What Does "the Joy of the Lord Is My Strength" Mean in the Bible?

Shèngjīng zhōng de “zhǔ de xǐlè shì wǒ de lìliàng” shì shénme yìsi?

What Does "the Joy of the Lord Is My Strength" Mean in the Bible?

Though chosen, rescued, and promised, God’s people suffered through severe consequence for their continual rejection of Him and His covenant. Ezra read from God’s Word and recited His Law to the people (recorded in Nehemiah 8), and they were shattered by the vast disobedience and rebellion.

“Their exile was severe, both in its brutality and how it burned into the minds and identity of the people. Who were they without the land, without the temple? How do they relate to God now? Was their special relationship also lost,” ?

Shàngdì de zi mín suīrán bèi jiǎnxuǎn, huòjiù hé yìng xǔ, què yīn bùduàn jùjué tā hé tā de yuē ér zāoshòu yánzhòng hòuguǒ.

Yǐ sī lā xuāndú shàngdì de huàyǔ bìng xiàng rénmen bèisòng tā de lǜ fǎ (jìlù zài ní xī mǐ jì 8 zhāng), tāmen bèi jùdà de bèinì hé fǎnpàn jī kuǎle.

“Tāmen de liúfàng shì yánzhòng de, wúlùn shì cánkù de, háishì tā rúhé shāo rù rénmín de sīxiǎng hé shēnfèn.

Méiyǒu tǔdì, méiyǒu shèng diàn, tāmen shì shéi? Tāmen xiànzài yǔ shàngdì yǒu shé me guānxì? Nándào tāmen de tèshū guānxì yě shīqùle,”?

Even still, God was willing to rebuild and restore His people. Jíbiàn rúcǐ, shàngdì réng yuànyì chóngjiàn hé fùxīng tā de zi mín.

“The day God reaffirmed to them that they were still his chosen people, and he was still their God. “Nèitiān shàngdì xiàng tāmen chóngshēn, tāmen réngrán shì tā de xuǎnmín, tā réngrán shì tāmen de shàngdì.

That is a joy that could impart strength.” Nà shì yī zhǒng kěyǐ fùyǔ lìliàng de kuàilè.

His love leveled them then as it humbles us now, to consider the New Testament sacrifice of God’s only Son for our own personal restoration through salvation. Tā de ài shǐ tāmen biàn dé píngtǎn, yīnwèi tā xiànzài shǐ wǒmen qiānbēi, yǐ kǎolǜ xīn yuē zhōng shàngdì de dúshēngzǐ wèi wǒmen zìjǐ tōngguò jiù ēn ér huīfù de gèrén xīshēng.

What Is the Joy of the Lord?

Shénme shì zhǔ de xǐlè?

“Nehemiah said, ‘Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. Zhè yītiān duì wǒmen de zhǔ lái shuō shì shénshèng de.

The joy of the Lord is found on the road to restoration. Zài fùxīng de dàolù shàng kěyǐ zhǎodào zhǔ de xǐlè.

God convicts us of sin, and often our first reaction is guilt and shame. Shàngdì ràng wǒmen rènzuì, wǒmen de dì yī fǎnyìng chángcháng shì nèijiù hé xiūchǐ.

But those feelings never come from God. Dàn zhèxiē gǎnjué cónglái bu shì láizì shàngdì.

God's Word was opening their eyes to the way they had failed Him, but Nehemiah was quick to remind them of who the Lord is. Shàngdì de huàyǔ ràng tāmen kàn dàole tāmen gūfù tā de fāngshì, dàn ní xī mǐ hěn kuài jiù tíxǐng tāmen zhǔ shì shéi.

What Does the Bible Say about Joy? Guānyú xǐlè, shèngjīng zěnme shuō?

The original Hebrew for "joy" in Nehemiah 8:10 is "chedvah," meaning joy or gladness. Ní xī mǐ jì 8:10 Zhōng “xǐlè” de yuánshǐ xī bó lái yǔ shì “chedvah”, yìsi shì xǐlè huò gāoxìng.

The root word for joy in this context means to rejoice or to make glad. Zài zhè zhǒng qíngkuàng xià, huānlè de cígēn yìwèizhe gāoxìng huò gāoxìng.

"Strength" in the same verse is a Hebrew word meaning “a place or means of safety, protection refuge, or stronghold.” Tóngyī jié jīng wénzhōng de “lìliàng” shì yīgè xī bó lái yǔcí, yìsi shì “ānquán dì dìfāng huò shǒuduàn, bǎohù bìnàn suǒ huò bǎolěi”.

The root word of strength means “to be strong, prevail; to make firm, strengthen.” Lìliàng de cígēn yìsi shì “jiānqiáng, shènglì; shǐ jiāndìng, jiāqiáng.”

The joy of the Lord is a constant gladness and cause to rejoice. Zhǔ de xǐlè shì chíxù de xǐlè he xǐlè.

It stems from an inner strengthening from our relationship with Him. Tā yuán yú wǒmen yǔ tā guānxì de nèizài qiánghuà.

