Have you ever stopped to think that today is the smallest division of God-given time? Seconds, minutes, hours are artificial, man-made time divisions, but the period of time from dawn to dusk is the shortest division of time on God’s clock. Time is a strange thing in itself. It is something like fence posts or telephone poles you pass as you drive down the highway, but like a fence it encloses our lives, and between the two poles of life and death we are very much prisoners of time.
The perplexing part of it is that we all know when time began–at least for us individually, since time is reckoned from the date of your birth. But we are never quite sure when God will press the stop-watch, and time will have become history–at least, for us.
Have you ever thought much about the way that time governs your life? Possibly as no other generation, we are slaves to the clock. We are bound to schedules and deadlines, and we think that the world will stop unless we make those deadlines. Sometimes it is good for us to realize that when our schedules go awry, life will go on.
That painful realization first was driven home in my life, the day following a speaking engagement in Cardiff, Wales. My wife and I took the overnight train to London where we were to meet a tour group which was about to depart for the continent. When we arrived at the station in London, we thought there was plenty of time to transfer from one station to another. Being young and not having much money, we decided to take the underground. We bought our tickets and boarded. But a few minutes into the journey, the underground train coasted to a stop, and we were 100 meters or so underground.
How were we to know that the engineers were to go on strike–and we had to be caught in the middle of it? We sat there, and stewed and fumed. If we didn’t get there, we would miss the train and miss the tour which had been paid for. The longer we sat there, the higher was my stress level. I think I learned a lesson that day–a painful one. What we believe is so important at the time, really is not as important as we think. Life goes on when your plans go awry.
There is a reason why you must learn to live one day at a time. God has promised guidance and direction for just today. Time and time again, the Bible emphasizes the importance of today. God promised, “As your days, so shall your strength be” (Deuteronomy 33:25,NKJV).
When Christ taught His disciples to pray, He said, “After this manner, therefore, pray ye, ‘Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread!” There you have it again. Give us this day–not tomorrow–not next year–but meet our needs today.
You may be frustrated because your schedule and your goals haven’t worked out the way you planned. There’s good news! God promises help for just today. He said, “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble, and He knows them that trust in Him” (Nahum 1:7). Living in the present does not mean a total disregard of the past nor a nonchalant attitude toward the future. It means that you find God’s grace to cope with the flight that is cancelled, the stock that collapses, the loan that doesn’t get paid, and the hopes for tomorrow that don’t materialize. Yes, God help us to find His strength for today.

Boasting About Tomorrow

14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”
16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.
17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.

