A New and Natural Method of Treatment of Peptic Ulcer Disease

FROM NOVEMBER 1979 TO MAY 1982,  I had the "honor" of serving time at "Evin" prison, Tehran , Iran. Evin is the historical prison which has set the pace of revolution in the country. It is composed of several "blocks." At Evin, people experienced the course, dimensions, and (as a result of the power struggle from within) the transformation of the revolution. The conditions and the emotional aspects of life there could not be compared with the experiences or settings most readers have known.

A predominantly starch diet was available. There was no shortage of medication. A critical shortage of cell space at the onset woefully deteriorated. Any professional contact had to be in the presence of the guards, who were always suspicious! I was lucky to have been able to make my observations in Block 3 when I was waiting clarification of my own situation. There I could follow-up my patients before movement became restricted and inmates were confined to their completely isolated individual or group cells.

Men and women from all walks of life, of all ages, under the prevailing uniform condition there, unfolded their particular response to different levels of stress.

Clinically diagnosed peptic ulcer disease was one major manifestation of this stress.Younger people (men much more than women) presented the typical symptoms and signs, from simple epigastric pain experienced for the first time, to recurrence and exacerbation of complaints in patients with chronic ulcer disease. Symptoms even reached the point of semi-consciousness from the intensity of pain, suggesting impending perforation; intermittent pain during the day or night; pain which limited sleep; and continuous intense fluctuation pain. Melena with anemia and hematemesis, on many occasions, supported the clinical diagnosis.

In January 1980, a chance incident forced me to treat one of the inmates , who late one night sought relief for unbearable pain, with 500 cc (two glasses) of water. His pain became less severe and then disappeared completely after 8 minutes. He was an experienced "sufferer" with a long history of repeated treatment, and found relief of pain with water a surprising but welcome experience, particularly as it permitted him to avoid any contact with the guards. He agreed to take the same amount of water every 3 hours as if he were maintaining a diet of nine "meals" a day, during his waking hours; he took three regular meals and six "water meals." The water intake was regular. Food was eaten as it arrived, to allow for the fluctuating time of arrival. The little pain he felt in between his "meals" became less severe and disappeared totally after 3 days. I told him to maintain this diet for 6 weeks. he was given no other type of medication. He had achieved a "clinical cure" with water only for the duration of his stay of a few months in the environment that had "caused" the symptomatic recurrence of an ulcer previously diagnosed by x-ray.

The result of this simple method of "treatment" seemed now too good to be abandoned or ignored. I pointed out the advantages of not depending on medication by this method, under the circumstances, especially to those who had a long history and had tried various methods of treatment with the number of medications available. Those who tried the method were satisfied. The final acceptance by everyone in Block 3 came when a man in his 20s, who had a long history of duodenal ulcer disease, developed another episode of pain at 1 P.M. His symptoms gradually worsened; antacids that he had taken and the several tablets of cimetadine he had kept against such a day did not help. By 11 P.M., he had so much pain that he had become semiconscious. Absolute relief came in 20 minutes after swallowing 500 cc water followed by another 250 cc water 15 minutes later. This total recovery was a  source of amazement to me and to the young man's friends who could not believe his transformation. This simple method became the accepted standard treatment for peptic ulcer disease pain in Block 3 of Evin prison, accepted even by those who had political obsessions and personal prejudice.

The group of men in Block 3 were slowly changing because of investigation and sentencing. More and more, these men who suffered ulcer disease pain accepted this "new method" of treatment (recommended even now) now consisted of one glass of water (250cc) half an hour before meal, and an equal amount 2½ hours after each meal (i.e., 1,500 cc of water /day of 3 meals). The patients were told they could drink an extra amount if they were thirsty. The duration of treatment recommended was between 4 and 6 weeks, in keeping with the average time an actual ulcer would take to heal.

A "maintenance course" of a glass of water (250 cc) before breakfast and a similar amount 2½ hours after the three meals in "severe stress cases" proved most effective.

High urine volume and, therefore, sodium loss produced cramps in some of the first patients. As a result, extra salt intake with meals was recommended. Some of the people taking this treatment had to get up in the middle of the night to urinate. These two physiological side effects were the only observed disadvantages to this method of treatment.

The repeated positive results even in patients with a long history of duodenal ulcer disease who responded to treatment with water, who even chose this method in preference to the standard medication methods of treatment, even when antacids, H2 blocking agents, and anticholinergics were readily available, indicated to me that we were dealing with a physiological correctable or controllable state. As a result of lucky access to printed information on peptides of the GI tract, the subsequent stage of my clinical formulations became feasible.

