Robin Gibb, one of three brothers who made up the group the Bee Gees behind "Saturday Night Fever" and other now-iconic sounds from the 1970s, died on Sunday, according to a statement on his website.
He was 62.
Gibb "passed away today
following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery," said the
statement, which was attributed to his family. He died in England at
10:47 a.m. (5:47 a.m. ET), according to a post on his official Twitter
feed.
News of his death set off
a torrent of reaction in social media. Musician Bryan Adams, for
instance, lamented "another great singer dying too young" on Twitter,
while fellow British band Duran Duran and current pop sensation Bruno
Mars were among many who posted their condolences.
"The Bee Gees were/are
the gold standard when it comes to pop/r&b melody, harmony and vocal
arrangement. Massive loss," wrote prolific pop songwriter Claude Kelly
on his Twitter feed.

Reflecting on the career of Robin Gibb
2002: Bee Gees and 'Saturday Night Fever'
Queen's Brian May lauded Gibb and his "amazing voice, so distinctive and expressive" in a statement on his website.
"For me, the music of the
Bee Gees really has peaks as high as any mountain ever climbed by a
Pop/Rock group," May said. "The Bee Gees will never be forgotten."
Diagnosed with colon and
liver cancer, Gibb had been in a coma as he battled pneumonia earlier
this spring, representative Doug Wright said.
Doctors believe that
Gibb had a secondary tumor, Wright said April 14, confirming a news
account in the UK newspaper The Sun. Gibb had emergency surgery in 2010
for a blocked bowel and then had more surgery for a twisted bowel,
Wright confirmed.
The only surviving member of the three Bee Gees is brother Barry, 65.
Robin's twin brother,
Maurice, died in 2003 from a twisted bowel. And younger brother Andy
Gibb -- who was not part of the group -- died at 30 from a heart
infection.
Robin Gibb's death followed by just three days the loss of another major star of the 1970s disco era -- Donna Summer, who died Thursday of lung cancer at 63.
"First Donna Summer passes and now another 70s icon, Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees passes," actress Marlee Matlin tweeted Sunday.
Robin Gibb was born in
1949 on Isle of Man off the British coast, and the Gibb boys grew up in
Manchester. The family later moved to Redcliffe, Australia, where their
group performed on television as the B.G.'s -- a moniker they later
altered to the Bee Gees. Their father, Hughie, was a drummer and
big-band leader.
The family returned to
England in the 1960s, and they began to emerge on an international
scale. Through the end of that decade and into the next, they crafted
melodies that utilized their unique voices to gain acclaim thanks to
songs like "To Love Somebody," "Lonely Days" and "How Can You Mend a
Broken Heart."
By the mid-1970s, they transitioned to develop more dance-oriented hits such as "Jive Talkin' " and "Nights on Broadway."
Yet for all these
earlier successes, the Bee Gees skyrocketed to new heights with the 1977
release of "Saturday Night Fever," a movie starring John Travolta that
was built around the group's falsetto voices and disco-friendly songs.
In the latter part of
the 1970s, the Bee Gees "dominated dance floors and airwaves. With their
matching white suits, soaring high harmonies and polished,
radio-friendly records, they remain one of the essential touchstones to
that ultra-commercial era," the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame says on its
website.
"Saturday Night Fever"
and the group's 1979 album "Spirits Having Flown" yielded six No. 1
hits, "making the Bee Gees the only group in pop history to write,
produce and record that many consecutive chart-topping singles,"
according to the Hall of Fame.
While often more in the
background, Robin Gibb was the lead singer on several of the Bee Gees'
top tunes including "I Started a Joke" and "I've Gotta Get a Message to
You." He also recorded several solo albums during his career.
Inducted into the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, the Bee Gees sold more than 200 million
albums, and their soundtrack album to "Saturday Night Fever" was the
top-selling album until Michael Jackson's "Thriller" claimed that
distinction in the 1980s.
In a 2008 interview with
Music Week, Robin Gibb shared one of his all-important rules for
songwriting: "always keep a tape running," in order to capture a moment
of brilliance and inspiration.
"You never know in a
three-hour writing session when you are going to come up with something
and then if you'll remember it completely," he said. "All the ideas,
everything, will be on tape and then you can always refer back at any
time.
"Melodies will be born
for the first time during writing and unless you have it on tape you
haven't got any way of remembering them. That is a cardinal rule."
He also spoke of how he found it "good to have deadlines and pressure."
"We certainly had a
deadline with 'Fever' to write all those songs. I think, in one week, we
wrote 'How Deep Is Your Love,' 'Night Fever,' 'Stayin' Alive,' 'If I
Can't Have You' and the rest. Having a deadline sharpens you up, it gets
you out of bed and it stops you going to bed, too," Gibb said.
Gibb is survived by his wife, Dwina; his daughter, Melissa, and sons Spencer and Robin-John.

