Rheumatoid Joint Pain

Image result for rheumatoid joint pain

(Rheumatoid Arthritis)

When any of your joints ー the vertebral joints, the joints of the fingers and the hand, or even the knee and the ankle joints ー begin to signal aching pains that come and go, and every time these pains stay longer, the first thought that should occur to you is: "My body is severely short of water." This initial assumption is a "cardinal must." My published clinical and scientific research show that chronic pains of the body are indicators of chronic dehydration.

We lose our thirst sensation at a steady rate from the age of 20 onward. As a result, our bodies becomes chronically dehydrated without being able to recognize the gradually increasing water shortage.
The human body has no water storage system to draw on in times of need. If the body needs to shift water for a particular function, initially it draws the water volume that is inside the cells. Any pure water that you drink will also try to get into the cells. That is to say, it leaves the blood circulation and gradually works its way into the cells.

There is a predetermined pattern for priority distribution of the available water to the essential organs of the body.
1.The liver takes priority; all the food and water intake of the human body's is initially processed through the liver. ⬃

2.The brain ⇩, which is more or less 1/50th of the human body weight in an average-sized person, receives between 18 and 20 percent of the total circulation that is fully oxygenated.

3. The lungs receive 100 percent of the unoxygenated blood that also contains 100 percent of the concentrated of the food and water supply that has passed through the liver. When the body is short of water, the blood that goes through the lungs is highly concentrated.

17 YEARS OF CHRONIC PAIN GONE!

Date: 1-30-08
Subject: Testimonial..RSD.75% cured with Water Cure!
From: D R
To: Bob Butts

My name is D R. I am a 50yr. old LPN disabled with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy( RSD )for 17 + years. I have also been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, CFS, TOS, & many other chronic pain syndromes. I was a victim of hospital errors/abuse 12 days at a local Hospital in 2005. Due to all the trauma & Unnecessary life threatening complications my RSD spread throughout my body and was in a major flare-up. I was in bed 20-22 hours a day for the next 2 years. I also developed numerous other health problems such as: constipation & rectal bleeding, weight gain & muscle atrophy of my left leg. Most were caused by medication, inactivity, dehydration & a poor diet (nutritional deficiencies). I was out of the house 3 times...Total. I was like a prisoner trapped in my own body & mind. My body was riddled with intolerable pain & my mind was crippled with depression, guilt & even dark thoughts of suicide.I was Painfully alive...Not living. Thru my 17 + years of horrific RSD pain I have had over 55 Stellate Ganglion Nerve Blocks, 9 ribcage nerve blocks, Intra-Spinal Epidural Catheters, Hundreds of Trigger point injections, Pt, Ot, acupuncture, other therapies & have run the gamut with medications. All with minimal or No relief of pain. I felt helpless & hopeless.

May 19, 2007 I started Dr. Batmanghelidj's Water cure. Within 2 weeks my pain had decreased 75% ! My depression is gone & I lost 28 unwanted pounds in 5 months! I NEVER had 75% relief of pain with any costly medication or painful treatment. All of the other health problems are also relieved or gone! I have now regained much of my life back simply by adding the proper amounts of sea salt & water to a more nutritious diet. I have stopped drinking any caffeine; coffee, soda or alcohol. Caffeine dehydrates our bodies. Dehydration is the cause of most disease, pain & illness. Read the many testimonials of people helped or even Cured of diabetes ,cancer, pain & many diseases. God has truly Blessed me & shown me His mercy. He has given me a second chance...a new less painful life! Yet, the most amazing thing is my 17 + years of extreme pain, suffering & tears has enabled me the spiritual joy of helping others get well too naturally. I don't want anyone to suffer needlessly the way I did. Please Help me Help others obtain pain relief thru the Miracles of the Water cure!