During the last part of confinement, I became involved at the main prison hospital which drew patients from section clinics. Many patients with hematemesis* and/or melena with low blood pressure and/or low hematocrit were seen. They were treated with blood transfusion (up to 8-10 X 250-450 cc of blood to maintain a systolic blood pressure of 90 - 100 mm mercury or a hematocrit of 30). Except for the first ill patient who was given cimetidine (4 tablets of 200 mg for 2 days only, with a supplement of a late night injection of cimetidine again only for 2 days), none of the patients received chemical medication. They were provided with a large jug of strong sugar-sweetened water, with instructions to drink a glass every hour. This period gradually increased to a glass every 1½ hours and then every 2 hours. After 36-48 hours when a feeling of "hunger" would begin, light food with water according to the foregoing schedule was the only treatment needed; i.e., once again, the clinical improvement was definite and no medicines (antacid or H2 blocking agents) were necessary to reestablish improvement. No surgery became necessary. There was no mortality from GI bleeding in these patients. No recurrence of bleeding was seen.

[NOTE: *Hematemesis or haematemesis is the vomiting of blood. The source is generally the upper gastrointestinal tract, typically above the suspensory muscle of duodenum. Patients can easily confuse it with hemoptysis (coughing up blood), although the latter is more common. Hematemesis "is always an important sign". Hematemesis indicates that the bleeding is from the upper gastrointestinal tract, usually from the esophagus, stomach, or proximal duodenum. Occasionally hemoptysis or vomiting of swallowed blood from epistaxis can be confused with hematemesis.]

[NOTE: The hematocrit, also known by several other names, is the volume percentage of red blood cells in blood. It is normally 45% for men and 40% for women. Blood is composed mainly of red blood cells and white blood cells suspended in an almost clear fluid called serum. The hematocrit test indicates the percentage of blood by volume that is composed of red blood cells. The condition called "anemia" results from having too few red blood cells.]

The authorities, who by now could not block to ignore these results any longer, conducted an unofficial trial of their own. They had a  questionnaire, which I drew up, reproduced in multiple copies. In a closed "off-limits" section with 600 persons, 240 (40%) were using medication to treat their "ulcer" pain. These people filled out the form and went on the water treatment. The result was dramatic. Water treatment for peptic ulcer disease became the standard form of treatment for that institution and has survived beyond my enthusiasm and incarceration!

During the 2½ years in prison, I must have seen well over 3,000 patients with ulcer symprom. I follow-up about 600. The follow-up information from the rest came to me from their guards, from physicians in charge of other sections, and from chance meetings or messages received. The almost total lack of demand for antacid from the pharmacy during the last few months was an indicator of the success of this treatment, which had spread to all the sections. Even the prison authorities adopted this method for themselves, for they too suffered from peptic ulcer! The final recognition came when my captors, who earlier would have shot me with the least excuse, later confirmed in writing to the Medical Council, the  effectiveness of this new method of treatment of peptic ulcer disease, requesting them to inform the medical profession of Iran through their journal.

The implications of this method of treatment seem important, especially the importance or usefulness of "a glass of water" as a diagnostic tool. The following points deserve emphasis:

  1. Experience with thousands of patients showed that simple, clinical peptic ulcer disease complaints, the ones in whom a doctor would not suspect a complication, respond to this method of treatment. One glass of water (250 cc) relieves pain within 3 - 8 minutes. Sometimes a little more may be necessary.

  2. A few cases of "appendix pain" without other clinical manifestations also responded and became pain-free. Be it from a response of the ileocoecal valve or a cutaneous representation of common thoracic nerve roots, this observation indicates that a

Image result for ileocecal valve

site of pain other than epigastric may herald a clinical picture of duodenal ulcer (d.u) disease.

  3. Of the few patients who did not respond to this treatment, further questioning and investigation revealed other pathology. A colleague's case diagnosed a "d.u." when he adopted this method of treatment for his patients (he is conducting an open trial), developed severe "pain and signs" precipitating the need for diagnostic surgery. The condition proved to be acute cholecystitis.

  4. In the majority of patients, the relief of pain was preceded by eructation of gas "indicating" that the passage of diluted acid was made possible after what may be relaxation of the pyloric sphincter.

In view of this experience, I suggest that a different interpretation of the "absolute" validity of the design and the conclusions of the "randomized clinical trials" on peptic ulcer is necessary. The water used to swallow a "pill," be it the actual medicine under test or the placebo control (up to now considered inert), has proven to have a definite (physiological) effect of its own. It is possible to theorize that water has its effect before the pharmacologic substance under study achieved optimum blood levels. My experience also suggests that the high cure rate with placebo in controlled studies reported up to now were not without a good reason. Any interpretation or comparison of medication against "placebo" should be reconsidered, due to the body's response to water as a "natural medicine," although in insufficient volume and not at the peak of secretion of acid (in d.u. patients). I think that water must be essential in maintaining homeostasis through the appropriate peptides in the region.

Your Body’s Many Cries for Water

RARE indeed are those books destined to become all-time classics. Even rarer are books destined to accomplish a Paradigm shift in any major area of modern knowledge. Of still greater rarity are books destined to benefit the health of countless millions of human beings, at no cost to them. Such a landmark book is “Your Body’s Many Cries for Water” by Dr. F. Batmanghelidj. He is a London-educated Iranian medical doctor who has made revolutionary discoveries about the water metabolism of the human body. His astounding basic breakthrough was made while he was confined to a Teheran prison, this being a unique circumstance in itself.

