Brain Stem Stroke Recovery

Chances of brain stem stroke recovery are considered to be poor. We have come a long way. We may be able to improve the outcomes.
More importantly, we believe that, just as in the early 1990's when successfully treating a stroke victim in a time when it was thought a waste of time, we believe better outcomes may be possible.
Before telling you my story of treating a woman who recovered from a massive stroke that left her in a vegetative state, consider what science has proved. Consider the possibilities.
There are several reasons for thinking the outcomes can be improved.

Improving Outcomes for Brain Stem Stroke Recovery

1) Brain nerve pathways can regenerate

2) Brain cells can repair and possibly grow anew (called neurogenesis)

3) We can promote the above processes with hydration, electrolytes and diet

4) We can provide mental stimulation to promote the above processes

5) Providing precursors that help in the production of Glutathione helps with all of the above
Historically, the thinking of 'no hope' was still alive in the mid 1970's.
By the mid 1990's recovery of consciousness after a non-traumatic brain injury (stroke) was still considered unlikely. Of the 169 patients in a persistent vegetative state in one survey from 1994, 11% regained consciousness in three months, 2 more within 6 months and one final recovery within the year. That was a total of 15% or 25 who recovered to various degrees according to the New England Journal of Medicine titled Medical Aspects of the Persistent Vegetative State
In nursing school, in the early 1990's, we were still taught that once someone enters a vegetative state, there is little hope. The sensational recoveries, we were told, were urban legends, mere myths. Yet at the same time, the topic was hotly debated as an ethical consideration.
By the mid 1990's the research started showing positive results of those who came out of a vegetative state. This was shining lights on the possibility of hope for brain stem stroke recovery. I know this because of personally treating one such patient. She was admitted to my floor with a massive stoke and was in a vegetative state.

What Is a Prolonged Vegetative State?

A vegetative state is a condition lasting a minimum of three months. It is different than a coma which lacks both awareness and being awake. People in a vegetative state may have been in a coma and have awoken.

The difference, they have not regained awareness. Their eyelids may open occasionally and they may have a sleep-wake cycle. However, they lack cognitive function of consciousness. The chances of regaining consciousness diminish with every passing day in the vegetative state.

History Prolonged Vegetative State

The persistent vegetative state (PVS) syndrome was first described in 1940 by Ernst Kretschmer who at the time called it apallic syndrome. Then in 1972 it was called persistent vegetative state by the Scottish spinal surgeon Bryan Jennett and American neurologist Fred Plum.
Initially it was based on modern medicines increased capacities to keep patients' bodies alive.
This state became a legal grey area which led advocates on both sides of the issue. On one side, that these patients should be allowed to die. On the other side, if recovery is at all possible, care should continue. Because some diagnosed as PVS and have improved makes the case for those saying recovery is not possible.
Rather than arguing autonomy, their quality of life, use of resources, the wishes of person and those of the family, we are asking another question.
What if we could save more people.
What if we could save just one more person, your loved one.

Watching Someone Come Out of A PVS: My Experience

In the early 1990's, as a new LPN in a hospital, my first assignment was two people. There is not a lot to do with just two people so there was plenty of time.
One patient, Edith (not her real name) was admitted over the weekend with a massive stroke. This is her story.