JOHN LENNON has Imagine, Paul McCartney has Yesterday and Robin Gibb - and the Bee Gees - has Stayin' Alive.
The second that looped disco beat starts up and the infectious riff begins to strut you're transported to a decade where flares, big chains and silk shirts open to the navel are embraced and desired.
The feverishly high voices break out and suddenly we're all John Travolta on the dance floor.
Donna Summer's I Feel Love may have kick-started Disco but Staying Alive was Disco.
Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk, I'm a woman's man, no time to talk.
Music loud and women warm.
I've been kicked around since I was born.
And now it's all right, it's OK.
And you may look the other way.
We can try to understand
The New York Times' effect on man.
Whether you're a brother
Or whether you're a mother,
You're stayin' alive, stayin' alive.
Strip away the cheese and the endless parodies and what you get here is the raw sexuality of a fighter. But what makes it work is the vulnerability at its heart. For that, you can thank Robin. "Stayin' Alive is about survival in the big city - any big city - but especially New York," he said of the song's message.

The song was an instant hit, selling millions and dominating the charts but the Gibbs always had mixed emotions about it: Stayin' Alive made their fortunes but it also overshadowed their careers. But as shadows go, you can't get better than a man with one arm in the air getting ready to jive.

Robin, his twin brother Maurice and elder brother Barry, scaled the heights of the pop world in the 1970s with disco hits including "How Deep Is Your Love", "Stayin' Alive", and "Night Fever".
The trio's high-pitched close harmonies, sharp songwriting and disco sounds made them one of the biggest-selling groups of all time, notching up record sales of more than 200 million since their first hits in the 1960s.
Tributes poured in from fellow musicians.
Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall called him a "musical giant" while DJ Paul Gambaccini said he was "talented beyond even his own understanding".
"Everyone should be aware that the Bee Gees are second only to Lennon and McCartney as the most successful songwriting unit in British popular music," Gambaccini said.
Robin lost his battle against cancer of the colon and the liver just a month after confounding doctors by emerging from a coma after suffering pneumonia.
He underwent surgery in August 2010 for a blocked intestine -- the same condition that killed brother Maurice in 2003 -- but a tumour was found and he was diagnosed with cancer.
The singer looked gaunt in his last few months as he struggled against the relentless disease.
Andy Gibb, their younger brother who was not in the Bee Gees, died in 1988 from cocaine addiction.
"I sometimes wonder if all the tragedies my family has suffered -- like Andy and Maurice dying so young and everything that's happened to me recently -- is a kind of karmic price we are paying for all the fame and fortune we've had," he told The Sun newspaper in March.
Robin's death came just days after the Queen of Disco Donna Summer died from lung cancer in Florida at the age of 63.
Robin enjoyed a musical career spanning six decades, from humble beginnings in the 1950s singing with his brothers in cinemas, to his recent first classical venture, "The Titanic Requiem", penned with his son Robin-John.
But he was too ill to attend the April premiere.
The singer and his wife-to-be Molly Hullis had survived a 1967 rail crash in southeast London that killed 49 people.
"I know what it is to live through a mass disaster... it haunts me to this day," he wrote in The Mail on Sunday newspaper in January.
Robin Hugh Gibb was born on December 22, 1949 on the Isle of Man, the British crown dependency, about half an hour before Maurice.
Soon after, the Gibb family moved to Manchester. They then moved to Brisbane in Australia in 1958.
