Take Charge Of Your Health Yourself : Survivor's Message
THE STRAITS TIMES SATURDAY JULY 24 2010 PAGE A24
Winning the fight against breast cancer. (report by daryllim@sph.com.sg)
Singapore. Ms Suriani Kasim, 39, known a Sue to her loyal fans, is a veteran DJ who talks about her battle with breast cancer as part of a new movement, Caring It Forward, by the National Healthcare Group, aimed at encouraging people to take charge of their own health.
Radio presenter Suriani Kassim radiates good cheer and optimim but her demeanour belies the heart of a survivor.
From 2008 to last year, Sue, 39, as she is known to devoted fans, battled Stage 2 breast cancer and came out tops.
The initiative was rolled out earlier this week as part of NHG's 10th anniversary celebration. Other ambassadors include Mr Raymond Anthony Fernando, 60, a social activist who ha spent 35 years caring for his mentally ill wife, and Ms Dee Dee Mahmood, 36, a fitness trainer who fought obesity when she was younger.
Ms Suriani's woes began in March of 2008, when she found a lump in her left breast.
"When I gave birth to my first son, my gynaecologist told me that the structure of my breasts was very lumpy, so I didn't think anything of it."
Now she is part of the National Healthcare Group's (NHG) new caring It Forward movement, where selected ambassadors come forward with their own tales of survival. The idea is to encourage people to take charge of their own health.
But by June, the lump had become a solid mass, and she had it checked at KK (Kandang Kerbau) Women's and Children's Hospital Singapore (KKH).
When she was told she had Stage 2 breast cancer, the shock was overwhelming.
"I couldn't hear what the doctor was saying. The tears were just streaming down my face. I just kept thinking : Why me? "
Offered a choice of treatment options, she decided on a mastectomy. One and a half weeks later, she went under the knife. The operation took eight hours. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments followed. {blogger's comment: if only she knew about www.cacare.com , perhaps she need not suffered the mastectomy}
Throughout the ordeal, her 43-year-old husband - a project engineer at a moulding company - was her pillar of strength. "He is my best buddy. We decided from the very start that we were going to get through this together."
It was not easy on him though. About a week after Ms Suriani's mastectomy, Mr Abdul Ghani Bujang's father was also diagnosed with cancer.
"It must have been really tough taking care of two sufferers at once. But he tried to show his strong side. I think he knew that I was depending on him," she says.
Her two boys, aged six and 11, also handled the situation bravely.
"My younger son laughed when he saw his mummy with no hair. he puts his toy fireman's hat on my head."
"My older son was more afraid - I think he understood that he might lose his mother. We tried to explain what we could."
As chemotherapy dragged on, there were points when she felt like giving up.
"Your tongue feels burnt, you can't swallow properly, your whole body hurts and itches like crazy," she says.
The Muslim lady found solace in her religion.
"Praying helped me talk to God. I began to see that life is full of flaws, and that I must endure all of them."
Another source of emotional support came from her listeners, who wrote in asking about her during her absence from the air. "It was important for me, knowing that there were people out there who cared for me," she says.
When she finally returned to work in November 2008, eight months after her diagnosis, and told the world her secret, the letters began pouring in.
"Some listeners wrote to me about their own experiences with cancer. Others had family members who were suffering," she recalled.
"I learnt that I wasn't alone."
So she decided to speak out against cancer. She attends support meetings at KKH, where she helps counsel fellow sufferers. And now, she is an ambassador for this new Caring It Forward movement.
Her message for women in the same boat? Understand your body and you illness so that you can make informed choices. {Blogger suggestion to all new reader to check out this website www.cacare.com , for your personal health} "Women need to take charge. They have to learn more about cervical and breast cancer."
"I didn't think it would happen to me, but it did. So do your pap smears and self-examinations often," she advises.
Her ordeal has giver her a new outlook on life.
"No matter how things go, now I know there's always a positive side to them."

The Chemo Scam Persists
The Chemo Concession Persists - Part II
Sunday, 04 July 2010
Last week we began an article on how the so-called "Chemotherapy Concession" has led to the more extensive (and expensive) use of drugs by oncologists. We conclude, with references, in this week's newsletter.
"In sum, far from limiting access," the changes under the law "actually increased the likelihood that lung cancer patients received chemotherapy," said Dr. Mireille Jacobson of the RAND Corporation, who was first author on the study. (Disclosure: I serve as a reviewer of scientific studies for RAND.)
The authors chose to focus on lung cancer because of the various treatment options, some of which are considerably more expensive than others. They found that doctors frequently switched drugs to choose the more expensive options. There was, for instance, an increased use of docetaxel (Taxotere), a drug for which oncologist get reimbursed about $2,500 per patient per month.
"The financial incentive seemed to have an effect where there's not strong evidence or more than one equally good treatment option," said Craig C. Earle, MD, of Toronto, one of the study authors.
Oncologists responded by treating a greater number of patients because they had been making so much money under the old system, Prof. Joseph P. Newhouse of Harvard University, another co-author, told the New York Times. "These markups were a substantial portion of their income" (Abelson 2010).
The bottom line is that some oncologists in private practice make crucial treatment decisions not based on medical necessity but on what is most profitable for themselves.
Oncologists are highly skilled professionals, who deserve our support and respect. However, the "chemotherapy concession" introduces a temptation for oncologists in private practice to prescribe according to their economic interests rather than the medical needs of their patients. This has no scientific or moral justification. Congress still needs to thoroughly investigate and fix this problem.