My First Patient of My First Day of My First Week

When you are a new nurse, you only get two patients assigned to you. One of my two patients was an elderly woman who had a massive stroke. While she was able to breath on her own, she had no awareness. There was no response to words or even pain. Most of us will move when we feel pain. She had no reaction.
My thinking, having just seen Robin Williams in Awakening, was different than everyone on the floor was saying. One by one, my RN colleagues and trainers were saying that I was wasting my time. I reminded them that I had nothing but time since my assignment was only 2 patients.
While in nursing school we were taught that people in persistent vegetative states virtually never recovered. But we were also taught that we cannot know what goes on inside the mind of a patient when they are in a vegetative state.
With this info, I proceeded to try to connect with Edith, because of wanting an answer to that question, "What if...?"
The wasted time everyone spoke about, it was spent talking to Edith. It was providing range of motion, moving all of her limbs while explaining what I was doing.
Every day on entering the room, greeting her, I said "Hi, my name is Jonathan, I'm your nurse." I went on further to say things like."If you can hear me, move your hand or finger" or I might have asked her to blink. Speaking to her as if she could hear and process every word, my goal was to let her know that we were going to help her get out.
What if she was trapped trying to get out? What if she could hear everything but could not respond. What if she was in there but trapped? How long would she be able to last before she gave up? How long would any of us be able to last before we gave up.
Whether my actions personally helped her or not, we may never know.
What we do know, on Wednesday of that week, she moved her right great toe. It moved in directions that I didn't know you could move it. Mind you, the entire rest of her body was still, un-moving and with no signs of awareness.
On Day 4, Thursday, on entering the room and announcing my arrival, her foot, out from under the cover, started dancing. Here entire body, except for her foot, was still unmoving, unresponsive. If you did not see the foot dancing, you would have thought she was totally unresponsive.
The doctors canceled her transfer to a nursing home. Further observation was ordered.
On Day 5, Friday, calling out on entering the door, both feet were dancing on hearing my voice.
This connection we made, the neuro connections that were made, were most likely due to the intense communication over the past few days. This is just one piece to the puzzle on of helping people who have suffered strokes.
The question, what effect does our communication and working with them foster the reconnection and regrowth or the rewiring of the brain? Could more be saved if we provided intensive communication? Edith, incidentally, had a 93% recovery of her functions.
Currently up to 15 percent of stroke patients recover in the first year. While that may not seem clinically significant, if it was one of your family members, percentages do not matter.
The key to success is providing the help as soon as possible.
Then if we improve the outcomes of strokes in general, then what kind of outcomes would we see with brain stem strokes.
This is a peer reviewed article on the rehabilitation of patients recovering from brainstem strokes: case studies and clinical considerations.
The Abstract
It was estimated that 15% of all stroke rehabilitation patients had a brainstem stroke. Unlike hemispheric stroke, the characteristic consequences of brainstem stroke include ataxia, dysarthria, and diplopia, severe dysphagia and may require enteral feedings.
There is little research published on rehabilitating those with brainstem strokes even though there are a significant number who experience these.
There is a considerable amount of comprehensive research on hemispheric stroke in literature.

Promoting Neurogenesis

In nursing school we were likewise told that we were given a certain number of brain cells and that was all we got in our lifetime. Now the idea that humans do not grow new brain cells has been proven to be wrong. We can grow new brain cells in a process called neurogenesis. This ability lasts our entire lifetime. Perhaps you may be wondering what you can do to increase your own neurogenesis? While that is a topic for another webpage, this is one of the ways we may be able to help those who have had a stroke. It may offer hope and help regarding brain stem stroke recovery.
We now know that boosting glutathione (GSH) can promote neuro-repair and neurogenesis. What would happen if we increased the glutathione in someone suffering from a stroke? Further, could this help improve brain stem stroke recovery outcomes?
Could it help? While there is little science to prove this could help, the next question, would it hurt? The answer is no.
To help promote neurogenesis, the fluid and electrolyte balance needs to be maintained. Interestingly, hydrating the body with unprocessed salt also has been found to increase GSH.

Diagnose and Adios: Beyond Brain Stem Stroke Recovery

The term 'diagnose and adios' is used in medical schools regarding neurodegenerative diseases.
It points to a bias and the lack of effective treatment options (outside of surgery) for patients who are sent to neurologists. We cannot change this. However, those who have family members who have suffered strokes can make a change.
Go, talk to your family member who has had a stroke. Talk daily. Work their limbs in accord with the nurses or therapists at the hospital. Try to get them on alternative treatments that boost the glutathione levels.
In other word, do not give up. Do not let Diagnose and Adios be the end of the matter. It may be possible to help them, just as I saw a dramatic change in Edith.
Initially the first few days are the most critical, then the first three months, then the six month mark and finally the year.
Even if there is no change in the body, we do not know what is going on inside the mind. Treat them the way you would want to be treated if you were in their bed.

How Long Change

It took Dr. Lind 35 years to get lemons used in the treatment of scurvy. Today, it is not nearly as long to get new treatments incorporated into practice.
JAMA found it only takes 17 years for about 14% of newly discovered science to make it into day to day clinical practice.
As the old adage goes, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Only those making waves in regards to brain stem stroke recovery, those who are making the squeak will hope to see a change in brain stem stroke recovery.

 Total Dream Recall

A Simple Trick to Hack Tonight's Dreams Tomorrow

Would you like to have total dream recall. It is possible.
While sleep is essential for health, both mentally and physically, there are additional ways we can get even more enjoyment out of it.
“Man

Water and salt play an important role in helping us both have better sleep, better dream experiences and (drum roll please) to be able to have total recall of your dreams.

