Lung Cancer: After Surgery, Chemo and Radiation, the cancer spread to his healthy lung

CK is a 62-year-old male from Kuala Lumpur. He and his wife came to see us with copies of his medical reports neatly filed in a folder. This is a very pleasant couple who is now helpless and directionless. This is what happened.
1)  20 December 2015: Had food poisoning after taking expired red wine.
2)  21 December 2015: Consulted a GP who discovered “cracking sound” in his left lung.
3) 22 December 2015: CT scan of chest showed a 3.2 x 5 cm mass in the left lung.
4)  2 January 2016: A CT-guided biopsy confirmed a bronchoalveolar adenocarcinoma.
CK was referred to a cardio-thoracic surgeon in a “heart hospital.”
5)  14 January 2016: PET scan confirmed carcinoma of the left lung with no associated locoregional or distant metastasis.
6)  23 January 2016: Admitted to the “heart hospital” for lower lobe lobectomy, i.e. surgery to remove a quarter of the lung.
The surgery was a “success” and histopathology report showed:
  1. a) Aortic wall adventitia was infiltrated by tumour.
  2. b) One pulmonary lymph node showed tumour metastasis.
  3. c) lower lobe of left lung — invasive adenocarcinoma with predominant bronchoalveolar and papillary pattern.
7)  February to June 2016: Underwent 4 cycles of chemotherapy and 20 sessions of radiotherapy.
Things seemed to be okay after all these treatments but CK had chest pains, coughs and fever. He was prescribed “strong” antibiotics.
8) 30 March 2017 — after slightly more than a year.
Follow up CT scan showed multiple nodules and patchy opacities in the upper and lower lobes of right lung.
Radiologist suggested: Differential diagnosis: lung metastases and pneumonia. Suggest close follow up CT lung after a course of antibiotics.
CK went back to his surgeon about this new development. The surgeon was pretty sure that the spots were not cancer related.
9)  1 June 2016:  CT scan of chest. The radiologists wrote the following:
CT on 23 March and 30 March 2017 were reviewed. The current CT is about 2-3 months after  the previous CTs. The current CT showed the following:
  1. a) The ground glass opacities in the right upper and lower lobes of the lung appears more dense and larger.
  2. b) Newer small nodular lesions are seen in the right upper and lower lobes.
Based on the above observations, the radiologist was of the opinion that this new development was a metastasis or recurrence. However, ground glass opacities may  be due to drug induced lung changes and infection.
The changes in the left upper lobe (note: left lower lobe was removed) are suggestive of non-neoplastic process and fibrosis. If DXT (radiotherapy) was given, these could be due to that treatment.
10) 18 September 2017: Went back to the same GP again (as in 2). “Cracking sound” at the lower part of my good lung.
Cancer marker in December 2016 was 16. In July 2017,it was 173.
CK and his wife decided not to go back to his doctors again. Because it will just be repeating the same procedures all over again — another biopsy and more chemo.
Total cost of treatment = RM130,000 of personal savings.

Comments
I had my first lesson about lung cancer some 22 years ago. The second patient of CA Care is VJ. He had lung cancer and had one side of his lung removed and underwent treatments at the “cancer hospital.” I was at the hospital and saw him suffer and eventually died.. Surgery did not cure lung cancer. Treatments received in the cancer hospital also did not cure lung cancer.
My second lesson about lung cancer came a few years later when the mother of my student underwent radiotherapy for her lung cancer. Yes, I encouraged her to go for the treatment. After completion of her treatment she died. Lesson number two, radiation does not cure lung cancer. To understand why, just go to the market and buy a piece of lung. Bring home and place the lung over fire and see what happen! The lung hardened — and is this not why the patient cannot breath?
Over the years, I have seen this story being repeated over and over again. In the case of CK, it is another one of those cases I have come across over the years.
Can herbs cure CK’s cancer? No. Can we help him? May be. CK’s problem recurred less than 2 years after treatment. After spending RM 130,000 he got nothing out of it.
Perhaps some people would want  to tell you that if you don’t go for treatment, you would die sooner. Nope — I don’t believe so. Over the years, I have patients who led a much better life if they do nothing.
Perhaps you may want to read some of the articles I have written earlier:

My advice to CK.
Don’t give up hope yet. We shall do our best. If you can sleep, can eat, can move around and have you no pain, don’t ask for more. To that CK and his wife totally agreed. In fact that was what they hope for when they came to seek our help … “to have quality life.”