ARISTOCRATIC LINEAGE
Dr. Batmanghelidj is of aristocratic lineage in his native Iran, and when the Shah was overthrown, the doctor was arrested and jailed with more than 3,000 other well-born victims of the Khomeini revolution. While these unfortunates wore awaiting execution, Dr. Batmanghelidj was assigned as their medical officer pending his own appearance before a firing squad. He had no medical resources other than water, in an environment pervaded by stress and terror. Indeed, the doctor found himself incarcerated in a gigantic stress laboratory.

This became the milieu in which fundamental discoveries were made regarding the medicinal and functional value of water. These are discoveries that have eluded giant medical trusts, vast hospital complexes, and battalions of medical Professors, universities that boast about their sophisticated research facilities, and all the vaunted resources of the pharmaceutical industry. None of them, or indeed, all of them combined, were capable: of penetrating to the bedrock of human health: adequate daily water intake.

Without realizing it initially, Dr. Batmanghelidj was working with clinical controls in place. Prison discipline enabled him to follow up his patients, who had no possibility of evasion. Forced to use water medicinally, and water alone, Dr. Batmanghelidj was astonished in following up his patients, to find that water was effecting full cures of diverse, normally ineradicable diseases. These cures occurred in a complete fashion not seen in response to medication, which “treats” or “controls” such recalcitrant and diverse diseases as asthma, arthritis, high blood pressure and ulcers. Official medicine has only palliatives for these conditions, not cures.

Dr. Batmanghelidj was blessed by a first class medical training at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School of London University, one of the most respected medical schools in the western world. He was one of the last students of the eminent discoverer of penicillin, Sir Alexander Fleming. Thus steeped in classical orthodoxy, Dr. Batmanghelidj was totally embarrassed to find that water was doing in a dependable way, what medication had never been able to do. In his classical medical training, like orthodox doctors world-wide, Dr. Batmanghelidj was taught that it was the solid material in the body (the solute) that was important. Only an incidental status was assigned to the solvent aspects of the human body to water.

WATER HAS OTHER IMPORTANT PROPERTIES
Scientific research shows that water has many other properties beside being a solvent and a means of transport. These properties include:
1. A hydrolytic role in all aspects of body metabolism – water-dependent chemical reactions (hydrolysis).
2. At the cell membrane, the osmotic flow of water through the membrane can generate “hydroelectric energy” (voltage) that is converted and stored in the energy pools in form of ATP and GTP – two vital energy systems.
3. Water also forms a particular structure, pattern and shape that seems to be employed as the “adhesive material” in the bondage of the cell architecture. Like glue, it sticks the solid structure in the cell membrane together. It develops the stickiness of “ice” at higher body temperature.
4. Products manufactured in the brain cells are transported on “waterways” to their destination in the nerve endings for use in the transmission of messages. There seems to exist small waterways or microstreams along the length of nerves that “float” the packaged materials along “guidelines” called microtubules.
5. Proteins and the enzymes of the body function more efficiently in solutions of lower viscosity – this is true of all the receptors in the cell membranes.

The new paradigm shift for future research should be “Water, the solvent of the body, regulates all functions, including the activity of the solutes it dissolves and circulates”.

WATER CAN ACTUALLY TREAT CHRONIC DISEASES!
Elusive and seemingly unrelated conditions like dyspeptic pain, stress and depression, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, excess body weight, chronic fatigue, arthritis, asthma and allergies, insulin-independent diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, back problems and a host of lesser complaints that bedevil human beings, have all yielded to the ingestion of adequate daily water. Dr. Batmanghelidj identifies Alzheimer’s as due to dehydration of the brain.

Dr. Batmanghelidj has personally treated with only water well over 3,000 persons with dyspeptic pain, with the result that the clinical symptoms related to pain all disappeared. Eight 8-ounce glasses daily is the recommended regimen advocated by Dr. Batmanghelidj, to keep the human body fully hydrated. For each cup of coffee or other caffeinated drink, an additional, compensating eight-ounce glass of water is required.

WATER CAN TREAT BACK AILMENTS!
Perhaps the most welcome and convincing finding of Dr. Batmanghelidj is the key role played by dehydration in creating back ailments in human beings. The spinal discs consist of about eighty percent water. When these discs atrophy through varying degrees of dehydration, an afflicted human is off on one of the most miserable medical merry-go-rounds known to man. The human spine has to support about 75 percent of body weight. Without fully-hydrated and resilient spinal discs, the spine cannot perform its function properly. “Back problems” ensue.

Abnormal physical and nervous pressures develop and vertebrae become misplaced as the spinal discs collapse. In the USA, such back problems are now on an epidemic scale, largely defy physicians and surgeons, and endlessly persecute the afflicted.

