"Understanding how your mind can heal your brain."

Hope for brain injury.

What is "brain?"
-Chemicals and electrical signals in that lump of
meat that sits in our skulls.
-A part of the nervous system that is distributed
throughout the body.

What is "Mind?"
An embodied relational process that regulates the flow of information and energy. -Dan Seigel

Mindfulness is the mind's ability to be gently aware of this process.

Two key ways the mind can help the brain rewire:
Neuroplasticity

Neurogenesis

What is neuroplasticity?
"Neuro" Greek for nervous system "Plasticity" means plastic or malleable (like clay, it can be shaped).
Thus neuroplasticity is having a malleable nervous system (brain) - for better or worse (eg. kindling vs the dalai lama).

What is neurogenesis?
"Neuro" = Brain/Nervous system
"Genesis" = to be born
Neurogenesis is the birth of new brain cells.

Yes it's possible!

What is Reptilian Brain?

What is the job of the reptilian brain?
"The reptilian brain was the first part of the
modern brain to develop in evolution. It
operates behind the scenes, regulating our
survival needs: food, oxygen, heart rate,
blood pressure and reproduction, among
many others.
The brainstem is like a bodyguard who's always
watching your back, constantly scanning the
environment for potential threats. The reptilian
brain also decides whether you will move into
fight or flight."

What is the limbic brain?
The emotional brain or the "seat of the
unconscious" holds the amygdala and the
hippocampus.
The amygdala (size and shape of an almond)
can often be overactive in MTBI and PTSD. It
plays a role in emotional learning as well as
procedural memory.

The Hippocampus
The hippocampus regulates cortisol, a hormone
that is elevated by stress and fear/anxiety.
Too much stress leads to imbalances in cortisol
that can be related to the shrinking or lessoning
of the hippocampus (atrophy).

The Unhappy Hippocampus and the
Overactive Amygdala
The hippocampus is responsible for memory to
have a sense of past, present and future.
It is the seat of declarative/explicit memory
(factual information).
It is important in filtering what information is
important and what is irrelevant.

The Hippocampus and Neurogenesis
We once thought that the brain cells one is
born with were all that you had to work with and
that they died off as one aged.

By tagging thymadine with a dye we have
discovered that the hippocampus is where new
brain cells are first born.

Even in 90 years olds and even with brain
injury.

The Power of the Mind
By using our mind (spirit/will) to
effort calming ourselves the new
cells born in the hippocamus can
help the brain forge new pathways
(neuroplasticity).

How to help new cells not do the
same old thing.

One way in which the mind can help heal the
brain can be found in developing a strong skill
set of mindful based tools.

Mindfulness is one powerful way to help the
brain (part of the nervous system) to regulate
cortisol levels and achieve homeostasis.

The Mindful Brain: A Key
Having mastery over ways to be calm is one
way to help new brain cells being born in the
hippocampus not be drenched in cortisol so
that they do the same ole thing.

Mindfulness is a key to reverse atrophy in the
hippocampus so it can be robust and an ally.

Mindfulness assists the emotional
brain in regulating.

A happy hippocampus:
-helps with working memory,
-differentiation between the past and present
-filtering important vs ineffective information
-keeps the amygdala from going bonkers
-constructs a resilient narrative

How to develop a mind that can help
heal the brain:

1. Research shows changes in the brain after
ten hours of focusing on the breath in short
sittings (fifteen minutes).

2. Being successful does not require being
focused. Rewiring happens each time we bring
the wandering mind back to the breath.

PT for the brain!

When your mind wanders come back
to the breath.

Inhale 1 2 3 4 5
Exhale 1 2 3 4 5

Being with the Breath
Inhale (count), hold, exhale (count).

Don't feel defeated every time you
catch your mind wandering.

That's the important part. When you catch
yourself and come BACK to the breath you
strengthen the brain muscle.

Brain muscle?

Mindfulness exercises help strengthen muscles
for positive neuroplasticity like the insula which
is part of the prefrontal cortex.

The dalai lama has Arnold Shwartzeneger
muscles in the insula.

The neocortex embraces the
emotional and reptilian brain.

When the limbic brain is flooded then the
neocortex cannot be accessed.

When this happens guess what we lose?

Executive function.

Executive Function tasks include:

Planning
Working Memory
Attention
Problem Solving
Verbal Reasoning
Inhibition
Mental Flexibility
Task Switching

Executive function is sometimes
called a non-cognitive skill.

This is because emotional regulation (noncognitive
skill) is the balance between a happy
hippocampus and a hearty prefrontal cortex.