Dear D R,

I just read your testimony on Bob Butts' website and it thrilled me to hear you praising our Lord for the miracle in your life. I pray that you are still feeling wonderful. I have been suffering with asthma for 30 years and after my 3rd child (born in June) I was severely ill with a lung capacity of an 85 year old. In Faith, I quit all my medicines to try and find natural help. Everything was so costly and skeptical. After a night of using my rescue inhaler numerous times, I got up and prayed for God to heal me. I believe He can. I then felt this prodding to "go and drink water." So I did, 32 ounces of it. My attack went away. I felt great!!!! I googled asthma and dehydration and by God's Grace found the water cure. I was running, not walking, everywhere that day, dancing with my kids and speaking long sentences without having to take a breath! The Lord led me to a scripture in Mark about giving a "cup of water" in His name, and then one, a couple verses later about being "salt" to the world. I know those words have profound spiritual meaning, but my God is also about the simple meanings. I have been asthma symptom free for 8 days, and I have no doubts that the Lord has healed me. I tell people this and they look at me like I am crazy and that has been hard. But then I read your testimony and the scriptures the Lord led you to and my joy is renewed!!! God is Good! I know He must be doing great things through you!

God Bless! Keep sharing your story!

Dear Jenni, thank you for the beautiful e-mail! God is so Great! He has given me such Blessed pain relief. I always say in God's time & God's way ! The 2 years I spent bedridden with Intolerable pain was for a reason.. His purpose. During those 2 years my body was riddled with pain & my mind was crippled by depression, hoplessness & even dark thoughts of suicide. My faith in God & the love for my children sustained me. During that time I read over 250 books. Many books on religion, spirituality & of most importance the Bible.I became more spiritual & closer to God,my Father. I realize now God was preparing me for my mission to help others get well naturally thru the Miracles of the Watercure and faith in Our Lord!

When I speak with people now who are suffering from severe pain & depression I am Truly speaking from my heart. I have been in that painful, lonely place that they are now at. I have walked a mile in their moccasin. I know Exactly what they are feeling & they know, that I too have experienced the same thing . To many people it is just a relief to talk to me knowing that I am listening with compassion & empathy. God has given me the wisdom of words to help console & guide other people to a healthier, happier life! I am humbled that God chose me to suffer & then made me well so that I can serve Him by helping others. I am thrilled that God has also Blessed you with relief from your asthma.I am sure you will stay healthy by following the watercure & praising God for his guidance! Please do keep in touch . I really care & pray for all who contact me... peace & healing... D R

Lyme Disease

After 13 years of suffering with Lyme disease, a possible cure has been stumbled upon. A cumulative effect of much research has produced the possibility that salt and vitamin C may be all that is needed to beat this elusive illness. Without going into a lot of detail, our theory is that Lyme is not just a bacterial disease, but also an infestation of microfilarial worms. Bacteria, worms, internal mites and the possibility of other creatures have been quite horrifying. Ticks can transfer many types of pathogens into the body of their host. It is also possible that the tick could pick up a new pathogen and pass it on to their next host, explaining why Lyme patients have different types of organisms within their bodies. Shortly after starting the treatment, we were shocked by the presence of the worms. Microfilarial worms live symbiotically with bacteria. They protect the bacteria from being exterminated by the antibiotics. Our theory is that the microfilarial worm, though possibly a nematode, is a parasitic nematomorph which we name Paragordius Lyme Incorporehumani. The Lyme bacteria is Borrelia burgdorferi, named after Willy Burgdorfer.

From experimenting with the treatment of salt and vitamin C, we settled on a dosage of 3 grams of salt and 3,000 mg of vitamin C, each dose taken 4 times per day.Depending upon one's weight this would approximate one gram for each ten pounds of body weight. We think total daily dosage should not exceed 18 grams of salt or Vitamin C per day, and 15 grams would be the average adult's dosage for a full 24 hour period. If the pills cause a problem they can be crushed or dissolved in water. To get an idea of the dosage, one teaspoon equals 5 grams; thus, one tablespoon would equal 15 grams. Please remember to drink plenty of water. We had been using CMC (Consolidated Midland Corporation), NDC#0223-1760-01, ordered through a pharmacy (no prescription required). This seems to be currently unavailable and pure salt in tablet form may be hard to find. Pure salt can be ordered over the internet at Saltworks. And for those who wish to remain with tablets buffered salt is available from Americarx.com. The vitamin C used is a GNC product, though any good quality vitamin C pill should work. We have no relationship with any company mentioned.

