we learn how, through travel, we can deepen our understanding of history, gain context and perspective…and become wiser.

When our daughter was 18 and approaching her college years in the mid 1990s, my husband and I offered her the opportunity to participate in our local community college "Study Abroad Program" in Paris. She hemmed and hawed, preferring to spend spring break locally with friends. We backed off... then after much thought, she took us up on our offer. We were not a family of means, so we scraped together the necessary funds and off she went to Paris with 20 other students for three months. We also made sure she had a Eurorail pass. With the encouragement of her wonderful roommates in Paris, they traveled all over Europe on their 3 day weekends. This experience widened her view of the world and the wonderful people who inhabit this earth. She's 45 now and we're so very proud of the kind and inquisitive person she has become.
That was a wise thing you did for your daughter. I had some opportunities like this when I was younger, but I didn't take them. Years later I started traveling and kicked myself for not doing it earlier. My life changed for the better with that first experience abroad.
I'm trying to convince my daughter to do this, but she's not interested. Maybe she will change her mind. I know what a huge difference it has made to my family, and want that for others also.
@Jeff Miller I know people who have no interest in travelling outside of the United States or to another state or city, it is sad. I tell them that travelling can lead you to new foods, drinks, art, etc. You also can meet new people and learn new things. Learn about others interest, beliefs, how they live, etc. Not everyone shares the same interest or beliefs, not everyone lives the same way. Sadly, some people just have no interest in travelling.
@Strong Woman It's true. I figure it's like many other experiences, worth having once so that you know if you want to repeat it. Still, some people broaden their minds through education, books, and sharing new experiences and cultures closer to home. It's actually been interesting to see how people are getting their "new horizons" with travel restricted.
Well done parents!!! An education you can’t pay for, well sort of.