To Dream and Dream Recall

In interviewing patients on this topic, people fall into a few categories.
Some complain that they never dream.
They do dream but they do not have any recall. Everyone dreams. It is how our brains process and (in computer terms, defrag) the information that we took in during the day.
Some remember or recall some dreams some of the time.
Some do not want to have dream recall.
They do not what to know what they dreamed.
Some have bad dreams.

We hypothesize that bad dreams could be due to, among other things, toxic chemical buildup in our bodies. Among the healthiest people and people who did not have any guilt, we found no evidence of bad dreams. If you are doing things that cause a guilty conscious, well, we did not research your group. We worked on the premise that most people are good, they just have bad software operating in their brains.
Some people have awesome dreams. Perhaps most of us actually have awesome dreams but do not remember them.

Then there is unique group of people who guide their dreams and are able to have them as their own nighttime cinema experience. You can learn more about this on sites that talk about lucid dreaming. They also have very good dream recall.

How to Have Total Dream Recall

You can recall tonight's dreams tomorrow. It's a simple trick with water.
"I did this and it was amazing. I remembered everything. It all came back, flooding my mind with vivid images of what I had dreamed last night."--Nathan H
First: Thirty to 45 minutes before you go to sleep, drink 10% your body weight in ounces of water. Unless you otherwise should not, take about 1/8th teaspoon of unprocessed salt per 16 ounces of water (table salt will work but not as good) and dissolve it on the tip end of your tongue. Do not rinse.
The unprocessed salt tastes much better and because it has minerals, it buffers the salt so it will not burn like table salt will.
NOTE: If you feel a really bad burning sensation, go ahead and either spit and rinse it out or rinse it down. Some people who do not have enough salt will get this response.
ALSO: If you get light headed on taking the salt (because you are deficient), rinse and spit the salt out. You can also put a tsp of sugar on the center of your tongue to help. Then only start out with the smallest amount of salt.
When ready to go to bed:
1) Get a thermal cup or insulated cup. Fill it with ice. Put about a sip of water in it.
2) Set it by your bed. Make sure and put a coaster under it so that the condensation does not ruin your furniture.
3) Once in bed, take a sip of the ice cold water. Then go to sleep.
4) On awaking tomorrow, before you get up, take a sip of the ice water that has melted in the cup overnight.
You will have total dream recall.
Your entire night of dreams will flash before you. It is that simple.

Drinking Before Sleep: Won't I Have to Get Up?

There are many healthy reasons for drinking water before sleep.
The biggest concern is having to get up in the middle of the night. This is why we need unprocessed salt with its many minerals. These help the water get to the cellular level, allowing the body to heal. The cells can store the water if they have the electrolytes to get the water into them.

"After drinking 32 ounces (of water) before bed and taking 1/4 tsp of salt, I just knew I would have to get up in the middle of the night. I was going to call you at 3 AM and tell you how this just did not work. But something incredible happened. For the first time in 10 years, I did not have to get up to go to the bathroom. I slept all night.
I'm sold on the Water Cures. I will be doing it for the rest of my life."---Name withheld by request
Note: This was a 354 lb man. We have a few almost identical testimonials like this. Do not drink more than 32 ounces in any 2 hour time period.

Will You?

Will you hack your brain and get total dream recall tonight?
Give it a try. Do it tonight. This is a variation of the Water Cures Protocol
While some are concerned with the extra salt, unless there is a medical reason you should not eat salt at all, this has Less salt than a saline IV.
So try it tonight. Let us know. Post on Face Book or post right here and let us know how it works for you. Give us a share. Give us a G+ or Tweet. Lets let everyone know about this and lets make the world a bit better.

Water Cures Science

Here is Some of the Science

Doctors are often reluctant to consider the water cures science. They are unlikely to accept anything that is not science based. They want evidence based medicine and using simple logic is often thrown out. They say that they have debunked water cures. They evidently have not read the report we share below.

The Water Cures Naysayers

The Snoops, quack watchers and the naysayers of the water cures are at the least, misinformed. They are often times prejudice against anything that they claim not science based, even if it is. They are not experts in hydration. They have not even studied hydration to be able to provide informed explanations on it. They will often cite the lack of scientific evidence (even if it is there) to say that it does not work.
Also it should be noted that the founder of Quack Watch has admitted in court documents that he is, in effect, a paid shill of large corporate pharmaceuticals.
He does not attack large pharmaceutical companies for the illegal and death dealing drugs that we hear eventually being black labeled or even banned.
Please note: Not all on QuackWatch or Snoops reports are wrong. Many of the reports on treatments they expose as ineffective or dangerous are accurate. They do sometimes provide the science or the logic to prove that the treatments are unsafe.