The Treatment can be grueling; taking it with food may aid in digestion. The results should be almost instantaneous. The Herxheimer reaction is an excretion of toxins from dying organisms; this will be experienced. Diarrhea will occur as your body sheds itself of the pathogens. The die-off will occur in cycles. Try to stick with it; it is well worth the inconvenience. Remember to drink plenty of water. Water is an important factor, not just in keeping yourself hydrated, but to make sure the treatment is circulating through your entire body. Salt is an electrolyte which your body needs to function properly. Please proceed through the next 16 pages on our journey to a cure. You can click on any photo and get a larger view and a little more info. The photographs are untouched and no dyes were added. Our specimens have been saved in case the integrity of the website is questioned. The last page will attempt to explain how this conclusion was reached.

Insects, arachnids, and ticks carry many different types of bacteria, viruses, nematodes, and nematomorphs. We have found many strange things, which we have tried to explain. We must say we are not medical professionals. We were just desperate people looking to get better. We have lost all faith in the medical profession. We were tired of having doors closed in our faces. We researched, contemplated, and came up with an idea. Research the late, great Linus Pauling. He took at least 18,000 mg of vitamin C every day. We tried to read everything we could about Lyme disease. Supposedly cows somehow beat Lyme disease. We considered, why cows, why not other animals? Cows love salt. Humans consume less salt today than they ever have. Early Americans consumed approximately 20 grams a day. The consumption has been drastically decreasing with each decade. Could it be that the decrease in salt consumption has allowed these new illness, such as Lyme, Chronic Fatique Syndrome,Fibromyalgia, Alzheimer's Disease, and Gulf War Syndrome to flourish. Now just lately, the whole salt scare has reversed and the researchers admit that they were wrong. So go ahead and shake that salt! As far as treatment goes, the results were forthcoming with the taking of 8 grams or more. We have actually increased to as much as 24 grams, but find that no one really wants to take that many pills in one day. Remember it is a one-two punch: the treatment is both salt and vitamin C. After years of suffering, finally life is back to normal. We still do not know if organisms lie dormant in our body; therefore, the treatment continues, simply as maintenance. The extreme pain no longer exists. The knot on the side of the neck is gone. We are at peace. We wish you all good health!

I had Lyme disease, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, cancer, asthma and allergies--all gone since using the water cure. You can see from our web site that we drink water 6 times a day like doses of medicine. Goal is 1/2 our body weight in ounces of water daily-we start less and work up to it. If any swelling of face or feet--we start even less. Sea salt-mineralized- not processed is eaten while drinking our dose of water then we eat food no later than 1/2 hr after drinking each dose. This varies with how soon we urinate after drinking. Our first dose of water and eating sea salt we urinate in a half hour. Doses 2-6 we urinate 2-3 hrs after having. If you urinate too much too soon, we have advise on web page called "bagel magic". We do not drink again unless thirsty for 2 hrs at least. Our web shows the foods we use and we walk at least 15 minutes twice a day, especially after dinner.* * Staying hydrated this way allows our immune system to strengthen and our DNA in our cells to repair damage done. The web site is **www.watercure2.org* * Look at "important information to know before using the water cure" and "the water cure recipe" which has many links you should read. Keep in touch and I will try to coach you while using this. Best wishes and God bless you. *Drew*

Hi Bob, I subscribe to your newsletter. The recent one on salt made me think you would appreciate this information on how salt can cure Lyme disease.

Why This Works

Our theory is that due to the decreased consumption of salt in our daily diets, we have allowed the invasion of parasites into our bodies and those of our pets and livestock. Over the centuries, man has traditionally consumed approximately 20 grams of salt daily. The only time, other than current day, that man's consumption has drastically decreased was during the Medieval Ages, when the landlords deprived the poor of salt, and the Black Death ravaged the population. Salt is an ancient bactericide and killer of many of man's pathogens. For centuries, twenty grams of salt daily was the average intake due to the way meats were cured and foods were preserved. Man certainly lived a more outdoors-man's lifestyle, yet there was no mysterious illness. Was it the presence of sodium chloride in his body that prevented Lyme from occurring? Lyme was first documented in the 1970's. It is around the same time we were inundated with the "No Salt Diet" craze. For years Japan had no cases of Lyme disease, and only recently with the new low salt soy sauce have cases been documented. As far as our animals go, cows were always given large blocks of salt licks, which were pure sodium chloride. The old ways protected our livestock from many pathogens that are coming into focus in today's society. Just recently, these blocks have become mineralized salt licks with minerals, medicines, and vitamins, that manufacturers claim is what our livestock need. They actually need the sodium chloride. This may explain the recent appearance of new illnesses such as Lyme, Mad Cow, and other parasitic illnesses among our livestock. They crave the sodium chloride. It is a natural instinct. Just the same way that a hunter knows that if he puts out a block of salt, the deer will come. Bear reportedly tear the bark off fallen trees to lick salt. There are salt caves in Africa that draw herds of elephants at night, and the mothers break off chucks of salt and fed it to their young. Maybe it is time we take a lesson from the animals. Eat more salt!

