●Rob Ramsey on Jun 15, 2023:
I plan to move to Paris from USA at end of year or next spring. I lived there in 1999 for six months. Are there many English speaking Catholic priests?
Thank you.

●Tana Williams on Dec 29, 2019:
I meant one franc equal to $0.25 American. Today 1 euro equals $1.12. One bedroom apartment outside of New York City costs minimum $1,500 in medium to not-so-great Neighborhood. Better neighborhood can cost up to $3,000 average house price $750,000 average apartment price to buy two bedrooms no outside space $500,000 and taste of food is terrible compared to France.

●Tana Williams on Dec 29, 2019:
Paris seems to have changed considerably, though food prices are much lower that living near New York City. When I live in Paris 1968 it cost me 135 Francs equal to $0.25 full cost to have a baby plus free medical care. In America at that time it would have cost over $2,500. In NYC area ground beef cost $6 for 1 pound roughly half kilo. Average price for inexpensive shoes roughly $100 4 women's shirt about $70. And Metro monthly pass $140. Healthcare in France is far cheaper then America and much better health care too. But here now due to Trump the very very rich pay no taxes while the rest of us pay high tax for nothing. Don't complain about high French tax at least you get things like healthcare with it.

■Anonymous on Aug 04, 2023: London is quite bad I have to agree ( certainly with the knife crime ) it is probably int the top 5 most dangerous cities in Europe and probably top 20 in the world but it is just not comparable to Lyon marseille or paris, Paris is probably the worst city for drugs it's called crackland it's full of weed cocaine opium hwroin the list goes on and it's full of shootings murder gang violence burglary and I lived in le 8 eme with is one of the nicest areas in Paris and now I live in Peckham ( and if your from London you know that it's bad) but does compare to those three cities

■Anonymous on Jul 18, 2023: the guy who said London is not dangerous,  it needs to be the most dangerous city in Europe. I live in Lambeth Braxton and I can say this is the jungle 3k+ crimes per month in Lambeth. And Lambeth is not even the most dangerous borough in London.  And London has had 835k crimes reported and some crimes that did not even get reported like 20k+ more.  London is not safe, don't go to North London or South London and u will be fine.

■Anonymous on Jun 30, 2023: just watch for Arabs and Blacks you will be good

■Anonymous on May 03, 2023: I don’t come from Paris but I have lived there and I can tell you that it is by far the most dangerous place in Europe. I currently live in pecking the most dangerous part of London and it is far safer then where I lived in Paris and I did not even live in one of the most dangerous places in Paris. It is also far more dangerous than any place in Italy I would know because I come from Italy and I come from the most dangerous place in Italy in the noisy dangerous area there it is also far more dangerous than sector 5 in Romania.  Again I lived there and even more dangerous than Bradley I lived there too.

■Anonymous on Feb 25, 2023: Not that dangerous, just some tourist grabbers, clearly nothing next to Marseille for exemple

■Anna on Nov 18, 2022: Well, my phone was stolen while walking near Saint Michel …stay away from these weird Blacks or Arabs and you will be fine.

■mike jojes on May 15, 2022: Ok I will add a counter narrative. I have been living in Paris for 5 years in the 18th! It is extremely peaceful. What most of the comments do not understand is that Paris is like any other urban city in the west, second, Paris is far more populous, it has 11 million in total.

■Go Cat Go on Sep 18, 2021: Romanian gypsy thieves on the trains and atms Id say for one thing, then criminal gangs in Marceille, the crazy chunnel situation for trucks because of the encampments, EU government absolutely pathetic farce!

■Anonymous on Feb 14, 2021: But assault rate in France overall, not Paris one of the highest in EU, so my opinion is that Paris neither safe or dangerous, something in-between.

■Anonymous on Feb 14, 2021: Eurostat, homicides (2015-2018) - 0.31, one of the lowest between EU capital cities, and lower, than 2015 and earlier! French people are so self-critical.

■Anonymous on Jan 01, 2021: France is a corrupt country, and we must not forget that it is a colonial country and has arbitrary policies. From the beginning, France’s policy was to attract corrupt immigrants and saboteurs from its former colonies in exchange for the exclusion of the intellectual minorities whom France considers a cultural threat. The vast majority of the immigrants are populists, religious extremists, illiterate and even nomads, and they fled to France from dictatorship and tyranny in their countries of origin and brought with them a culture of barbarism and bloody to France which strengthened their tyranny by granting rights and privileges and gave for them an environment conducive to the practice of the most horrific forms of barbarism and criminality.

France chooses the type of immigrants very carefully and does not practice anything in vain. This is France’s policy, and this type of immigrant is what France wants. Most of the Arab and African immigrants living in France do not practice these crimes out of need for money, but only out of aggression, because France gives them aid and compensation and also gives them opportunities to learn, train, and improve their economic and social conditions. But these people do not care about searching for a better life. Rather, they only care about venting the tendency of aggression and barbarism, because when they fled their dictatorial countries, they found freedom, human rights, the sympathy of the French civil society and the tolerance of the French security services. And even illegal residents, the French state deliberately leaves them while it can easily pursue and arrest them and return them to their countries.