Multiple variables that can make
executive function difficult to use.

1. Developmental obstacles (eg SES factors)
2. Attachment (e.g. caregivers with depression,
substance abuse, a hx of trauma)
3. PTSD/dissociation
4. MTBI/TBI

These are all ways the brain can be injured

Indeed MTBI and PTSD symptoms
are often the same.

Common examples of PTSD include:
AVOIDANCE
-Avoiding things that bring up memory such as
movies or tv that have images that remind you
of something
-Avoiding peole with red beards or hamburger
joints if something distressing happened.

The dark side of neuroplasticity

The limbic system can kindle. Or one fear
based or avoidant thought re-enforces another.

This can lead to isolation because men with red
beards and hamburger joints can lead to
avoiding all men with facial hair and all public
eatery.

Thus fear and anger can wire our brains in a
way that is a disservice to our well being.

Thankfully our mind does not only exist in the
brain but just as much in the heart.

And there is a lot of of science to this statement
specific to the vagal nerve and to
neuropeptides such as oxytocin and
vassopresin but let me cut to the chase.

The Heart is an Intelligence
Processing Center

It's electromagnetic field is measured at five
times greater then that of the brain!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=1XqPhoRKPWw

One amazing tool of mindfulness practice is
cultivating heart intelligence.

For example, the heart may have a habit of
racing when introduced to a stressor. (Low
heart rate variance [HRV]).

By working with the breath and slowing down a
frantic brain the heart's intelligence can be
accessed (High HRV).

Mindfulness repatterns the heart.

Research finds the more steady and even your
attention can make the heart the more willpower
rather then impulsivity can guide your
life.

Will power is intrinisic to agency (person-hood),
volition (choice). These "non-cognitive skills"
are at the "heart" of executive function.

The Reflective Self

Becoming heart centered means we are able to
feel with others in a way science calls "Flow"
that is at the heart of healthy relationships.

The mind is responsbile for flow. The brain and
heart are the minds "helpers."

Lovingkindness

Another major way the mind can
heal the brain with the heart's help is
through a practice called loving
kindness.

What is lovingkindness?

Lovingkindness is a practice in which we wish
others and ourselves well being. Practiced by
the dalai lama.

You don't have to be the dalai lama
to know this kind of happiness.

Research (Richard Davidson) shows that eight
minutes a day of loving kindness practice
rewires the brain.

Let's practice together now.

Sharing my experience of rewiring

I was first introduced to the ways the mind can
heal the brain through a neuro-scientist named
Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz. Dr. Schwartz discovered,
with brain imaging, the ways in which 21 days
of mindfulness based behavioral therapy and
his own process called "The Four Steps" could
rewire the brain.

The seed was planted

I was so impacted by Dr. Schwartz I gave up a
successful career in the film industry to study
psychology, particularly the field of trauma.

Thus I came into my experience with
a deep certainty that I was not stuck.

This is the first step to share with you:
To believe in your own potential to transform
and to perservere in trying and trying and
trying.

Here are are some keys tools that helped me
rewire.

Somatic Experiencing

Created by Peter Levine, this is a form of
therapy that helps the nervous system calm
and heal. It is not talk therapy. It is a subtle
and powerful tool.

The person I worked with:

There are different styles and ways to offer S.E.
My experience was lying on a massage table
and being well nurtured by someone named
Sally Thomas, an OT who was trained in a four
year program by Peter Levine. I asked Sally to
be available today so that, if you are interested
you can connect with her. Sally, will you stand
up?

Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a kind of therapy in which
electrodes are put on your head. They do not
stimulate you, they read your brainwaves.

Then you listen to tones and watch a computer
screen for feedback This feedback teaches
your brain when it's in it's optimal zone.

The qEEG controversy.

There are lots of ways to do neurofeedback but
if you have TBI you know your brain is not
typical. Thus it is important to take great care
before you start altering the electromagnetic
field of your brain.

It's important to have your brain
imaged with a qEEG.

Although many wonderful programs exist that
are automatic, when using neurofeedback with
TBI, though it is an expense, it is not safe or
wise to work with a practitioner who is not
reviewing your qEEG and tailoring treatment to
your own unique brain's needs.

Crystal Bowl Meditation

I also utilzyed a form of sound therapy in which
someone played large bowls for one hour each
week to help me repattern my nervous system.
Crystal bowls are not just sound therapy.
Being lined with crushed quartz they have a
strong electromagnetic vibration. Not for the
faint of heart but very powerful.

