוראים לה חנה והיא צעירה ממני בשנה. נפגשנו כמה פעמים אבל תמיד עם אמה. היא עלתה לירושלים עם הוריה בשנה שעברה לפסטיבל וצפתה באיזה בחור צעיר באמת מסביר את התורה לכהן הראשי ולכוהנים בבית המקדש. נראה שהם ממש התרשמו למרות שהוא היה רק ילד. היא חושבת שהוא חייב להיות בן שתים עשרה או שלוש עשרה והיא אמרה שהוא ממש נחמד - אני צריך לקנא?
האנה ואני אמורים להתחתן בסתיו בתנאי שיהיה לי את החדר החדש מוכן עבורה, ואני רוצה שתבוא לחתונה ותהיה האיש הכי טוב. אבא כבר התחיל להכניס דברים בשביל זה - אנחנו משמינים כמה מהכבשים שחושבות שכל ימי ההולדת שלהם הגיעו בבת אחת אבל יהיה להם הלם כשהם יגלו למה! אני חושב שאבא יבוא לראות את דוד סיימון, אבא שלך, לבקש ממנו רשמית לבוא לחתונה אבל רציתי לשאול אותך בעצמי.
אבא קנה לנו מיטה ושולחן מהנגר צ'אפי, יוסף, בדרך צפונה בנצרת, הלכנו לראות אותו לא מעט פעמים במהלך השנים ואפילו אכלנו ארוחת ערב עם משפחתו פעם אחת. יש להם שני ילדים שם, הקטן מאוד כואב וקוראים לו ג'יימס אבל לשני קוראים ישו והוא ממש נחמד ומאוד מאוד חכם. הוא באמת סידר את המיטה שלנו ואמר לי שיהיו לנו ארבעה ילדים בה, שלושה בנים ובת! נראה! אמא של ישו ממש נחמדה ואמרה משהו בסגנון 'אם הוא אמר את זה, זה יקרה'. קצת מוזר זה! אבא מעריך שיש איזושהי שערורייה בעברה שאף אחד לא מדבר עליה אבל לא היה אומר מה הייתה. אני תוהה אם זה קשור לאבא שלו? ישוע הזכיר את 'אביו' בזמן שיוסף ישב לידו ליד השולחן אז אני תוהה אם יוסף הוא לא באמת אבא שלו. בכל מקרה, לא הייתי צריך לסחוב את המיטה כי השאלנו את אחת מהחדשות שלקחנו אותה בעגלות חמורים מבעל עגלה היא בתאני - לקחנו אותה בתורות בנסיעה על העגלה בדרך לצפון אבל היא פרצה מהחמור כשכולנו ישבנו עליו בבת אחת והוא סירב לזוז - ככה זה עם חמורים!
אבא אומר שהוא ארגן לקנות יין מבחור בהר הזיתים אז אני מניח שנשכור שוב את עגלת החמורים - אני מצפה לטיול הזה, תמיד עלינו לבקעת הירדן כש אנחנו הולכים צפונה אז הכניסה להרים תהיה חדשה עבורנו!
אני אצטרך לקצר את המכתב הזה מכיוון שחנה ואמא שלה בדיוק הגיעו לכפר ומתארחות בפונדק של אחי השכן של משה - נחשו לאן אני הולך?
