Florence Scovel Shinn (1871-1940)

Florence Scovel Shinn was a woman ahead of her 
time. To many, she is considered to be among the 
likes of James Allen, the author of “As a Man 
Thinketh”, Wallace D.Wattles, the author of “The 
Science of Getting Rich” and Napoleon Hill who 
wrote the classic “Think and Grow Rich”.

Miss Shinn was an artist, an author and a meta-
physics teacher in New York in the early part of 
the 20th century. Her books are remarkable and 
revolutionary in her times. They are profound, 
full of wisdom and have inspired thousands of 
people for several decades.

She was an outstanding proponent of the power of
thoughts.

She taught that life is a game and in order to play 
it well, one must learn to understand the universal 
laws that govern it. She showed her students and 
readers how to win health, prosperity and happi-
ness by mastering the game. By sharing real-life 
stories, she illustrates how positive attitudes and 
affirmations invariably succeed in making one
a winner in life - able to control life’s conditions 
and release abundance through knowledge of 
spiritual law. 

Florence Scovel Shinn had the ability to explain 
her success principles and how they work in an 
entertaining and easy-to-read style. She can be 
considered one of last century’s most popular 
success teachers.

Florence Scovel Shinn was born on September 24,
1871, in Camden, New Jersey to Alden Cortlandt 
Scovel and Emily Hopkinson. She had an older 
sister and a younger brother.

Florence was educated at Friends Central School in
Philadelphia. She later studied art at the 
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1889 to 
1897. While there, she met Everett Shinn, a painter 
of impressionistic canvases and realistic murals. 
They married shortly after Florence graduated from 
the art academy.

The Shinns moved to New York where both 
pursued their separate careers, Everett in the theatre 
while Florence did illustrations for children’s 
literature in magazines and books.

In 1925, Florence decided to publish her first book 
“The Game of Life and How to Play It”. After 
unsuccessfully finding a publisher for her work, 
she published it herself.
Her second book,“Your Word is Your Wand” 
followed in 1928 and her final book “The Secret 
Door to Success” was published in 1940 shortly 
before her death on October 17, 1940. 
A fourth book,“The Power of the Spoken Word”
is a compendium of her notes, gathered by one 
of her students and published posthumously in 1945.

PEACE AND PROSPERITY

Peace be within thy walls and Prosperity within thy Palaces." In this statement from the 122nd Psalm we find that peace and prosperity go hand in hand. People who are manifesting the appearance of lack are in a state of fear and confusion. They are not wide-awake to their good and miss leads and opportunities. A peaceful person is a wide-awake person. He sees clearly and acts quickly. He never misses a trick.

I have seen people discordant and unhappy changed completely. I will give an example in order to prove the working of the law. A woman came to me in a state of abject sorrow. She looked the part. Her eyes were blurred from constant weeping. Her face was haggard and drawn. The man she loved had left her and she was certainly the most demagnetized creature I had ever seen. I noticed the shape of her face— large eyes, far apart and a pointed chin. For many years I was an artist and have got into the habit of looking at people from an artist's standpoint. As I looked at this forlorn creature, I thought, her face has the modeling of a Botticelli. I often see Rembrandts, Sir Joshua Reynolds, etc., in people I meet. I spoke the Word for this woman and gave her my book, The Game of Life and How to Play it. A week or two afterwards, in walked a very dashing person. Her eyes were beautiful and she was very pretty. I thought, her face has the modeling of a Botticelli. Suddenly I realized it was the same woman! She was happy and carefree! What had happened? Our talk and the book had brought her peace.

"Peace be within your walls!" Your "walls" are your consciousness. Jesus Christ emphasized peace and rest. "Come to me all ye that are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest." He was speaking of the Christ within, your superconscious mind, where there are no burdens and no battles. The doubts and fears and negative pictures are in the subconscious. When I was returning from California some years ago, I came in an aeroplane. In the high altitudes I had a queer detached feeling. In that high altitude we are at peace with ourselves and with the whole world. In the high altitudes the fields are always white with the harvest. Only the emotions keep you from reaping your harvest of success, happiness and abundance. We read in the Bible "I will restore to you the years the locusts have eaten." We might well paraphrase it and say, "I will restore to you the years the emotions have ruined." People are rocked with doubts and fears, bringing failure, unhappiness and dis-ease.