In the end, France is reaping now the consequences of its corruption.

●Anonymous on Sep 14, 2023:Typical Chinese bot telling more lies about countries globally.Hey Fuk face chink China's economy is beyond repair the world knows it.Time for the mighty usa military to turn china into nonexistence no worries we'll deal with your country

●Anonymous on Jul 31, 2023: Deflation is good for the people but the corrupted politicians in US and Europeon union hates the deflation so much so that those corrupted politicians are persuading China to be corrupted like them though creation of inflation in China through the economist news with titles such as, "Deflation is curbing China's economic rise", etc.

It seems China is the only country that is good to her people unlike the corrupted US and Europeon union.

So it's time for the people in US and Europeon union to seek justice against the food hyperinflation created by the corrupted politicians, yes, people need revolution to kick out irresponsible thieves running their countries, especially the central bank thieves and country leader/ president thieves or else the day of people to be left with nothing are being numbered now because sooner or later their money might be more worthless than toilet paper under the leadership of those corrupted policians.

●Mark on Jun 07, 2023: I Mark moved my family from the USA for 3 years to the Russian Federation, as it is impossible to live in NY because of the increase in prices for food, heating, fuel and, of course, crowds of brazen migrants who live on welfare and rob and mock local residents, and the authorities only indulge them for votes in elections. Now we have been living in Moscow for 4 years and this city is a thousand times better than NY. No wonder UN experts recognize Moscow best metropolis in terms of quality of life! Moscow has been name the best in the world in terms of infrastructure development and quality of life according to UN-Habitat's City Prosperity Index.. Haters can write anything, but the fact remains anyway!

●Frenchman in Paris on May 22, 2023: I would label Last comment (Apr 03, 2023) as pure useless horseshit.

However, I'd tend to comment further:

- not everybody speak English in France. As Paris is very touristical, there are more people talking English/Globish but overall, we're still behind our neighbours of Germany and Switzerland for instance (not to mention Scandinavia nor the UK obviously). But probably slightly better off than in Italy, Spain or Portugal

- to be able to mumble a few words in French is a huge plus as it's highly appreciated (as with any local language anywhere in the world), beyond the "bonjour", "merci", "s'il vous plait" and "au revoir". There are a lot of mobile applications allowing to jump-start your learning process (eg Babbel, Duolingo, Busuu etc).

- in Paris, public transportation (metro, bus, RER = suburbian train system) is good & the best way to move around. Not to mention the cheapest (+ public bikes up for rent), used by everyone (so no social segregation). Also Paris is a tiny city meant for walkers (see: https://d2wwhj0amomscw.cloudfront.net/temps-parcours/WEB-A4-distances-temps-paris-marche-pied.pdf). Outside the Parisian region (Ile de France), the train system between cities is also very good, all things considered. But of course, car would be needed if you live in the outskirt of a city.

- regarding long-term visa (= more than 90 days & less than 1 year), this is relatively easy to get if you have a reason to come to France = to study, to work, or to join your family. Outside these use cases, probably way more difficult, to be honest. Probably like in a lot of other countries, US included.

- there is absolutely no grudge against Americans - we view the US as a close ally and history has proven this friendship goes both ways (from La Fayette to WW2). In hospitality though (restaurants, hotels etc) Americans are viewed as "generous" as they tend to tip like in the US (eg 10-20% tip) whereas French are cheaper - as part of the tip (service) is supposed to be included in the price you already pay by default.

●Anonymous on Apr 03, 2023: FYI French citizens despise Americans,  my wife and I stayed in France two months horrible treatment no reason at all promise. We wouldn't recommend it.

Plus Americans are charged double the price for everything.

●Anonymous on Mar 19, 2023: I'm from America. I would like to visit Paris. Does everybody there speak English? I would be willing to stay and visit for as long as 1 month. As long as everyone was nice to me. That way I could see everything. Are the people in Paris nice people? I see they have McDonalds. So food should be no problem for me. That's the same McDonalds as is here in America. Right? I was watching a video and all the people on the streets of Paris simply look charming. And attractive. Is everyone in Paris that attractive? It's amazing. And from the other videos I see Paris is so upscale. They have almost no areas that are economically challenged. They must be so well off. No wonder everybody looks so happy. I am looking forward to my visit.

●Nathalie on Mar 19, 2023: Writing from America. I dream of living in France one day. How difficult is it to get a long-term visa for non-European? Hopefully not as complicated as Britain's policies.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/nov/08/cop27-climate-summit-volodymyr-zelenskiy-ukraine-president-speech

Zelenskiy was right that not only the Ukraine war but also the corruption of Putin with which everyone in every country is suffering unbearable inflation consequently through Putin's most wicked collusion with either the Mafia OPEC or not so Putin must be disconnected for the salvation of the whole world or else Russia would be disconnected from the rest of the world which means Russia would be banned from selling anything to anyone from all other countries until Putin is stripped off of his power in Russia for good.