Questioning the Water Cures Science

When it comes to the water cure, there are several problem with their thinking.
  • Does the lack of scientific evidence mean it does not work?
  • Is there any science that shows it does not work?
  • What qualifies as scientific evidence?
  • How can you have a double blind placebo test with water? (not possible)
  • If the Water Cure Science s nonsense, one site suggested, most important thing a scientist can say is “I could be wrong.” What if the naysayers asked themselves if they are wrong?
There is science that shows it works. Below you will find one from PubMed, the National Institute of Health.
The lack of science is often because of blindness to anything alternative. Most all drug studies are funded by the very pharmaceutical companies that benefit from the results of the studies. This is like someone funding a study to prove that the sun does not shine. The funding will only pay for research to be conducted at night.
Logic and common sense are not considered even if it could provide relief to those who use it. Where does critical thinking stop and ignorance start. When something like the water cures is offered for free, when there is no profit motivation in it, then why not consider it.

Water Cures Works

People who have tried the water cures protocol have found that it works. This is because the drought in the body is the cause of the symptoms.
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15617881 (CLICK HERE)
The study proposed that hydration and volume expansion may lower sympatho-vagal ratio, thereby helping many clinical conditions. These condition include but were not limited to acute coronary syndromes, asthma, cancer, and stroke.
Hypertonic hydration rather than a low-salt diet, may be a potential strategy to treat some cases of hypertension associated with dehydration and autonomic dysfunction.
Interestingly, it suggested that oral hydration is best.
Perhaps hypertension and end-organ damage represent independent consequences of dysfunctional sympathetic and neuro-hormonal activation. Using an IV enables getting the volume increased faster but at a negative cost to overall health. The problem is sympathetic hyperactivity.
With oral hydration, vagal tone triggered by gastric distention, a benefit not possible with intravenous fluids.
The benefits of hydration and volume expansion offer novel methods to treat a wide range of clinical conditions through pharmacological or electrical modulation of cardiovascular or gastrointestinal baroreceptors.
Nursing Diagnoses: Fluid and Electrolyte Imbalance.
Another area that there is considerable science is in the field of nursing. The differential diagnoses, Fluid and Electrolyte Imbalance, less than bodies need is an example of the scientific recognition of a drought in the human body.

Clinical benefits of hydration and volume expansion in a wide range of illnesses may be attributable to reduction of sympatho-vagal ratio.

Abstract

Hydration and volume expansion regimens are widely thought to offer symptomatic benefit in many human ailments. Many varied theories for the phenomenon exists such as decreased blood viscocity in cardiac disease, dilution of toxins in cancer, and cleansing effect on airways in asthma. While it is plausible that disparate mechanisms are involved in different conditions, we propose an alternative, unifying hypothesis that many of the clinical benefits of hydration and volume expansion are partly related to reduced sympatho-vagal ratio. Hypovolemia triggers baroreceptor-mediated sympathetic response and neurohormonal activation to promote fluid retention. Emerging evidence suggests that many diseases including cardiovascular, neurologic, gastrointestinal, metabolic, inflammatory, thrombotic, viral, and oncologic conditions are manifestations of abnormal sympathetic bias and associated T helper 2 bias. Hypovolemia-induced sympathetic activation, especially if baroreceptor dysfunction is involved, can worsen these conditions. Hydration and volume expansion may lower sympatho-vagal ratio, thereby tempering a wide variety of clinical conditions linked directly or indirectly to adrenergia including, but not limited to, acute coronary syndromes, asthma, cancer, and stroke. Interestingly, isotonic or hypertonic hydration, rather than a low-salt diet, may be a counterintuitive potential strategy to treat some cases of hypertension associated with dehydration and autonomic dysfunction. In contrast to the putative causal relationship between them, perhaps hypertension and end-organ damage represent independent consequences of dysfunctional sympathetic and neurohormonal activation. Venipuncture enables faster volume expansion but may also be a source of sympathetic hyperactivity. Oral hydration may additionally promote vagal tone by triggering gastric distension, a benefit not offered by intravenous fluids. The empiric benefits of hydration and volume expansion portend novel methods to treat a wide range of clinical conditions through pharmacologic or electrical modulation of cardiovascular or gastrointestinal baroreceptors.