Crystal Bowl Resource

I asked Kelly Maccinnis to be here today so
that you can find him as a resource.

Kelly plays weekly at Om Time and Body
Dynamics. He has a table out in the resource
area.

So, as we conclude let's revisit
where we began.

We began by taking a moment to connect with
one another. We then talked about the ways
the brain can wire/connect in new and
constructive ways you can direct with your
mind.
Revisiting Mind

Mind REGULATES information and energy.
This is a Relational Embodied Process. -Dan Siegel

MINDFULNESS

By following the guidelines of mindfulness practice (slowing down, focusing on the breath), the brain can learn to make new
CONNECTIONS.

LOVING KINDNESS

By becoming heart centered we get out of our
miserable egos and learn how to be more fully
and vitally connected to the world around us.

Having a "broken brain" does not
mean having a diminished heart.

If anything, those who have been through the
hardship of TBI have a much bigger and more
generous heart.

Loving kindness helps us CONNECT to the
world around us in constructive and meaningful
ways.

As you can see, it is all about
CONNECTION.

Suffering comes from a sense of isolation.

As we conclude, look around you. Think back
to the beginning of this presentation when you
connected with a neighbor.

As you go into your day, connect with one
another with a generous spirit. See what new
connections might be possible.

Yes, you can teach your old brain new tricks! Breakthroughs in the scientific understanding of how the brain works have shown us that our brains are constantly rewiring themselves in response to events in our lives. This handbook applies this new science in practical ways, by giving us a training program to re-pattern our behavior and thereby change the ways our brain is wired. It interrupts our suffering, sharpens our mental abilities and corrects our cognitive imbalances. As we learn these mental skills, the neural patterns of our brains begin to change and we literally reprogram the neural networks through which information and energy flows. If you've heard about neuroplasticity, epigenetics, psychoneuroimmunology and other scientific advances, but didn't know how you could apply these breakthroughs to improve your life, you will find Heal Your Mind, Rewire Your Brain a treasure trove of resources. It provides a clear, step-by-step program that shows you how to correct the imbalances of the stressed-out brain, and install a peaceful state of mind.

Heal Your Mind, Rewire Your Brain: Applying the
Exciting New Science of Brain Synchrony for
Creativity, Peace and Presence
Author: Patt Lind-Kyle
Publisher: Energy Psychology Press
ISBN: 978-1-60415-056-8

The Brain : Is there a more fascinating and complex organ in the body? Often studied and just as often misunderstood, science, medicine and psychology have made great strides in the study of the brain.

Author Patt Lind-Kyle offers the reader a fascinating and indepth look at the last decade of the scientific breakthroughs in brain studies. The reader is given a better understanding of how the brain works and how it is constantly evolving. New studies have shown that by using mental training practices, we can transform our life and increase our emotional balance and wellbeing.

The first part of the book serves as a strong starting point to understanding the human brain, how it developed and how it affects all aspects of our lives. Part two teaches the reader meditations and tools to deal with challenges and changes. You will get a thorough understanding of brain wave patterns, the key neurotransmitter chemicals and the various brain centers.

The author has presented this work in an engaging and well organized style. Written with the layperson, student and professional in mind, it will be of tremendous aid to understanding how to help your mind work for you, your needs and areas you may feel weak in. Anyone with an interest in how our brain works and how thought processes can change our lives will thoroughly enjoy this book, and find a vast amount of new knowledge.

Author Lind-Kyle takes the reader on an extensive neuro-anatomy expedition; introduces Enneagram personality typing, and some eastern thought, before getting into the actual meditation exercises she recommends to alter brain wave function. Carefully omitting the word yoga, Lind-Kyle explains the physiology of meditation by exploring its chemical and physical substrates. The last third of the book explores the meditation exercises that Lind-Kyle recommends for balancing brain patterns based on her work with meditation techniques and the electroencephalograph. The author recommends the methods to reduce stress, alter obsessive thoughts and correct personality anomalies.
The scientifically minded will be annoyed at her continued use of the word evolution both as a word to describe the true Darwinian “survival of the fittest” and the chemical changes that take place in the individual human brain as a result of learning. They will also be put off by Lind-Kyle’s reference to DNA and genes as separate units of heredity. However, anyone truly interested in neuroplasticity and meditation will be fascinated by the effort to bring healing and change to the average person.

Easy to understand, explains evolution, function, and patterns of different areas of the brain, neurotransmitters' impact on behavior, electro-chemical processes, and the mind-brain relationship. "The mind is what the brain does." Still reading .