312 Meridian Exercise

312 Meridian Exercise

312 Meridian Exercise was developed by Professor Zhu Zongxiang based on the principles of the meridian system.

3 refers to massaging three acupoints of hegu on the hand neiguan on the wrist and zusanli on the knee.

1 refers to abdominal breathing, actually a form of simplified qigong (breathing exercise), through which Zhu believed could exercise the meridians in the abdomen area being closely related with chronic diseases.

2 refers to the physical exercise of both legs. Zhu believed the most simple and effective exercise is squatting down and standing up.

Profesor Zhu Zongxiang

91 year old (2014) Zhu Zongxiang has the vigor and vitality of man half his age. In a few old and shabby rooms situated near a group of ancient buildings in Beijing, the old doctor has stubbornly persisted in learning more about the meridians of acupuncture for more than 30 years. He often said he was a traitor to Western medicine.

Since the 1950s, he had been teaching physiology, a basic medical subject, in Peking Union Medical College Hospital. However, a decision in 1973 changed his life.

That year, he was inspired by Premier Zhou Enlai's appeal to Chinese medical experts to make clear the theory of acupuncture. Zhou's call for action followed US President Richard Nixon's visit to China in 1972.

Zhu joined the acupuncture meridian research group of the Institute of Biophysics under Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Meridian points were discovered in China 2,500 years ago. In Huang Di Nei Jing (The Medical Classic of the Yellow Emperor), one of the most important ancient medical classics, the meridians were recorded to have the function of "promoting circulation of Xueqi (Blood and Qi) and balancing yin and yang" and "determining life and death and treating hundred diseases."

The meridians were discovered to be a general controlling system for the human body and had the function of preventing diseases and promoting health and longevity. Today, TCM doctors still insert acupuncture needles into the acupoints along the meridians to treat diseases.

However, the existence of the meridians has always been questioned by Western medicine.

To justify the theory, doctor Zhu and his colleagues had spent more than 10 years to experiment with modern methods to demonstrate its biophysical existence.

In the 1980s, the researchers successfully showed the 14 meridians in human body through biophysical methods, which are surprisingly identical to that recorded in ancient classical meridian graph.

For visitors suspicious towards his research, doctor Zhu would proudly demonstrate his two proof tests to them.

He used a mallet to tap different areas on the elbow until the patient heard a loud sound measured through a device similar to the stethoscope. Zhu then marked a red spot at that point.

A line of the red spots determined by the same method is actually showing the position of a meridian, according to Zhu.

He would then place two electrodes of a current meter on the line and stimulation of the current could be felt. When one electrode was placed off the line, one would feel nothing. It showed that the meridian line had the lowest electric impedance, according to Zhu.

Even after Zhu published his breakthrough findings, the scientific world still did not change their skeptical attitude. And the debate on meridians is ongoing and interpretations of the phenomenon vary among scientists.

In ancient times, meridians was a philosophical concept invented by ancient Chinese doctors to summarize the general functions of the human body, according to Wu Gencheng, director of Institute of Acupuncture Research, Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University. The institute had been researching acupuncture for decades.

"We believe that the meridians' functions are closely related with the nerves, but it is impossible in modern science to find the material equivalent to the meridians described in the ancient time. It is hard to imagine a new passage way in the human body," said Wu.

In a further blow to Zhu's efforts, the Institute stopped funding their research.

Zhu did not give up and established Beijing Yanhuang Meridian Center to design the meridian based exercise to promote people's health and longevity. Zhu calls it the "3-1-2" method.

According to Zhu, 3 refers to massaging three acupoints of hegu on the hand neiguan on the wrist and zusanli on the knee.

"Physical exercise will involve the excitation of all the meridians spreading in the whole body," he explained.

