PEOPLE, BUT INWARDLY YOUR HEARTS ARE

📖 "People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."- First Samuel 16, verse 7 

Before we pray, let's first take a moment to listen to God's Word, and then we'll pray together. 

 Some of the most dangerous spiritual problems are the ones that look holy on the outside, but stay wounded on the inside. You can look "fine," sound "strong," and still be fighting private battles that no one sees. 

But Jesus never came to help you manage an image. He came to heal your heart. 

Here and now, you'll sit with Jesus' serious warning in Matthew 23, verses 25 to 28.

(²⁵ “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. ²⁶ Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.

²⁷ “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. ²⁸ In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.)

— where Jesus Christ exposes a life that focuses on outward cleanliness while ignoring inward corruption. This is not meant to shame you. It's meant to rescue you. Because a faith that turns into performance will always leave your soul tired. 

✅ If you've been living for people's approval 

✅ If you've been comparing yourself to others to avoid facing what's inside 

✅ If you've been serving, worshiping, and smiling while feeling empty in private 

 ¶ This time of study and prayer is for you. 

Almighty God is not asking you to pretend. He is inviting you to be honest. 

The difference between spiritual pride and real righteousness is simple: one wants to be seen, and the other wants mercy. 

That's why Jesus lifted up the humble cry in Luke 18, verses 10 to 14, and why David prayed, "Create in me a clean heart" in Psalm 51, verse 10 

You don't have to clean yourself up before coming to Jesus Christ. You come to Him so He can cleanse you, restore you, and make your private life match your public confession. 

§ There is freedom when you stop acting and start surrendering. 

 Let's pray together - asking Lord Jesus Christ to wash you today, the inside first, purify your motives, break the fear of people, and make your heart truly clean.

Respected reader, before we pray, let's first take a moment to listen to God's word and then we'll pray together. 

Some of the most dangerous spiritual problems are the ones that look clean on the outside. 

Jesus spoke directly to that kind of life in Matthew 23 : 25 to 28. He says, "What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees, hypocrites! 

For you are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy, full of greed and self-indulgence. 

You blind Pharisee. 

First wash the inside of the cup and the dish, and then the outside will become clean, too.

What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees, hypocrites? For you are like whitewashed tombs, beautiful on the outside, but filled on the inside with dead people's bones and all sorts of impurity. Outwardly, you look like righteous people, but inwardly your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness. 

 Here Jesus was exposing a dangerous pattern. People who care more about appearance than purity, reputation than repentance, or care more about being admired than being transformed. 

 It is easy to hear that and think that is about the Pharisees, not me. 

 But if you are honest, you know the struggle is closer than you want to admit. 

Most people do not announce what is happening inside the heart. You can worship with others and still feel hidden. You can serve faithfully and still carry secret battles. You can post encouraging words while your private thoughts are heavy. This is why Jesus Christ's words matter so much. 

Jesus Christ is trying to save you from a life that looks clean on the outside but stays sick within. 

A believer can slowly drift into self-righteousness without noticing. 

You are either a true believer, make-believer or unbeliever. 

Self-righteousness often shows up as comparison. 

It makes you feel morally above others so you do not have to face what is wrong in you. 

It makes you point at someone else's weakness so you can avoid your own. It makes you crave approval from people. 

And when your faith becomes a performance, your soul becomes tired because you are always acting instead of healing. 

This is why scripture keeps reminding you that God sees the heart. 

1st Samuel 16:7 says, "People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." 

That should bring both conviction and comfort.  Conviction because you cannot hide from him. 

Comfort because you do not have to hide from him. 

You can stop pretending and start being honest. 

3:25 Jesus gave a clear picture of this in a parable that cuts straight through pride. 

 In Luke 18: verses 10 to 14, Jesus Christ describes two men who went to pray. One was a Pharisee and one was a tax collector. The Pharisee stood apart and thanked God that he was not like other people. He listed his fasting and his giving almost as if prayer was a stage and God was his audience. 

 But the tax collector stood at a distance, could not even lift his eyes and cried out, "God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Then Jesus Christ said something shocking. The tax collector went home justified, not the Pharisee, because those who humble themselves will be exalted.  

That story shows you the difference between two kinds of hearts. 

One wants to be seen, the other wants mercy. 

One is busy presenting proof, the other is simply honest. 

 And the one who was honest received what the other could not because God does not respond to proud religion the way he responds to humble repentance. 

 So take a quiet moment today and let this question search you. 

 Are you living for an audience or are you living for God? 

 Are you doing spiritual things so people will call you strong or are you letting Jesus Christ make you clean? 

 This is about whether your private life is being shaped by the presence of Christ or whether your public life is just being polished by fear of people. 

 God desires truth in the inward places. 

 God wants your inside washed first because when the heart is changed, the life of Christ follows. 

 That is why David prayed Psalm 51:10, "Create in me a clean heart. oh God."  David did not ask for better excuses or better hiding. He asked for cleansing. 

And that is the right prayer for you, too, because your greatest need is not to look holy, but to be made whole. 

 Sometimes the hardest part is admitting what is inside. But that is also the doorway to freedom. 

 Hebrews 4:12 says, "The word of God judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." 

 God's Word is meant to examine you. And when it exposes something, it is not doing it to destroy you. It is doing it to bring you into the light where healing happens. 

 You do not have to clean yourself up before coming to Jesus Christ.  You come to him because you cannot clean yourself up. Jesus is the one who washes. 

 He is the one who forgives.

 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 

 Notice the promise is not only forgiveness but cleansing. 