The Dehydration Allergy Connection

Few doctors speak of the dehydration allergy relationship. The solution is so simple, rehydration.
To improve the rehydration process, providing electrolytes helps the body to increase the rate at which it re-hydrates.
Allergies are an inflammatory response of the mast cells and basophils (white blood cells). Both mast cells and basophils contain histamine. Histamine is one of the things involved in an allergic attack.
Dehydration suppresses immune system making you more susceptible to allergens. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21362276)
When dehydration, your histamine levels are elevated.
This results in suppressed white blood cell production, the very things that help you eliminate allergy responses.

The Water Cures Solution

When we drink water, we dilute the histamine and reduce the symptoms of the allergy.
When we add unprocessed sea salt, we get the added antihistamine effects of the salt multiplying the benefits of the water.

Dehydration Allergy: Real Stories from Healthcare

Is a holistic nurse, practicing as a pool nurse in several hospitals, one of the most common symptoms seen in hospital patients was allergies. The easy solution that almost everyone got was an antihistamine.
As a holistic nurse, I was always on the outlook for natural ways to do what medicines and supplements did. Allergies were a no-brainer, simply give the natural antihistamine, water and the allergies would disappear.
Great idea but it was slow to produce beneficial effects for most and for some, it did now work. This is for multiple reasons.
Just like the pharmaceutical antihistamine, it would take about an hour for the water to get past the stomach and into circulation where it could do any good. If food was consumed or was the cause of the allergic reaction, it would take even longer. So, the first issue, how to speed up the process.
Based on the available research, there are a few mechanisms that allow water to work to alleviate the allergy symptoms. The science pointed to diluting the histamine as being one reason. But there was an even more important reason that the research pointed to but is rarely recognized. Dehydration in the body is managed by histamine.
This means that by providing water to the body to distribute to the cells, the body slows down or even stops the histamine production in relation to the allergic response. But, the problem was the wait time.
When someone is dehydrated, they cannot simply rehydrate by drinking more water inside of a few minutes. It is like your grass when there is no rain or water for some time. If you run the hose full open on hard dry ground, it will not adequately water the roots, where the water is needed. We need a gently sprinkle over an hour, repeated over a few days to get the water penetrate deep into the soil.
Likewise, it takes time to restore and rehydrate our bodies. That is, unless you speed up the process and use a few tricks of the trade to ensure you are properly hydrated. When it comes to dehydration allergy, this will also shorten the time it takes for relief.

Five Ways to Speed Up Hydration: The Solution for Dehydration Allergy

1. Drink Only Water: Rather than any other fluid, drink only water. Purified or filtered water will be best. If you drink tap water, you will be trading one problem for another when considering the chemicals tap water is treated with.
2. A Pinch of Sea Salt Dissolved in Your Mouth: Use a ratio of salt to water of about 1/8th tsp of unprocessed sea salt, dissolved in your mouth for every 16 ounces of water. Take the salt before you drink the water. This provides both the electrolytes and numerous trace minerals that we need for optimal health.
3. Drink Enough Water Each Time:On a daily basis, drink half your body weigh in ounces each day. Divide that amount by 5 or 6 to get your individual dose of water. Never drink more than 32 ounces in 2 hours. Never increase your water intake with out the salt.
Or, another way to measure it would be to drink 10% your body weight in ounces each time you drink. Start out drinking twice a day and work up to 5 times a day.
Since most drink the entire amount at once, many have found it best for the water to not be too cold.
4. Drink Only Before and After Meals: This is simple. When we drink only water, it can pass through the stomach and get into the gut rapidly. Once there, it can be absorbed and come back into the lining of the stomach where it prepares the walls of the stomach for the soon to be eaten food. Once prepared, you will not only get the best pleasure out of the food, you will get the optimal nutrition. More importantly, the water can dilute the stomach acids and decrease the ability of the body to best obtain all the nutrient in the food.
Ideally, you will drink on awaking. Then drink 30-45 minutes before every meal and 2 hours after. Finally, drink before bed time.
4. Drink Your Entire Daily Dose: This is perhaps the most difficult. Most people start with the AM and PM dose of water. If you are dealing with allergies, it may be best to drink the entire dose for a few days. Once you have a routine, it will be easy.
And don't worry about extra trips to the bathroom. Most find that they make less trips once they start using the salt before drinking the water.
5. Make it a Friends and Family Affair: It is easier to maintain a health regimen if we do it as a community. Getting family and friends involved and participating in the process will help us to do it and stick with it until it becomes a healthy habit.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

It is well known that dehydration can impair bodily functions. To evaluate the impact of hydration status under ambient environmental temperature on the immune system, 25 male collegiate wrestlers were recruited to undergo an experimental dehydration program.