In fact, in Zhu's views, the health benefits of all kinds of physical exercise are actually coming from the enhancement of the meridians in the process.

Daily exercises for 25 minutes will keep people young and vigorous, prevent and treat many senile and difficult diseases and relieve some common diseases, Zhu claims.

During the past 17 years, Zhu had formally trained more than 10,000 people, mostly elderly people. "Though the popularization of the exercise is slow, I obtain valuable proof information from them that the exercise is effective for health promotion," he said.

Zhang Yawen, 74, was a typical beneficiary of 312 exercises. She was a college professor and had long been inflicted by hypertension and arthritis, which often made her sleepless at night.

She claimed her health improved a lot after she followed 312 exercises for a few months. Now she has the confidence to live to 100.

Zhu conducted a study among more than 8,000 people attending his training class, 95 percent of whom suffered from chronic diseases such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, asthma, diabetes and arthritis. Most have seen major improvements after four weeks' practice.

Though Zhu had a strong wish to spread his exercise to a larger population, he still depends on opening workshops and distributing study materials to spread the word.

Do Not 'Kid' Your Kidneys

Kidney Function Blood Test

Routine kidney function is one of the most commonly performed blood tests.

The kidneys

The kidneys regulate the amount of water and salts that we have in our bodies. They do this by filtering the blood through millions of structures called nephrons. The kidneys also pass out certain waste products from the body. Urine is made up of the excess water, salts and waste products passed out by the kidneys down to the bladder.

Routine blood test of kidney function.
The usual blood test which checks that the kidneys are working properly measures the level of urea, creatinine and certain dissolved salts.

Urea is a waste product formed from the breakdown of proteins. Urea is usually passed out in the urine. A high blood level of urea ('uraemia') indicates that the kidneys may not be working properly, or that you have a low body water content (are dehydrated).

Creatinine is a waste product made by the muscles. Creatinine passes into the bloodstream, and is usually passed out in urine. A high blood level of creatinine indicates that the kidneys may not be working properly. Creatinine is usually a more accurate marker of kidney function than urea. The effect of muscle mass needs to be taken into account. A person with a lot of muscle and little fat on their body is likely to have a higher creatinine than a person who has a lot of fat and little muscle.

Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) provides a guide to kidney function. Although the level of creatinine in the blood is a useful guide to kidney function, the eGFR is a more accurate measure. Blood creatinine can be used to estimate the eGFR using age, sex and race. This is often calculated by computer and reported with the creatinine blood test. The normal value for eGFR is 90-120 ml/min. An eGFR below 60 ml/min suggests that some kidney damage has occurred. The value becomes lower with increasing severity of kidney damage.

Dissolved salts that are routinely measured are sodium, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate. They are sometimes referred to as 'electrolytes'. Abnormal blood levels of any of these may be due to a kidney problem. (Some other conditions may also alter the salt balance in the blood.)

[[Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate
Various different diseases, conditions and medicines can affect the function of the kidneys. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) does not diagnose any kidney disease but is a test to
assess how well your kidneys are working. A reading of greater than 90 ml/min/1.73m2 is normal.

What is the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)?

The eGFR is a test that is used to assess how well your kidneys are working. The test estimates the volume of
blood that is filtered by your kidneys over a given period of time. The test is called the estimated glomerular
filtration rate because the glomeruli are the tiny filters in the kidneys. If these filters do not do their job properly
then the kidney is said to have reduced or impaired kidney function.

The eGFR test involves a blood test which measures a chemical called creatinine. Creatinine is a breakdown
product of muscle. Creatinine is normally cleared from the blood by the kidneys. If your kidneys are not working
properly, the level of creatinine in the blood goes up.

The eGFR is then calculated from your age, sex and blood creatinine level. An adjustment to the calculation is
needed for people with African-Caribbean origin.

