Interview with Minister Khaw

Straits Times interview with Minister Khaw

Friday, June 11, 2010 at 9:13am
ST’s Health Correspondent, Ms Salma Khalik interviewing Minister Khaw on his recent bypass.
On how his family coped with the discovery of the blockage, and the experience of going through the operation

Min: My wife was fully and promptly informed of all the findings. My daughters were partially informed at the initial stage as I really thought that it would turn out to be a false alarm. After the CT angiogram which showed a blockage at the left main artery and a bypass recommended, I kept the children fully informed, except for the daughter who works in Shanghai, who was told only after the surgery was over. She flew back the next day. They were naturally concerned and worried: this was a major operation and things could go wrong. I was calm and accepted the need to go through the trauma. That was very helpful, I think, to enable the family members to go through this difficult period.

My wife was next door observing the coronary angiogram, and the next morning saw me off to the OT for the bypass. She returned with my youngest daughter at noon when I was wheeled off to the ICU. I have no clear recollection of that but my wife told me several days later that my daughter burst into tears when she saw me out of the OT, on trolley, with tubes in various places. I vaguely recalled someone crying next to me. I thought it was my wife. It must have been very traumatic for them. I felt very sorry to have caused the distraught.

On the importance of regular health screenings

Min: Plaque build-up takes time, and in my case, I think the blockage would have been picked up at my next Electrocardiogram (ECG) Stress Test. There are many possible tests and the choice of the test will depend on the risk profile of the patient. Calcium score is not meant for the masses, but it could be useful for those with a significant family risk, as in my case. I think we need different screening tests at different frequencies for different patient profiles – some need more frequent testing and additional tests; others do not. They should consult their GPs and if indicated, their cardiologists.

On the impact his operation had on National Healthy Lifestyle Movement

Min: After I have ended my denial, I was completely at peace with myself. I was mentally and physically ready for the bypass.

I only had one worry: how would the public interpret my bypass?

I have been a champion and an active practitioner of the Healthy Lifestyle Movement. Would my bypass cause a dent to the movement? I must have seemed to be a disappointment to the movement!

A few friends whom I aggressively promoted brown rice to several months ago told me, half-in-jest, that they had a debate after hearing of my bypass. They were split in their views: one group felt that they should go even more aggressive and eat red rice; another group felt that they should abandon healthy diet and just eat as they desire.

In fact, besides divine intervention, I was likely saved by a healthy lifestyle. An unhealthy lifestyle with poor diet, no exercise and smoking might have precipitated a fatal heart attack earlier.

The doctors found my right arteries to be normal. They commented that regular exercise must have contributed to that. Other than the blockage in the left artery, the heart is functioning well.

The physiotherapist told me last week that I am ahead of many other patients in my cardiac rehabilitation programme. I was able to start the programme soon after surgery, as an inpatient. This she thinks is a positive factor in rehabilitation.

Certainly, for my new lease of life, I will be even more aggressive in pursuing a healthy lifestyle. Being predisposed to high cholesterol, my job is to prevent new blockages from being formed. Besides a higher dose of anti-cholesterol medication, I will have to persist in my regular exercise and strict diet. And I must continue to be vigilant in my regular health screening, including the ECG stress tests.

Statistically, about 10% of bypass patients have re-admissions for their heart conditions. In the ward, I met a patient who had his bypass 15 years ago. He has been back to hospital for 3 angioplasty sessions (stenting and balloon). I did not probe but I think he continued to smoke.

Mr. Khaw , You should not worry about what the public thinks of your by pass.....you;re only human and more often than not you "inherit" many ailments from your family line which you have absolutely no control over. Who says a doctor cannot get ill or for that matter the Minister of Health cannot have heart disease ? A healthy lifestyle is what "saved" you. Warmest regards and get well soon.

Mr Khaw,I am glad to hear you have fully recovered from the by-pass surgery and would be able to return to work in the coming week.

