Colon Cancer from Singapore
Posted on December 19, 2010 by cancer care
Hi Dr. Teo,
I was told of how you have helped many cancer patients recover from their illness. My 78 years old mum was diagnosed with colon cancer a year ago but refused to have the big tumour in her colon removed. She has been seeking TCM treatment but lately her condition has deteriorated. She also suffers from hardening of the liver. Right now she gets severe diarrhea very often. Her legs are also swollen. She complains of gastric pain and her abdomen is bloated. (BTW, she had stomach cancer 15 years ago but had since recovered after the operation).
We thought of bringing her to see you but her family doctor feels that she is not fit to travel. We live in Singapore. She has just had her blood test done at NUH in Singapore and we are waiting for the result.
I would appreciate your advice on what to do next. As there are Christmas and New Year holidays coming, we need to know if you will still continue to see patients.
I would greatly appreciate a prompt reply from you.
Best regards
Reply: I don’t think I can help much at this stage — why don’t you continue with the TCM treatment that you have been doing ….Chris

Colon-Liver Cancer: Surgery & Chemo plus Insurance Funding Runs Dry – Yet No Cure
Posted on January 16, 2011 by cancer care
Dr Chris Teo,
My name is L from KL & I was referred by my ex-colleague that you have vast experiences in assisting cancer survivor to use alternative medicine to cure their sickness.
My Father (aged 64) is the cancer patient. He contracted Colon cancer in 2009 with the symptom of purging bloody motion & without experience, plus worry he went for a surgery to remove the contaminated part & was offered oral chemo in G Hospital in KL.
However, after 1 year treatment the cancer cell spread to his liver, again with the in-experience we went for a few Oncology suggestions – some advised to go for operation to remove part of the liver followed by chemo treatment or start straight on chemo as his age may not able to go for the operations.
Finally, we went for the chemo treatment in Hospital S. And with the Insurance coverage we were able to go for 6 cycles of chemo with Xeloda. But the cancer cell still grow in his liver & it’s now stage 4. We were advised to go for oral chemo & higher grade of chemo treatment – Avastin & Xeliri to control the spread.
We went for the chemo but after 1 cycle we have to stop it & seek for more advice as he felt the post treatment is unbearable, e.g. hair drops, no appetite, restless, etc & also financially we are not able to cope it anymore as the Insurance coverage has crossed the budget for 2010.
In view of that, we’re now seeking for alternative medicine to cure his sickness & we hope to get your attention, to seek your help – give us some brief advisc & grant us an appointment.
Thus, I’ll be Greatly Appreciated if you could grant me & my father an appointment to seek your kind assistance.

Love is a great thing, an altogether good gift, ...
SINGAPORE
Farewell to Dr Balaji
Balaji's son draws moving portrait of a romantic family man
'My dad was my hero'
Hundreds of grassroots leaders and residents from Dr Balaji's Cheng San-Seletar ward lined the road outside Cheng San Community Club yesterday afternoon as the cortege left the CC for Mandai Crematorium. Some came in wheelchairs, while some others came pushing prams.
TEARS gave way to smiles on many faces at the funeral of Dr Balaji Sadasivan yesterday, when his son provided a little-known picture of a man who lived life with love and gusto.
But above all, he loved his family, said his son Dharma, 28, in a moving eulogy punctuated with stories that showed his father as a romantic at heart and a big fan of rock 'n' roll music.
He would play songs by Michael Jackson, Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Bee Gees when Mr Dharma visited his Gleneagles clinic as a boy.
'My uncle... told me that when they were younger, my dad wanted to be like Jimi Hendrix,' he added with a smile, referring to the iconic guitarist of the 1960s.
His eulogy, coming after three sombre tributes, gave a lift to the solemn hush at Funeral Halls 1 and 2 in Mandai Crematorium.
The halls were filled to the brim with friends, colleagues, grassroots leaders, doctors and family members bidding farewell to the Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, who had died of colon cancer on Monday,27Sept2010, at age 55.
Love is a great thing, an altogether good gift, the only thing that makes burdens light and bears all that is hard with ease. Love carries a weight without feeling it, and makes all that is bitter sweet and pleasant to the taste in life. Lead on...with love..is the mother of all principles of leadership.

RUNX3 gene discovery
Professor Yoshiaki Ito discovers that a malfunction in the RUNX3 gene can lead to the development of gastric and colon cancers.
THE GENE DETECTIVE. Singapore offered Professor Yoshiaki Ito a chance to continue his gene research after he reached retirement age in Japan in 2002.
Prof Ito, then 63, decided to move to the Republic of Singapore. Before the relocation, he was already famed for being one of the discoverers of the RUNX3 "family" of genes in 1993 at Kyoto University.
His team found out that if these genes malfunction, they often cause cancer. What cause malfunction in the first place in those genes?
Professor Ito took his research a step further when he joined the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore, and Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology.
Building on his earlier findings, he identified the RUNX3 gene as being key in the development in gastric and colon cancers. Understanding this gene could lead to removal of pre-cancerous tissue before it develops further.
For the landmark discovery and his work on gene research, he was awarded the Singapore President's Science Award. The Singapore-President's Science and Technology Awards represent the highest honours conferred on those individuals who have made outstanding contributions.
"We have to continue to study how the gene works. It prevents normal cells from becoming cancer, " said Professor Ito, now 71. " A malfunction in this gene causes cancer and that usually occurs at a very early stage in the development of cancer ... If we can find out when this malfunction occurs, we could remove that pre-cancer tissue before it becomes cancer." Did Dr Balaji'RUNX3 gene malfunctioned?
Professor Ito, who was credited for drawing in researchers from around the world to Singapore, said that Singapore has the edge over Japan when it comes to attracting top-class scientists due to the use of English.
His work in the Oncology Research Institute in the National University of Singapore, and the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine helped lay a solid foundation for the establishment of Cancer Science Institute of Singapore.
Professor Ito also played an important role as one of the programme leaders in the Singapore Gastric Cancer Consortium, which was awarded the Translational and Clinical Research Flagship Programme.