Dr. Batmanghelidj has found that rehydration restores the integrity and resilience of the spinal discs. Simple exercises he has devised, create a natural vacuum effect: that draws the needed water back into the discs, whose proper bearing function is thereby eventually normalized. Contrast this with the dead-end, mechanistic “back surgery” that now consumes hundreds of millions of dollars in surgeons’ fees and hospital costs every year.

Back pains are among the body’s many cries for water, from which Dr. Batmanghelidj’s book has appropriately taken its title. The horrific wheezing of an asthmatic, which is one of the most embarrassing and distressing things anyone can witness, is similarly the body crying for water. Dr. Batmanghelidj has demonstrated that asthma is due to the body’s natural histamines constricting the lungs to limit any further loss of water via the breath. The person so afflicted is desperately dehydrated. In the prison environment in Iran, adequate water provided a cure for asthma one of the astonishing clinical results that first started Dr. Batmanghelidj thinking about the medicinal power of water.

WATER CAN TREAT HYPERTENSION
Dr. Batmanghelidj views the way hypertension is classically treated as “scientific absurdity”. The dehydrated body is desperately trying to hang on to its water volume. Uncomprehending physicians intervene with diuretics and literally force more water out of an already dehydrated body. The author gives lucid, comprehensible descriptions of the exquisite hydraulic design and engineering of the human body, and the diverse functions of the cells, capillaries and membranes as they operate to compensate for dehydration. If the body’s many cries for water are ignored, as they are in contemporary America, degenerative diseases are the inevitable consequence. A congress scrabbling to deal financially with an avalanche of degenerative disease, is verification enough that the time has come for a new medical paradigm.

Water Therapy?

Water therapy essentially is drinking water, especially when first getting up in the morning.

Water is important in hydrating the body; every cell needs water. Dr. Fereydoon Batmanghelidj discovered the healing powers of water and the link between dehydration and chronic illness 17 years ago. He was then serving a jail sentence as a political prisoner in Iran.

Whether this is therapy or is just stating the importance of drinking water is debatable. Although the Dr. F. Batmanghelidj feels it treats many diseases.

Be Careful the Next Time You Drink Tap Water

Did you know…that drinking water with fluoride lowers IQ? The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) categorizes fluoride as a “chemical having substantial evidence of developmental neuro-toxicity.”

This classification is backed by 24 studies linking fluoride exposure to lower I.Q in children, 3 studies connecting fluoride exposure to dysfunctional neuro-behavorial development, and 100 animal studies associating fluoride exposure to impaired cognitive function.

Unsafe drinking water is not just a concern of third world countries; the United States heavily fluoridates its water. In fact, 70% of U.S. public drinking water supplies contain dangerous levels of fluoride lowers IQ levels.

One measurable side effect of fluoridation is dental fluorosis, a condition in which tooth enamel does not properly develop because of overexposure to fluoride. Dental fluorosis can manifest as white spots, stains, and deep grooves in the tooth. Alarmingly, 41% of American children between the ages of 12 and 15 have some form of dental fluorosis, an indication that fluoride levels in water are not safe.

Dental fluorosis provides visual proof that fluoride is a toxin, and it is logical to assume that fluoride’s toxic effects do more than just damage developing teeth.

Despite numerous studies highlighting the damage fluoride lowers IQ, inflicts on developing brains, health agencies in the United States and other fluoridating countries refuse to lend credibility to the findings. They have criticized the methodology of the studies, the majority of which have been conducted in China, but fail to conduct studies of their own to either refute or validate the claims.

Take for instance a highly publicized study of 512 children between 8 to 13 years living in 2 Chinese villages. Researchers ruled out lead exposure and iodine deficiency as possible causes of reduced IQ. They did not study children with a history of brain damage or disease, and none of the participants consumed brink tea, a beverage high in fluoride lowers IQ.

Neither village was exposed to fluoride pollution from industrial causes such as coal burning, thereby allowing researchers to zero in on water fluoridation as the primary culprit. Results showed that 28% of children in areas with low levels of fluoride in the drinking water scored IQ levels in the normal to high range, whereas only 8% of children in areas with high levels of fluoridated water exhibited normal to high IQs. In high-fluoride neighborhoods, 15% of children had scores reflecting mental retardation versus 6% of children in low-fluoride communities.

Proponents of fluoride will argue that the Chinese children were exposed to fluoride-enhanced drinking water at much higher levels than fluoridated water in the U.S. Paul Connett, Ph.D, director of the Fluoride Action Network refutes this argument, claiming, “the levels of the fluoride in the community where the lowered IQs were recorded were lower than the EPA’s so-called ‘safe’ drinking water standard for fluoride of 4 ppm and far too close for comfort to the levels used in artificial fluoridation programs (0.7 – 1.2 ppm).”

Experts such as Arvid Carlsson, Nobel laureate in medicine/physiology, advocate against exposing infants to fluoride levels greater than that found in breast milk. Unfortunately, infants fed formula reconstituted with fluoridated tap water are exposed to 250 times more fluoride than the amount found in mother’s milk. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has recommended lowering the fluoride level given to infants to 0.7 ppm, but this level is still 175 times more than the level of fluoride in breast milk!