Nǐ yǒu méiyǒu tíng xiàlái xiǎngguò jīntiān shì shàngdì cìyǔ shíjiān de zuìxiǎo fēngē? Miǎo, fēn, xiǎoshí shì rénwéi de, rénwéi de shíjiān huàfēn, dàn cóng límíng dào huánghūn de shíjiān duàn shì shàngdì shízhōng shàng zuìduǎn de shíjiān huàfēn. Nǐ yǒu méiyǒu xiǎngguò shíjiān zhīpèi nǐ shēnghuó de fāngshì? Kěnéng yǔ qítā yīdài bùtóng, wǒmen shì shízhōng de núlì. Wǒmen bìxū zūnshǒu shíjiān biǎo hé jiézhǐ rìqí, wǒmen rènwéi chúfēi wǒmen ànshí wánchéng, fǒuzé shìjiè jiāng huì tíngzhǐ. Yǒushí, wǒmen yìshí dào dāng wǒmen de rìchéng ānpái chūcuò shí, shēnghuó huì jìxù xiàqù, zhè duì wǒmen shì yǒu hǎo chǔ de.
Zài wēi'ěrshì kǎ dífū fābiǎo yǎnjiǎng hòu de dì èr tiān, zhè zhǒng tòngkǔ de rènshí shǒuxiān zài wǒ de shēnghuó zhōng bèi dài huíle jiā. Wǒ hé wǒ de qīzi chéngzuò guòyè huǒchē qiánwǎng lúndūn, zài nàlǐ wǒmen huìjiàn yīgè jíjiāng qǐchéng qiánwǎng fēizhōu dàlù de lǚxíng tuán. Dāng wǒmen dàodá lúndūn de chēzhàn shí, wǒmen rènwéi yǒu zúgòu de shíjiān cóng yīgè chēzhàn huàn chéng dào lìng yīgè chēzhàn. Niánqīng yòu méi qián, wǒmen juédìng zuò dìtiě. Wǒmen mǎile piào jiù shàng chēle. Dànshì zài lǚchéng kāishǐ jǐ fēnzhōng hòu, dìtiě huáxíng tíngle xiàlái, wǒmen zài dìxià 100 mǐ zuǒyòu.
Wǒmen zěnme zhīdào gōngchéngshī yào bàgōng——ér wǒmen bùdé bù bèi jiā zài zhōngjiān? Wǒmen zuò zài nàlǐ, dùn hé xūn. Rúguǒ wǒmen méiyǒu dàodá nàlǐ, wǒmen jiāng cuòguò huǒchē bìng cuòguò yǐ fùfèi de lǚxíng. Wǒmen zuò zài nàlǐ de shíjiān yuè zhǎng, wǒ de yālì shuǐpíng jiù yuè gāo. Wǒ xiǎng nèitiān wǒ xué dàole yīgè jiàoxùn——yīgè tòngkǔ de jiàoxùn. Wǒmen dāngshí suǒ xiāngxìn de rúcǐ zhòngyào, shíjì shang bìng méiyǒu wǒmen xiǎngxiàng dì nàme zhòngyào. Dāng nǐ de jìhuà chūcuò shí, shēnghuó jiù huì jìxù.
Nǐ bìxū xuéhuìyītiān yītiāndì shēnghuó shì yǒu yuányīn de. Shàngdì yǐjīng yīngxǔle jīntiān de zhǐyǐn hé fāngxiàng. Shèngjīng yīcì yòu yīcì de qiángdiào jīntiān de zhòngyào xìng. Shàngdì yīngxǔ:“Nǐ de rìzi rúhé, nǐ de lìliàng yě jiàng rúhé”(shēn mìng jì 33:25,NKJV).
Dāng jīdūjiào dǎo tā de méntú dǎogào shí, tā shuō:“Suǒyǐ nǐmen yào zhèyàng dǎogào:‘Wǒmen zài tiānshàng de fù, yuàn zūn nǐ de míng wèi shèng. Nǐ de guó jiànglín, nǐ de zhǐyì xíng zài dìshàng, rú zài tiānshàng. Gěi wǒmen zhè yītiān wǒmen rì yòng de yǐnshí!” Nǐ yòu láile. Gěi wǒmen zhè yī tiān——bùshì míngtiān——bùshì míngnián——ér shì mǎnzú wǒmen jīntiān de xūqiú.
Nín kěnéng huì gǎndào jǔsàng, yīnwèi nín de rìchéng ānpái hé mùbiāo méiyǒu ànzhào nín de jìhuà jìnxíng. Yǒu hǎo xiāoxī! Shàngdì yīngxǔ jiù zài jīntiān tígōng bāngzhù. Tā shuō:“Yēhéhuá shì měi shàn de, shì huànnàn zhī rì de bǎozhàng, tā rènshí xìn kào tā de rén”(nà hóng shū 1:7). Huó zài dāngxià bìng bù yìwèizhe wánquán wúshì guòqù, yě bù yìwèizhe duì wèilái mòbùguānxīn. Zhè yìwèizhe nǐ zhǎodàole shàngdì de ēndiǎn lái yìngduì hángbān qǔxiāo, gǔpiào bēngpán, dàikuǎn wèi fù, yǐjí duì míngtiān de xīwàng méiyǒu shíxiàn. Shì de, shàngdì bāngzhù wǒmen zài jīntiān zhǎodào tā de lìliàng.

Chuīxū míngtiān
13 xiànzài tīng, nǐmen zhèxiē shuō:“Jīntiān huò míngtiān wǒmen yào qù zhège huò nàgè chéngshì, zài nàlǐ dùguò yī nián, zuò shēngyì zhuànqián.”
14 Wèishéme, nǐ shènzhì bù zhīdào míngtiān huì fāshēng shénme. Nǐ de shēnghuó shì shénme? Nǐ shì yī tuán míwù, chūxiànle yīhuǐ'er jiù xiāoshīle.
15 Xiāngfǎn, nǐ yīnggāi shuō:“Rúguǒ zhè shì zhǔ de zhǐyì, wǒmen huì huózhe zuò zhè zuò nà.” 16 Yuánlái, nǐ yǐ kuángwàng de jìmóu zìkuā. Suǒyǒu zhèyàng de chuīxū dōu shì xié'è de.