I would also like to hear your view on many younger generation have been migrated to singapore and grow their roots here. ... See More

For my case, my parents was granted long term visit passes so that our family could stay in unite. However medical expenses has always been on the steep side. My dad was hospitalised and perform a angiogram and angioplasty in May 2010 and the total hospital bill chalked up > S$50K in SGH.

Although we did bought a medishield plan from NTUC income but under the current system, the family would have to pay up the bills before they are able to claim the amount back from the insurance company.

Do you think the Govn should step in to assist by formulating a policy where it would lessen the burden (in term of medical expenses) of the younger generation whom migrated here?

Wish you get well soon.

Agree with F Teck Seng Heng! Mr Khaw - perhaps a calm cool healhty with clarity of mind make a great difference toward any possibly disappointment if any in one's life-journey. What there to worry as everything is afterall conditional. I think you had been doing an excellent job with kind heart too except the 6 weeks of self-delay or self-denial - but overall I must praise that you had been blessed with your own wholesome karmic energy. Smile with Cheers Always~~~

Hi Mr Khaw, I always support your effort in promoting Healthy Lifestyle Movement and no, your surgery doesn't render you a disappointment to the Movement because you've taken responsibility for your health. Without a healthy lifestyle, worst could have happened, even perhaps without warning. Wishing you a speedy full recovery, Mr Khaw. And for those who use your heart surgery as an excuse to revert to unhealthy lifestyle, well, I wish them good luck.

Take good courage Mr Khaw and family, wish you all the best in family loving and growing together too. May you have warm words on a cold evening, a full moon on a dark night, and the road downhill all the way to your door. We need one another to be stronger to enjoy life again. Smiles to you too.The Myth of Cholesterol
The Myth of Causality
See More belief that cholesterol causes atherosclerosis and consequently heart disease.

How did cholesterol get such a bad reputation? Part of the answer lies in the approach taken by modern medicine.
The reasoning along "Germ Theory of Disease", has been to focus on determining a single cause for a given disease, begins to falter when applied to most other diseases. Causation is not so straight forward, especially in cancer and heart disease.

Louis Pasteur himself re-evaluated his germ theory in later years. He is believed to have said : "It is not the germ ; it is the terrain." This statement opens the door for a deeper analysis of disease causation, taking into account the significant role played by the individual's general health (the "terrain").

The Case Against Cholesterol. (Victimization?)
While searching for "the cause" of heart disease, pathologists notice that blood vessels were clogged with plaques and debris. These plaques were areas of hardness with a mushy center ; hence, the term atherosclerosis from the Greek words atheroma meaning "gruel" and sklerosis meaning "hardening." They later determined that the mushy center had a high concentration of cholesterol. Logic followed : Since the narrowing of arteries was caused by atherosclerosis, and cholesterol was at the center of these plaques, cholesterol must be the cause of the disease. The culprit had been found. Oversight in reality. This circumstantial evidence seemed enough to convict the criminal for life.

This line of reasoning is analogous to the following: A pipe in your house breaks. You look inside the pipe and see a white crusty buildup of calcium phosphate compounds. You see that the buildup is greater particularly where the pipe snapped. Did the buildup cause the pipe to break? Of course not. The more likely explanation is that there was a defect in the pipe that allowed for more calcium phosphate to collect at that point. That is all. The buildup was a symptom of the problem, not the cause.

Only a few doctors really understood how cellular dehydration can cause the body to overproduce cholesterol in order to protect some of the drying up cells from premature death. The only logical remedy and step to reverse this overproduction of cholesterol is to replenish the body with correct amount of water daily. Water deficit is the cause, and higher cholesterol is just a symptom.

Protein-rich diet cause plaque buildup in pathology specimens. A high-protein diet was the cause of atherosclerosis. Avoid protein foods, but have a diet of amino acids, no atherosclerosis development.

At first glance, the case against cholesterol appears solidly grounded. But upon further analysis, it becomes evident that circumstantial evidence is being used to convict an otherwise innocent bystander-cholesterol.

France has a high intake of fat and cholesterol and a low incidence of heart disease. Wine. Holland and Norway consume less wine and more fat than France had even lower incident of heart disease. Sorry, it is not wine.