May God bless you.

Bone Marrow Cancer (M.J's testimony)

Dear Dr. Batmanghelidj,

In November 1988, I was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer and was told that my condition was terminal.  For twelve (12) years, I did not receive any type of chemotherapy.

Doctors do not understand how I can live so long with terminal cancer.  most patients with this type of cancer normally live 3 to 6 years, which was the life expectancy they gave me.  They cannot understand why I do not have holes in my bones by now.

On August 4, 2000, I was taken to Parkway Medical Center's ER in the following condition:

1. Unconscious

2. Respiratory failure

3. Fever, temperature 104.8

4. Heartbeat was 222 beats per minute.

5. Blood pressure 200 / 130

6. Pneumonia

7. Bacterial meningitis (inflammation of the spinal cord and the lining of the brain)

8. Blood was sludge

9. Hemorrhaging from the nose

10.Multiple myeloma (bone cancer)

11. Zero immune system (due to bone cancer)

That same week it was reported on television that two healthy young men ages 17 and 21 died of meningitis.  The doctors said that if I had arrived at the hospital two hours later I would have been dead upon arrival.  bacterial meningitis is the worst kind of meningitis a person can contract.

I was in ICU for ten days, unconscious and on a ventilator. The doctors did not thin I was going to live.  The primary-care physician informed my family that I might need a tracheotomy, having a feeding tube placed in my intestines, and be kept alive by machines. My family was informed that I might be a vegetable if and when I wake up.  The doctors said that most patients that have been unconscious and on the ventilator for the length of time I was, usually wake up brain dead.

By the grace of God, on the 11th day I woke up breathing on my own with all my faculties and a sound mind.  Today, 9 weeks later, I stand in God's amazing grace giving Him all the praise and all the glory.  I am healed, walking in divine health. I am also still drinking a gallon and half of water with 1/2 teaspoon of salt every day. thanks to your teaching.

Sincerely,
M.J.

Your Body's Water Affects Bacteria and Its Life-Long Influence on Health and Aging

Healing Powers of Water

How the Condition of Your Body's Water Affects Bacteria and Its Life-Long Influence on Health and Aging

Modern medicine has developed rapidly over the past 100 years, thanks to the science of antibiotics and high-tech surgical procedures. We can all feel secure that a plague or epidemic will not wipe out large populations. Most diseases that were common years ago are under control. Since modern medicine is driven by pharmacology, new drugs will always be discovered that will deal with any new outbreak.

Yet, when we take a closer look, the incidence in diseases that do not respond to modern medicine continues to rise. There is a steady increase in diseases such as Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, hypertension and diabetes. According to the World Health Organization, diabetes will affect 300 million people by the year 2025. The rate is tripling in developing countries with access to modern medicine. Alzheimer's disease, which currently is at 2 or 3 million, is expected to rise to over 12 million by 2025.

Due to the increase in the aged population, multiple diseases are becoming common. This accounts for the huge pharmaceutical industry. Although new drugs have been effective for most acute diseases, more drugs are being prescribed for chronic diseases attributed to aging without any significant results. The aged are rapidly becoming a multi-drug culture.

What are we missing in trying to discover the causes of chronic diseases, which start us aging sooner while we live longer? A new population has now been identified--the chronically old and sick. It is very likely that most of us will be a part of this group.

Even more alarming is the increase in colon cancer and other intestinal disorders. Radiation treatment and chemotherapy are commonly prescribed for cancer patients. However, the statistics show that life expectancy is no greater for those undergoing these treatments than for those who refuse them. It seems that surgery and drugs are not really the answer.

The rate of colon cancer is rapidly increasing in Japan. Before World War II, Japan enjoyed one of the best health records in the world. Their diet consisted mostly of rice, fish and vegetables. The incidence of colon cancer was very low. After the war, their diet changed dramatically. Western influence provided new foods such as beef, milk, and cheese. More dramatically was the rise in fast food restaurants, exposing the Japanese people to high intake of fats. Previously, fat consumption was 20 grams per day. This rose to 70 grams. Colon cancer began to rise in Japan to where it now equals the rate found in America.