When Jesus died for us, He restored us to a peace with God that cannot be undone. Dāng yēsū wèi wǒmen ér sǐ shí, tā shǐ wǒmen huīfùle yǔ shàngdì de hé hǎo, zhè shì wúfǎ wǎnhuí de.

“Your joy rests on God’s joy,”. “Nǐ de xǐlè qǔjué yú shàngdì de xǐlè,”.

“But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves” (John 17:13). “Dàn xiànzài wǒ lái dào nǐmen zhèlǐ, zài shìshàng jiǎng zhèxiē huà, hǎo jiào tāmen zìjǐ chéngjiù wǒ de xǐlè”(yuēhàn fúyīn 17:13).

The above verse is part of Jesus’ prayer to the Father and possibly Jesus’ longest prayer. Shàngshù jīng wén shì yēsū xiàng tiān fù qídǎo de yībùfèn, yě kěnéng shì yēsū zuì zhǎng de qídǎo.

Jesus experienced the fulfilling joy that stemmed from His Father’s strength, and wanted us to be filled and overflowing with it (John 15:11). Yēsū jīnglìle yuán zì tiān fù lìliàng de mǎnzú de xǐlè, bìng xīwàng wǒmen bèi tā chōngmǎn hé chōngmǎn (yuēhàn fúyīn 15:11).

The living Word of God wastes no words. Shén huó de huàyǔ bù huì làngfèi rènhé huàyǔ.

Jesus wasted no words on earth. Yēsū zài shìshàng méiyǒu fèihuà.

For this to be His longest recorded prayer carries significant weight attached to the message He was delivering. Yīnwèi zhè shì tā jìlù shíjiān zuì zhǎng de qídǎo, duì tāsuǒ chuándá de xìnxī jùyǒu zhòngyào yìyì.

‘Fulfill’ in John 17:13 implies more than just filling to brim, as explained here. Zhèngrú zhèlǐ suǒ jiěshì de, yuēhàn fúyīn 17:13 Zhōng de “mǎnzú” bùjǐn jǐn yìwèizhe chōngmǎn.

Jesus’ strength perfects our joy. Yēsū de lìliàng wánshànle wǒmen de xǐlè.

The paraphrase of John 17:13 reads, “Now I am returning to You. I am speaking this prayer here in the created cosmos alongside friends and foes so that in hearing it they might be consumed with joy.” Yuēhàn fúyīn 17:13 De jiěshì shì:“Xiànzài wǒ yào huí dào nǐ shēnbiān. Wǒ zài chuàngzào de yǔzhòu zhōng yǔ péngyǒu hé dírén yīqǐ shuō zhège qídǎo, yǐbiàn tāmen tīng dào tā shí kěnéng huì bèi xǐyuè suǒ tūnshì.”

Biblical joy is the result of a Christ-prioritized life. Shèngjīng zhōng de xǐlè shì jīdū yōuxiān shēnghuó de jiéguǒ.

we have a great High Priest who constantly intercedes on our behalf. The Son of God also is The Son of Man loves you more deeply than you can fathom. He prays for you, that you might walk in the abundant life his death affords you.” “Wǒmen yǒuyī wèi wěidà de dà jìsī, tā bùduàn dì wéi wǒmen dài dǎo. Shàngdì de érzi yěshì rén zǐ ài nǐ de shēn, chāoguò nǐ suǒ néng lǐjiě de. Tā wèi nǐ qídǎo, ràng nǐ kěyǐ xíngzǒu zài tā de sǐ dài gěi nǐ de fēngshèng shēngmìng zhòng.”

What is the Biblical Context of Nehemiah 8:10?

“Then he said to them, ‘Go, eat of the fat, drink of the sweet, and send portions to him who has nothing prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord.

Do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10).

The first “Lord” means “my lord of men or of God; a title spoken in place of Yahweh in Jewish display of reverence.”

LORD, in all caps later in the verse, refers to the root of our joy, which strengthens us.

It is the Hebrew word "Yehovah" (YHWH).

Jehovah, the existing One.

The proper name of the one true God.

The root of  ‘Yehovah’  is  Hayah. Hayah

Scattered throughout its definition are these phrases: “to be, become, come to pass, exist, happen, fall out; to happen; come to pass; arise; be established; be finished.”

We don’t just do things for the Lord, we live our lives in Him, with Him, and by His strength . . . to honor Him with the submission of our will for His.

He is our strength.

Nehemiah’s name means, “Yahweh has compassion.”

Starting off as a cupbearer to the king, Nehemiah’s close proximity to the king eventually led to his leading the restoration of Jerusalem.

Biblically, Nehemiah was illustrating the inward faith that we now know as a relationship with Christ, versus an outward expression in reverence to the Lord.

He knew a true expression of worship came from a deeper motivation than outward appearance.

In the same way, God forgives us on the same deep and intimate level.

It doesn’t end at our heartfelt sacrifice and repentance.

He ushers in true change and a heart shifted to the seat of joy.

Joy from His strength erases guilt and shame …and the death we deserve for our sin.