Lipid hypothesis has many weaknesses.
Note: Lipoprotein Cross Section : Since oil and water do not mix, there need to be a way to transport lipids (mainly oils) in the blood (mainly water). Lipoprotein encases the lipids so that they can be transported on the blood.

Staying healthy is a personal responsibility, and

all citizens ought to observe sensible water rehydration-salinity lifestyle habits.

Singapore Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan weighted 60 kilogram when he entered the hospital, but yesterday(June 9,2010) he tipped the scales at 57.5 kilogram.

Based on these body weight, the daily water intake should be monitored closely as follow, because every drop of fresh water available counts for the body economies.

Here is the water-cure formula for a body weight of 60 kg:
1. 31.42 x 60 = 1885.2 milliliter, daily.
He should drink at least 10 percent of 1885.2 ml every 90 minute, ie.,188.5 ml.
And use 0.375 teaspoon of sea salt for his daily diet. (For every 1250 ml of fresh water intake , use 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt, daily.)

Now that the body weight is at 57.5 kg :
1. 31.42 x 57.5 = 1806.65 milliliter, daily.
He should be drinking at least 10 percent of 1806.65 ml every 90 minute, ie., 180.6 ml. And adjust the sea salt intake accordingly, which is 0.361 teaspoon of sea salt for his daily diet.

I hope Mr Khaw Boon Wan and his doctors look into the patient daily salinity and water intake and work out the specifics for him to apply in order to regain and sustain a normalized cholesterol. Avoid all drinks or food which contributes to unintentional cellular dehydration such as coffee, tea, caffeinated products , colas, aspartame.

TIPS: There is clinical evidence that stress reduction helps lower cholesterol levels.

Avoid all foods containing partially hydrogenated oils. Start reading labels ! Limit white sugar - excessive amounts can raise cholesterol levels.

Start adding healthy omega 3s to the diet from fish, flax, walnuts, and olive oil. For cooking at high heat, use organic coconut, sesame, or rice bran oils.

Drink water ! it is the easiest and common sense way to protect the heart and the body from water deficit.

How Dehydration caused Dis-eases

Persistent unintentional dehydration leaves its damaging impact in the fourth dimension of time. Caught in time, these Dis-eases conditions can be reversible , as you read and follow the simple rehydration daily.

Our human body manifests its water shortage by four(4) categories of conditions :
1. perceptive feelings;
2. drought-management programs;
3. crisis calls; and
4. complication of persistent dehydration.

1. Perceptive feelings of water shortage include : tiredness that is not the result of strenuous effort, such as feeling first thing in the morning that you do not wish to get out of the bed.
Anxiety, agitation, shortness of temper, depression, sleep disorder, craving for sodas, alcohol, and even hard drugs and agoraphobia are some of the ways our human brain reflects its water-conservation and water-regulation problems.

2. The drought-management and resource-management programs are : constipation, allergies, asthma, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and the autoimmune diseases.

3. Crisis calls : The newly understood regional thirst signals are : heartburn, rheumatoid joint pain, back pain, migraine headache, colitis pain, fibromyalgic pains , and anginal pain.

4. Complications of dehydration are very extensive and include : obesity, hemorrhoids, cholesterol plagues and arterial diseases, and type 1 diabetes, as well as serious neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, neuritis, phlebitis, lymphomas, cancers, and many more.

Medicine has traditionally divided the human body study-logy into so many specialties and subspecialities based on the different body organs ' way of revealing their water shortages. Each of these groups has its own rituals for investigating within its "fiefdom." The pharmaceutical industry has accommodated physicians and has designed medications that are used in that particular "domain" of medicine. This is why, when dehydration manifest itself in more than one organ or domain of the human body, the patient is forced to see many different specialists to address his or her organ-specific symptoms. Hence the use of so many different pills and treatment procedures, in the same person, for the same underlying cause - dehydration. Here is demonstrate how water alone naturally reverses multiple health concerns.

It is never too late or too early to revise and be wise again for the rest of our journey.......