The Brain That Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science
by Norman Doidge

An astonishing new science called neuroplasticity is overthrowing the centuries-old notion that the human brain is immutable. Psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Norman Doidge, M.D., traveled the country to meet both the brilliant scientists championing neuroplasticity and the people whose lives they've transformed people whose mental limitations or brain damage were seen as unalterable. We see a woman born with half a brain that rewired itself to work as a whole, blind people who learn to see, learning disorders cured, IQs raised, aging brains rejuvenated, stroke patients learning to speak, children with cerebral palsy learning to move with more grace, depression and anxiety disorders successfully treated, and lifelong character traits changed. Using these marvelous stories to probe mysteries of the body, emotion, love, sex, culture, and education, Dr. Doidge has written an immensely moving, inspiring book that will permanently alter the way we look at our brains, human nature, and human potential.

MENTAL MANIFESTING – THE ART OF INNER FENG SHUI

An important principle of Inner Feng Shui is that inner energy that comes from your mind has the power to actualize everything you wish for into reality.

All your wishes can come true and all the outcomes you want can take place. You have the power within you to manifest anything into your life. What you need to do is to focus your mind single-pointedly on what you want.

1. BELIEVE!
This is the most important part of the technique. You must believe that you have the power to mentally manifest what you want into reality.

You must believe that you deserve what you are asking for, that you have a right to it and that you do not need to feel guilty about having it or need to suffer for wanting to get it. To believe intensely in your self and simultaneously stay calm and relaxed requires practice. It cannot happen instantly. But this is the first part of the training and you need to gain control and to subdue your random thoughts, stabilize your mind and focus. This will lead to steady and positive concentration.

2. HAVE A GOAL
You must have a goal whenever you wish to engage your mind to manifest a reality you want. This is a very important part of the technique. Many people are not sure what they really want; their goals tend to be vague and uncertain. So think through your life at this moment and ask yourself what will make you really happy. If you are doing this for the first time, keep your wishes simple, easy to manifest and definitely not absurd or outrageous. The idea is to slowly convince your mind you can do it, so keep your wishes small. The best wishes are specific, focused and something you can visualize in your mind.

3. REMAIN in the PRESENT
Always define your wants and your goals in the present tense, not in future tense. Aim to say “I am successful at my job” instead of “I will be successful at my job” – “I am rich, I have abundance” , "I am enjoying my new house, my new car, my new television set.”

Remember that Objects of Desire are easier to manifest than abstract wishes involving other people. For instance, wishing to win the love of someone, to win a court case, to pass a certain exam, to be successful in a job application are aspirations that require more practice. But…… once you get the hang of it and your wishes start to come true, this will increasingly encourage you and eventually take you on the road to great success until it becomes a habitual part of your living.

Use the words “I desire” or “I want” or “I wish to become” as often as possible. This makes the manifesting process easier; desiring, wanting, wishing are important empowering words and this is because your subconscious mind, the inner higher self of YOU, will go to great lengths to actualize what you want simply to make you happy.

4. BE CREATIVE and KEEP your WISHES SECRET!
Better to go for prosperity programming than poverty programming.

It is wise and beneficial to keep all your wishes to yourself. Never spell out your goals to others. Any negative thoughts or doubts they may have regarding what you wish for can well block your own effort at actualizing. Remember, they too have the power to manifest reality, and while your wishes may be stronger and more powerful, you do not need any obstacles to your success. Any negative thought sent your way which directly targets your own efforts to manifest is sure to hamper your efforts. Make an effort to keep your wishes secret. You may, if you wish, share your success as soon as what you wish for materializes for you.

5. NEVER wish anything that harm others
Keep all your wishes positive and make it a point never to wish harm to befall anyone. If you inadvertently harm someone intentionally, the same negative thing will eventually boomerang back on you. Use cosmic energy to offer love to another person. It is a lot more powerful.

6. TRUST in your HIGHER SELF
It is possible that sometimes your higher self resists your efforts to actualize some particular outcome. This can come as a strong inner message that you should stop all attempts to actualize some outcome or something. Trust this message. It is probable that what you are trying to manifest is not in your own best interest or could in the long term harm you or harm someone you love. It benefits to trust your inner guide.

7. ACCESS your HIGHER PURPOSE
Successful Mental Manifestation helps your life becomes happy, successful, healthy, wealthy and stable, it is then that you will benefit even more by going to the next stage, which is to access in to a more meaningful life. Seek out the Higher Purpose of your life is to connect with your higher self who always knows what is best for you.