More tha 272,000 women in poor countries died prematurely of cervical cancer in year 2007, accounting for 85% of the global total.
Cases of breast cancer in these same countries is also growing at up to 10 times the global average - up to 5% per year.

No. 1 Cancer Killer in Singapore !
SINGAPORE: Colon cancer, the No. 1 cancer killer in Singapore, used to affect those over 50 years old, but doctors are reporting an increasing trend of younger people diagnosed with the disease.
26—year—old Alan Jeff Lim started to experience problematic bowel movements last April. It wasn’t till three months later that doctors figured out what was wrong.
"They initially ruled out cancer because of my age. I just went for a lot of tests like urine, stool and blood tests," said Lim.
An endoscopy finally revealed that he had Stage 4 colorectal cancer and needed to have his entire colon removed.
Lim, who is recovering well, is not alone. Doctors estimate that one in every 20 patients who suffer from colon cancer is below the age of 40.
Dr Ang Peng Tiam, medical director, Parkway Cancer Centre, said: "We understand that colon cancer is related to diet. In the more affluent countries where there is a higher fat and meat content, and low fibre content, these groups of people are more prone to developing colorectal cancer.
"It is difficult to understand why the young are also getting it. We seem to see a higher number of younger individuals with colorectal cancer."
Doctors said the lack of exercise and stress, which lowers the immune system, could be contributing factors. Warning signs include blood in stools or a change in bowel habits.
Every year, about 1,400 Singaporeans are diagnosed with colon cancer, making it the most common cancer here. To encourage more to come forward for early detection, the Singapore Cancer Society is offering free screening tests to 30,000 people.
Similarly, the Parkway Cancer Centre plans to give out free test kits and screen about 1,000 people at Raffles Place next week. Based on the response, it will then determine the number of kits to give out at Singapore Post Centre and VivoCity.
Doctors generally recommend that those above 50 years old should go for regular screening as they are in the high—risk group.
Let the people know about water-cure protocol first.
Mountains of database of scientific research on diet and cancer and peer-reviewed studies performed over long period, had clearly points to the connection between the way we eat and our tendency to cancer. You have academic interest in this subject, then you can learn from the database available: love to learn the truth .
The wise tongue is the tree of life.
To diminish the risk of cancer and all other diseases of present civilization, and the abuse that our over-indulgent cuisine-diet causes to our environment, we must all now rethink the way we eat as a matter of urgency.
How to Change the Way You Eat
Some people, given the information about the need to change their way of eating, go away and achieve this in one fell swoop. I have known people who have learned about the role of diet in preventing cancer and have gone round their kitchen with a black bin bag, emptied into it half the contents of their refrigerators, freezers and kitchen cabinets, cupboards and started their new way of eating the very same day !
But, this is a small minority only, because for most of us changing the way we eat (for the better health) is very difficult due to lack of information about what to buy and how to go about preparing it. Just go raw with the food seems strange for many of us who had been indoctrinated and addicted to cooked food since birth.
There are also time and money considerations, and emotional investment in our food and the way we eat (not to mention sabotage, insult, however well meant, from our families and friends).
The most important thing is that the change is lasting and that you will not set yourself up for failure and stress.distress, which would, of course, be entirely counterproductive to your overall state of well being.
It is therefore helpful if you are as well prepared as you can be before making the change, by anticipating your need for support, sufficient real information, clarity and constant resolution and motivation about the the exact approach you are going to follow, and SPECIFIC advice about your own personal needs if you have medical problems affecting your eating, digestion, weight or excretion.
Raw fresh fruits and vegetation not only provide fibres which many doctors talk about, but the oxalic acid found in them which the body used to stimulate the intestine peristalsis to transfer the digested food along the colon right unto the 'exit'-anus.
Recommended Foods
1.Whole foods means non-industry processed foods: All food should be eaten whole, with nothing added(enriched) or taken away - e.g. wholemeal bread, brown rice (white polish rice is bad for health in the long term basis), brown flour ( white-bleached flour also is a main culprit in health maintenance).
2. Fresh fruit and vegetables (not tinned or frozen) should be eaten with every meal, especially green, leafy vegetables - e.g. cabbage, broccoli, sprouts. Aim to have a minimum of five servings of fruit and vegetables each day. No maximum.
3. Raw food - vegetables, fruit and raw cereals, raw nuts and raw seeds. Not roasted. Try to eat some daily as salads, fruit salads, or freshly prepared fruit juices - e.g. a mixture of carrot, apple and beetroot.
4. Organically grown food, as available and affordable.
5. Rich nutrients fibre - e.g. beans, pulses, lentils, vegetables and cereals.
6.Cold-pressed oils (extra virgin olive oil) for dressings .
7. Variety : Avoid depending on nay one food excessively.
Avoid as Much as Possible (especially if the products is intensively farmed, factory-farmed)
1. Red meat - beef, pork, lamb, veal bacon, kidneys, liver, salamis and meat pates.
2. Dairy produce - cheese, butter, cream, yoghurt and milk (use soya products instead, Non-Genetic Modified soya beans)
3. White sugar cubes, white sugar.
4. Factory produced salt. (use sea salt unrefined)
5. Caffeine - tea, coffee, chocolate, cola, alcohol, nicotine and non-prescribed drugs e.g. pain-killer, aspirin, paracetamol.
6. Food which has been stored fro long periods, irradiated , dried, processed, microwaved, or repeatedly reheated.