Use Water-cure. Rather be thankful for the timely warning, and do something about it.

Drink at least 10% of your own daily water-quota (31.42 ml multiply by your present body weight(kg), every 90 minutes. Use 1/4 teaspoon of sea-salt in your daily diet, for every 1250 ml water drank.

Pain is a sign/signal produced by dehydration in the human body. Pain may be common but it is not normal.

To simplify complications is the FIRST essential of success.

World Health Organisation (WHO)'s flu expert 'paid by drug firms'

Health body blasted for lack of transparency

THE STRAITS TIMES SATURDAY,JUNE 5 2010 PAGE C26
PARIS:The World Health Organisation's handling of the Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic was deeply marred by secrecy and conflict of interest with drug companies, a top medical journal said yesterday.

The British Medical Journal (BMJ) said that WHO guidelines on the use of antiviral drugs were prepared by experts who had received consulting fees from the top two manufacturers of these drugs, Roche and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).

In apparent violation of its own rules, the WHO did not publicly disclose these conflicts when the guidelines o how to respond to a pandemic were drawn up in 2004, according to the report, jointly authored by the non profit Bureau of Investigative Journalism, based in London.

A draft assessment prepared for the Council of Europe, also released yesterday, likewise lambasts the WHO for lack of transparency, wasting huge sums of public money and provoking "unjustified fears". It also points to potential health risks stemming from the "fast track" manufacture of vaccines.

Decisions by the global health organisation led governments to stockpile vast quantities of antivirals, and its decision to declare a pandemic in June last year(2009) triggered the purchase of billion of dollars worth of hastily manufactured (purported) vaccines. ( Respected readers can read previous posts regarding the H1N1 vaccines scandalous syndicate in this blog, just type H1N1 and search)

The BMJ report reveals that at least one expert on the secret, 16-member "emergency committee" formed last year(2009) to advise the WHO on whether and when to declare a pandemic had received payment last year(2009) from GlaxoSmithKline.

A World Health Organisation spokesman responded to the BMJ report in general terms, but did not comment on the committee that was set up last year(2009). "Declarations of interest are submitted by all experts who attend WHO expert committee meetings, " said Mt Gregory Haertl.

He added that the recommendations on how to respond to a pandemic were drafted by 20 people and that the WHO released them on the Web for six months to seek public comment before revising them and publishing them in 2004.

Mr David Reddy, who heads Roche's influenza task force, said :"In disease areas like this, there is only a limited number of people who have got direct clinical investigational experience and virology experience, so it is not surprising that we are going to be seeking advice from the same groups of people."

On Thursday, WHO head Margaret Chan announced that the pandemic-level alert would be kept in place despite mounting expectations of a downgrade. While outbreaks have largely disappeared in the northern hemisphere, new cases of Influenza A (H1N1) were expected in the coming weeks south of the equator, she said.

We are very fortunate to be given access to these vital facts before we have unknowingly exposed our children and adults relatives and ourselves to further vaccines dangers.

Thanks to James for these comment and links below:
Has the Ministry read these reports? It is a leap of faith to believe that the H1N1 vaccine can effectively protect Singaporeans, when potential financial conflicts of interest are kept secret at the WHO.

The Message for the Hour

"Emmanuel". . . "Christ". . ."JESUS"

If you are not a disciple of Jesus yet, welcome and I pray God grant you the spirit of wisdom and revelation to know and believe the present truth.

THE European nations passed from the 19th to the 20th century inebriated with the exuberance of man-made philosophies, and spell-bound under the wand of that new fairy-godmother, "Science". The watchword was "Upward and On ward", to the utopia which was at last visibly flashing ahead, the consummation which would crown and glorify the evolution of our human species.

But the fond dreams of the 19th century about the "march of civilization", and the gradual "extinction of the ape and the tiger" thereby, have dissolved in a shocking eye-opening during this 21th century. World wars, gluttonous nationalisms, and tyrannical totalitarianisms have exposed a demoniacal sadism and a worse-than-bestialsavagery in 21st century human nature which out-shame anything ever uncovered in the so-called "primitive barbarians" of antiquity !

