Japanese Live Longer

10 Reasons Why The Japanese Live Longer Than Any Other People On Earth

It’s no secret that the people of the land of the rising sun tend to outlive pretty much everyone else. For years, people in the West have been looking at the Japanese and scratching their heads, witnessing as Japan rose from having one of the lowest life expectancies post-WWII, to topping the charts globally.

What gives? Although there are no definite answers, years of scientific research and anecdotal evidence have revealed some answers — and tips for the rest of us.

#1. They eat a lot of vegetables.

Traditionally, the Japanese eat lots of rice, veg and fish — generally in that order — and Japan’s infatuation with fermented soy and seaweed means they have no lack of vitamins, minerals, and beneficial phytochemicals.
Unfortunately, from the 19th century onward, there has been an increase in unhealthy Western habits — breaded and battered meats and more recently, white bread, refined sugars, and copious amounts of sweets.

#2. They cook their food differently.

Hoshino Resorts
Tempura, tonkatsu and croquettes notwithstanding, Japanese food involves a lot of steaming, pan-grilling, broiling, stir-frying, slow-cooking, and fermenting. They also have a habit of making at least one bowl of soup and usually they prepare small dishes. It helps when they couple their veg and fish intake with lots of fiber from beans, rice, and often beans and rice.

#3. They drink a lot of tea.

Love and Will
While coffee isn’t necessarily bad, there’s a huge tea drinking culture in Japan — and good quality Japanese tea contains far more antioxidants than coffee. This is especially true for Japan’s tea-time specialty: matcha, which is a fine (and often expensive) powdered tea made of young leaves grown specifically to increase their chlorophyll and antioxidant content by depriving them of sunlight.

#4. Their food is fresh.

Isshou Genki
It’s seriously, seriously fresh. And seasonal. Being a relatively small archipelago with a large amount of arable land, there isn’t much need for food to travel very far before it enters people’s mouths, and that can be said for Japan’s veg as much as it can be said for its fish and grain. In Japanese markets, food isn’t dated by the day — it’s dated by the half-hour according to Naomi Moriyama, who wrote a book entitled: Japanese Women Don’t Get Old or Fat.

#5. They’ve got smaller plates.

The Everyday Minimalist
Portion control is a traditional part of Japanese cuisine. Etiquette is a huge part of Japanese living, and part of that is the careful use of chopsticks, the practice of eating from a small plate or rice bowl, only garnishing food lightly, serving each item on its own little dish, never completely filling a plate or serving large portions.
In Okinawa, the locals attribute part of their longevity to the saying: hara hachi bu, meaning “eat until you are 80% full”.

#6. They walk, stand, and squat more.

Travel Japan Blog
Part of daily Japanese life is the great commute — getting up, heading to the station, waiting for the train, standing in the train, walking from the next station to work, and getting on with life. Public transport is the norm in Japan. People jump on bikes and hop on trains — a car is considered a luxury. Many employees, such as those at Canon, work standing up.
Even going to the bathroom is different in Japan. While there are a lot of Western-style toilets available, old-school Japanese lavatories involve squatting, which is healthier for the bowels.

#7. They’ve got morning exercise — on the radio.

Flickr
Called rajio taiso, Japan literally has on-the-air exercise routines that are completed in massive groups every morning. The majority of Japanese partake, and there are several degrees of difficulty for different people. Originally a (now defunct) MetLife, Inc. product straight out of Massachusetts, visiting Japanese employees of the Ministry of Communications and Transportation brought radio calisthenics to Japan in the 1920s.
The benefits are obvious — an increased level of athleticism, alertness and energy, alongside better flexibility and focus at the workplace and in school.

#8. They’ve got universal healthcare.

MetropolisJapan
Since the 1960s, Japan has had a mandatory healthcare system that gobbles up only 8% of the GDP (less than half of what America pays for its current system) while keeping people very much healthy. The average Japanese person visits their doctor over a dozen times a year for check-ups, four times as much as in the States.

#9. They spend more time outside.

Nozawa Holidays
In addition to walking practically everywhere, it’s a Japanese custom to eat out with friends rather than invite them in. Japanese living spaces are modest, while restaurant prices are relatively cheap — so socializing outside is a regular occurrence. While the effect of hanging out with people hasn’t been tested on Japanese longevity, social coherence and friendships are important for emotional health.

#10. They focus on cleanliness.

Gay Travel Herald
The Japanese are obsessed with cleanliness, and it’s for the better. Their cultural methods are largely based on the centuries-old traditions of Shintoism, a large part of which is the concept of purification. In Japan, it’s not uncommon to bathe twice a day in the summer. Communal baths are a regular thing, and the guidelines and rules within them are strict.

Professor Kenji Shibuya of Tokyo University published a paper two years ago which suggested three reasons for Japanese longevity. "First, Japanese people give attention to hygiene in all aspects of their daily life," he wrote. "This attitude might partly be attributable to a complex interaction of culture, education, climate, environment and the Shinto tradition of purifying the body and mind before meeting others.