●Anonymous on Oct 11, 2022: There is no average salary such an open question. That depends upon your profession skills.Dont get your hopes up too high.Unless you are within a short walking distance to your employment taxi and bus fares will eat up any extra money you may have. The average rent for a studio apartment is 2,000 eur monthly unfurnished.VAT value added tax is currently 21 percent. You cannot afford living in Paris let alone the countryside it's all very expensive. Also you cannot just land in France and expect to get a good wage since you're an unknown remember that.

For the sake of independence and survival, Europe must immediately ban gas throughout Europe and the gas must be immediately replaced with other cheaper alternatives coming from such as hydropower plant, Nuclear energy, wood, coal, etc which can be independently produced in Europe without requiring dependence from untrustworthy source.

It's time to build Nuclear power plant as much as necessary in order to provide sufficient power for Europe as well as to provide the free city transportation including bus and train powered by electricity in order to discourage the public from using the oil fueled cars as the first step to permanently remove oil dependence from Russia and Russia's manipulated OPEC.

●Anonymous on Oct 08, 2020: I see that the salary is now above 2,500 EUR which is fair.

However property prices in city center (1 to 11 districts) are above 13,000 EUR according to the notary monthly report of September 2020 and not 12,000 EUR as I can see now. It should be corrected.

The 6e arrondissement or district average price is 15,000 EUR for example : https://notairesdugrandparis.fr/fr/carte-des-prix

●Anonymous on Jun 22, 2020: 2,300 net salary average (after benefits and income tax) is not correct.

In 2016, the average salary was 2370 according to official figures : https://www.salairemoyen.com/en/departement-75-Paris.html

Now in 2020 it should be at least 2,500.

●Anonymous on Mar 08, 2020: Is Paris a good city for someone who wants to study Geography in the university then work and live there?

I think 99 percent of buildings are very old and this is a negative part for me. also structure of the city is very old too.

what's your idea? help me. thanks.- Arthur

Hi Arthur, your comment sounds a bit odd, i dont know where you come from but most of the big European cities are very old, so indeed the real estate is de facto old... it's usually what gives its charm to these cities. And the truth is, outside the historical center, some poorer or ex-industrial parts of Paris and its suburbs are now giant playground for real estate promoters and architects so big chunks of the city (and around) are getting renewed completely, have a look on the internet if you want to know more. This is part of a giant project that will span over 30 years called "Grand Paris" (Greater Paris) and also in sight of the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in 2024.

About the prices, the biggest problem is -as everyone below already stated- the rents which are huge compared to the salaries, and when you're a student it's even more complicated.

Talking about the structure of the city, i dont know what is and old structure compared to a new structure... each city has a different layout so what did you mean exactly ?

I think 99 percent of buildings are very old and this is a negative part for me. also structure of the city is very old too.

what's your idea? help me. thanks.

Continuing from previous post.

So to make it simple , one salary going on living and expenses, and another salary can pay of credit of apartment car , and holidays ... This is most real picture ..

●Minja on Jan 18, 2020: Paris housing is quite expensive in town. Suburbs cost less but then also class of people change , and drop in culture , cleanliness of streets and overall feeling is that you're far away from mighty west ..

Salary is around 2000€ , but still there are 1300€ low or 3000€ higher , depending a lot of position and work experience. To say , no any professional higher education , you will be around 1500-1800€. Knowing some skills or do example plumbing , electricity , heating , you will get higher salary if you do your own business and open company. If you speak both English and French this is good and can open door to many jobs like client support , working on airport , and other companies that need daily contact on English , then you can expect 2000+ euros again depends on your previous experience.

When you have 2 workers in home both to say earning about 4000€ , and you are living 30 km from Paris , you can find equiped apartment for 700-1200 euros and then for food and bills you will spend around 300-400 for food , and around 120-170 for bills all included. So let's say you find apartment of 40m2 for 1200 with bills included , you pay nice medium quality food 400 per month , transportation if there is no car , just public 150 that's already

Sorry, but that is wrong.

Average net salary in provincial France (everywhere except Paris) is 2250€ netto.

So of course it is higher in Paris.

Website shows net salary after tax:

I don't know what extreme taxes you are talking about. I live in Germany and tax rate on my gross salary is a lot higher. After that, my health expenditures are less reimbursed in Germany than in France, unemployment money payout is more restricted than in France, my income protection is not made on a company basis like in France so that I have to pay from my own pocket otherwise I don't get anything after 6 month of illness in Germany, and retirement age is 68 in Germany (vs. 62 in France).

So yes, I think it is fair to pay those "EXTREME" taxes you are so much complaining about.