Over time, you will begin to notice that your pattern of wants and needs and desires take on a new rhythm and that you will be working towards attaining and achieving things that will bring you to even higher happiness levels… and these may not necessarily be associated with material-type goals or objects. GO with FLOW for you are being guided by your inner self, who is always watching over you!

8. HOW to COPE with STRESS? Your journey into self-discovery must take into account the stress level under which you operate. Look within to see what causes you to feel stressed. Consider the following stress-inducing situations and see if anything is causing you anxiety.

In attempting to dissect the causes of stress in your life, you will come to recognize your level of stress tolerance.

Different people have different levels of tolerance. Invariably, the cause of all stress can be reduced to three sources:

People around you who cause you to become emotionally stressed

External events which cause you to become physically stressed

Lifestyle-related issues that cause you to be psychologically stressed

If you examine these three main causes of stress, you will see that they all have to do with the way your mind reacts. The key to dealing successfully with stress starts with pinpointing the root of stress. Everything that causes us to feel stressed comes from the mind.

Generate a sense of mental calmness. Slow down your reaction to people, events and circumstances that cause you stress. Learn to reverse the negatives in life. Try some physical relaxation methods by starting with deep breathing exercises and create powerful and positive word affirmations. Think up short, powerful statements that continually enhance your confidence, build you up and convince you of positive outcomes.

KEEP THE CHI MOVING and the GOOD FORTUNE will flow in!

Why Salt Lamps are Bad Feng Shui

So I started searching “salt lamp feng shui” and read as much as possible. Could it be that salt lamps are bad feng shui? Or that they should not be used in bedrooms? I had never considered this before.

Luckily the search didn’t take long.

Lillian Too (my favorite feng shui teacher) explains that salt lamps, while pretty, are bad bad bad.

Salt is a great cleansing agent especially if you are moving into a new home or when used in space clearing rituals. It’s particularly good when you need to remove stagnant energy from a piece of old furniture or next to your bedside as described above.

Salt lamps on the other hand are very harmful and do not have the power to cleanse. In fact, salt lamps will soak up all of your chi energy and you will feel tired and listless. They absorb all the good energy from the room including yours! Best to remove them if you are using them now. source

Kathryn Weber, another Feng Shui practitioner, has this to say:

Like the salt cures, these lamps too are quite drying. When they’re heated with a light element, it makes them even more drying. It’s the drying effect of salt lamps that creates problems such as lethargy and despondency, and a lethargic, despondent atmosphere in your home.

Unless you’re a side of ham, you don’t need to be dried out, or live in a drying atmosphere. Most houses (and often people) suffer from is not having enough water and water energy — and the salt just dries them out more. This means your wealth, like your skin, dries up too, as well as your opportunities. Have a salt lamp? Throw it away. source

Final Thoughts
Salt represents earth energy and should only be used sparingly as a cleansing cure. It’s too strong to be used as a regular staple because it absorbs all energy, good and bad.

If everything in your life is going harmoniously and you’re using a salt lamp, then no need to change anything. If life isn’t going as well as you want, try getting rid of that salt lamp and see if things turn around. It’s a very simple and free experiment to conduct.

I removed mine this evening and will report later how it goes. To be honest, I already kinda feel better.

Conscious parenting, family, and relationships.

DARE TO BE YOURSELF

And it can be extremely frightening, especially when being yourself can put you in danger.

I’ve struggled with this my entire life.

Only letting the world see but a fraction of who I was for fear of being ostracized or in some cases verbally or physically attacked.

However I kept flexing my courage muscle because the more I kept myself hidden the more I suffered.

The pain of hiding who I was, was worse than the fear of what I’d face by coming out.

So slowly I began to unveil myself.

First to those who were close to me and eventually to the world.

Not without literal blood, sweat and tears but regardless I felt I owed it to myself and to others who may be like me.

I stood up, wiped off the dirt, wiped off the blood, wiped my tears and like Socrates when asked to leave Athens or die for speaking his truth…

“You are asking birds not to sing in the morning, trees not to blossom when it’s time to blossom? You are asking me not to speak the truth? And that is my only joy: to share my truth with those who are groping in the dark. I am going to be here and I am going to continue teaching my truth”

and the judges said “Then we are helpless, because the mob , with a majority, wants you poisoned and killed”

and Socrates replied “That’s perfectly okay. You can kill me, but you cannot kill my spirit…”

and by spirit he meant his courage and his truth.

and I have learned to speak that truth even if my voice shakes because living outside that space is like being dead while you’re still alive.