One factor attributed to the sharp increase in colon cancer is a breakdown of the bile that is secreted by the liver and stored in the gall bladder. The chemistry of bile has been found to have changed drastically. The change in quality of bile as it is transferred from the liver to the gall bladder to the colon has resulted in con-taminated and toxic bile. Secondary bile acid, such as deoxycholic acid, is a major contributor to cancer. This, along with water toxicity and the high fat content of junk foods, has created an increase in colon and liver cancers in Japan.

The key to production of secondary bile acid is seen in analyzing the fermentation process in intestinal flora. Secondary bile acid is a major factor in the breakdown of fermentation in the intestines. As it builds up in the blood, chronic diseases that are related to the deterioration of intestinal flora and difficult to treat occur. The accumulation of calcium in the gall bladder, resulting in gallstones, is attributed to secondary bile acid.

How the Nature of Bacteria is Explained in Fermentation

Much of our work in research has involved the relationship and influence of the breakdown of intestinal flora and cancer. Flora exists in a healthy, productive state and is produced when fermentation in the body follows a normal pattern. Fermentation is responsible for hormone production, immune system effectiveness, vitamin production and assimilation, cholesterol metabolism and synthesis, control of glucose levels and normal bowel functioning. Without healthy intestinal flora, protein synthesis cannot take place; thus effectiveness of vital animo acids is lost.

Fermentation is necessary in the production of many consumable products. Bacteria in fermentation make cheese, yogurt and buttermilk. Fermentation is responsible for the production of wine. In fact, it was because the grape crop in France was in danger of destruction that the wine industry commissioned Louis Pasteur to discover the cause. As a result, the application of Pasteur's theory of fermentation saved the day, making him the most respected scientist of his time.

During the second half of the nineteenth century, different schools of thought regarding fermentation developed. Pasteur, who had the attention of the scientific community based on his discoveries, strongly supported Theodore Schwann, who concluded that fermentation was based on a biological theory. Fermentation, according to Schwann and Pasteur, must occur within living cells.

Basically, Schwann believed that the growth of yeast could only be determined if living cells are involved in the process. When glucose ferments, it allows yeast bacteria to be continually produced. Pasteur added that this applied not only to alcohol fermentation but also lactic fermentation, caused by lactic bacteria, and vinegar fermentation, caused by vinegar acid fermentation. Since, according to Pasteur's thinking, the fermentation process could not take place outside of living cells it was called the Biological Theory.

However, about the same time Justus von Liebig argued against Pasteur's theory. He believed that fermentation was caused by changes in the molecular structure of bacteria, not the bacteria, per se, as Pasteur believed. Von Liebig's argument was that fermentation was caused by the transfer of movement of bacteria, creating a chemical change in yeast, not in the bacteria itself. Fermentation took place during this activity. Since fermentation is an anaerobic process, the electrons generated in the breakdown of glucose are donated to an oxidized organic molecule (oxidation). This stresses the importance of electron transfer, which becomes a catalyst in fermentation. Since this creates a change in the chemistry in a substance (such as yeast) and is responsible for its fermentation, his theory was known as the Chemical Fermentation Theory.

A bitter debate continued between whom was right until Pasteur died. However, as a result of the attention it drew from the scientific world, Eduard and Hans Buchner found what is now the most accepted cause of fermentation. (An important fact to remember, however, is that Pasteur changed his mind and recanted his "Germ Theory" before his death. However, medicine was too committed to acknowledge this and continued to move ahead with Pasteur's theory. The result is seen today in the huge, lucrative pharmaceutical industry.)

Like most discoveries that make history, the Buchners' was accidentally caused during an experiment in which they attempted to make cell-free extracts of yeast to be used as a pharmaceutical. Because these extracts could not be preserved with antiseptics, they added sucrose, (a commonly used food preservative) to the yeast. Then they left their lab for the night.

The next morning they were astonished to find that the yeast fluid had become alcohol during fermentation. As a result, they were able to prove that alcohol fermentation does not need living cells and therefore, it is not created by the grape itself but by a chemical catalyzing reaction. They also suggested what has become widely accepted, that an enzyme can be produced without originating from a living cell--enzymes are in themselves a life element. This changed what was almost universal thinking up to that time, as well as refuting Pasteur's theory. As a result of this discovery, the Buchners received the Nobel Prize in 1907.