Stages of kidney function

The level of kidney function is divided into five stages:
Stage of Chronic Kidney Disease (eGFR;ml/min/1.73m)

Stage 1: the eGFR shows normal kidney function but you are already known to have some kidney damage or disease. For example, you may have some protein or blood in your urine, an abnormality of your kidney, kidney inflammation, etc.
(90 or more)

Stage 2: mildly reduced kidney function AND you are already known to have some kidney damage or disease. People with an eGFR of 60-89 without any known kidney damage or disease are not considered to have chronic kidney disease (CKD).(60 to 89)

Stage 3: moderately reduced kidney function. (With or without a known kidney disease. For example, an elderly person with ageing kidneys may have reduced kidney function without a specific known kidney disease.) (45 to 59)-(3A); (30 to 44)-(3B)

Stage 4: severely reduced kidney function. (With or without known kidney disease.)  (15 to 29)

Stage 5: very severely reduced kidney function. This is sometimes called end-stage kidney failure or established renal failure.
(Less than 15)

Note: it is not possible to assess the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) accurately in people with abnormal amounts of muscle and in people who have conditions that can affect the level of creatinine. This includes:

>People with muscle wasting conditions.

>People who have had an amputation of an arm or leg.

>Malnourished people.

>Pregnancy.

>People with acute kidney failure.

>People with a lot of fluid retention (edema).

>Children.]]

Who has a blood test of kidney function?

Routine kidney function is one of the most commonly performed blood tests. It may be done:

>As part of a general health assessment.

>If you have suspected low body water content (dehydration), when the urea level increases.

>If you have suspected kidney failure.(Read below, Acute Kidney Injury)  The higher the blood levels of urea and creatinine, the less well the kidneys are working. The level of creatinine is usually used as a marker as to the severity of kidney failure. Creatinine in itself is not harmful but a high level indicates that the kidneys are not working properly. So, many other waste products will not be cleared out of the bloodstream. You normally need treatment with dialysis if the level of creatinine goes higher than a certain value.

>Before and after starting treatment with certain medicines. Some medicines occasionally cause kidney damage as a side-effect. Therefore, kidney function is often checked before and after starting treatment with certain medicines.

Other tests of kidney function

The routine kidney blood test is a general marker of kidney function. If the blood test is abnormal it cannot say what is causing the kidney problem. Therefore, if you have an abnormal result you may need further tests to find the cause of a kidney problem. For example: urine tests, other blood tests, scans, X-rays, kidney biopsy, etc.

Acute Kidney Injury

Acute kidney injury is a condition where your kidneys suddenly stop working properly. Usually this happens when you are unwell from another illness. If you have acute kidney injury you are often already ill in hospital. If not, you will usually be sent to hospital to be looked after. The earlier acute kidney injury is picked up, and the more carefully you are monitored, the better the chance of your kidneys recovering.

Acute kidney injury used to be called acute renal failure.

Understanding kidneys: where they are and what they do

The two kidneys lie to the sides of the upper part of the tummy (abdomen), behind the intestines, and either side of the spine. Each kidney is about the size of a large orange but bean-shaped.

A large artery - the renal artery - takes blood to each kidney. The artery divides into many tiny blood vessels (capillaries) throughout the kidney. In the outer part of the kidneys tiny blood vessels cluster together to form structures called glomeruli.

Each glomerulus is like a filter. The structure of the glomerulus allows waste products and some water and salt to pass from the blood into a tiny channel called a tubule. The liquid that remains at the end of each tubule is called urine. The urine then passes down a tube called a ureter which goes from each kidney to the bladder. Urine is stored in the bladder until it is passed out when we go to the toilet.

The main functions of the kidneys are to:

>Filter out waste products from the bloodstream, to be passed out in the urine.

>Help control blood pressure - partly by the amount of water passed out of the body as urine and partly by making hormones which are involved in blood pressure control.

>Make a hormone called erythropoietin, which stimulates the bone marrow to make red blood cells. This is needed to prevent anaemia.

>Control the amount of fluid in the body.

>Help keep various salts and chemicals in the blood at the right level.

What is acute kidney injury (AKI)?

If you have AKI your kidneys suddenly stop working as well as they should. This means the fluid, salts and chemicals in your body can rise or fall to abnormal levels and make you very ill. If there is too much acid, or there are too many salts, in your body your other organs can be affected. For example, your heart, lungs, brain, muscles, eyes, etc, can stop working properly. If the kidneys aren't getting rid of enough fluid, your body can become overloaded with it. This can cause swelling in your legs, or make it difficult to breathe.

It is different from chronic kidney disease (CKD) which is a much more gradual process which can happen over many years.

How common is acute kidney injury (AKI)?