Second, they are health conscious.

In Japan regular check-ups are the norm. Mass screening is provided for everyone at school and work or in the community by local government authorities. Third, Japanese food has a balanced nutritional benefit and the diet of the population has improved in tandem with economic development."

Could there also be a genetic component? We often talk informally about old age running in families and there is scientific back-up for the notion. A common scientific theory is that about a third of human lifespan may be heritable.

Researchers are particularly interested in this in Okinawa, the chain of subtropical islands in an arc between Japan and Taiwan whose residents enjoy the highest life expectancy on the planet. When population researchers started looking at centenarians and other elderly islanders in 1975 they found an unusual number of them to be in extraordinarily healthy shape. They were lean, youthful looking, energetic and had remarkably low rates of heart disease and cancer.

"It's an everyday occurrence in Okinawa to find energetic greatgrandparents living in their own homes, tending their own gardens and at weekends being visited by grandchildren who in the West would qualify for pensions," according to John Robbins, author of Still Healthy At 100. "The word 'retirement' does not exist in the traditional Okinawan dialect."

THE Okinawa Centenarian Study was the first research group to identify human longevity genes when it published a study showing that centenarians on the islands have genetic polymorphisms that place them at lower risk for inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. It also found siblings of Okinawan centenarians were more likely to live longer.

"Does this mean that Okinawan longevity is all genetic? Not at all," says the group's website. "We believe the Okinawans have both genetic and non-genetic longevity advantages - the best combination. The Okinawan traditional way of life - the dietary habits, the physical activity, the psychological and social aspects - all play an important role in Okinawan longevity."

Back in Kyoto on the mainland the late Jiroemon Kimura put his long life down to waking early, eating small amounts (his favourite breakfast was rice porridge and miso soup), reading the newspaper and watching parliamentary debates on TV. But genetics may also have played a part: four of his siblings lived beyond 90 and his youngest brother reached 100.

Meanwhile his successor as the world's oldest person - Misao Okawa, from Japan's third city Osaka - is a spring chicken at 115.

late, record breaker, Jiroemon Kimura

This week saw the death of the world's oldest person and the oldest man in recorded history. It may not be a surprise that 116-year-old Jiroemon Kimura was Japanese. He too reportedly helped his son on the family farm until the age of 90.

For most of the past 25 years Japanese women have enjoyed the longest life expectancy in the world, peaking at an average of 86.3 years in 2010. That compares with 82.3 years for women in the UK. The figure slipped back to 85.9 years in 2011, putting the country behind Hong Kong for the first time, which experts attributed to the loss of life in the tsunami of March 2011.

Even though Japanese men have a lower life expectancy (currently 79.4 years compared with 78.2 years for British men), the country has proportionally far more longer-lived people of both genders than we do. Japan, which has twice the population of Britain, has four times more people aged 100 or more than us (about 51,000 of them according to the health ministry in Tokyo).

The secret of that longevity is a traditional diet of fish, rice and simmered vegetables, easy access to healthcare and a comparatively high standard of living in old age.

"But on balance and compared to the rest of the world an extraordinary number of Japanese live a very healthy lifestyle in large part because of what they eat," says Moriyama, pointing out that retail giant Wal-Mart invested in Japanese supermarket chain Seiyu so it could learn Japan's secrets of food distribution and freshness. Staples of the national diet include tofu, a curd made from soya beans that is free from cholesterol, low in calories and very high in protein; shiitake mushrooms, which have been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years and have been shown to boost the immune system and lower cholesterol; and seaweed, which contains a compound that helps burn fatty tissue.

Moriyama says there is far too much salt in the Japanese diet, in foods such as salted dried fish, pickled vegetables and soy sauce. Japanese men also smoke at an alarmingly high rate (about one in three compared with one in five British men) and alcohol-related ailments are also high. But obesity is the lowest in the developing world because of a culture of small portions - there is a Japanese saying "eat until you're only 80 per cent full".

Guided Meditation

Guided Meditation for Happiness*

Welcome to this meditation on cultivating more happiness.

Before you begin, it’s good to wear comfortable, loose clothing.

You can lie down or sit comfortably, you can sit in a chair or cross your legs with your hands resting one over the other in standard meditation pose.

If at any time you feel uncomfortable, stop the recording.

Now, close your eyes. Begin to listen to the sounds of the music.

During this time, know that you are allowed to release yourself from the tasks of the day and the responsibilities you have – just for a little while. Let yourself be free to explore, smile, and experience bliss.

Bring your focus to your breathing.

Feel your breaths grow longer and deeper.

Take a few moments to breathe in and out, letting yourself leave the outside world behind.

In your mind’s eye, imagine a path. It can be any type of path you choose, but at the end of it, you see a door. This door opens to your inner world.