METHODS:

Thirteen subjects had controlled diets with individual energy requirements to prevent body mass loss and restricted water intake to cause 4.52% dehydration; they formed the dehydrated group (DE). These subjects developed a urine specific gravity of about 1.030 in 84 hours. Twelve other subjects had no water restriction and maintained their total body weight comprised the euhydrated group (EU). Peripheral blood monocytes (PBMNC) were isolated after dehydration to perform immune response testing by being incubated with a polysaccharide fraction from fu-ling, Poria cocos (polysaccharide fraction from Poria cocos, PCPS, 1 - 30 £g/L), to prepare a conditioned medium termed conditioned medium of PBMNC stimulated by PCPS (PCPS-MNC-CM). More PCPS (25 µg/L) was needed in the DE group to prepare the PCPS-MNC-CM, which was assayed with a growth inhibitory curve for treated U973 cells.

RESULTS:

The treated U937 cells, incubated together with PCPS-MNC-CM from the DE group, exhibited a much lower nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) positive value of (63.7 ± 4.7)%. The concentration of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin (IL)-1β and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in PCPS-MNC-CM from subjects after dehydration was much lower than in the CM from the EU group.

CONCLUSION:

The immune response to PCPS in the DE group was lower than in normally hydrated subjects.

What is an Antihistamine?
Are There Natural Antihistamine Options?

Antihistamine Definition: A drug, compound or solution that blocks, stops or inhibits the action of histamine in humans. Antihistamines may also be used for sedation, sleep and prevention of nausea and vomiting.
Antihistamines are used mostly for allergic reactions such as sneezing and itching.

Beyond Antihistamine Definition: Antihistamine Actions

Histamine is released when the body is exposed to an allergen.Histamine travels to the histamine receptor sites on each of our cells. Antihistamines block histamine from entering these receptor sites.
Histamine also plays a role in regulating the water in our body.
The over the counter antihistamines work in no more than 40% of people who use them. One study found that even if they do work, they may only reduce the symptoms by half. In other words, they do not fully help people find relief.

Antihistamine Action

Antihistamines do not affect the release of histamine and they do not inactivate histamine. A better way of describing the work antihistamines do could be saying it inhibits the effects of histamine.
When histamine is released, the receptor cells cause redness and itching that is associated with allergic reactions.
Antihistamines also reduce the release of tears and salivation. The first generation antihistamines produced sedation and helped with motion sickness, reduced nausea and vomiting.
One of the most famous, Diphenhydramine or Benadryl is used for reducing allergic reactions, nighttime sedation and control of drug-induced Parkinson's symptoms and control of coughs (in the liquid form).
Imagine you have a chemical spill on your land. There are two ways of dealing with it. Creating a dam and containing it till it can later be hauled away or diluting it till it was harmless.
The chemical spill in our body is the allergen. Histamine is the alarm or signal that we need more water. Once the water is delivered, the allergen is washed out and made harmless to both our cells and anywhere it may go.
Is Being Anti Histamine Bad?
We live in a world that being politically correct has gone to an extreme. Is it right to be anti anything? In the case of anti-histamine, consider the facts.
Histamine also works as a neurotransmitter. This is why it helps with motion sickness. It also plays a role in our sleep. Histamine has been linked to Multiple Sclerosis. Perhaps this is why the Water Cures has helped many to succeed in ending their suffering with MS.
The down side, trying to block it with antihistamines can affect our memory, causing us to forget. It can inhibit our ability to learn and ultimately affect our ability to have normal sleep.
Histamine, when it is in our GI tract, helps with the production of acid that is used for digestion. Some drugs disrupt the creation of acid in order to stop acid reflux. There is a better way to control acid reflux. It is called the Water Cures protocol.
Histamine that causes inflammation, is a red flag that we need more water.
Histamine regulates water in the body in the production of acid as well as in the production of other neurotransmitters that affect our thinking and sleep. Why would we want to chemically disrupt it? Our bodies have a natural mechanism that uses water and salt as an antihistamine. It works, it is that simple, water and salt.

Natural Antihistamine vs Anti-Histamine

The Consequences of Taking Anti-Histamines

There is a natural antihistamine in your cupboard that is better than any other and it is the best anti-histamine known to man.