In people who are unwell in hospital, AKI is common. Nearly as many as 1 in 5 people in hospital develop AKI. It is even more common in patients who are extremely unwell in intensive care units.

Who develops acute kidney injury (AKI)?

AKI is more common over the age of 65. People who have another serious illness and are in hospital are more likely to develop it. It may happen to people who are having operations, especially if they are older. It may happen to some people who are having a special X-ray with a dye (contrast) which contains iodine.

Some things make you more likely to develop AKI in these situations - for example:

>Being older.

>Having another illness like diabetes, heart failure or liver disease.

>Being dependent on a carer for fluids.

>Having a bad infection (for example, from a urinary infection, chest infection or skin infection).

>Some medicines - for example:
-Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, diclofenac or naproxen.
-Some blood pressure pills that work on the kidney.
-Some antibiotics called aminoglycosides (such as gentamicin).
    -'Water tablets' (diuretics).

>Lacking in fluid in the body (being dehydrated).

>Another problem with your kidneys, such as CKD.

>Having had AKI before.

Children can develop AKI too. This is more likely if they have:

>Severe diarrhoea.

>A cancer of the blood cells.

>To rely on a parent or carer for fluids (more likely to become dehydrated).

>Low blood pressure.

>Another kidney illness such as nephritis.

>A severe infection.

What causes acute kidney injury (AKI)?

There are many things that can cause the kidneys to stop working properly. Sometimes it happens due to more than one cause.

Causes include:

>Severe infections.

>Blockage in the urinary system.

>Lack of fluid in the body (dehydration).

>Heavy bleeding (haemorrhage).

>Low blood pressure.

>Some medicines (see previous section for medicines that can harm the kidneys).

>Kidney diseases.

>The dye (contrast) that is used for some kinds of scans and X-rays.

What are the symptoms of acute kidney injury (AKI)?

There may be no specific symptoms of AKI. Often you already have symptoms of the illness that has caused AKI.

Symptoms that may happen include:

>Passing less urine than usual.

>Feeling sick or being sick (vomiting).

>Poor appetite.

>Breathlessness.

>Swelling in the legs or other parts of the body.

How is acute kidney injury (AKI) diagnosed?

Your doctor would test for AKI with urine tests and blood tests. Your urine will be measured to see how much you are passing. In most people with AKI, this is less than normal. It will also be tested with a 'dipstick' to check for protein, blood cells and sugar, amongst other things. This will help work out the cause. You will have a blood test for a substance called creatinine. This is an indicator for how well the kidneys are working. Higher levels mean that the kidneys aren't getting rid of waste products as effectively as they should.

You may need an ultrasound scan to look for blockages in the urinary system. Ultrasound scans use sound waves to create a picture of the kidneys and urinary system.

You may also need other tests to try to find the cause for AKI. These might include other blood tests, scans or X-rays.

How is acute kidney injury (AKI) treated?

There isn't a specific medicine to treat AKI. The treatment will depend on the cause of AKI and the severity of the AKI.

The treatment is to carefully look after all the things the kidneys usually do. You will normally be in hospital and have blood and urine tests regularly. You may need extra or special fluid through a drip. You may be on a restricted diet to help get the balance of proteins and salts right. Any medicines which might be harming your kidneys would be stopped. The cause of the problem would be treated if this is possible. (For example, you might need antibiotics for an infection or surgery for any blockage if these were the cause.)

Your doctor will keep a close eye on the balance of minerals and salts in your body. You will have regular tests for potassium, sodium, calcium, sugar (glucose), phosphate and creatinine. You may need treatment with medicines or through a drip if the levels are not right.

Sometimes you need to have dialysis if medicines and fluids aren't working and you are becoming more ill. Dialysis is a procedure where your blood is passed through a machine to remove the waste products (as your kidneys would do if they were working). There are different ways this is done. How often it is done and how long each session lasts will depend on the way it is done. You would be referred to a kidney specialist or an intensive care specialist for this. In most people this can be stopped once the kidneys are working properly again.

These decisions would be made after discussion with you and explaining the options to you (and/or your relatives or carers where appropriate).

What is the outlook (prognosis)?