As you push the door open, you see a ray of light. It is warm and inviting, allowing you to relax.

This is your inner world. Step into this beautiful world.
Relax into the warmth and harmony.

Only you know about this place.

Take a deep breath. Close the door to the outer world. Let yourself fully engage into this inner world. A world where you are safe and can experience happiness.

Allow yourself this special time to work on your levels of happiness so that you may spread joy within yourself and eventually radiate it out.

It’s okay if your mind wanders. When you realize you have gone on a thought tangent, it’s all right.

As you are able, bring your awareness back to this meditation. To the sound of my voice.

Now, take a deep breath.

Feel your toes and feet begin to relax.

Feel your legs relax.

Feel your thigh muscles loosen, followed by the muscles in your abdomen.

Gently tell them to relax.

Moving up your chest, relax the muscles around your ribcage, and release the muscles around your back.

Feel the muscles in your shoulders releasing tension.

Now, let the muscles in your neck relax, followed by all the muscles surrounding  your head.

Take another deep breath. Let the air gently fill your lungs.

Breathe out, allowing yourself to exhale until no more air is in your lungs.

Breathe in again. Feel your lungs expand.

And breathe out.

Breathe in through your nose for a count of four: 1…2…3…4…

Hold.

Breathe out through your lips for a count of eight: 1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8

Breathe in: 1…2…3…4…

Breathe out: 1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8

Imagine the path you were on when you entered your Inner World. Continue on that same path. You are surrounded by the same golden light that you first saw.

The path upon which you are walking is well marked in a rich alpine forest. White pine trees line the path.

The morning sun shines brightly above you, casting golden rays of light all around you.

You walk until you find a rock outcropping overlooking a mountain vista. Hundreds of peaks span the horizon. Some are near, and some are farther away.

As you gaze at the expanse of mountains, a feeling of peace comes over you. Nature’s beauty is so precious and she gives us this gift so freely.

You take in this beauty. And you allow yourself to smile: to smile at the jeweled blue and green mountain peaks.

The golden rays illuminate the landscape, and gently mix light and color so that the view looks like a painting.

Smile as you become aware of the wonderful plants and animals around you. The sound of birds singing their morning song reaches your ears.

You notice a large tree near you. It is old, as the girth of its trunk is very large.

The papery bark tells you that it’s a sweet birch tree. The leaves smell of sweet wintergreen.

A few leaves fly away from the tree in a warm, gentle wind.
One lands in your hand and you smile as the leaf gives off the its minty scent in your palm.

You smile at this marvel and take a deep breath.

There’s something else. Besides the glorious aroma, the leaves start to make beautiful sounds – like a beautiful stringed dulcimer – as they flutter in the mild wind.

Light, airy sounds.

Sounds that have a beautiful, melodious tone that compliment the golden rays of light all around you.

Now you’re surrounded by golden light and glorious sounds.

As you listen to the music, you feel your heart lifted and full of joy: there’s such beauty all around you, making your senses dance in euphoria.

Next to the tree is a bush with emerald leaves ending in triangular points.

At the base of the leaves are small berries that resemble raspberries, but they are lighter red in color and smaller. They are wine berries growing in abundance all over the bush.

You pick a few and eat three at once.

The sweet tangy flavor makes your mouth water!

You close your eyes and savor the flavor.

As you chew and swallow these delicious fruits, you feel a warmth and energy emanate from your core. Life-giving energy rises within you and makes its way out through your head, arms, core, and legs.

You feel this energy as a life-force that grows stronger with each beat of your heart.

All your senses are in ecstasy.

You feel a sense of calm appreciation for this beautiful bounty you’re able to experience.

You look out toward the berry bush and poplar tree, and then back out to the landscape.

The sun is even higher in the sky now, and you can make out beautiful flowers dotting the landscape in pastels. Splashes of crimson and gold also speck the landscape.

More scents come to your nose: honeysuckle, rosehips, lilac.

The bliss you feel at nature’s richness radiates within your body.

This powerful energy continues to radiate out of your core, out of your head, and out of your feet, casting more light all around you.

You look up and see a golden aura of energy surrounding your body.

It’s pure energy and light, and you can’t help but smile.

You bask in this life force energy combined with the sunlight and feel every muscle, every cell, every part of your being infused with nature’s happiness.

You stay here for a few moments, just listening to the sounds of the music, smiling, taking it all in.

Now that you are infused with this golden energy all over your body, you are ready to leave this inner world.

It has infused you with the tools you need to return to your day with bliss, more energy, and more happiness.

The beautiful vista looks more golden through your aura of energy. You feel strong and vibrant.

The smile on your face grows wider and a sense of gratitude comes over you for having the chance to visit this special place.

You turn to go, but the beautiful sound of the leaves keeps you still for one moment longer.

The notes beckon you to stay strong, and to radiate your beautiful golden energy out to the world.