As a footnote, there is still much resistance from the scientific community as to the acceptance of the Buchners' findings--how bacteria change in the body. Because of this resistance, we believe that medical science is losing an opportunity in understanding the role of bacteria in the disease and aging processes.

Since bacteria do not require oxygen to create an enzyme in fermentation, more than a dozen fermentation processes have evolved among bacteria, each using a different organic molecule as the hydrogen receptor. Each becomes a different acid. To add even more credibility to what the Buchners discovered over 100 years ago, we now know through the results of numerous studies that many of the reactions of lactic fermentation are the same as those of alcohol fermentation. This brings into focus even more powerfully their biochemical similarity.

Bacteria, Fermentation and Putrefaction
We have been led to believe that all bacteria are harmful and must be destroyed. We believe bacteria are the enemy. We have come to rely on antibiotics to kill bacteria, thus killing disease in our body. This sells a lot of antibiotics. Unfortunately, in the process of killing bacteria that become unstable and pathogenic, antibiotics also kill bacteria that keep us alive. The survival power of bacteria is so great that they have learned to adjust and flourish, rendering antibiotics ineffective. No wonder the incidence of chronic diseases continues to rise. In the process of killing the enemy we are destroying that which is necessary to keep us healthy.

Bacteria have been around almost since the earth's beginning. Bacteria have also lived in our body since man's beginning. There are over 100 trillion of these organisms living in our colons. Most are necessary for digestion and elimination of waste products and play an important role in natural processing of foods. When toxins that enter our body in our food and drinking water invade bacteria, new harmful bacteria are formed. These create disease.

Historically, especially in primitive societies, man respected nature and was nurtured by it. Also, historically, man and bacteria have always had a healthy relationship. Bacteria supported all forms of life. But our search for scientific knowledge turned to arrogance and this relationship changed. Since that time, man and bacteria have been at war, and the spoils of this war have been increased--incurable diseases.

When we became sophisticated in scientific thought and discovery, it was decided that bacteria were no longer needed. Rational, scientific theory and medical science propagated Pasteur's Germ Theory--that disease was caused by bacteria and had to be destroyed. This theory was developed into standard practice, which is still driving modern medicine. The tools--antibiotics-- were now available for man to conquer his or her own destiny.

Through all this, bacteria responded, "Why are you destroying us? We're your friends. You owe your lives to us." Man continued to find new weapons--antibiotics--the state of the art defense system. The war with bacteria was going to be won. But the foe became a superior enemy. Bacteria are stronger and will always survive. Sometimes they go into retreat, making us believe we have won. Then they come back, even stronger and attack aggressively. New antibiotics are created and leveled at the body, but bacteria adapt and build a resistance. Disease flourishes.

The problem, therefore, is what we have come to believe--that bacteria are the cause of the disease. Yet, we have learned through our research that it is how the bacteria change in the fermentation process when they become unstable that result in disease, not the bacteria. This is due to oxidation, or loss of electrons, which change the structure of bacteria, making them aggressive and dangerous. Intestinal flora break down and attack the organs rather than help maintain them. Healthy bacteria change and become dangerous. Many serious, chronic diseases begin.

We hydrate our body everyday with toxic water. Chemicals in our food enter the intestines. Fermentation is the result of healthy bacteria, and that creates a healthy body. Putrefaction is the result of a structural change in bacteria, making them aggressive and destructive, which leads to the body's destruction.

The difference between fermentation and putrefaction is the difference in electron oxidation/reduction and the same process that has been identified as the free-radical theory of disease. Put simply, in fermentation, bacteria maintain paired electron stability, which allow them to perform their vital functions in the body. In putrefaction, bacteria lose an electron to become unstable and aggressive, attacking cells and stealing electrons making these cells unstable. This is what is seen in cancerous cells--unstable, aggressive cells with an odd number of electrons.