Every act of courage to be yourself is creating a freer world because when you’re brave enough to speak your truth you give others permission to do the same.

WHAT IS LOVE?

“Love is not about possession. Love is about appreciation.”

As we look into each others eyes, we appreciate each other for who we are, for what we bring to each other and the world.

We work together as a team, sometimes feeling like there’s no place where one begins and the other ends.

Constantly mirroring the truth within each other.

Holding space for our most vulnerable and authentic selves and helping each other navigate that in a complex world.

Not afraid to break free from our conditioned idea of love and open to wherever it leads.

Open to loving what is, as oppose to the way we want it to be.

PERSPECTIVE

I am in a portal in the mythical land called Chana, where the gods of the world are trying to take over her mind. I’m posting this monologue for its very fitting in this age and time.

Dear Gods of Chana,

I don’t understand. Why are you doing this? Why am I such a threat? Why are all these people trapped here threats to you? All we believe in is love. We have felt the power within us move and connect us to a universal force that is peaceful, not competitive and judgmental. How can you be afraid of this? You have created a land of war; where children are dulled down to conform to buying things, to listening to what corrupt officials tell them to believe, to work for elites who only get rich off our labors, who hate each other, judge and seek to destroy.

This power offers freedom. This power offers a way for all of us to get along, where everyone can connect to their highest potentials and make this world beautiful.

You are nothing but greed and malice. You want us to become you. You want us to not think. Not feel. I know what you are doing. You want us to obey, to work for you, to adore you, to be afraid, which goes against everything inside of us. You are selfish. You want us to be walking dead, where anything that makes us special is dead within us, so we can make you rich.

I will fight this. I can feel how you are making my mind tell me things to do; to make me believe that my mind and what I see in front of me is real. But you cannot destroy what my heart has felt, that power within me is the only real thing. And I will remain connected to it no matter how hard you try to beat it out of me. It will survive even if that means you have to kill me.

I can feel it. Whatever you’ve put in here, in this portal, is making me angry, making me think things, like that you are an enemy, that the other people in here with me are my foes. But I want you to know that I remember when I was told the secret. I remember my mother’s eyes, pale like the sky on a mid winter’s day and full of warmth. My mother, with warm hands, told me to close my eyes. She placed a finger on my forehead and suddenly my mind was still and I felt that force that moves from my heart up to a God much higher than you.

You cannot take that away from me, you have no right. I just want to make this world better. This secret should be no threat to you. Everyday I see people so unhappy and so consumed by their mind.

But I’m sorry for you because even if you kill me, you can never destroy this power. It will only grow and spread and one day chill the coals of destruction.

BECAUSE OF YOU I DIDN’T GIVE UP

I WANT TO INSPIRE PEOPLE
I WANT SOMEONE TO LOOK AT ME AND SAY
"BECAUSE OF YOU , I DIDN'T GIVE UP."

I’ve often struggled on my path, sometimes more than I’ve triumphed.

Each time was painful, sometimes seeming like beyond relief.

But there always seemed to be a light, someone who was there to listen, to remind me of my greatness and to lift me higher.

I’m grateful for those people, and my only wish, is that in some way I can pay that forward.

ALWAYS SEEMS TO BE A LIGHT

True story.

At least for me it is.

I remember being somewhere around the age of 18.

I lived with a few friends in a dodgy apartment, AMK 420.

“The crack building” it was called.

We had barely any food; popcorn, a bag of potatoes and coffee (no sugar or cream) to be precise.

But it didn’t matter to me.

I was comfortable.

Because it tasted like freedom.

23 years later as I sit in my 650 square foot condo on the water, sipping fresh coconut water, just about to make a smoothie.

“It doesn’t matter where it leads” because I’m comfortable right where I’m at.

Because this feels like freedom.

The ultimate luxury.

You see, when we are present and overflowing with gratitude, by some miraculous force….

Some call it God, some call it the Universe.

Some will say it’s a cliche, but it’s always true for me…

God/The Universe presents us exactly what we need to get where we’re going.

THAT’S FREEDOM

the feeling of being free of the opinion of others is just speechless amazing

Your feet so rooted in the earth that nothing or no one can make you budge.

You know who you are, what you want and where you’re going.

That’s freedom.

Once you’ve tasted it you can’t help but desire more and when momentarily the shadow of the person who once allowed them self to be manipulated by the will of others creeps in.