Once more you take a deep breath in and breathe out in tandem with the music. Once more you encounter the scent of sweet mint.

Slowly, you start to walk back up the path. You see an eagle flying in the distance. Its wings span a great length and it stares at you. As a final gift, it sends you more energy and light to soar in your outer world.

You continue to walk back up the path. The music from the leaves still plays as you approach the door. Slowly you pull it open and continue on the path to the outer world.

You arrive and stop for a moment to take a deep breath.

You hear the music from the leaves fading out as you return to your outer world.

You breathe in, slowly and deeply.

Then you breathe out slowly, deeply.

Breath in and hold for 1…2…3…4…

Now breathe out and hold for 1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8

Take one more deep breath in through your nose, and out through your mouth.

Slowly open your eyes and feel the energy of your inner world shining through and the golden energy that surrounded you is still there, radiating from your core.

Smile and take one more deep breath as you return to your day.

International Day of the Girl

On 11 October 2018, girls once again took over the roles of leaders and influencers in a global display of their power and potential.

Across the world, girls stepped into the shoes of presidents, mayors, head teachers, business leaders and more to show that girls should be free to dream and free to lead.

The global action on International Day of the Girl is a call for a social and political revolution to tear down the barriers that continue to hold girls back. When girls have equal opportunities, they can transform their lives and communities.
Without this, gender equality is impossible. Current efforts are too small and disjointed to achieve lasting impact. In addition, our research reveals that girls still face discrimination and violence despite laws, policies and global targets put into place to advance change.
#GirlsTakeover is an initial step on a long road to change but it also shows that the girls’ rights movement is gaining momentum.

What happened this year?

  • 1000 takeovers organised and run directly by Plan International offices
  • 60 countries taking part in Plan International's #GirlsTakeover action
  • #GirlsTakeover CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, Vice President of Uganda, National Assembly of Ecuador, Parliament of Senegal and many more! Take a look at some of the highlights:

Global Girls' Summit 2018

This year, the Global Girls’ Summit was held on 10 October in Brussels, the global hub for 2018's #GirlsTakeover action. It was the second in a series of annual summits supporting girls’ leadership after last year’s event in Paris.

The event brought together the world’s leading minds in business, government, entrepreneurship, science, sport, arts and media to celebrate the power of girls and call for increased action to support girls’ activism and leadership.

It also saw the launch of the brand new, girl-led, global campaign for gender equality:
Girls Get Equal

Get involved

You can find a wealth of videos, pictures and graphics in our social media toolkit to share with family and friends on your social media channels far beyond day of the girl!

You could also visit the Girls Get Equal site to found out how to be an everyday ally to girls and young women.

History of the Day of the Girl
International Day of the Girl
Girls march through Uganda to mark the International Day of the Girl

11 October has been a key global moment to celebrate the power of girls and highlight the barriers they face since the United Nations adopted it as International Day of the Girl in December 2011.

While there has long been an International Women's Day and an International Day of the Child, neither of these days recognise the unique position of girls who are discriminated against simply for being young and female.

We led the global effort to build a coalition of support behind the Day of the Girl, securing support from the Canadian government which took our call all the way to the United Nations.

We worked with girls who believed that an international day could be a launch pad for global action on girls’ rights. Through their stories, ideas and views it was clear that an international day for girls would bring global focus to their lack of representation in the global development agenda.

A World Without Black People : Black Power and Black Beauty

This is a story of a little boy name Theo, who woke up one morning and asked his mother, "Mom, what if there were no Black people in the world?" Well, his mother thought about that for a moment, and then said, "Son, follow me around today and let's just see what it would be like if there were no Black people in the world." Mom said, "Now go get dressed, and we will get started."

Theo ran to his room to put on his clothes and shoes. His mother took one look at him and said, "Theo, where are your shoes? And those clothes are all wrinkled, son. I must iron them." However, when she reached for the ironing board, it was no longer there.   You see Sarah Boone, a black woman, invented the ironing board (click here), and Jan E. Matzelinger, a black man, invented the shoe lasting machine (click here).   "Oh well," she said, "please go and do something to your hair." Theo ran in his room to comb his hair, but the comb was not there. You see, Walter Sammons, a black man, invented the comb. Theo decided to just brush his hair, but the brush was gone. You see Lydia O. Newman, a black female, invented the brush.   Well, this was a sight: no shoes, wrinkled clothes, hair a mess. Even Mom's hair, without the hair care inventions of Madam C. Walker, well, you get the picture.   Mom told Theo, "Let's do our chores around the house and then take a trip to the grocery store." Theo's job was to sweep the floor. He swept and swept and swept. When he reached for the dustpan, it was not there. You see, Lloyd P. Ray, a black man, invented the dustpan.   So he swept his pile of dirt over in the corner and left it there. He then decided to mop the floor, but the mop was gone. You see, Thomas W. Stewart, a black man, invented the mop. Theo yelled to his Mom, "Mom,

