Do the doctors put their money where their mouths are? Or should the doctors be paid when the treatment is not completed yet?

So a young man said he wanted to be a doctor when he grows up. Why ? Because doctors demand respect and good money, too!
Well that is true, when many medical students were increasing opting for more profitable specialties, money-wise, in "lifestyles" fields such as plastic surgery, resulting in a dearth of application for fields like internal medicinal. Face value give more money than internal value.

In Singapore, the doctors earning in private practices from different disciplines , a month are as follow. Some are higher than these conservative figures:-
Plastic surgeons earning $30,000 to $70,000 per month. Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty involving the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body.
Ophthalmologists earning $25,000 to $70,000 per month. An ophthalmologist is a specialist in medical and surgical eye problems.
Cardiologists earning $30,000 to $70,000 per month. Cardiologist specializes in the study or treatment of heart diseases and heart abnormalities.
Psychiatrists earning $15,000 to $50,000 per month. A psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in psychiatry, the branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, study, and treatment of mental disorders.
Gynecologists earning $20,000 to $70,000 per month. Gynecologists are doctors who specialize in women's health in general, especially in relation to the female reproductive system. The medical practice dealing with the health of the female reproductive systems (vagina, uterus, and ovaries) and the breasts. Literally, outside medicine, the term means "the science of women".
Oncologists earning $15,000 to $60,000 per month. A medical practitioner qualified to diagnose and treat tumours. An oncologist is a doctor who treats cancer. Usually, an oncologist manages a person's care and treatment once he or she is diagnosed with cancer. The field of oncology has three major areas: medical, surgical, and radiation.
General Practitioners earning $8,000 to $10,000 per month. In the medical profession, a general practitioner (GP) is a medical doctor who treats acute and chronic illnesses and provides preventive care and health education to patients. A general practitioner, also called a GP or generalist, is a physician who does not specialize in one particular area of medicine. GPs provide routine health care (e.g., physical examinations, immunizations) and assess and treat many different conditions, including illnesses and injuries.

Tinnitus isn't a disease

All noise is sound, but not all sound is noise.
Ringing, buzzing, hissing, chirping - the noise in your head can drive you to distraction, especially if you suffer from tinnitus.

How it works: Tinnitus is not disease. It is a collection of symptoms with several possible causes including reduced blood flow in your inner ear. Your inner ear contain tiny cells shaped like hairs that turn sound vibrations into electrical impulse. The pulses travel to your brain, which interprets them as sound.
These hair cells need a nutrient rich supply of blood to stay healthy. Too little blood moving through your inner ear means the cells become sick and die.

Medical Errors

How to protect Ourselves against Medical Errors? Can doctors be trusted?

In Singapore many warnings have been given to GPs to stop fancy treatments to naive customers, but many due to the lucrative money just keep on to their business as usual and growing wealthier while many victims are crying foul play. Who is at fault? The doctors or the naive customers? The doctors have the licenses to practice while the customers have the right to choose.

The real causes of medical errors is GREED. Greed manifest itself in many ways:
1. Profit-Sharing Practice. -- In India, and many modern countries where a proliferation of commercialized institutions has led to intense competition, dubious practices (better known among insiders as "cut practice") have been noted. It's a profit-sharing practice, in which the doctor gets a cut (of as much as 20-30%) from the laboratory, nursing home or chemist he refers the patient to.

The same practice is said to be happening here too.There are some clinics here which practice fee-splitting, where their is a sharing of fees when a patient is referred to another doctor. Keep your eyes and ears open when you are seeking second opinions from another doctors for your condition. This is unethical and is not allowed under the Medical Ethical Code. Even this unhealthy practice is ignore by many GPs. GREED is dangerous!

Over medication.
In Japan and many more modern countries, which has highest per-capital drug consumption in the world, it has been ascertained that there is greed and manipulation of the medication system by doctors who receive fixed fees for the drugs they prescribe.
This lower the cost of medicines , but reimbursement from the Japanese government remains the same. The difference forms the doctors' profit margin.
In the Indian experience, pharmaceutical companies push their drugs on doctors, who then prescribe way too many drugs which are often more expensive than their available alternatives.

Unnecessary Tests & Procedures.
The American Medical Association once conducted a survey, in which 75% of doctors admitted that they order more tests that are strictly necessary at times.

Patients- Cramming.
Patients seeking treatment at outpatients department wait for hours for their turn, only to get 2 or 3 minutes with the doctor.
Over a 7-hour period, the 12 or 13 doctors at the department see between 120 and 180 patients daily and that means each doctor can spend only a few minutes with each patient. How much can a patient en-quire from the few minutes? Your guess is as good as my guess. Nothing.
The acute shortage of capable and patients-sensitive doctors means patients are not thoroughly examined and in some cases, serious ailments go undetected.

Pressure to fill up beds and vacant beds as soon as possible.
Some hospitals boast of having consultants, who in reality, merely LEND THEIR NAMES to a spectrum of hospitals and end up spending just 1 hour in each of them. What the consultant does is rent a room in the hospital to see patients (who are admitted in the hospital and have to visit the consultant frequently). The visits are charged and the consultant shares the patients' fees with the hospital. Hospitals resort to this because of pressure from the management to fill up hospital beds, and vacant them as soon as possible. Scare tactics often work for the naive patients. Many patients who go to doctors are often ignorant, either by choice or by circumstance.

Don't take "Energy" drinks? Why?

  Don't take them as a "sport"drink.