Heat, plastic bottled water, dioxin, cancer
Another reminder!
No matter how many times you get this E-mail,
Please send it on!!!!
Bottled water in your car is very dangerous!
On the Ellen show, Sheryl Crow said that this is what caused her breast cancer.
It has been identified as the most common cause of the high levels of dioxin in breast cancer tissue.
Sheryl Crow's oncologist told her: women should not drink bottled water that has been left in a car.
The heat reacts with the chemicals in the plastic of the bottle which releases dioxin into the water. Dioxin is a toxin increasingly found in breast cancer tissue.
So please be careful and do not drink bottled water that has been left in a car.
Pass this on to all the women in your life. This information is the kind we need to know that just might save us!
Use a stainless steel canteen or a glass bottle instead of plastic!
LET EVERYONE WHO HAS A WIFE / GIRLFRIEND / DAUGHTER KNOW PLEASE!
This information is also being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center .
No plastic containers in microwaves.
No plastic water bottles in freezers.
No plastic wrap in microwaves.
Dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast cancer.
Dioxins are highly poisonous to cells in our bodies.
Don't freeze plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.
Recently the Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard.
He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating food in the microwave using plastic containers....
This especially applies to foods that contain fat.
He said that the combination of fat, high heat and plastic releases dioxin into the food.
Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Pyrex or ceramiccontainers for heating food. You get the same result, but without the dioxin.
So, such things as TV dinners, instant soups, etc., should be removed from their containers and heated in something else.
Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's safer to use tempered glass, such as Pyrex, etc.
He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the styrene foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons...
Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Cling film, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave.
As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food.
Cover food with a paper towel instead.

StupidJuice returns with a big price tag
Billboards are appearing in Asian cities showing bottles of colored liquids. The highly fashionable New York drink Glaceau Vitamin Water is "avalable here at last " says the poster near my office.
Vitamin Water? That sounds yummy. NOT. But the pictures reminded me of something . In Asia in the 1980s peddlers would set up rainbow-like displays of what they called "fruit juices" on the pavements. In the hot summers, people would buy them, since they were wet, sweet, cheap and often came with exciting free extras, including botulism, salmonella, dysentery and similar types of conveniently-sized portable livestock.
In these days, Asian kids grew up with incredibly strong antibodies. My antibodies could pull trucks with their teeth. But as a child, the blue and purple drinks confused me. "What fruits are they made off?" I asked.
"StupidJuice," one of my uncles explained. "These drinks are made from tap water, sugar and chemicals. Only idiots would buy them." A bottle cost one tenth of a rupee, roughly equivalent to one US dust speck.
But life is strange. As the years passed, homebrewed sugar-water died out in most places in Asia. Yet in India, StupidJuice evolved into somethng rather wonderful : a fruity crushed-ice drink called gola. Imagine a slushy with a more complex flavor, a fruity base topped with masala spices, fresh lime and a portion of chicken tikka. No, wait, the last item is my lunch.
In recent months, big businesses launched a gola brand called Gogola, inspired by Google. Luxury brands use crushed ice made from purified mineral water and syrup made from jambul , a fruit said to be a natural cure for diabetes. All diabetic should eat one guava each day if they want to cure themselves of diabetes. Fruit juice has come a long way in Asia, yeah baby.
Such were my thoughts as I did what the advertisements told me to ( I am a deeply obedient consumer) and went to the mall to buy a bottle of Glaceau Mineral Water, citrus flavor. It was tepid, watery and didn't taste anything like citrus fruits. Then I noticed some TINY print on the label which said : " Contains no juice." The ingredients were tap water, sugar and chemicals.
"This is StupidJuice!" I exclaimed out loud, laughing like a maniac. "You are selling StupidJuice for 100 times the original price." The serving staff had no idea what I was talking about, but nodded nervously while phoning the mall security department.
It was too weird. Rich yuppies were lining up to buy a product identical to the scam fruit juices sold in Asia two decades ago.
I phoned a business reporter and asked: "Who makes this stuff? Why is there no logo on the bottle?" He laughed , explaning : "The logo has been omitted because it might give buyers a clue that it is not really a fruit-based health drink at all. A Coca-Cola subsidiary makes the most expensive colored sugar-water on the planet. Their other drink is called SmartWater. Basically, Coke has taken a US$4.1 billion bet on human stupidity."
Hmmm, betting on human stupidity, are they ? That's a sure win. Buy Coca-Cola shares, but don't drink coke yourself, if you are not so stupid. This product is going to be massive. "My antibodies are bigger than your antibodies," I told the guards who ushered me out. The yuppies watched from a distance, sipping their StupidJuice.