What is Histamine

Histamine is defined as a chemical compound that our cells release in response to injury, immune responses when there is an allergic reaction, inflammation and chemical exposure. Histamine also helps regulate the gut. Non-mast cell histamine also acts as a neurotransmitter in our nervous system. Basophil and mast cell histamine, once released, cause the contraction of smooth muscles as well as dilation of capillaries. In this function, it is mostly an immunologic reaction.
Water plays an important role in the histamine response of the body. By understanding how it works, you can better manage your own histamine reactions, should you ever have one.
“Lao

Histamine has a protective action in the body. One of the main actions is to correct shortages of potassium, salt and water. Histamine and its 5 helpers, work to maintain homeostasis in our bodies. Homeostasis is another word for balance.

Histamine is produced in specialized cells in the body known as mast cells. Also, one type of whit blood cell called basophils produce histamine.

How Do Antihistamines Work

Antihistamines block the action of histamine.
Your mast cells leak the histamine into the cells and subsequently into our surrounding tissues and into the blood. This is the precursor of inflammation. Antihistamines are given with the thinking that inflammation is bad, eliminating inflammation is good.
Antihistamines help stop the action of histamine at receptors in our skin, nose, blood vessels and airways. But this is an oversimplification.

Three Functions of Histamine:

Histamine working as a neurotransmitter, among other things, is responsible for our sleep. It is believed to be part of the mechanism that causes us to forget memories and learning. Is it any wonder that a side effect of antihistamine use is memory disturbance?
Histamine in our gut helps with the production and stopping the production of acid for digestion. Why would we want to tell our gut to stop doing what it is supposed to do?
Finally, histamine has a protective response, the inflammation. This is in reality, a cry for water. It should also be noted that histamine is implicated in Multiple Sclerosis.

Commonalities Of Histamines in the Body

The one main commonality of the various histamines is prompting us to hydrate and inner body water redistribution. We do not store water in our bodies the way that animals such as camels do. Our water stores are more diverse and limited. The water it does have can be shifted from one place to another. Histamine plays a role in this shifting when necessary.

Should We Use Chemical (Drug) Antihistamines?

The late Dr. Batmanghelidj worked on the theory that the current thinking of antihistamine was wrong. Histamine, he pointed out based on research, can be overproduced due to the exposure of too much of something we are consuming or may be exposed to. When exposed, histamine signals for water intake or for transferring water from a place of abundance to a place of lack.
The natural histamine response is one of our bodies cries for water, salt or both. Why not fix it with a natural antihistamine.
When we use chemical or drug antihistamines, all that is happening is a covering over of the bodies water shortage and the need for salt and water.

The Best Natural Antihistamine: Salt

What do wild animals turn when they have congestion or runny noses? The fact they don't often have health problems like humans should clue us in. Animals get their salt (natural antihistamine) from certain foods other sources. Have you ever noticed deer grazing on grass by the side of the highway. No doubt it is for the extra salt they get from the roads in the winter.
The first thing you will get on admission to the hospital is usually a saline IV. Our cells, everyone of them, needs both water and salt to maintain health. Only drinking water can actually cause harm to our heart. When we only drink water, the sympathetic nervous system is constantly stimulated, which prematurely ages our heart.
Why are we told to cut down on salt? Why not drink more water? The key, drinking plain water. While too much salt is bad, not having enough plain water is worse. Water helps wash out the excess salt.
A related problem is the substitution of sweetened drinks and juices for thirst and not water. What do all animals, wild and domestic drink? Water. Yet they rarely get the diseases humans do.

Self Test the Natural Antihistamine Theory

When you get a runny nose, have congestion or need to constantly clear your throat, put a little salt on the end of your tongue. It is not necessary to swallow it. Just let it be absorbed and after a little while, rinse or otherwise, get rid of the excess.
Notice what happens within seconds. Likewise if you are having a hay-fever attack, try the salt and a glass of water. Make sure and look at the second hand of a clock. Because you will want to take note in how many seconds it takes to work.
Everyone is different and we will all have various salt and water needs. Test the theory and if necessary, increase or decrease the amount of unprocessed salt and water you take in.
Now that JAMA and the CDC both have said that we need more salt to avoid heart attack and cardiovascular disease, why have doctors not got on the band wagon?
Low Salt Intake Increases Your Risk of Getting a Heart Attack

Super Charged Histamine: Adrenaline

The antihistamine that comes from our adrenal glands is the strongest kind. Remember, histamine regulates water. Why would we need to shut off or change the transference of water inside our body when it is designed to do just this? Think animals in the wild.
Adrenaline is our fight or flight hormone. It has a specific use. When we drink coffee and especially caffeine, the adrenal glands are signaled to release adrenaline. So our emergency reserve is released just because we told it too by drinking a glass of coffee.
But what happens when we repeatedly call for adrenaline? The body will go into a very mild form of cachexia. Our bodies cannibalize themselves but at the level of the organs. Depending on how strong our liver is will determine the damage and which organ or system will suffer the most.
Since salt is the ultimate natural antihistamine, it stands to reason that we need to learn exactly how much we need based on our own biology. The water cures protocol is only a starting point. Likewise, it is only the foundation for our health. As such, we need to tailor it to our personal needs.