Having fluoride exposure and seeing that fluoride lowers IQ is just one of the effects. Sixteen animal studies have found that fluoride damages the hippocampus, an area of the brain responsible for forming new memories and retrieving old ones.

One animal study found that 1 ppm of fluoride prompted morphological changes in rats’ brains and kidneys, increased the presence of aluminum in the brain, and led to the formation of beta-amyloid deposits, a primary cause of Alzheimer’s disease.

Upon reviewing 5 IQ studies, the National Research Council (NRC) concluded: “it is apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain and the body by direct and indirect means.”

With the evidence mounting, why do countries such as the United States continue to implement fluoridation programs? History suggests that health agencies are more inclined to protect their fluoridation programs than the minds of their youth. One of the first animal studies published in the United States resulted in the firing of its lead author from the Forsyth Dental Center, a not-so-subtle warning to stop the case against fluoride lowers IQ.

Statistics show that the rates of Alzheimer’s, Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are steadily rising. While we may not know the exact causes of these brain impairments, we can safely assume that overexposure to toxins such as fluoride may have a significant impact on brain health.

To ensure optimal brain development avoid drinking tap water. You can further protect the health of your brain by adding 35% food grade H2O2 to your drinking water.

If you mean drinking a gutful of water in the morning, also known as Water cure (therapy), it's a pre-scientific practice. There's no reason to think it helps with much, though it's probably relatively harmless.

“Water is nectar and medicine; it cures all the diseases, Says Veda”

“Water energy is one of the healing energies of cosmic energy.”

Water has tremendous energy referred to as the God of water (jal). Water is the energy of God. No one can survive without water. Water heals all the living being. Indian sages prayed the lord of water to kindly feed the humanity with the “medicinal water” (“jal oshadhi”) to get the food, health, pleasure, bliss and strength, as a mother feeds her infants, Says Rig Veda.

All the herbs grow in the water and all the herbs are in the water as well, says Vedas. Water is a life force and God blessings for living beings. Therefore, it is essential to intake the water and avoids the wastage of water.

Spiritual Value of Water

1. Not only, mental or physical, but the spiritual value of water is also very high. No one can depart from this world without drinking divine water. Hence, holy water is offered to the person leaving the world.

2. Not only the body but also soul needs water to leave the attachment from the body and therefore the bones or ashes of the departed body are offered to Holy Goddess Ganga.

3. Goddess Ganga came on the earth from the heaven to give peace and bliss to the people living on the earth and going to depart from the earth both.

4. In various occasions people take bath in holy Ganga to clean their sins.

5. Some people wish to live near to rivers to get emotional healing from water. Breathing and living near to rivers and lakes emotionally heals people from stress, anxiety and depressions.

~Helps control constipation in 1 day, acidity in 2 days, diabetes in 7 days, cancer in 4 weeks, pulmonary TB in 3 months, gastric in 10 days and Blood Pressure & hypertension in 4 weeks.

I consider water therapy that type of therapy where one gets into water that is warm and soaks for the benefits of this water, itself. When one gets into a whirlpool for relaxation this is the most common form of water therapy, known. Soaking in warm water that is also moving can be very beneficial to the muscles of ones body, especially if there is soreness in certain areas of the body. It can also be a very relaxing form of therapy for the person, it relieves tension from the person in the water. The main thing to remember, is not to stay in the water for very long periods of time, otherwise, one will become very dizzy upon getting out of the water, possibly causing injury to that individual. I have done this on occasion. If this does happen all benefits of the therapy are lost. When done correctly it can be very rewarding to you. It feels good!

I find this to be a great question to consider in view of Dr. Luc Montagnier’s recent studies. Water Memory (Documentary of 2014 about Nobel Prize laureate Luc Montagnier) My on-going question is what the ramifications are for digital biology and digital medicine when we determine how often the water molecules in the human body are replaced. Some say every 16 days … others longer. Irrespective of the current understanding, the question is indeed compelling. (Watch Youtube click here

Whirlpool Therapy or Water Therapy as you put it is the combination of both heated and cold water baths that help people suffering from chronic pain and many other disorders. Its also become very common in the sports medicine world for its benefits like increased muscle recovery and more.

BENEFITS OF WHIRLPOOL THERAPY ON TENDONITIS
So after years of working in physical therapy, I recently became a patient myself. 20 years of yoga practice and 10 years as a massage therapist had gifted me with tendonitis in both wrists. Suffering from chronic wrist pain, I was a little skeptical when my doctor suggested a physical therapist specializing in sports medicine. I just didn’t think there was much they could do for me. 4 months later, I’m stoked to report, I’m primarily pain free!

One of my favorite modalities my physical therapist used was a therapeutic whirlpool. When he first suggested it, visions of my gym’s scary hot-tub filled my head. Luckily he set me straight and introduced me to what would become my new best friend; the therapeutic whirlpool.