The outlook varies hugely. It depends on how bad kidney function becomes, who is looking after you, the cause of the problem and how ill you were to begin with.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has produced guidelines to try to cut the numbers of people who develop acute kidney injury (AKI) and who die because of it. The outlook is better if it is picked up earlier.

Many people who recover from AKI have normal kidney function afterwards. However, some go on to develop chronic kidney disease (CKD). Some need to keep having dialysis. If you have had AKI once, you are more likely to have it again in the future.

How can acute kidney injury (AKI) be prevented?

Prevention is certainly better than cure for AKI. Patients in hospital should be tested for AKI regularly. This is done by frequent blood tests and measuring how much urine they produce (and weight for children). People having scans or X-rays with a dye (contrast) should be checked to see how likely they are to develop AKI. If they are at risk, and if the test is really necessary, the chances of AKI are lower if these patients have a drip with extra fluid first. They should be regularly checked after the test.

Medicines which cause kidney damage should be avoided where it is possible. If they can't be avoided, the lowest possible dose should be used and tests done regularly to keep a check on how the kidneys are coping.

Dear Dr. Batmanghelidj,

Every day since I began your wonderful water & salt program, I read and reread your remarkable book "Your Body's Many Cries for Water" and continue to be impressed by the many ways in which your new paradigm brings to light the true etiology of the many diseases that are prevalent.

My excitement is mounting day by day, as I find my energy , clarity, and sense of well-being improving.

After struggling with debilitating chronic fatigue syndrome and acute depression for almost ten years now, I am very grateful for your remarkable insight and for your persistence in bringing this information to the public & scientific community.

I will be ordering a case of your paperbacks to send to friends and relations who are suffering from misdiagnosed illness.

May you live a very long life so that your research can continue and so that your teachings can spread around the world.

With deep appreciation,

D.G., Ph.D.

Stupendous Results #2

I want to write and tell you of my health improvements since following your water treatment.  For the last 10 years I have suffered with chronic heartburn. I have been to many doctors , had numerous tests, even had my gallbladder removed and been prescribed several medications with no relief . I also have had a lifelong problem with depression , have tried many types of therapy and mind-altering drugs , and have been hospitalized. I have been seeing a homeopath , and he has helped me with several situations . he sent me a copy of your article in "The Last Chance Health Report Vol. 3 #5, " and suggested I also purchase your book (entitled) "Your Body's Many Cries for Water." He said he felt this would greatly help me.  At that time, I had just been in the hospital having more tests, and was beginning a program of several strong medications. Some of which had dangerous potential side effects.

On August 24, 1993, I began drinking lots of water, 12 glasses on average and noticed dramatic improvement almost immediately.  The heartburn was still occurring at the same rate, but I drank water and found it took 7 minutes for the heartburn to abate.  I was dubious , to say the least, but decided not to take any medication and see what happened. After a week or so I noticed I had not been depressed either. This to me was amazing , considering all the advice I had been given in psychological counseling.  A few days later, I realized I had not been having headaches as I usually did.  I would have a slight headaches on a daily basis.  I've also noticed my skin is a lot clearer, I have more energy and overall I just feel better.

I have spent untold amounts of money , time away from work ( I had  used all my vacation time being sick) and energy dealing with medical doctors and hospitals , and receiving minimal relief . I am also in a few very stressful situations , but am able to cope.  And I am taking no medication for heartburn or antidepressants. The episodes of heartburn are fewer now as well.  The only change I've made is to drink lots of water.  I have not yet begun the rest of your regimen, orange juice, etc., but intend to do so.

I feel like a different person , more in control of my life.  It's now been two months and my skepticism is no longer there . I believe in your treatment. And want to thank you for it.  I am now telling friends and co-workers to at least try it and have had good reports from them also.

September 13, 1993, I had  follow-up appointment with my gastroenterologist, I told her I was feeling a lot better and gave her a copy of your article to read, she was nonplussed.

I am and have been very angry with the medical profession.  Doctors for the most part do not even ask about your water intake or diet. Their methods ensure you a return appointment with lingering ailments and no education on being able to take care of yourself.  Your treatment is simple, inexpensive, and it works ! It is also a threat to medical doctors as they will see less of you and make less money. What I have been through is outrageous and insulting to my intelligence.

Thank you so much for enlightening me on how I can feel better without all the frustration , pain, and side effects I've experienced.

S.M.