 Best Natural Antihistamine For Dogs.
The best natural antihistamine for dogs can be found in the Water Cures protocol. It consists of water and sodium chloride. More specifically, unprocessed sea salt that has the extra minerals not found in table salt.

Antihistamine for Dogs: What is Antihistamine.

Histamine is a substance released in the cells of humans and animals. It is released when there is injury, allergic reaction, inflammation or exposure to chemicals. Histamine helps with the electrical transmission between nerves. It plays a role in the immune response.

The most important thing to know, histamine helps protect us. In the case of our fury pets, it helps balance salt, potassium and water. When exposed to something unhealthy for them (or us), the body overproduces histamine. When this happens, you will notice your pet has problems. It could be skin problems or it could be pain.
Antihistamines stop the action of histamine in the receptors, where the cells receive the histamine. They do not fix the cause of the release of histamine. They only block the cells from receiving the histamine. They do not heal. What if there was a better way. What if there was a natural way?

Treating the Cause Not the Symptom

Instead of treating the symptom (giving antihistamine) what would happen if we treated the cause of discomfort in our four legged friend? We would eliminate the discomfort. We would help with the healing process.
By providing salt and water for our pets, we are giving them the nutrients to allow them to balance their bodies and heal.

The Natural Antihistamine For Dogs: Salt and Water

Antihistamines chemically try to block the action of histamine. Histamine is released because something is happening within the body that needs to be fixed. Antihistamines mask the effects of something gone wrong inside the body of our pets.
One of the primary functions of histamine is management of water.
Since histamine manages water, why would we want to interfere with it? Would it now be better to help it.
Water and salt provide the best natural antihistamine known to man or dog. The water is transported into the innermost parts of the body by the salt. We need salt to live. So do our dogs and cats.

Isn't Salt Dangerous for Dogs?

Numerous health and vet sites say salt is dangerous for dogs. Yet the same doctors know that life is dependent on salt. How do we balance the two views.
The Merk Manual Says: "Salt poisoning has been reported in virtually all species of animals... ...salt poisoning has historically been more common in swine (the most sensitive species)...cattle and poultry, there are increasing reports of adverse effects in dogs from acute excess salt consumption."
Note: Many are aware that cows and horses have salt licks. They need salt to live, more than they get from foods. Yet too much is dangerous. The same is true of dogs. Perhaps you have noticed some dogs lick certain peoples skin. Why? Often because of the salt.
The health issue to be concerned about is not salt. The issue is too much salt.

How Much is Too Much Salt for Dogs?

To provide a general idea, according to the Merck Manual 3/4 teaspoon of salt at one time would be too much for a 100 lb dog.
A Schnauzer weighs 30 - 45 pounds (14 - 20 kg). A German Shepherds weigh 49–88 lb (22–40 kg). Respective amounts of salt would be 1/4 tsp for a small dog and 1/2 tsp for a medium sized dog.
Note that the 'too much' is an 'at one time' amount.
1/4 teaspoon of salt = 500 milligrams of sodium 1/2 teaspoon of salt = 1,000 milligrams of sodium 3/4 teaspoon of salt = 1,500 milligrams of sodium
With salt, dogs can tolerate small amounts in water. Remember, salt on food is not the same as salt in water.
Sea water can have in excess of 2 tablespoons of salt in a quart. This is way too much and why dogs will get sick drinking sea water. We recommend having at least 2 bowls, one without salt and one with up to 3/4 teaspoon of salt for large dogs, less for smaller dogs.
The dogs will drink what they need. Watch which bowl your dogs drink from. Adjust the salt as you see what they drink. Initially they may drink the larger amount. Then when they drink less, adjust the level of added salt down to what they prefer.
My Experience: A good friend tried the WaterCures Pet Protocol on Timmy. He was a small terrier mix. At 15 years old, he was showing his age. He could no longer jump on the couch or chair. Paco, his 2 year old Chihuahua friend and companion was always wanting to play. On starting the water and salt as a natural antihistamine for dogs, Timmy perked up dramatically. Once again able to jump on the couch and chairs, he would also be found playing with Paco. The amazing thing, this was a 15 year old dog.
