He looks for distraction, for overconfidence, for a heart that has started to relax spiritually.
The Bible tells you plainly in First Peter 5:8, "Be sober minded, be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. "
He is an opportunist.
He looks for open doors, for moments when you are not paying attention, when you are more focused on your own success than on God's presence.
That is why your highest moments can often be your most vulnerable ones.
Another danger of success is the subtle entrance of pride.
When emotions are high and people are applauding, it becomes easy to think I am gifted.
I am special.
This happened because l am so capable.
I, I and I.
Your words may still give glory to God, but your heart can quietly begin to glorify self.
You start giving yourself the credit for what was always a work of grace.
The Bible warns strongly about this in Proverbs 16:8. Better a little with righteousness than much gain with injustice.
Proverbs 16:18, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall," which is a biblical proverb warning that arrogance and pride can lead to one's downfall. It emphasizes the importance of humility and the dangers of overestimating oneself.
In this context, pride is not just feeling happy about what God has done.
It is an attitude of independence, an inner posture that says, "I do not really need God as much now."
The proud person starts to follow their own wisdom instead of God's word.
They stop listening.
They stop submitting.
They stop depending.
That is a dangerous place because pride opens the door to many other sins.
Scripture also tells you in James 4:6, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."
To be opposed by people is hard.
To be opposed by God himself because of a proud heart is terrifying.
But the verse does not stop there.
It gives hope.
God gives grace to the humble.
The place of safety is not in appearing strong but in admitting weakness and depending fully on Christ.
So what should you do when God lifts you up?
When life is going well, when you are on top, stay watchful, stay prayerful, stay small in your own eyes.
Celebrate, but do not forget the One who brought you there.
Keep saying in your heart, "Lord, apart from you, I can do nothing. Every good thing in my life is from you."
The Apostle Paul understood this deeply.
In 2 Corinthians 12:9, the Bible says, "But he said to me, my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."
God is not asking you to pretend you have no gifts or to deny what he has done through you.
He is inviting you to remember that the power behind everything is his grace, not your strength.
You are weak in yourself but strong in Christ.
So let this be your heart posture.
Never trust in your own standing.
Always trust in Jesus.
Do not measure your security by how high you have climbed but by how close you are to him.
Stay in the place of dependence, the place of prayer, the place of humility.
Always keep your eyes on Jesus Christ.
Do not think of yourself as standing strong on your own.
See yourself as someone who is weak in human strength, but held, strengthened, and kept by the power of Christ.
That is where true safety is found.
Now, let us take a moment to pray together.
🤲 🙏
Dear Lord Jesus, I confess that l am not strong on my own.
Help me to never see myself as a strong believer in my own ability, but to know deep in my heart that all my strength is in you.
Your word warns me in 1 Corinthians 10:12.
So if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall.
Lord, help me to take this warning seriously.
Guard me from spiritual pride.
No matter how many Bible verses I may know, no matter how many church services I may attend, remind me that I can do nothing of eternal value without you.
I cannot defeat sin.
I cannot resist the devil by myself.
I need you, King Jesus.
Only in you and in you alone am l able to walk in victory, and your power.
Your word in John 15:5 says, "I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit. For apart from me, you can do nothing. "
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."
Lord, let this truth live in my heart.
Keep me from the deception of self-reliance.
Do not let me become impressed with my own walk, my own discipline, or my own spiritual habits.
Instead, let me always be impressed with your grace, your mercy, and your power at work within me.
Your word in Ephesians 4: 27 teaches me.
And do not give the devil an opportunity to lead you into sin by holding a grudge or nurturing anger or harboring resentment or cultivating bitterness.
King Jesus, help me to live with wisdom so that I never open the door to the enemy.
Help me to search my heart and see where I might be holding on to unforgiveness, anger, or hidden resentment.
l ask you to remove bitterness from me.
Help me to release every offense, to forgive those who have hurt me, and to walk in love.
Protect me from any foothold the devil might try to gain through my emotions, my reactions, or my relationships.
Teach me to quickly confess, quickly forgive, and quickly return to your peace.
Father, help me to live in the truth of Philippians 3:8. For your word says, "Yes, everything else is worthless when compared to the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.
For his sake, I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage so that I could gain Christ.
Lord Jesus, let this be true in my life.
I confess that my real riches are in you, not in anything l own or anything I have accomplished.
I do not want to hold tightly to my achievements, my reputation, or my success.
I choose to hold tightly to you.
I refuse to place my hope and affection on money, on status, or on human approval.
I do not depend on my skills or my intelligence.
I look to you, mighty Lord.
Right now, I decide again that I will keep my eyes on Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of my faith.
Help me to look to you in every season.
I fix my gaze on you so that I do not become distracted by pride, fear, or the things of this world.
I pray that I would be filled with the Holy Spirit in such a way that my eyes are opened.
Holy Spirit, open my eyes to see everything that is pulling me backward.
Show me every habit, every thought pattern, every relationship, and every hidden sin that is harming my walk with you.
Do not let me be blind to what is slowly draining my spiritual strength.
Shine your light into the deepest parts of my heart.