As Cher did to Nicolas Cage in the movie ‘Moonstruck’ you give yourself a virtual smack in the face and say ‘snap out of it’

"The greatest fear in the world is of the opinion of others and the moment you are unafraid of the crowd you are no longer a sheep, you become a lion. A great roar arises in your heart, the roar of freedom" – Osho

I told you that I’ve been rearranging my furniture. For example, there was this couch that was in the middle of my living room that always felt off. I kept bumping into it. It looked out of place. But it stayed there for many years.

Recently, I had a flash of idea to move it to the opposite side. And it felt perfect. Even sitting on it felt more comfortable. My apartment flows better. All is well in my world.

It was after I did this that I discovered something called your Kua number. It’s from feng shui and is based on your birthdate and the chinese lunar year.

What you do is take the last two digits of your birth year, add them together.
Mine is 1981. Thus, I get 8+1 = 9.
Then, for males, you subtract this number from 10.
10-9 = 1. That’s my Kua number.

It’s different for women. You will add 5 to your number. 9+5 = 14. Keep adding til you get a single digit: 1+4=5.

And know that the lunar year doesn’t start with January 1. For example, if you were born in Jan 1981, it’s considered 1980.

Confusing, I know.

To make it easier, you can use this Kua calculator from Lillian Too (famous feng shui teacher).

And depending on your kua number, you have four lucky directions and four unlucky directions.

I realized the way my couch was positioned before, I was facing West while seated. An unlucky direction for me. And coincidentally, it’s now facing East, a lucky direction.

If it simply stopped there, I wouldn’t have minded much about this.

But there are more examples.

Usually, I journal while lying in bed in a certain favorite position. I’ve tried many others but this one direction was where it felt freeing.

It turns out, that direction is the #1 favored position for Kua 1 people. South-East. Cool!

The other day, I was hanging out at a friends house. There were three seating options, each facing a different direction. I was not thinking about lucky directions. I kept moving until something felt good. The couch didn’t feel right. The one chair didn’t feel right. And the last chair was just right. I opened up my compass, and I was facing South-East!

Interesting!

I wish I had a chart of all of my favorite positions over the years to see if they match up with my lucky directions.

Anyways, this is a cool little fun thing to try out and I wanted to share it with you. I have no idea why it works. If it works. How it works. Nothing except that it seems I naturally favor my lucky directions.

THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM

So with the concept of the Thought Field in mind, what is the root cause of emotional distress? It is what I call a perturbation in a Thought Field. As you may now, in physics and astronomy the term perturbation indicates a disturbance in or difference from the norm, and it implies a random quality. But in Thought Field Therapy, the perturbation is hardly random; it is a unique entity that contains active informations ( a quantum physics concept) of a highly specific sort -- a subtle, but clearly isolable aspect of the Thought Field -- that is responsible for triggering negative emotions. The psychological upset is due not to a trauma or the loss of a love,  for example. These experiences give rise to the perturbation, but it is the perturbation itself that is responsible for generating, guiding, and controlling all of the fundamental changes  within the human body -- influencing the chemicals, hormones, neural pathways, and cognitive and brain activity -- that result in the experience of a specific negative emotion such as fear, anger, or depression.  When you're  grieving, when you compulsively overeat, or when you're anxious, there is a perturbation in a Thought Field. The perturbation holds the information that governs these and all negative or disturbing emotions.

For years, although I knew of the existence of this entity in the Thought Field that created emotional disturbances, I did not know what to call it. I sought a  name that would fit the existing knowledge, but would not need to be changed if new information became available. Then the word perturbation came to me, and I opened a dictionary to see what it said. One of the dictionary definitions particularly  excited me. It defined perturbation as "a cause of mental disquietude." When I read that, I knew I'd found the perfect word to describe this entity in the Thought Field. I simply amended the definition slightly, to "the cause of mental disquietude."

The perturbation is analogous to the concept of the cell in biology and the atom on chemistry. It is the fundamental unit of causation of all disturbing emotions. Keep in mind that if it were the event itself that caused the emotional turmoil -- the loss of a loved one, for example -- you couldn't do much to quiet down the storm; after all, there is no way to change that past event. Fortunately, perturbation can be collapsed and eliminated, thanks to Thought Field Therapy.

THE EVOLUTION OF THOUGHT FIELD THERAPY(TFT)

As a child, I suffered from phobias, I vividly remember feeling terrified going through tunnels or looking out from high-rise buildings. Even at that young age, I knew these fears were irrational, although that insight couldn't control my phobias.