Whitehall Hi-Boy Therapeutic Whirlpool

Here’s the low-down on Therapeutic Whirlpool Treatment

The therapeutic whirlpool I used was big enough for me to put my hands in (although they do make them big enough for your entire body) and my pt encouraged me to gently stretch and move while the water was moving. What I loved about it was it was extremely gentle on my wrists, but my range of motion always improved and my pain decreased. And who doesn’t love being able to pretend they’re getting a spa treatment at their physical therapist’s office?

Now what’s cool about the whirlpool is it’s versatile in its use depending on your pt goals, it all comes down to the temperature from the water. Warm water will help increase your circulation, while cold water helps decrease inflammation and swelling. My favorite though was the contrast bath. The contrast bath uses both a warm and cold bath. You spend a minute or two in each bath and switch back and forth for about 20 minutes. Theoretically this creates a “pumping” effect: rapidly opening and closing the arteries, which helps decrease swelling significantly. All I know is I experienced greater range of motion after the contrast bath and was able to then do the physical therapy exercises given to me to rehab my wrist without pain.

I loved the whirlpool so much especially how gentle it was I even recommended it to my sister who suffers from Arthritis. This modality is also great for anyone suffering from a fracture, plantar fasciitis, sprains, and tendonitis or even to treat wounds and scabbing.

So there you have it, the beginning of my love affair with whirlpool therapy. As your physical therapist if they offer it as part of their treatment, because it rocks.

Water therapy is drinking water first thing in the morning even before you brush your teeth and not eating anything for 1 hour after that.

The other Health Benefits of drinking water are:

It keeps your body hydrated.
It keeps your skin glowing.
It provides nutrients to the cells in your body.
Drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water keeps you healthy.
It helps in weight loss.
It helps in digestion.
It is good for diabetes.
As 70 percent of the earth is covered with water so is our body.

Absorbing warm water is one of the most seasoned types of option therapy, and there's justifiable reason motivation behind why this practice has stood the test of time. Research has indicated warm water therapy works ponders for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including fibromyalgia, joint inflammation and low back agony. "The examination demonstrates our predecessors hit the nail on the head. It improves you feel. It makes the joints looser.

Water therapy or hydrotherapy has been used since Egyptian times to treat physical problems. By swimming there is low impact on the joints and water gives our muscles something to push against.

Try water aerobics your muscles will have quite a workout!

The Romans used it too. Saunas open up the pores and cleanse the skin of impurities

It's practiced today in Iceland and has many health benefits like increasing circulation of blood flow. By going from hot to cold is very invigorating. And may even increase lifespan!

Water therapy generally means
-Drinking 8-9glasses of water everyday.
-Taking only water for 2-3 days.
-Taking hot or cold water bath.
-Shower cold water or hot water according to illness.
-Sitting on warm water tub for fomentation.
-Ice cold fomentation in case of injury.

All these come under water therapy .

Water, Salt , Sleep

Salt on your Tongue?

OK, so this sounds like the story my parents used to tell me that if you can put salt on the tail of a bird you can catch it…. now they’re saying if you put salt on your tongue (with a drink of water) you can sleep.

What?

A friend recently referred me to a book Water for Health, for Healing, for Life by F. Batmanghedlidj, MD.

Here’s an excerpt from it:
“Salt is vital for sleep regulation. It is a natural hypnotic. If you drink a full glass of water, then put a few grains of salt on your tongue and let it stay there, you will fall into a natural, deep sleep. Don’t use salt on your tongue unless you also drink water. Repeated use of salt by itself might cause nosebleeds. Routine intake of water and the addition of some salt to the diet will regulate sleep pattern.”

And then I noticed the following article on Dr Mercola’s site… citing salt as a natural antidepressant. Interesting.

Knowing that depression and insomnia have a link too… I think it’s worth a try.

Don’t forget to use a good quality unrefined sea salt… where the minerals balance is good.

And I’d love to hear some feedback on this. My friend says she has tried it, and it worked… but I’d like to see a lot more responses.
Write back and tell me how you go, both good and bad, please!
And is it like sleeping at the beach? Crashing waves? Salty sea? Just kidding.

I read about this in Women’s Day and it is true it really works… I have tried to tell friends and family to try it but they won’t they think I am crazy… But it really works well…

tim
I've recently had mouth sores while simultaneously having headaches. All ive done differently was rinsing my mouth with salt water, before going to bed. and i sleep like a rock with no headaches and the best sleep ever.

I’ve never tried it but will give it a go. I have read however that salt helps with the Serotonin levels, those that are low in serotonin will usually crave salt to help with the balance but it is vital to drink water! I find that when i am really run down I crave a lot of salty foods or just a pinch of salt.
If you think about it according to the above theory it works to the opposite of sugar… Now that makes sense.