The "upward march" is now seen by the most casual observer to be a downward one, from whatever viewpoint it may be considered, whether political, moral, or religious.
Man or woman without God has once more proved himself/herself a failure, and the ultimate salvation of the race by human brains alone has turned out to be nothing but a shimmering mirage.

All around us today , 6 June,2010, there is disillusionment and unrest of soul. The splitting of the atom has not only unceremoniously introduced a new physical epoch, it has brought a new and intenser attitude of mind. Tomorrow is a bigger doubt than ever. The eleventh-hour clarion to us, Jesus' disciples minority, is as never before to lift up the Lord Jesus Christ as "EMMANUEL", the one complete answer to mankind's deepest need.

Yes, our Lord Jesus is "Emmanuel", but saint Matthew calls Him the CHRIST."And Jacob begat Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus which is called the Christ." (reference from Matthew 1:16)
That title name, "Christ" (in Greek: Christos), is, of course, the New Testament correspondent of the Old Testament "Messiah" (in Hebrew language: Mashiyach ), and both mean "The Anointed One".

In Old Testament times there were three classes of public servants who were the subjects of special anointing ; The prophet, the priest, the king. Hebrew prophecy foretells of one Messiah who should somehow be all three in one person.

In the four Gospels of Jesus Christ, He is the anointed Prophet, preaching to the people.
In the book of the Acts (of the Holy Spirit in the apostles) and the written Epistles, He is the ascended Priest, interceding for the people.
In the Book of Revelation of Jesus Christ to His beloved, He is the returned King reigning over the people.

Some golden daybreak in the near future He will break in upon our world again, in overwhelming splendour as World-Emperor, but meanwhile, beside being "Emmanuel " and "Christ", He is "JESUS".

"Thou shalt call His name JESUS (Yahshua), for He shall save His people from their sins."(reference from Matthew 1:21)This is best of all. He who is the embodiment of the Deity visibly, and the fulfillment of prophecy historically, is the Saviour of men morally and spiritually and eternally.

This is the message for the hour ; not the evolution of man, but the incarnation of God ; not some pseudo-deliverance by human brains, but real salvation by divine grace ; not some wistful "extinction of the ape and the tiger " in man, but a Saviour who really saves men from sins !

Politically Incorrect Fluoridation in public water

Well-oiled, agenda-driven water industry propaganda : Fluoride prevents tooth decay and is a harmless additive found in toothpaste, rinses, and our water supply.

Scientific Reality : Fluoride is a cumulative poison, which 13 countries have banned. Half of what we eat collects in teeth and bones, making them dense but brittle. Among other conditions, fluoride can cause dental fluorosis, which signals systemic fluoride poisonong.

Tip:
Only distillation or reverse osmosis filtration can remove fluoride from tap water.

ADMITTING A MISTAKE

Dr.Hardy Limeback , head of the Department of Preventive Dentistry for the University of Toronto, once belonged to a group of dental professionals who gave talks to promote the benefits of water fluoridation. He was one of Canada's primary promoters of public fluoridation -- until he began to take a closer look at the research. Many of our nations political ministers should take a closer look too at our country public water supply, if they really represent the public interest and well-being at all time during their term of office. Dr Limeback noticed the higher incidence of hip fractures. He noticed the mottled and brittle teeth. Dr.Limeback notes : "Here in Toronto we've been fluoridating for 36 years. Yet Vancouver -- which has never fluoridated -- has a cavity rate lower than Toronto's." He warns that children under three should never use fluoridated toothpaste. With regard to the water : "Because of the cumulative properties of the toxins, the detrimental effects on human health are catastrophic."

Recently Dr.Limeback admitted that the truth was bitter pill to swallow. He apologized to students and faculty at the University of Toronto for unintentionally misleading his colleagues : "For the past 15 years , I had refused to study the toxicology information that is readily available to anyone. Poisoning our children was the furthest thing from my mind." He added : "Your well-intentioned dentist is simply following 50 years of misinformation from public health and the dental association. Me , too. Unfortunately, we were wrong."