I'm not having any luck." "Well, son," she said, "Let me finish washing these clothes, and we will prepare a list for the grocery store." When the wash finished, she went to place the clothes in the dryer, but it was not there. You see, George T. Samon, a black man, invented the clothes dryer.   Mom asked Theo to go get a pencil and some paper to prepare their list for the market. So, Theo ran for the paper and pencil but noticed the pencil lead was broken. Well, he was out of luck because John Love, a black man, invented the pencil sharpener.   Mom reached for a pen, but it was not there because William Purvis, a black man, invented the fountain pen.   As a matter of fact, Lee Burridge invented the typewriting machine and W. A. Lovette the advanced printing press. Theo and his mother decided just to head out to the market.   Well, when Theo opened the door, he noticed the grass was as high as he was tall. You see, John Burr, a black man, invented the lawn mower. They made their way over to the car and found that it just wouldn't go. You see, Richard Spikes, a black man, invented the automatic gearshift, and Joseph Gammel invented the supercharge system for internal combustion engines. They also noticed that the few cars that were moving were running into each other and having wrecks because there were no traffic signals. You see, Garrett A. Morgan, a black man invented the traffic light. Well, it was getting late, so they walked to the market, got their groceries, and returned home. Just when they were about to put away the milk, eggs, and butter, they noticed the refrigerator was gone. You see John Standard, a black man, invented the refrigerator. So, they just left the food on the counter.   By this time, Theo noticed he was getting mighty cold. Mom went to turn up the heat, and what do you know? Alice Parker, a black female, invented the heating furnace. Even in the summertime, they would have been out of luck because Frederick Jones, a black man, invented the air conditioner. It was almost time for Theo's father to arrive home. He usually takes the bus, but there was no bus, because its precursor was the electric trolley, invented by another black man, Elbert R. Robinson.

He usually takes the elevator from his office on the 20th floor, but there was no elevator because Alexander Miles, a black man, invented the elevator.   He also usually dropped off the office mail at a near by mailbox, but it was no longer there because Philip Downing, a black man, invented the letter drop mailbox, and William Barry invented the postmarking and canceling machine. Theo and his mother sat at the kitchen table with their heads in their hands. When the father arrived, he asked, "Why are you sitting in the dark?" Why? Because Lewis Howard Latimer, a black man, invented the filament within the light bulb. Theo quickly learned more about what it would be like if there were no black people in the world, especially if he were ever sick and needed blood. Dr. Charles Drew, a black scientist, found a way to preserve and store blood, which led to his starting the world's first blood bank. Well, what if a family member had to have heart surgery? This would not have been possible without Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, a black doctor, who performed the first open-heart surgery.
So, if you ever wonder, like Theo, where would we be without black people? Well, it's pretty plain to see. We would still be in the DARK!

Singapore: new haven for the rich

Singapore: new haven for the rich

Singapore has seen its image get a glamorous makeover in recent years, leading it to become a destination for the world's ultra rich.

Asia set to house world's super-rich

The rich are getting richer - and more of the world's top earners will be coming from Asia, a survey has found.

What I learnt about inequality after spending time with some of the richest people in the world

Wealth has dehumanised them, and there's nothing they can do about it.

So what are the super-rich: are they bastards? Are they, as Hemingway put it, just like us, but with "more money”? Are they going to save us? Destroy us? Are they corporate psychopaths who've channelled their murderous impulses into making money, not serial killing? Or are they lonely and needing love, but trapped in a gilded cage of Bentleys and Lear Jets?
No, none of the above. I spent 6 months with them for a show I made for the BBC, called The Super-Rich and Us. I travelled to various castles and penthouses all over the world. I was greeted by sportswear multi-millionaire Sir Tom Hunter in his vast manicured grounds with “Hello! My favourite champagne Socialist!” (a little more champagne and less socialist, thanks very much).
I went to The Dorchester to meet Wang Jianlin, China's richest man, who pretends he doesn't understand English when he's bored. He was off to see someone called Boris after me, who wants to flog him half of London, and then some bloke called David, who runs the country. That's what happens when you're worth a modest $21.4bn.

So what did I learn from spending so much time with the super-wealthy? They're fast becoming a breed apart. And this isn't a lazy use of the term "breed apart" - it's both biologically and psychologically accurate. It's their self-willed destiny.
The super-rich believe that they're Masters Of The Universe, and the facts seem to bear them out. They hold power in that quiet understated way Sun Tzu defined as “the one who doesn't speak in a room. He's the one who holds all the cards”.

This gives them something they can't help: an intolerance for weakness. Even the most self-avowed Bill Gatesian liberal and philanthropic billionaire, paying for libraries and vaccine programs in Africa, can't quite comprehend why everyone on Earth isn't as determined to be as successful as they are. If they're not - goddamn it, I'm going to show them how.