I received the tip from an app on my phone & tested it out. I was sleep within a few mins!! It was the best sleep I had in a long time.

got this tip out of the who knew book. got a few questions. seemed to work night before last but not tonight. how much salt do you put on your tongue? do you swallow it? water before or after or both? also what kind of salt – plain ole morton – sea – kosher? could using this on a long-term basis raise blood pressure. (salting food raises blood pressure) even though this is much less. thanks for any input. i really need help sleeping. hey it worked once!

sripal jain
Same tip i was reading on iphone app and tried it out and it works best for me, its like a hypnotic sleep and i get refreshed and energetic in the mornning

The salt cure works often for me but not always. About four out of five times. Not bad! I also suppressed laughter when i heard about it the first time but what have i to lose. Now i am the one that gets the incredulous looks when i talk about my experience with salt and sleeplessness.

Dimitri
It works. Glas of water before bed and and suck on some salt grains and I fall asleep in no time.

MikeAugust
This works. It’s amazing that we have become so conditioned as “consumers” to trust almost anything we see/hear in commercials, which convince us to buy medicines, and we scoff at the notion that the body’s basic needs can be easily treated with things like proper nutrition and hydration. I read Dr. Batmanghelidj’s book, “Your Body’s Many Cries For Water: You’re Not Sick, You’re Thirsty — Don’t Treat Thirst With Medication” and every sentence in that book makes complete sense.

The body’s most basic requirement is water, salt and potassium to maintain proper hydration. While we can last several weeks without food, if need be, we will die within only several days without water. Drugs are chemicals, and the side-effects of many of them can be shocking and downright life-threatening.

I am 63. After almost 20 years of believing I had allergies and wasting hundreds and hundreds of dollars and more on allergy meds that didn’t do anything – some common drugs like decongestants and antihistamines were actually making the problem WORSE – Dr. Batmaghelidj’s book convinced me I was severely dehydrated. I now take NO MEDICATION WHATSOEVER and all my “allergy” symptoms are gone.

Placing on the tongue a few grains of unrefined sea salt (recommended because it has all the natural minerals that are removed from common table salt) after drinking a glass of water will make you sleep very soundly.

I highly recommend the book.

Thanks Mike for your comments. The salt suggestion was a bit left of field, and it is interesting to know that you have both tried the method and found it helpful. Hydration is very important. Yes, often the basics are what we are not doing, thinking instead that complicated solutions are required. Thanks for your suggestion and book recommendation.

Many people consume too much salt, but new research may have uncovered one reason people crave it -- it might lead to a better mood.

Researchers found that when rats are deficient in sodium chloride (common table salt), they shy away from activities they normally enjoy. A loss of pleasure in normally pleasing activities is one of the most important features of psychological depression.

If salt is a natural mood-elevating substance, it could help explain why so many are tempted to over-ingest it, even though it's known to contribute to high blood pressure, heart disease and other health problems.

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Most processed foods and restaurant meals contain very high levels of sodium from refined salt, and account for about 77 percent of Americans’ total salt intake. (90 percent of the money most Americans spend on food is for processed foods, and every one of these foods is loaded with unnatural highly processed salt).

One 2007 study, featured on BBC News found that the amount of salt consumed in just one Pizza Hut meal is more than twice the recommended daily limit for an adult and four times the daily limit of a six year old.

However, the vilification of salt is similar to the issue of saturated fat, which is in fact a healthy type of fat, but is typically consumed in many fast foods that also contain large amounts of trans fats, which can cause a number of health problems. Similarly, whereas natural salt is a healthy ingredient, processed table salt can be a problem.

Natural salt is in fact essential for life and play a key role in:
  • allowing fluids to pass in and out of your cells
  • helping carry nutrients to your cells
  • helping nerve cells in your brain and body to transfer information
  • various metabolic reactions in your body
  • regulating blood pressure
An adequate intake of sodium is also required for optimal growth of fat, bone and muscle tissues. According to the study above, severe sodium restriction may negatively affect your glucose metabolism and disturb normal blood viscosity. They also found that sodium deficiency can induce behavioral changes such as reduced motivation, fatigue, and feelings of depression.

However, it’s important to understand that the salt used in processed foods is the highly processed variety, and NOT at all the same as the natural salt your body actually craves to perform these vital functions, including the maintenance of proper brain function.

Personally I seek to avoid all processed foods whenever possible and rarely consume regular table salt. I like the taste of Himalayan salt so much I carry it with me when I travel, and as many who have dined with me know, I typically put it on the table and offer others to try it and they just love it.

Of course I warn them that Himalayan salt tastes so good, many who try it like it so much they refuse to use regular table salt again.

Mood Changes May Signal Sodium Deficiency

In the scientific review above, the researchers discovered that sodium taste as well as certain motivational/affective processes converge at sites in your limbic forebrain, suggesting that taste and motivational processes overlap, and because they are related to your sodium homeostasis, changes in sodium levels can influence your behavior both in terms of mood and taste cravings.
In fact, changes in mood are frequently among the first signs of a nutritional deficiency in your diet.