I read in a daily paper that the laws of the mind are being generally recognized and understood. It has been found that the fear of failure is the greatest of all fears, and at least seventy-five per cent of those examined psychologically have this failure fear. Of course, this may refer to failure of health, failure in business, finances, love, success, etc. Other important fears are fear of the dark, fear of being alone, fear of animals. Some people fear they will be misunderstood, while others fear they are losing mental control. Constant and continued fear affects the glands — interferes with digestion and is usually associated with distressing nervous symptoms. It robs the body of health and destroys happiness.

Fear is man's worst enemy for you attract what you fear. It is Faith turned upside down. It is really Faith in evil instead of good. "Why are ye fearful! Oh! Ye of little faith?" The fearless, unfettered mind attracts to itself all good. Whatever you desire or require is already on your pathway. "Before ye call I have answered."

Suppose we paraphrase the Scriptures and say: "Whatever you desire or require is already planted on your pathway." Often a new word will give you sudden realization. If you are in need of any information, it will be given you. A friend told me of this surprising working of the law. She was translating an old Italian manuscript on the life of an early Persian ruler. No books in English had been written on the subject. She wondered why the publishers were holding back its publication. One evening she was eating her dinner at the Automat. She fell into a conversation with a man at the same table. She told him of the work she was doing and of the translation of the early Italian manuscript. He suddenly volunteered the information; "You'll have a hard time getting it published because this Persian ruler's ideas conflict with the ideas of the present government." He was a student and scholar and knew more than she did on the subject. Her question was answered and at the Automat. Such information could, usually, be gleaned only in the archives of some public library. God works in unexpected places His wonders to perform. She had worried about it, but when she was peaceful and happy and unconcerned, the information sailed in over a calm sea.

"Our feet shall stand within thy gates, 0 Jerusalem." Jerusalem stands for peace and the feet for understanding. So understanding always brings us within the gates of peace. How can a person attain peace when his whole life is in a turmoil? By taking an affirmation. You cannot control your thought but you can control your words, and eventually the word wins out. Most people have attracted inharmonious conditions because they have been fighting their battles and carrying their burdens. We must learn to get out of God's way so that He can harmonize or adjust the situation. The word "harmonize" is a very good one, for I have seen crooked places made straight, and adjustments made, that no human mind could have thought of. All that the Kingdom affords is yours, if you will give Infinite Intelligence right of way, for it has already supplied a lavish supply for every demand. But It must be fully trusted. If you doubt or fear, you lose your contact with this Supreme Force. So if you are filled with doubts and fears, it is necessary to do something to show your faith. "Faith without works (or action) is dead." Active Faith impresses the subconscious with expectance and you keep your contact with Universal Intelligence. Just as Wall Street watches the market, we must watch our Faith market. Often the Faith market is down. Sometimes it goes down and down until a crash comes: some unhappy situation which we could have prevented. We realize we followed reason instead of intuition.

A woman told me how she had several definite leads not to follow a certain course. In spite of this she followed the reasoning mind and great unhappiness developed from it. Intuition is our unerring guide. Practice following it in little things, then you will trust it in big things. I have a friend who is very intuitive. She sometimes calls up and says: "I've just had a hunch to call you up so I thought I would find out what it is about." Invariably I have some mission for her.

We are indeed living magic lives — guided, protected and provided for. All fear would be banished forever with a realization of this amazing system the Universal has provided for man. He would be unmoved by adverse appearances, knowing as the early Hebrews knew, "that Jehovah goes before and every battle is won."

A friend told me a very interesting story. A man in the paper business in Kalamazoo, Michigan, has given away a thousand of my books to his employees. He went into business on a small capital and gave up cold judgment and reasoning. He has built up a twelve million dollar business by following leads and hunches. All his workers have a knowledge of metaphysical law.

Another man who built his business upon the law of giving and receiving met with the same amazing success. He came to Philadelphia with a little money and bought a magazine, an old publication. His desire was to give the people a great deal for a very small price. He believed in the law of giving. It proved to be one of the most popular magazines. He gave the public the best in the way of stories and illustrations and paid well for them. The more he gave, the more he received — millions poured in!! "Peace be within thy walls and prosperity within thy palaces!! Peace and prosperity go hand in hand. "Great peace have they that love Thy law and nothing shall offend them." The lady on the phone had a question.

