Letter #3 from Jacob to Aaron

Letter 3 

Bethany 

33rd year of Herod

Dear Aaron,

Wow, you got a wall to stay up! What did Esau say? I bet he was pleased. What are you going to do now with the wall permanent fixture in the village? I don't suppose anyone will say much about the wall being so thick, at least it still stands. Will you end up making it into an entire house? 

I've been looking after the sheep as usual and Dad has let me keep them on the hillside without staying in sight of the older shepherds. You remember I mentioned the guys on camels? Well they never came back but people say that they were seen heading south of Bethlehem into the Wilderness of Judea a instead of going g back to Jerusalem, which seems a bit odd - apparently the king is hopping mad. A few folks apparently went to see the camel guys and talked with them for a while whilst they were visiting someone in Bethlehem. When they came back they said a king had been born but Dad reckons that King Herod's fourth wife is well past it these days - I think he is still on number four, perhaps he has moved onto number five. I lose track of it all so I don't quite understand what they were talking about. Dad says that the palace in Jerusalem is swarming with Romans so perhaps Herod really has another heir. Surely Herod's new kid would only be a prince? Anyway, we've all been told not to talk openly about the camel guys so you'd better not tell anyone that I've told you about them.

The trip to Hebron seems to have only had one effect. Dad has had to find some extra money to pay some new taxes so we have had to sell some of the sheep. Moshe has a smaller flock too so I guess his Dad had to pay extra tax as well. They didn't go to Hebron, seems his Dad was part of the clan which is based in Jericho so they went up there - just as senseless. They still got taxed though.

I got talking to one of the old shepherds, Jehru, a couple of nights back. He said he was over on the burning hillside a year back and he claimed that the fire we saw wasn't Herodium burning but a whole bunch of angels who came and stood among the shepherds. They sang and told the shepherds to go to Bethlehem and apparently they all simply left the sheep and went over there, leaving Jehru to look after everybody's sheep. Poor old fella, I think the sun must have started to affect him. Angels, I ask you, even I know they are just a myth! Anyway he left the following morning singing his heart out and heading off into the desert. Sad isn't it?

 אהרון יקר,

 וואו, יש לך קיר להישאר למעלה! מה אמר עשו? אני בטוח שהוא היה מרוצה. מה אתה הולך לעשות עכשיו עם מתקן הקיר בכפר? אני מניח שאף אחד לא יגיד הרבה על כך שהקיר כל כך עבה, לפחות הוא עדיין עומד. האם בסופו של דבר תהפוך אותו לבית שלם? 

 טיפלתי בכבשים כרגיל, ואבא נתן לי להחזיק אותן על צלע הגבעה מבלי להישאר בטווח ראייה של הרועים המבוגרים. אתה זוכר שהזכרתי את הבחורים על גמלים? ובכן, הם מעולם לא חזרו אבל אנשים אומרים שהם נראו הולכים דרומה מבית לחם אל מדבר יהודה במקום לחזור לירושלים, מה שנראה קצת מוזר - כנראה שהמלך קופץ מטורף. כמה אנשים כנראה הלכו לראות את החבר'ה של הגמלים ודיברו איתם זמן מה בזמן שהם ביקרו מישהו בבית לחם. כשהם חזרו אמרו שמלך נולד אבל אבא מעריך שאשתו הרביעית של המלך הורדוס כבר עברה את זה בימים אלה - אני חושב שהוא עדיין על מספר ארבע, אולי הוא עבר למספר חמש. אני מאבד את הכל כך שאני לא כל כך מבין על מה הם דיברו. אבא אומר שהארמון בירושלים רוחש רומאים אז אולי להורדוס באמת יש יורש אחר. אין ספק שהילד החדש של הורדוס יהיה רק ​​נסיך? בכל מקרה, אמרו לכולנו לא לדבר בגלוי על החבר'ה הגמלים אז עדיף שלא תספר לאף אחד שסיפרתי לך עליהם.

 נראה שלנסיעה לחברון הייתה רק השפעה אחת. אבא נאלץ למצוא קצת כסף נוסף כדי לשלם מסים חדשים אז נאלצנו למכור חלק מהכבשים. גם למשה יש להקה קטנה יותר אז אני מניח שגם אבא שלו נאלץ לשלם מס נוסף. הם לא הלכו לחברון, נראה שאבא שלו היה חלק מהחמולה שבסיסה ביריחו אז הם עלו לשם - חסר טעם באותה מידה. הם עדיין קיבלו מס.

 דיברתי עם אחד הרועים הזקנים, ג'הרו, לפני כמה לילות. הוא אמר שהוא היה על צלע הגבעה הבוערת לפני שנה והוא טען שהאש שראינו לא הייתה הרודיון בוער אלא חבורה שלמה של מלאכים שבאו ועמדו בין הרועים. הם שרו ואמרו לרועים ללכת לבית לחם, וכנראה שכולם פשוט עזבו את הכבשים והלכו לשם, והשאירו את יהרו לשמור על הכבשים של כולם. בחור מסכן, אני חושב שהשמש התחילה להשפיע עליו. מלאכים, אני שואל אתכם, אפילו אני יודע שהם רק מיתוס! בכל מקרה הוא עזב למחרת בבוקר שר לבו ויצא אל המדבר. עצוב לא?