(still small voice within:SILENCE)

Sound of Silence : Silence is Golden. Hello silence my old friend, I have come to talk with you again. In recent years, vigorous studies on the health consequences of noise have indicated that noise elevates the heart rate, blood pressure, vasoconstriction and stress hormone levels, and increases risk for heart attacks. These reports prove that even when we have become mentally-habituated to noise, the damage it does to our physiologies continues unchecked. Shhhh, silence is still asleep...shhh..silence is in progress in pursuit of golden silence.

Silence : It is more golden than you think.

Warning about playing iPods too loudly have been around for years but some experts now believe that even at reasonable volume (#2) a direct sound-feed into the ears for hours on end may degrade hearing. What did you say? I beg your pardon, kindly repeat again. Noise Induced Deafness diagnosis.

1.Silent meditation improves its practitioner's ability to concentrate.

2. teachers who introduce silence into classrooms lessons report that silence fosters learning and reflection among students.

3.People involved with conflict resolution have found that by incorporating times of silence into negotiations they have been able to foster empathy that inspires a peaceable end to disputes.

4.Silence heals you. Silence can kindle a sensory delight.

5.Silence is a universal refuge and inviolable asylum.

6.Silence is a haven for worship.

Too many people think of silence only in terms of " being silenced", of suppressing truth. In consequence, silence itself is now often suppressed.

Be you in silence, for I Am SILENCE. Having access or creating oases of quiet can greatly enhance healthy quality of life.

We were in a silence womb for months prior being born. Wonderful serenity of silence.

Even a little bit of silence can create a sense of connection with our friends that diminish alienation, and prompts a desire to re-discover more quiet.
Friend, no need to reply or comment here. Be in silent, I understand you more when we are in silence, hmmm......, i hear your heartbeat now.

The Best Way to avoid heart disease

The truth is always in simplicity. The best way to maintain cardiovascular health seem to be the easiest : drink plenty of pure water. When the body cells are healthy and hydrated, cholesterol levels begin to normalize. Recent study of over 200,000 subjects compared those who drank 5 or more glasses of water a day to those who drank 2 or less . Fatal heart attacks were cut in half in the group drinking more water. These results represent a better response than from any other regimen or treatment designated to protect the heart. Cardiologist, Gary Fraser of LOma Linda University, the principal investigator, concluded, drinking water may be "the cheapest and simplest method of preventing coronary heart disease that could be imagined."

Health Promotion Board (HPB) has convinced the public that saturated fats are "artery-clogging oils." However, when artery clogs (atheromas) are examined, none of the fatty acids from coconut oils re found. However, plenty of polyunsaturates are found. Coconut oil is the oil of healthy choice when it comes to cooking with high heat because it is so stable and does not easily degrade into toxic substances like most oils do. Coconut oil ranks right up there with olive oil and unheated flax oil as the world's healthiest oil. Thanks, (read as no thanks) to HPB, the public is now as much afraid of coconut oil as it is of anthrax. Avoid using vegetable oils for cooking in your kitchen.

...everything you think you know about good nutrition, but don't
Interesting, hi, just wonder whether you have read this book authored by Michael Barbee "Politically Incorrect Nutrition: Finding Reality In The Mire Of Food Industry Propaganda". Nice blogging and reading too.

this book "Politically Incorrect Nutrition" exposes many current and widely held beliefs foisted on both consumers and health care practitioners by the well-oiled, agenda-driven food industry propaganda. Politically Incorrect Nutrition educates the reader about the most current scientific realities of good nutrition.

Read this book and you won't be a victim any longer.
A brilliant expose ..This book is a must read fro anyone seeking better health.
A gold mine of hidden issues. It's an intriguing read.