The Bee Gees soon became child stars and had their first hit in 1963, "The Battle of the Blue and Grey", performed on national television.
"We used to say that we were one soul in three bodies. We worked with such spirit between us, able to read each other's thoughts when we wrote together," Robin once said.
The trio returned to Britain in 1967 where they soon had several more successes, including the UK number one "Massachusetts".
"How Can You Mend a Broken Heart", the group's first US number one, along with "Jive Talkin'", "Nights on Broadway" and "You Should be Dancing" established them as big stars.
But the disco soundtrack "Saturday Night Fever" (1977), which sold more than 40 million copies, was their biggest success, becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time.
The brothers also also wrote hit songs for others including Diana Ross, ("Chain Reaction"), Barbra Streisand ("Woman In Love"), Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton ("Islands In The Stream") Dione Warwick ("Heartbreaker") and Frankie Valli ("Grease").
Their last studio album was 2001's "This Is Where I Came In".
The Bee Gees were made Commanders in the Order of the British Empire (CBE) -- one step below a knighthood -- in 2004.
Robin Gibb was a friend of former British prime minister Tony Blair, who was criticised for taking "freebie" breaks with celebrity pals after holidaying at the singer's Miami mansion in 2006.
He appeared on a charity version of "Islands In The Stream" which topped the British charts in 2009, making the Gibbs the first songwriters to pen number UK ones in five successive decades.
He is survived by his second wife Dwina and three children.

The Bee Gees (left to right) Maurice, Barry and Robin Gibb in 1980.
THE death of Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb has silenced the most distinctive brotherly harmonies in pop music.
While attention tended to focus on handsome elder brother Barry, it was Robin's falsetto vocals that gave the group much of its trademark sound.Robin's death in London at 62, after intestinal surgery, followed the death of his twin brother Maurice under similar circumstances in 2003, and youngest brother Andy's death from heart failure aged just 30 in 1988.
It leaves Barry as the sole surviving Bee Gee, along with elder sister Lesley and their mother, Barbara.
Bee Gees star Robin Gibb dies aged 62
The family issued a statement early yesterday, Australian time, that Robin had lost his long battle with cancer and requesting privacy "at this very difficult time".
UK radio DJ and family friend Mike Read said Robin was a gifted songwriter and singer.
"He had a great gift for pathos, more than any other singer I know. His voice could make you cry, it was just incredible," Read said.
The group will be best remembered for its 1977 soundtrack album Saturday Night Fever, which spawned the international disco hits Stayin' Alive, Night Fever and How Deep Is Your Love, selling 15 million copies in the US alone.
Their career began in Australia, after the family migrated from Manchester to Redcliffe in Queensland in 1958.
The life and times of Robin Gibb
They were spotted performing at a Brisbane speedway by manager Bill Goode, who introduced them to promoter Bill Gates, which - along with Barry Gibb - gave rise to the initials BGs. Such was its popularity that by 1960, the group had a regular spot on the local TV show Cottee's Happy Hour, and in 1962 it signed to Festival Records, becoming a household name with the hit Spicks and Specks.

Adelaide-born entrepreneur Robert Stigwood was also instrumental in the Bee Gees' success, becoming their manager when the brothers returned to the UK in late 1966.
He signed them to his RSO company, which produced Saturday Night Fever.
Robin contracted pneumonia and fell into a coma in a London hospital last month after missing the premiere of his classical work Titanic Requiem.
The Bee Gees last performed in Adelaide to a sell-out audience at Memorial Drive in 1989.
