Put God First , not idols

📖 “You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image… you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God.” – Exodus 20, verses 3–5.

From the beginning, God’s command has been clear: He alone must sit on the throne of our hearts. Yet while ancient idols were carved from wood or molded from stone, today’s idols often live unseen—hidden in our desires, ambitions, and affections.

Idolatry is not just about statues—it’s about the heart.

✅ Idols can be careers, money, relationships, or even secret sins

✅ Whatever takes first place in your life becomes your god

✅ Only Lord Jesus Christ can truly satisfy the deep longings of your soul

The Bible warns us that “those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them” (Jonah 2:8). Idols promise joy but leave us empty. They promise security but collapse under pressure. They promise peace but cannot silence the storms within. Only God can do that.

Even when idols disguise themselves as good things.

Even when they quietly compete for your devotion.

Even when they steal your attention away from the Lord…

God still calls you back to Himself with mercy.

Before we pray, let's first take a moment to listen to God's word and then we'll pray together.

Exodus 20: verses 3 to 5 says, "You shal have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them, nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God. "

From the very beginning, God has made it clear.

He alone is worthy of our worship.

He alone is to sit on the throne of our hearts. Yet all throughout history, mankind has struggled with this very command.

In the Old Testament, idols were often visible, tangible things. People carved them from wood, molded them from bronze or silver, and lifted them high as gods of their own making.

They bowed before statues that could not speak, prayed to images that could not hear and trusted in lifeless objects that could not save.

Now you may think thankfully I don't bow to statues or worship poles of wood but idolatry didn't disappear with the passing of ancient times. It simply shifted forms.

Today's idols are often invisible. They are not made of stone or metal but are built in the heart. And this is why idolatry is just as dangerous today as it was then. Because the idols we carry inside are harder to see, easier to justify, and often go unnoticed until they have already stolen God's rightful place in our lives.

So, how can a person have an idol of the heart? Remember our definition. An idol is anything or anyone who receives the devotion, love, and trust that rightfully belongs to God. Whatever you put first in your life, that is your God. Whatever you honor above all else, that is your God. Whatever you value so highly that you cannot imagine losing it. Be careful because that may already be an idol. It could be your career if it defines your identity more than God's word does. It could be money if your security rests in a bank account more than in God's promises.

It could even be your business, your husband or wife, or your children. All of these are good gifts from God. But if they climb onto the throne of  your heart, they become idols.

Even the secret sins that you cling to and refuse to surrender, sins of pride, lust, bitterness, or addiction, can become idols when they take the place that belongs only to him.

This is why we must carefully examine our lives because God is clear. He will not share his glory. He alone must be first.

If it is not the Lord who holds first place in your heart, then something else already has taken that spot. And anything that competes with God for your attention, your loyalty, your devotion, that is an idol.

The Bible warns us about this in Jonah 2:8. "Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God's love for them."

Notice the tragedy in that statement. God's love never stops. His love never runs dry. His love is constant.

But when you cling to idols, you are the one turning away.

You cannot hold tightly to both an idol and the true living God at the same time. To hold one is to release the other. And so many people unknowingly live with divided hearts, longing for God's blessings, but clinging to things that pull them away from his presence.

Dear reader, let me tell you this.

Only God can satisfy the deep longing of your soul.

Only God can fill the emptiness inside.

Only God can give true meaning and purpose to your life.

When you try to replace him with lesser things, the result is always the same.

Emptiness.

Idols may promise joy, but they leave you restless.

They may promise security, but they collapse when life falls apart.

They may promise peace, but they cannot silence the storms within you.

This is why idolatry grieves the heart of God.

Because it is not just the breaking of a commandment.

It is the breaking of relationship with God.

It is turning your back on the one who loves you most and trading him for things that cannot love you back.

The Old Testament tells story after story of how Israel fell into idolatry and faced the painful consequences. Yet every time God extended mercy, every time he called them back, he gave them opportunities to repent and to return to him. And that same mercy is offered to you today.

Your idols can be torn down. Your heart can be cleansed.

The throne that belongs to God alone can be reclaimed.

But the choice is yours.

So today I encourage you look closely at your life. Ask yourself, what is first in my heart?

What do I cling to most tightly? What do I run to when I feel afraid, tired, or empty?

If the answer is not the Lord, then that thing has already become an idol. But here is the good news. Jesus Christ came to set you free by his grace.

Every idol can be shattered.

Every chain can be broken.