For example, people who work day-to-day in extremely hot environments and lose large amounts of sodium through sweating commonly complain of fatigue, headache, difficulty concentrating, and sleep disturbances — symptoms that are often associated with psychological depression.

In a classic study in 1936, they showed that it took about seven days to make subjects sodium deficient when consuming sodium-free diets and sweating.

Mood-related symptoms reported by the subjects included:
  • loss of appetite
  • loss of capacity to experience pleasure and joy
  • difficulty concentrating
  • excessive fatigue
  • general sense of exhaustion
Since they did not detect any changes in blood pressure or pulse rate, and none of the subjects experienced cramps, it was determined that the deficiency did not initially disturb physiological functioning to any noticeable degree.

Interestingly, the researchers believed it is possible that changes in mood and appetite are among the first noticeable manifestations of sodium deficiency.

Salt actually becomes more palatable as a consequence of sodium loss, so when you become deficient in sodium, your taste buds play a fundamental role in restoring the balance.

People suffering from sodium deficiency typically report having a peculiar sensation in their mouth that is more commonly associated with thirst than with craving salt. People with weak adrenals usually report that they crave salty types of foods.

How Much Salt Does Your Body Need?

Normally, the homeostasis of your body fluids is corrected primarily by your kidneys, and proper renal handling of sodium is necessary for normal cardiovascular function. Given that your survival and normal physical development are dependent on adequate sodium intake and retention, the central question is – how much salt do you really need?

Previous research has shown that the worldwide average for salt intake per person is about 10 grams per day. Meanwhile, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommend a maximum of 2.4 grams per person, which still may be more than double what your body really needs.

As an example, the New Guinea Highlanders average daily salt intake is around 0.5 g/day, and there is no evidence they are unhealthy. In fact they show far less cardiovascular disease than populations that consume the worldwide norm.

A strictly vegetarian diet contains about 0.75 grams of salt per day, and it’s been estimated that the Paleolithic diet contained about 1 to 1.5 grams, which was clearly sufficient for survival, even though it falls far below the FDA recommended amount.

I believe it’s clear that most Americans consume FAR too much processed salt that offers minimal health benefits. But if you want to find out whether you’re eating the proper amount of salt for your body, a fasting chemistry profile that shows your serum sodium level can give you a good idea, so that you can modify your diet accordingly.

Your ideal sodium level is 139, with an optimal range of 136 to 142.

If it is much lower, you probably need to eat more salt; if it is higher, you’ll likely want to restrict your salt intake.

Keep in mind that if you have weak adrenals you will lose sodium and need to eat more natural salt to compensate.

Why You Should Avoid Regular Table Salt

As I mentioned earlier, there’s a big difference between standard, refined table salt and natural health-promoting salt.

Your table salt is actually 97.5 percent sodium chloride and 2.5 percent chemicals such as moisture absorbents and iodine. This salt is dried at an excessively high temperature -- over 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit -- that actually negatively alters the natural ionic physical structure of the salt.

Virtually all of the naturally occurring minerals that are typically in the salt have been processed out. Additionally, the processing imparts unhealthy vibrational frequencies into the salt, somewhat like a harmful homeopathic.

Moreover, when your body attempts to eliminate the excess processed salt, water molecules surround the sodium chloride to break it up into sodium and chloride ions in order to help your body neutralize these ions.

To accomplish this, water is taken from your cells, which tends to compromise the fluid balance in your cells.

You may be surprised to learn that for every gram of sodium chloride that your body cannot get rid of, your body uses 23 times the amount of water to neutralize the salt. Eating common table salt therefore causes excess fluid in your body tissue, which can contribute to:
  • Unsightly cellulite
  • Rheumatism, arthritis, and gout
  • Kidney and gall bladder stones

Considering the fact that the average American eats 40 to 60 grams of salt each day this is really a pervasive issue. One reason for this overconsumption (other than the fact that it’s in virtually every type of processed food you buy) is that salt appears to be addictive, in a manner similar to that seen after regular consumption of coffee or nicotine.

Your Body Needs Salt – Choose Unprocesed Salt!
Considering the many biological functions facilitated by salt, it would be a mistake to eliminate it entirely. However, it’s important to make sure you’re consuming the right kind of salt – the kind of salt your body can actually process and use.

I believe it’s perfectly fine and beneficial to use a pure, natural salt, such as Celtic or Himalayan salt, to add flavor to your food. (Personally, I far prefer the pink Himalayan salt, but either one will do as they are unprocessed salts and are not associated with most of the problems of commercial salts.)

Natural salt is dried naturally, and is not chemically processed so it contains minerals that your body actually needs to function normally.

If you are following the advice in Take Control of Your Health and have already eliminated processed foods from your diet, then your salt consumption will automatically be very low, as the only salt you’ll be consuming is what you personally add to your meals.

If your sodium levels are too high and you need to avoid salt, you can use lemon, garlic and other fresh herbs as replacements that will give your food added flavor and a healthy kick.