"I've been giving money away for years and I 

haven't seen my own prosperity grow at all. 

What am I doing wrong?"

"Where are you giving money?"

 "To my local church."

"Why are you giving them money?" I asked.

"They need it."

"How do you feel when you give it to them?"

 "Like I am helping them out of a hole."

"But how do you really feel when you give them money?"

There was a moment of silence.

 "Well, it's a pain," she admitted. "I cringe 

when I write them a check."

Not good.

"If you feel lousy when you give money, then 

you are associating money with bad feelings," I explained. 

"You probably don't want to attract more bad

money, either."

"Wow. I never thought of it that way."

 "And if you give because someone asked for it 
or even pleaded for it, then you are reinforcing 
need," I explained. "In order for you to experience 
increased wealth, you want to give money 
wherever it makes you feel good to do so. In other 
words,giving to someone who needs it is a noble 
thing to do. Do it. But that ís not the principle 
I'm talking about here."

"I get it!" she said. 

I couldn't help but think some other part of

the universe was helping her understand 

what I couldn't explain.

"What did you get?" I asked.

"I've been keeping the church in a begging mode," she said.

"My heart wants to give money to wherever I 
feel spiritual nourishment. Sometimes that's 
my church. Sometimes it's not."

 "You got it!" I said.

And there you have it.

 You can give money to any causes you like. I've 
helped The Red Cross, the Make-A-Wish 
Foundation, cancer funds, and more.

But I didn't expect my finances to increase from 
that giving. 

That generosity was helping, yes, but 
not necessarily activating spiritual law. 
The spiritual law of financial income seems to 
happen when you give money freely to 
wherever you get your spiritual nourishment, 
with a small expectation that somehow, 

some way, some day, your finances will increase as a result. 

Giving to worthy causes might activate the law if 
you feel you received spiritual nourishment from
those causes. But if you didn't, and you give 
anyway, you are probably just helping people 
in need.

That, of course, is noble. I say do it.

Again, the subject of this book is the greatest 
money-making secret in history. And you 
activate that secret when you give freely, 
joyously, to wherever you currently get 
spiritual nourishment and nurturing.

The following is a sample of how to use hypnosis to tap into the Source of Mind Power to attract money and a steady flow of prosperity. The best way to use this script is to record yourself speaking it and then listen to the recording. By following a recording, you are able to allow yourself to drift into deeper levels of mind, closer to the Source of Power. When you use your recording, you will want to set aside plenty of time to focus on the words of the script and visualize what they are describing. Now, I want you to continue relaxing your body. Let all of your muscles in your arms and legs go completely limp and loose. Imagine that you are a rag doll, floating on a cloud, or in a raft on a softly swelling ocean. Lots of open space.
Focus now on your breathing. Take nice, deep breaths. Slow and easy. Breath in to a count of 3. One, two, three. Breath out to a count of 5. One, two, three, four, five. Do this several more times. Breathe in to a count of 3. Breathe out to a count of 5. Breathe in to a count of 3. Breathe out to a count of 5. Yes. You're doing very well here. With each breath you take, you are getting more and more relaxed. And as your body relaxes, the focus of your mind improves.
Now that you are completely relaxed physically, we are going to start working on the spiritual level. If you have not already done so, I want you to close your eyes. You are now going deep within yourself, to a very safe place. You are now moving closer and closer to your spiritual source of Power. The closer you get to your spiritual source of Power, the better you will feel. This is a very pleasant, enjoyable experience. As I speak to you now, you are moving closer and closer to your source of spiritual Power. You may imagine a staircase in front of you leading down into your inner self. This will be a safe and secure staircase, one that is obviously built with care and pride. There will also be a soft glow of light on this staircase. See the staircase now.