You don't have to live bound to false gods.

You don't have to chase shadows.

You don't have to keep bowing to things that cannot save you.

As 1 John 5 21 says, "Dear children, keep yourselves from idols. This is God's loving warning to you   because idols will destroy you, but God will give you life. So beloved, choose this day whom you will serve. May it be the Lord and the Lord alone."

Now let's take a moment to pray together.

Father God, I come before you today in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior.

I come seeking forgiveness for my sins and for the many times I have placed other things above you.

Lord, I turn away from my old ways, from sinful habits that have held me captive and from passions that have distracted me from your presence.

With brokenness in my heart, I surrender everything that has tried to steal your rightful place in my life.

Father, move within me, search me, and cleanse me.

I do not allow anything to remain hidden that would separate me from you.

Lord, tear down every idolatrous image that I have allowed to take root in my heart.

Cast out every passion, every person,  and every desire that seeks to be  exalted above you.

Whether it is pride, greed, lust,  bitterness, or even good things wrongly placed above you, remove them.

Father, destroy every idol that competes with the lordship of Jesus Christ in my life.

I declare today with boldness and conviction that Jesus Christ is the King of kings and he reigns forever in my life.

I declare that he is the Lord of lords and he rules over every part of my being.

Jesus Christ, you are the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

Everything begins with you. Everything exists through you. And everything will end in you.

It has always been about you, Lord Jesus.

It will always be about you now and forever more.

Your word in Psalm 135: verses 15-18 speaks so clearly.

¹⁵ The idols of the nations are silver and gold made by human hands.

¹⁶ They have mouths but cannot speak, eyes but cannot see.

¹⁷ They have ears but cannot hear nor is their breath in their mouths.

¹⁸ Those who make them will be like them and so will all who trust in them."

Father, I recognize that idols are empty, powerless, and lifeless.

They cannot save. They cannot heal. They cannot speak truth. And they cannot give life.

And those who worship them will become just as lifeless.

But you, Jehovah, are the great I Am, the creator of heaven and earth, the everlasting God who was and is and is to come.

You are Elohim, the Almighty, the one   who holds all power, who knows all things, and who is present everywhere at all times.

You are limitless in majesty, unmatched in glory, and perfect in wisdom. To you and to you alone belong all honor, all power, and all praise.

Lord, you are greater than anything this world could ever offer.

You alone are worthy of my devotion. You alone deserve my highest affection.

No achievement, no relationship, no possession, no earthly pleasure can compare to the beauty of your presence. Father, open my eyes to see what is evil in my heart.

Expose every hidden idol. Remove every false god that I have unknowingly allowed to live in me. and open my eyes to walk in obedience to your word. You have commanded me in Exodus 20: verses 3-6.

; ³ “You shall have no other gods before me.

“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

⁵ You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

⁶ but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Lord, help me to honor this commandment in my daily life. Help me to keep you first always.

Purge my heart, oh God. Cleanse me from hidden sins. Tear down every evil altar that has been erected in my heart.

Shatter every carved image, every false god, every secret sin.

Lord, give me an undivided heart, one that is set only on Jesus Christ.

I pray for eyes that are fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of my faith. I pray for a mind that is renewed daily by your word and not conformed to the patterns of this world.

I pray for a burning desire to follow Jesus wholeheartedly to be a true disciple who denies myself, takes up my cross, and walks in his footsteps daily.

Holy Spirit, empower me to live free from idols.

Give me strength to resist the temptation to elevate anything above my Lord.

Remind me each day that nothing can ever take the place of God.

And when the enemy tempts me to turn away, let me remember that clinging to idols is turning away from God's love.

Let me choose instead to cling to Christ who is the fountain of living water. Lord, may my life reflect this truth that you alone are God and beside you there is no other.

May my home be filled with your   presence, not with distractions.

May my heart be an altar of worship to you, not a shrine to idols.

May my words, my choices, my relationships, and my actions declare that Jesus Christ is Lord.

And Father, I thank you for your mercy. Even when I have turned aside, you have called me back.

Even when I wandered, you pursued me. Even when l chose lesser things, you reminded me of your unfailing love. Thank you for your patience, for your kindness, and for always making a way for me to return.

So today, I surrender every idol. I surrender every false hope. I surrender every competing love. I surrender all to you.

Take your rightful place on the throne of my heart. rule and reign over every part of me, Lord.

And I seal this prayer in the mighty and precious name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. Amen.