This go-getting, sink or swim mantra of the super-rich is accepted by the Government. It's even taught in schools. But not everyone can be an entrepreneur – it's the reason people across Europe have been marching. They're not just protesting against austerity, but also reaffirming their humanity. In Athens they chanted "we are human", as if the troika and super-rich actually needed reminding.
What began as a global tribe simply making money has transmuted into biological difference. The rich now live in their own Elysium-style biosphere. It's a floating bubble high above Earth, connecting London to New York to Shanghai to Dubai via a chrome Business Class tube in the sky.

Whether they're in their private jets, helicopters, or penthouse suites, they occupy a space that mere mortals like us can only squint at from street level. Their separation makes it easier for them to accept the inequality of which they're a part - and puts them literally out of reach.

In this biosphere, they eat better food, go to better schools, wear better clothes, take better medicine, and thus breed a cleaner, richer tribe. They even breathe cleaner air. Several billionaires have their own mobile air supplies, which are pumped into whatever home they've decided to stay at. If you have a property in Shanghai, for example, being super-wealthy allows you to avoid having the same smog-filled lungs as the rest of the city’s 14m inhabitants.
If you visit this Elysium, as I did, you'll realise that inequality is not about money, but an idea of wealth-engineered eugenics. In their minds, they are not only richer than the rest of us, but also “better”.

And the word “better” is important, because the fallacy of moral improvement that comes with money has been used to justify inequality. The rich sincerely believe it, and they want us to sincerely believe it too, and guess what? We do. If we don't achieve the unachievable, we've failed. It's a rigged game.

The rich aren't evil, though. They're avatars for inequality, but with a shred of humanity inside of them – a ghost in the machine – that wants to reconnect with the rest of society.
I asked multi-millionaire Tony Fernandes what he was doing after I interviewed him. “Making beans on toast for the kids”. He is so rich, he's come out the other side, and eschews the trappings of luxury for ersatz reality.

But then I spoke to the Phones 4 U billionaire, John Caudwell, who showed me his plans for a giant subterranean Bat Cave he wants to build — it was empty, apart from one tiny gold-plated figure at the centre. “That's me,” he said. And do you know what? I felt sorry for him. A bit.

No matter how hard they try, the super-rich live in a hermetically enclosed bubble. Seeing the way they lived made me think of an Ebola patient in a highly pampered quarantine, staring at the outside world. They feel like they should be part of it, but spend their lives unconvincingly parodying the things ordinary people do. Their wealth has made them suspicious and distant. It has dehumanised them, and there's nothing they can do about it.

That is their tragedy. But it's not quite on a par with the tragedy of a mum juggling eight jobs on zero hours contracts. So boo hoo, you might say.

We should pity their separation from the 99 per cent. But not too much - when the next crash happens, let's not use quantitative easing and the bail-out to super-charge inequality further. Pity democracy, pity people, but don't pity those with too much money.

Lived with a billionaire once ( lite, he was only worth 2b poor chap.) and discovered that his overall life style was no different to mine in almost every way. Sure he owned multiple Ferraris and had a private jet and Yacht ( seldom used ) but in the every day his car was similar to my car . His clothes ( all ) were similar to mine and so too the food he ate or the restaurants he went to while. He made big deals and feared his competitors and that he would lose large amounts . I made deals and feared I would lose small amounts . He was in terrible physical shape where I was and am in great shape. The point is that in a democracy despite the great differences in bank balance your actual life style is incredibly similar from the underpants you wear to the food you eat. He is hitting the glass ceiling but I can see the ceiling even though I have no chance ( or want to ) ever get near to it .

Poverty in Singapore reached worst ever, jumped 43.45% in 3 years

April 22, 2017

In the latest statistics provided by the Ministry of Social and Family Affairs (MSF), families living in poverty and relying on ComCare assistance jumped 43.45% in the three years between 2012 and 2015, from 20,572 families to 29,511 families. No statistic was given for 2016, but this is the worst poverty result ever officially reported in Singapore.

Elderly above the age of 60 are the most afflicted with a 74.32% jump. This is largely due to the low interest rate and new government restrictions on withdrawal of CPF retirement money.

Graphic from Straits Times

Poverty among younger Singaporeans – aged between 15 and 34 – has also worsened with 41,500 earning below S$1,000 a month as of June 2016. Unemployment rate is 5% for Singaporeans under the age of 30, double that of other age group according to the Ministry of Manpower.

Despite growing poverty, the Singapore ruling party government enjoy higher popularity ratings among Singaporeans. The country’s most recent general elections saw the ruling party winning with a 69.9% majority. There is no Minimum Wage and low income jobs, except for construction workers and domestic helpers, are largely taken by Singaporeans. Well-paid PMET jobs are taken up foreign degree holders, many of whom are fresh graduates from India and China.