Vous êtes-vous déjà arrêté pour penser qu'aujourd'hui est la plus petite division du temps donné par Dieu ? Les secondes, les minutes, les heures sont des divisions temporelles artificielles, créées par l'homme, mais la période de temps de l'aube au crépuscule est la division de temps la plus courte sur l'horloge de Dieu. Le temps est une chose étrange en soi. C'est quelque chose comme des poteaux de clôture ou des poteaux téléphoniques que vous passez en conduisant sur l'autoroute, mais comme une clôture, cela enferme nos vies, et entre les deux pôles de la vie et de la mort, nous sommes vraiment prisonniers du temps.
Ce qui est déroutant, c'est que nous savons tous quand le temps a commencé, du moins pour nous individuellement, puisque le temps est compté à partir de la date de votre naissance. Mais nous ne savons jamais vraiment quand Dieu appuiera sur le chronomètre, et le temps deviendra de l'histoire, du moins pour nous.
Avez-vous déjà beaucoup réfléchi à la façon dont le temps régit votre vie ? Peut-être comme aucune autre génération, nous sommes esclaves de l'horloge. Nous sommes liés par des calendriers et des délais, et nous pensons que le monde s'arrêtera si nous ne respectons pas ces délais. Parfois, il est bon pour nous de réaliser que lorsque nos horaires tournent mal, la vie continue.
Cette douloureuse prise de conscience s'est d'abord imposée dans ma vie, le lendemain d'un discours prononcé à Cardiff, au Pays de Galles. Ma femme et moi avons pris le train de nuit pour Londres où nous devions rencontrer un groupe de touristes qui était sur le point de partir pour le continent. Quand nous sommes arrivés à la gare de Londres, nous avons pensé qu'il y avait beaucoup de temps pour passer d'une gare à l'autre. Étant jeunes et n'ayant pas beaucoup d'argent, nous avons décidé de prendre le métro. Nous avons acheté nos billets et embarqué. Mais quelques minutes après le début du voyage, le métro s'est arrêté et nous étions à environ 100 mètres sous terre.
Comment pouvions-nous savoir que les ingénieurs allaient se mettre en grève et que nous devions être pris au milieu de celle-ci ? Nous nous sommes assis là, et avons mijoté et fumé. Si nous n'y arrivions pas, nous manquions le train et manquions la tournée qui avait été payée. Plus nous restions assis longtemps, plus mon niveau de stress était élevé. Je pense avoir appris une leçon ce jour-là, une leçon douloureuse. Ce que nous pensons être si important à l'époque, ne l'est vraiment pas aussi important que nous le pensons. La vie continue quand vos plans tournent mal.
Il y a une raison pour laquelle vous devez apprendre à vivre un jour à la fois. Dieu a promis des conseils et une direction pour aujourd'hui même. Maintes et maintes fois, la Bible souligne l'importance d'aujourd'hui. Dieu a promis : « Tels seront vos jours, ainsi sera votre force » (Deutéronome 33 :25, NKJV).
Lorsque le Christ a enseigné à ses disciples à prier, il a dit : « C'est pourquoi, priez de cette manière : ‘Notre Père qui es aux cieux, que ton nom soit sanctifié. Que ton règne vienne, que ta volonté soit faite sur la terre comme au ciel. Donne-nous aujourd'hui notre pain quotidien!" Voilà, vous l'avez à nouveau. Donnez-nous ce jour – pas demain – pas l'année prochaine – mais répondez à nos besoins aujourd'hui.
Vous pourriez être frustré parce que votre emploi du temps et vos objectifs n'ont pas fonctionné comme vous l'aviez prévu. Il y a de bonnes nouvelles ! Dieu promet de l'aide pour aujourd'hui seulement. Il a dit : « Le Seigneur est bon, une forteresse au jour de la détresse, et il connaît ceux qui se confient en lui » (Nahum 1:7). Vivre dans le présent ne signifie pas un mépris total du passé ni une attitude nonchalante envers l'avenir. Cela signifie que vous trouvez la grâce de Dieu pour faire face au vol qui est annulé, au stock qui s'effondre, au prêt qui n'est pas remboursé et aux espoirs pour demain qui ne se matérialisent pas. Oui, Dieu nous aide à trouver sa force pour aujourd'hui.

Se vanter de demain
13 Maintenant, écoutez, vous qui dites : « Aujourd'hui ou demain, nous irons dans telle ou telle ville, nous y passerons un an, ferons des affaires et gagnerons de l'argent.
14 Eh bien, vous ne savez même pas ce qui arrivera demain. Quelle est votre vie? Vous êtes une brume qui apparaît pendant un petit moment puis disparaît.
15 Au lieu de cela, vous devriez dire : « Si c'est la volonté du Seigneur, nous vivrons et ferons ceci ou cela.
16 En l'état, vous vous vantez de vos projets arrogants. Toutes ces vantardises sont mauvaises.
17 Si donc quelqu'un sait le bien qu'il doit faire et ne le fait pas, c'est un péché pour lui.