Years later, when I was a graduate student in psychology, I would sometimes drive my classmates a little crazy: while they'd seek diversions on Saturday nights, I wanted to discuss and debate what we had studied that week. Somehow, I knew there was more to resolving psychological distress than what I was learning. Throughout my  professional career, I continued to be curious, always searching for answers. I'm reminded of Albert Einstein's response when he was asked how he had made his remarkable discoveries about nature. "By thinking of practically nothing else my whole life," he answered. I was the same way with psychological issues. I was passionate about learning everything I could, exploring new ideas and theories about the origins of psychological illness and its treatment, Nothing interested me more.

Even so, I never felt tied to one particular school of thought in psychology or related fields, and still don't Over the years, particularly following that initial positive experience with my patient Mary, I focused my research in a number of directions that I thought might help explain what had happened not only with Mary, but also with literally thousands of subsequent patients. As Thought Field Therapy(TFT) took form, I drew from many disciplines. TFT, in fact, lies at the confluence of quantum physics, biology, meridian (acupuncture) therapy, the Eastern understanding of the mind-body's natural energy system, and , yes, clinical psychology. I had no formal training in acupuncture, but I explored it on my own. I've often said that if I have been formally  trained in all of these fields, I probably wouldn't have made the discoveries I did, since I went on this adventure alone, following the path wherever it led. Call it the power of ignorance.

APPLIED KINESIOLOGY

Along the way, a psychiatrist colleague, Dr. Harvey Ross, introduced me to a muscle-testing procedure that had been developed by  Dr.George Goodheart, a chiropractor. Dr.Goodheart called his field of study applied kinesiology.

In the test, Harvey had me extend my left arm horizontally to the side, and as he tried to push it downward, I was able to resist his effort, feeling quite strong despite the pressure he was applying.

But then he asked me to think of something upsetting. I chose to focus on the image of my home being destroyed by fire. As I did, Harvey pushed again on my outstretched arm using the same force as before.  This time, with the negative thought prominent in my mind, I could NOT keep my arm up. I felt powerless. At that moment, I realized that this was the best demonstration of the mind/body interaction I had ever seen and experienced!

Soon thereafter, I began to ponder the question: if there were a way to maintain my strength while concentrating on a problem, might this indicate that the problem was losing its intensity?

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture taps into the human body's energy system. This ancient Chinese healing system, at least 5000 years old, is based on the premise that by stimulating the flow of energy, chi, qi in Chinese, the body's own healing network can be activated. Although Thought Field Therapy is much more powerful than acupuncture, producing highly predictable and immediate results, it assesses the same energy system by tapping on the skin surface some of the identical points on the body into which acupuncture needles are inserted. TFT uses the fingers to tap, no needle is needed. Upon tapping certain acupoints in a particular sequence, a few times, psychological problems can be eliminated. One of the major differences between TFT and the discipline of acupuncture is that TFT approach also incorporates a technique called thought tuning as part of the therapeutic process. With its other unique features, TFT is capable of producing much more powerful healing than acupuncture.

NEUROLINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING

Research in the field of neurolinguistic programming (NLP) has shown the effects that certain eye movements can have on accessing memories and possibly promoting stress reduction and relaxation.  All human experience, according to NLP theorists, is encoded in a series of systems that correspond to the sensory network (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) through which one relates to the world. partially influenced by NLP notions regarding eye movements, as I developed TFT's algorithms, or "recipes," I included some eye movements that contribute to its overall efficacy.

OTHER PATHS OF INQUIRY

My study of several other disciplines also contributed to the evolution of Thought Field Therapy. For example, as I began to witness the amazing improvements in my patients who used TFT, their "quantum-type leaps" led me to study quantum theory for possible explanations for their dramatic transformations. The writings of quantum theorists like David Bohm helped me understand why TFT was capable of producing such meaningful changes, patient after patient. i was also intrigued by split-brain research suggesting that humming sounds might provide access to the right brain.

Taken together, research in all of these disciplines contributed to and supported what i has been discovering on my own, ultimately leading to the fine-turning of TFT.

Again, Thought Field Therapy is like no other psychological treatment in terms of the foundation on which it is built -- not to mention its record of success. Winston Churchill once said, " People stumble over the truth frequently, but most just pick themselves up and carry on as if nothing happened."
Fortunately, when the truth about the causes and treatment of psychological distress crossed my path, I took it to heart. The result: Thought Field Therapy.

Next blog post is about the specifics of TFT and the science that supports it.