Facts About Poverty in Singapore

  1. Poverty in Singapore suffers from a lack of visibility Singapore is one of the wealthiest and most well-developed countries in the world, and this is often the side that is seen and thought of. This makes Singapore’s poverty difficult to see for anyone not living in the country.
  2. Singapore has a large inequality gap Singapore has the most millionaires in the world, but also has one of the largest inequality gaps in advanced Asian countries, placing second on the list.
  3. 10 to 14 percent of Singaporeans face severe poverty Ten to 14 percent of Singaporeans struggle with severe financial issues. These Singaporeans have difficulty affording their basic needs, with hunger being one of the largest factors.
  4. Poverty is an increasing problem in Singapore Poverty in Singapore is growing worse with each year. From 2012 to 2015, impoverished families relying on government assistance increased by approximately 43 percent.
  5. Poverty is an issue for the elderly Elderly Singaporeans are the group most affected by poverty. In the same timeframe of 2012 to 2015, the number of impoverished people over 60 years of age relying on government assistance increased by approximately 74 percent. This is mainly attributed to government restrictions on withdrawing retirement funds.
  6. Poverty is also an issue for the young Singaporeans between the ages of 15 and 34 years of age are the second most affected group. This is mainly caused by low-paying entry-level jobs and a lack of minimum wage laws. In addition, many young Singaporeans struggle to find a job at all, with approximately 5 percent being unemployed.
  7. Many people are trapped in poverty Singaporeans born into poverty, especially those from more recent generations, are more likely to stay in poverty even as adults. Those born into more financially well-off families tend to have more success.
  8. Government assistance is not enough The government provides financial aid to any family making less than $1,900 a month. The government also provides aid in other forms such as making education more affordable, tax exemptions for impoverished families and more affordable housing. Yet, impoverished families continue to struggle, and assistance does not seem to be alleviating the growing issue of poverty in the country.
  9. As poverty grows, so does the popularity of the ruling party Although the issue of poverty in Singapore is worsening at a steady rate, the ruling party in the country is growing in popularity and continuing to win general elections. Many believe that the current party is not doing enough to address the issue.
  10. Singapore receives little foreign aid Foreign aid for Singapore has dropped significantly since the mid-1990s, and it receives only miniscule amounts from countries like the U.S. compared to what others are receiving. Even then, the majority of foreign aid that goes to Singapore does not focus directly on poverty issues, and instead on the country’s trade and economy. This lack of aid may be partially due to how hidden much of the poverty in Singapore seems to be.

  1. Although a growing problem, poverty in Singapore remains in the background of the country’s financial successes and development. Because the issue often goes unnoticed by other countries, little aid is being provided, allowing poverty to grow and spread, affecting a variety of Singaporeans in many ways.

you need to know about Ponzi scams

Nearly one million investors may have been fleeced in China's latest Ponzi scheme, which over the weekend saw 21 executives from its biggest peer-to-peer money lending platform being arrested on suspicion of stealing 50 billion yuan (S$10.8 billion).

The police allege that the senior management of Ezubao had stolen that much money from 900,000 investors nationwide, which would make it China's largest-ever case of investor fraud, by both cash value and the number of victims.

By number of victims, it would be the largest Ponzi scheme in the world.

Here's what you need to know about Ponzi scams:

What is a Ponzi scheme?

A fraudulent investment scam promising high rates of return with little risk to investors. The Ponzi scheme generates returns for older investors by using the cash from new investors. Such scams actually yield the promised returns to earlier investors, as long as there are more new investors.
But they eventually collapse on themselves when the new investments slow or stop.

Who is the scheme named after?

One Charles Ponzi, a clerk in Boston, who did not invent the scheme that came to bear his name, but whose scam fooled so many people and made him so much money that it brought the such a scheme into the national spotlight for the first time.
In 1919, the Italian immigrant duped thousands of investors, promising them a whopping 50 per cent return in 45 days, or 100 per cent in 90 days on international postal coupons, which he never actually purchased. The international reply coupons from other countries were supposed to be redeemable in the US for postage stamps, with the profit coming from the difference in prices between countries.
A steady flow of new investors initially allowed Ponzi to pay existing investors, while pocketing millions of dollars himself.
But soon enough, the scheme began to raise eyebrows because there were not sufficient international reply coupons for his investment plan to work. It collapsed, bringing six banks down with it. Collectively, his investors lost an estimated US$20 million - equal to US$222 million (S$416 million) in today's money.
Ponzi went to prison for several years but after his release, he launched another scheme where he sold real estate that was literally underwater. He was jailed yet again and ultimately died penniless in Brazil, working as a translator.

Is a Ponzi scheme the same as a pyramid scheme?

They are similar in that both are based on using money from new investors to pay the earlier ones.
But there is one important difference: In a Ponzi scheme, the mastermind gathers all the money from new investors and then distributes them. Pyramid schemes, on the other hand, allow each investor to directly benefit depending on how many new investors are recruited. The person at the top of the pyramid does not at any point have access to all the money in the scheme. Pyramid schemes are illegal in most but not all countries.
For both schemes, however, eventually there is not enough money to go around and the schemes unravel.