God does not just cover what you did. He changes what you are becoming. 

And as you grow, you must remember that pride is not a small issue. Pride is what drives self-righteousness. 

Pride is what makes you hide. 

Pride is what makes you defend sin instead of surrendering it. But God gives grace to the humble. 

James 4:6 reminds you of that and it leads into the path of victory, humility, submission, and a clean heart. So ask Jesus to wash your inside. 

Ask Jesus Christ to purify your motives. 

Ask Jesus to free you from the need to be praised.

Ask Jesus to make your private life match your public confession. 

Choose to live with an audience of One. 

Because the goal is not to impress people, but to know Christ, to walk closely with Him, and to be real before the God who already sees you and still loves you. 

Now, let's take a moment to pray together.

🙏🏽 Lord Jesus, you see everything. 

You see my thoughts before I speak, my motives before l act, and my desires even when I hide them behind good behavior. 

So today, I ask you for help. 

Help me seek your approval. 

Help me live with a clean heart and a pure spirit. 

Help me love your presence more than applause. 

Help me desire mercy more than recognition. 

 Lord, I confess that it is easy for me to slip into wanting to be noticed. 

 Sometimes I do the right things, but deep down I want to be praised for them. 

 Sometimes I serve, but I secretly hope someone will mention my name. 

Sometimes I worship, but I still worry about how I appear. 

 Forgive me for every time I have cared more about the outside than the inside. 

 Forgive me for every time pride has tried to sit on the throne of my heart. 

 Please remove from me any selfish ambition and any hunger to be celebrated. 

 Teach me to be satisfied with being known by you. 

 Your word reminds me that salvation is not a trophy l earned. It is a gift I received. 

Ephesians 2: verses 8 to10 says, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves.  It is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are his workmanship,  created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."

Lord Jesus, I thank you for grace. 

Thank you that you saved me when I could not save myself. Thank you for your cross of Calvary where you carried my sin, my shame, and my failures. 

You paid a painful price so l could be forgiven and made new. 

 So today, Lord, I reject boasting. 

I reject spiritual pride. 

I reject the mindset that tries to prove my worth by performance.  

I do not want to live as if your love must be earned. 

I want to live as someone who is deeply loved, forgiven, and deeply changed.

Lord,  You say l am your workmanship and that means you are stil shaping me. You are still correcting me and cleansing me. 

 So I surrender my heart to your hands again. 

 Lord, I ask you to search me and expose anything in me that is not pleasing to you. 

 Psalm 139: verses 23- 24 says, "Search me, oh God, and know my heart.  Try me and know my thoughts and see if there be any grievous way in me and lead me in the way everlasting. 

 Father, I do not want hidden sin living in my private life while my public life looks fine. I do not want secret compromise to steal my confidence in prayer. I do not want double-mindedness to weaken my fellowship with you. 

 Lord Jesus, keep me close to you because without you I have no strength. 

 John 15:5 says, "l am the vine. You are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit. For apart from me, you can do nothing. "

Lord, I believe that apart from you, I can act religious and still be empty. 

Apart from you, I can speak truth and still lack love. 

Apart from you, I can look clean and still be struggling inside. So, teach me to abide. Teach me to stay near. 

Lord, teach me to depend on you daily. Help me fight sin with humility. 

Lord, help me wage war against temptation, not in my own strength, but by your spirit and your word. 

l ask you to guard my heart from self-righteousness. 

I do not want to look down on others just to feel better about myself. 

Your word warns me that pride ruins people. 

So keep me low at the foot of your cross where I remember that I need mercy every day. 

Lord, you also teach me what true righteousness looks like. It is not a show. It is surrender.

It is written in Matthew 16 24-25, Jesus says, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it But whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." 

 Lord Jesus, I want to follow you like that. 

Teach me to deny myself. 

Teach me to put your will above my comfort. 

Teach me to take up my cross even when it costs me. 

I choose to lay down selfish interests. 

I choose to lay down the need to be praised and the desire to be seen. 

I want my life to point to you, Lord. 

Sometimes I fear people's opinions more than I fear drifting from you. Set me free from that trap. 

Proverbs 29:25 says, "The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe." 

Father, I want that safety. 

I want the freedom of trusting you more than I trust human approval. 

Galatians 1:10 says, "If I was still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. "

 Lord, I want to be your servant, not a servant of public praise. Give me a clean heart. 

Psalm 51:10 says, "Create in me a clean heart, oh God, and renew a right spirit within me. 

Lord, create in me what I cannot create in myself.

Renew my spirit when it becomes tired. 

Restore my love for holiness. 

Restore my love for truth. 

Restore my love for secret obedience. 

Teach me to serve with the right motive. 

Colossians 3 verse 23 says, "Whatever you do, work heartily as for the Lord and not for men." 

Lord, I  receive that. 

Let my worship be for you. 

Let my giving be for you. 

Let my praying be for you. 

Let my obedience be for you. 

Even when no one notices, let my heart stay faithful because you see. 

Father, give me a humble spirit.

Philippians 2: verses 3 to 4 says, "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others. 

LORD, shape my character like Jesus Christ. 

Teach me to love people without using them to build my image. 

 Teach me to honor others without needing to compete. 

 Teach me to walk softly before you with a sincere heart. Know my heart, Lord, and make it pure. 

Let my life be devoted to you. 

Let my mind be committed to following you. 

 Let my desire be to exalt your name always. 

 More of you in me and less of me in the way.

 Use my life, Lord, but let it always bring you glory. 

In the mighty and precious name of Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