There are 21 steps on this staircase. I will count the steps as we go down into the deepest parts of your inner self. With each step you take, you will feel a greater sense of peace, serenity, and love. Let's start going down now. We start with 21 steps to the bottom. As you take the first step, there are now 20 steps to the bottom. Take another step and it becomes 19. 18. 17. Taking each step brings you closer to the source of your spiritual Power. 16. 15. 14. 13. 12. You definitely feel safe and secure in this place. Every time you breathe in, you are taking more and more Power into your being, and each time you breathe out, that Power is becoming a part of you. This Power that you are breathing in is transforming you, giving you more abilities and Powers.
Soon, you notice that one of your new abilities is a sense of connection to everything in the universe. More and more information is available to your mind. You are getting smarter, wiser, and better at making judgments and analyzing information. This will come in handy when you want to check out new business deals and money making opportunities. You will have an uncanny sense of what will be profitable and want to avoid. You understand now that the best way to make money is to offer the world something it needs. You understand that when you offer the world a good thing at a good price, you can make as much money as you want. And with each breath that you take, this connection with the universe is getting stronger and more reliable. Breathe in even more Power and let this new ability become a permanent part of you.
Now, you are noticing another new ability. You are able to focus your mind much better than you were ever able to before. You can make firm decisions and not be distracted by unimportant details. This new ability will be very important when working in business and creating unending prosperity. This new ability will also be important when you are directing Power to create specific conditions. And with each breath that you take, your ability to focus your mind gets better and better. Breathe in more Power and let this enhancement become a permanent part of you.
While we are here now, we will also use the unlimited Power that is available to you to create a money magnet that will bring money into your life from every possible direction. If you will look around, you will notice a strange looking machine. Walk over to that machine, and you feel the Power getting stronger and stronger. You will notice that this machine has a large antenna and two metal plates on which to place your hands.
Place your hands on the machine and focus your mind on what you want. As you do this, the machine is taking the images from your mind and sending them out into the universe with Power to create that which you desire. Visualize money and everything you can do with that money. Imagine lots and lots of money, piled high and overflowing. Allow yourself to get excited about having lots and lots of money. Enjoy the feeling of gratitude and satisfaction that you will experience having this money. Pour all of this through your hands and into the machine. Keep filling that machine with more and more images of money and what that money will do for you. Continue to breathe in Power, and send more images of money into this machine and the fun you will have with it.
When you feel that you given the machine as much as you can, take your hands off of the plates and take a step back. Relax and let yourself recharge after your efforts. You have created a future for yourself that will be filled with money and everything else you have imagined. You have done well. Sit down for a while and let yourself continue to breathe in the Power of this place. As you continue to breathe in Power, your new abilities will get stronger and more permanent.
Your connection to everything in the universe is getting stronger, and you are able to know more and more about the business deals that you will be working on. You will know what projects will be profitable and which ones to avoid. New ideas are coming to you now for business projects that you will enjoy working on and will also enrich the world greatly. You will know how to market and sell what you offer to the world. And with the new degree of focus and determination that is growing within you, your success is guaranteed.
It is now time to return to the outer world. Find the doorway that led you to this special place. Go through this door and back to the staircase of 21 steps. As you place your foot on the first step, you allow yourself to mentally run through all that you have done down here. You have made a lot of progress in this short period of time. It has been a wonderful experience. But you are ready to return to the outer world and make use of the knowledge, wisdom, and Power that you have gained. So, let's start going up the steps, counting the steps as we go.
Step 1, step 2, 3, 4, 5. You are feeling very satisfied with yourself and the progress you have made. Step 6, 7, 8, 9,10. When we get to the top of the staircase, we will be in the outer world, ready to move on to other tasks and projects. Step 11, 12, 13, 14. You are feeling more and more awake. You are starting to feel your physical body again. Step 15, 16, 17. Take a deep breath and notice your body becoming more energized again. Step 18, 19. Almost fully awake, feeling very refreshed and satisfied with yourself. Step 20 and step 21. You are now fully awake and aware of everything around you. Open your eyes and greet the new life you have created.
You have made a lot of changes for your life during this session. You will notice many things that seem to be different from what you remember them being before. This is normal and is to be expected. Everything that has changed has been an improvement, so you will enjoy the differences. Give yourself some time to adjust to the new conditions of your life. When you feel settled with the changes you've made during this session, you may repeat the session to create even more improvements in your life. May you find everything you always wanted.