This book dares to challenge the prevailing mythology of food and drink. After reading this compelling book, you will never again take for granted that your fluoridated public water, soy foods, aspartame, or green tea are as safe as their proponents claim. A must-read for anyone who is concerned that the media and medical establishment are not giving the entire picture of nutrition today.

book PIN dedicated to my father, he knew to question what was commonly believed to be true. he told me over 30 years ago that eating margarine was no better than eating plastic. he knew the value of whole, natural foods.

Soy genetically altered seeds :

Soy No Wonder Food. The much consumer interest in soy products has probably made happy campers out of Monsanto and food giant Archer Daniels Midland.
Monsanto can sell more of its genetically altered seeds, which can tolerate greater amounts of another of their products (Round-Up*TRADEMARK), and Archer Daniels Midland can sell its beans and processed soy goods hand-over-bushel to countless businesses.

With food aisles today brimming with over 300 soy products, is soy beer soon to follow? Yes, in fact it's already here.

How much is fact and how much is hype? We are told over and over how soy isa wonder food -- how it protects humans from practically all known disease, particualrly breast cancer and osteoporosis. The Japanese, we are informed, consume huge amounts of soy and have low rates of these diseases relative to western diet population. So eat soy and live a long, healthy life.

But, wait and consider again, Soy is No Wonder food. How much of what the media tells us is based on good, sound, impartial science, and how much is based on the premise that a lie, often repeated, eventually is accepted as the truth?

1.Consuming large amounts of soy cannot be directly tied to lowered rates of breast cancer and heart diseas - or even to less osteoporosis and fewer unpleasant postmenopausal symptoms.

2. There is evidence that consumption of sea vegetables, and not soy, with the former high iodine content, result in lowered rate of breast in Japan. The japanese suffer from high rates of esophagus, stomach ,pancreas, liver, and thyroid cancers. Soy appears to offer no protection here.

3. It is a myth that Asians eat a "soy-based diet." A typical intake of soy amount to about two teaspoons a day in China.(Source, Sally Fallon and Mary Enig. Ph.D., "Tragedy and Hype : The Third International Soy Symposium," Nexus Magazine, Volume 7, Number 3

Soy No Wonder Food

Propanganda: Soy protects against breast cancer and osteoporosis - so like most Asians, westerners should eat more tofu and other soy products.

Reality : The Asian citizens diet is not soy based. Unfermented soy products are not digestible. Soy is not a complete protein, and a pesticide-laden, soy-based diet can lead to severe nutritional deficiencies and hormonal imbalances.

Monkey Business at the FDA: Finally, approval of health claims by the States FDA(Food and Drugs Authority) often has a price tag. If you have the money and the influence, you can frequently get what you want. The large soy industry has both. Since 1998 at least 92 percent of FDA approval committee meetings had at least one member with a conflict of interest. In 55 % of the meetings, at least half of the FDA advisors who were consulted had a conflict. Federal law prohibits this kind of financial conflict, but since 1998 the FDA has lifted the restrictions over 800 times. What is more appalling is the fact that the FDA keeps these conflict-of-interest dealings secret, making it impossible to track the money and the influence.Wine's link to health is better documented than soy's claims.

TIPS:
Use fermented soy products like tempeh, tamari, miso, and natto. These may have anticancerous effects. They can be found at health food stores. By the way I don't run any healthy food store, so I have no conflict of interest in letting you know this fact about soy products.

Avoid soy milk, soy energy bars, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, and regular consumption of tofu.

IS YOUR SOY FERMENTED?
The ancient Chinese initially did not use soy as a food crop. Eventually, they discovered that by fermenting the beans the soy protein could be digested more easily, and the phytic acid, toxins, and antinutrients would be largely destroyed. Therefore, tempeh, tamari (soy sauce), and natto became useful foods in small amounts. Natto is a pungent, fermented soy dish that is rich not only in beneficial bacteria, but also contain plenty of vitamin PQQ (Pyrroloquinoline quinone), a very recently discovered vitamin. PQQ is the first new vitamin discovered since 1948; it appears to support fertility. In addition, a landmark study of 143,000 Japanese women, which appeared to show that the incidence of breast cancer was reduced with soy, was based on the comparison of miso - another fermented product.