What is the biggest Ponzi scheme ever?

There have been many famous Ponzi conmen throughout history, especially in recent years. But the biggest schemer by far was Bernie Madoff.
Madoff stole US$65 billion from thousands of investors from the ordinary to the ultra-rich and famous. A respected former chairman of the Nasdaq stock market, Madoff started his Ponzi scheme in 1986 under the guise of a successful hedge fund - and ran it successfully for 23 years.
But the global financial crisis led to his undoing. In 2009, Madoff received redemption requests worth US$7 billion, which he was unable to meet. He confided his problems to his two sons, who reported him to the authorities.
Madoff is currently serving a 150-year prison sentence. One son hanged himself in 2010 on the two-year anniversary of his discovery of the fraud; the other died in 2014, blaming his cancer relapse on the stress and shame he suffered from his father's massive scam.

China police bust massive S$10.8b Ponzi scheme with over 900,000 investors.
SHANGHAI - Authorities in China have busted what may well be the country's biggest illegal fund-raising case in terms of money and the number of investors, according to media reports on Monday (Feb 1).
Police arrested 21 people involved in the operation of peer-to-peer (P2P) lender Ezubao, the official Xinhua news agency said on Monday, over an online scam it said took in some 50 billion yuan (S$10.8 billion) from about 900,000 mainland investors.
Ezubao was a Ponzi scheme, the Xinhua report said, and more than 95 per cent of the projects on the online financing platform were fake.

Among those arrested was the scheme's alleged high-flying mastermind - Ding Ning, chairman of Yucheng Group, which launched Ezubao in July 2014.
The suspects are accused of luring in investors with false offers of double-digit annual returns.
Mr Ding, 34, financed his lavish lifestyle with money fleeced from investors, the South China Morning Post reported on Monday.
It said Ezubao was launched in July 2014 and embarked on a massive advertising campaign to raise funds.

On the surface, it was a P2P website with various projects, offering investors annual returns ranging between 9 per cent and 14.6 per cent. But in reality, the website's operators made up most of the projects listed on its website and used funds from new investors to pay old debts, Xinhua reported.

Chinese police said they had sealed, frozen and seized the assets of Ezubao and its linked companies.

The Ezubao case underscores the risks created by China's fast-growing US$2.6-trillion wealth management product industry, said Reuters. Many products are sold through loosely regulated channels, including online financial investment platforms and privately run exchanges.

THE HEALING WONDERS OF THE GOD’S CROWN

THE HEALING WONDERS OF THE GOD’S CROWN

Last time I told you about the other magic drink I brought from Indonesia, Sambiloto. Now I will give another secret to you about another drink of “miracle” from Indonesia that is known as The God’s Crown or The Crown of God, which is widely recognized in Indonesian language as Mahkota Dewa.

For you who want to live a healthy life or cure some diseases, this could be another effective traditional herbal drink for you to drink regularly. But first, I have to be honest that it doesn’t taste good. It’s quite bitter even if it’s not as much bitter as the king of bitter, Sambiloto; but still, it really is for you who aren’t used to bitter herbal drinks.

However, even if it’s not one of the most delicious drinks available, the healing benefits cannot be doubted. Like some other traditional herbal drinks that many people would avoid for the bitter taste, The God’s Crown or Mahkota Dewa provides you the health benefits that you can never imagine, such as:

1. Preventing and healing two of the diseases you fear the most, Tumor and Cancer.

 2. Neutralizing the body toxins.

 3. Killing any bacteria, virus and fungal in your body.

 4. Curing diarrhea problem.

 5. Helping your diet by reducing body weight and making your skin smooth as it contains antioxidants.

 6. Preventing and healing the cardiovascular diseases and strokes.

 7. Reducing high blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar level.

 8. Healing uric acid and rheumatic.

 9. Ensuring perfect blood circulation and making sure everything works well.

 10. Improving the stamina of our body.

Why Is Mahkota Dewa So Powerful?
The silly answer will be it’s because the name itself is called The Crown of GOD so why would you doubt its miracles ? But I won’t answer only this way

So, here is the reasonable answer. The God’s Crown or Mahkota Dewa is so powerful as it has four crucial chemical substances including Flavonoid, Alkaloid, Saponin and Polyphenol. They are the fantastic four that contribute to the superpower of Mahkota Dewa and provide the health benefits this herbal drink gives to the consumers.

And as an Indonesian, I’m proud that The God’s Crown or Mahkota Dewa is indigenous from Indonesia as I believe the best medicine should be natural.
Also, I’m happy that I’ve brought enough of its dry leaves to Italy for my herbal drinks supply! Now, would you want to try its superpower too?