How healthy are "energy"drinks? They are high in sugar and caffeine and contain certain unnecessary "nutrients". They all contain caffeine in quantities that food advisers said were "undesirable".
For soft drinks, the maximum caffeine level suggested by British government food advisers in 1993 was 125mg per litre.
The survey (by WHICH? magazine) found that 2 brands sold here have 3 times the amount of caffeine found in Coca-Cola.

Local "energy" drink.
Are "energy" drinks here high in caffeine too?
The Consumers Association of Penang bought 3 brands -- Power Gold, Red Bull and Livita -- and tested them for caffeine. Their test showed that all of them have caffeine above the maximum recommended dose for soft drinks.

Based on the test results:
* Power Gold has 80.13 mg/240 ml caffeine (ie about 334 mg per litre). This is more than 2&1/2 times the suggested maximum level for caffeine in soft drinks in Britain.

* Red Bull has a caffeine level of 26.4 mg/150 ml (ie 176 mg per litre).

*Livita has 17.02 mg/100 ml (ie 172 mg per litre).

Drinks like these often claim to refresh and revitalise. Don't be duped again! You have been forewarned here. Livita for instance, has these claims :"refreshes", "fight fatigue fast". One can be forgiven for thinking that these are sports drinks or drinks that can be indulged in after a strenuous workout.

Unnecessary "nutrients"
They are also claimed to have unique formula of added vitamins and nutrients like taurine (present in Power Gold, Red Bull and Livita) and glucuronolactone ) the labels of Power Gold and red Bull say they contain D-glucuronolactone).

Taurine and glucuronolactone are naturally produced in the human body, but there is no firm evidence to support their use as a food supplement. Also isolated elements supplements will never work for the body. Other synegitic elements in organic forms are needed for natural body usage.

We are advise strongly against using these drinks as "sport"drinks.
It is important to replenish fluid after exercise, but caffeiene in drinks can only cause further dehydration and any driks with high levels of sugar are absorbed into the human body more slowly than drinks with little or no sugar.
Even if you are not into sports, taking these drinks on a regular basis is not encouraged either, especially if you are already a coffee drinker or regularly consume foods or drinks which contain caffeine (eg: soft drinks, chocolates, etc).
This is because excessive caffeine can cause palpitations, increase gastric secretions, act as a diuretic (increasing urine flow) and cause gastric ulcers.

The General Adaption Syndrome (GAS) is a theory(by Hans Selye) that described the human body's short term and long term reaction to stressors. He developed the GAS after observing patients with different diseases reacting similarly to the stress of illness.

"C" Cruise

Fiction: Coral calcium from Okinawa, Japan, can cure over 200 illnesses, including heart disease, Alzheimer's, and cancer.

Fact: The only thing these supplements are sure to do is put a dent in your wallet. If you still do not feel the pinch yet.

I thoroughly enjoyed your Wilkes-Barre seminar and commented to my friend that it was the most interesting evening I had experienced in a long time. During the question and answer period, I explained to you my experience with a knee injury, but with this letter I hope to bring more detail and my reasoning in the matter.

On October 7, 1993, while running playing tennis, I injured my left knee; I heard a pop and squish and could no longer bend the knee.
Fortunately I did not fall to the ground. I was able to hang onto the net between the courts. Because of the pain, I painfully hobbled to my car and drove to my chiropractor thinking he might be able to help. He worked on the knee for more than an hour with ultrasound and I still felt no improvement. Once again, it was excruciating to get and out my car, but I did manage and finally arrived home at about 8:30 that evening. I hobbled up to bed and took Excedrin for the pain and tried sleeping without much success.

The next morning it was even more painful so my husband drove me to the knee center in Wilkes-Barre for an examination and what we thought would be arthroscopic surgery. Dr.Cooper referred me to the MRI Center for diagnosis and they reported that I had a bucket handle tear of the lateral meniscus. Dr.Cooper suggested that surgery should be a last resort because of the delivery of complications possible. He suggested that I stay off my feet as much as possible, but could go to work and do light things around the house.

As long as I kept the left knee straight, I didn't experience intense pain, but I limped for months. I went up and down stairs one step at a time for months. I returned to limited tennis playing about three months later but was unable to run. After playing tennis, I had to wrap my knee in an ice wrap for half an hour because of the pain. The doctor prescribed two weeks of physical therapy that helped some. After about four months, I began to get the courage to try running during tennis. I could do most activities, but frequently when I ran I would get a sharp pain at the side of my knee. Thank God the body knows instinctively how to help itself and if I would raise my left foot up to my knee four or five times the pain would go away. At that point , I felt fortunate that I had found something to ease what I felt would be chronic knee pain.

My therapy continued for all of 1994 and in January 1995, I read an article in the Metro about the therapeutic effects of water. I purchased "Your Body's Many Cries for Water" book and it made sense to me. On page 45 you show a well-hydrated and a dehydrated joint comparison, and even though I was drinking close to two quarts of water a day, I reasoned that my knee pain was probably because the knee cartilage was not sufficiently hydrated because it was thinner and somewhat brittle, it had a tendency to get caught between the bones during certain knee motion. It was at that time that I decided to increased water intake to three quarts a day. After several weeks of the increased water intake, I was able to run again. I can even squats without any pain, and it is wonderful to play a vigorous game of tennis with no fear of pain, thanks only to your Water Cure.

I very much believe that water, proper nutrition, exercise, fresh air, a positive altruistic attitude and the nutrient of natural daylight and sunlight are the most effective therapies for good health and best of all, they are free; and the only side effects are a sense of accomplishment and well being.