A simple example that explains how the body reacts differently to fermentation and putrefaction is seen in how the digestive and elimination systems function. Under normal conditions, fermentation allows bacteria to perform a vital role in maintaining homeostasis of the body. We enjoy regular bowel movements to remove waste materials from the intestines before putrefaction overcomes fermentation. However, the results of putrefaction are seen in constipation, when the body is unable to eliminate waste materials, which changes the structure of bacteria and promotes the formation of disease in the intestines and colon. Interestingly and fortunately, diarrhea becomes the body's way of eliminating a large build up of toxicity created by putrefaction. So it is constipation that is the more serious condition. Constipation is a breakdown of natural fermentation. When intestinal flora change from fermentation to putrefaction, disease begins.

What are some of the causes of putrefaction?
The overuse of drugs and toxins in food and water are the most common influences. It is not surprising that there is a direct relationship between the increase food and water toxicity and the overuse of prescribed medications and the increase in chronic, aging-related diseases. With this huge increase, intestinal flora is altered by the instability of bacteria that activated this process. The result is that there has been a drastic change from fermentation to putrefaction.

When putrefaction takes over, toxins and waste products that are normally eliminated from our body are retained and enter the blood. The blood pH changes due to high acidity in body fluids. Over time, if the body remains in high acidity, the blood with become acidic and a condition known as acidosis will occur. This puts the body in a diseased state, destroying organs and eventually leading to death.

Water is a Vital Force in the Stability of the Fermentation Process.

To better understand the role of fermentation in the stability of bacteria in intestinal flora, we need to look at the significant role that the quality and content of the body's water plays. Briefly speaking, how water reacts to stabilize bacteria is critical to how bacteria either support or disrupt fermentation. Disrupted fermentation is putrefaction--chemical imbalance at its least threatening, or disease at its most harmful.

From the very beginning of the existence of life on Earth, water has provided the medium to prevent temperature changes from disrupting growth and development of an organism. It has been the catalyst in chemical changes, from simple to complex. It has provided the medium for electrical conduction required for ionization of cells and cellular mobility.

Fluid fluctuations affect blood volume and cellular function. This can be life threatening. When the amount of water within cells is relatively constant, there is an exchange of solutes and water between compartments to maintain unique compositions. Individuals with a greater percent of body fat have less total body water percentage and are more susceptible to fluid imbalances that cause hydration.

Total body water percent decreases with age, resulting in inadequate cellular hydration. Most critical is the decrease in the intra/extra cellular fluid ratio. With age also, kidney function becomes less efficient in producing urine and conserving sodium.

It seems that there are two major issues about water in our body that must be resolved if the body is to remain in a state of harmony and balance. First, the water in our body must be able to prevent toxins and chemical substances from accumulating and creating destructive influences in cells. Water must bring all minerals and nutrients required for metabolism into the cells and remove any substances that can damage the cell. It must be able to protect the cell membrane from damage and invasion.

Second, since water is involved in every function of the body, it must act as a conductor of electrochemical activity, such as neurotransmission, by transferring information from one nerve cell to another smoothly and efficiently. When water with a weak, electromagnetic signal enters nerve cells, the synapses cannot generate strong impulses between cells.

Relationship of Magnetism, Water and Cell Stability

What is a living cell? It is one large molecule, tied together by a matrix of water molecules. Like the atoms that compose them, they are tied together by ionic bonds consisting of positive and negative charges on their outer surfaces. In order for water to form ordered, structural energy bonds around cells, there must be an active magnetic influence present. Water molecules lose order when they are not adequately magnetized. Inadequate magnetized molecules will disrupt hydration around them, creating disorganized movement for both the cell and surrounding water. Magnetism takes place when electrons orbit round their atoms. The electrons circling around atoms resist attempts to disturb their usual orbits so they can create their own magnetic fields. If neighboring electrons are made to spin so their poles are aligned in the same direction, the cell becomes magnetically activated.

The energy in moving water generates many negative ions. As water breaks up, positive charges remain and the negative charge moves freely, forming negative ions. Recent studies have reported that ions have a pronounced effect on all of life. Studies on air borne bacteria that cause respiratory illnesses have found that an amazingly small amount of negative ions could kill these bacteria and remove them from the air.

Since water is the medium through which all electrochemical activity takes place, its ability to respond to the electromagnetic field is also critical in the body's health maintenance and healing process. Water does not exist as a single molecule, but resembles a bunch of grapes, with about 30-40 molecules in each cluster. (Sometimes there are as much as 50 or 60.) However, if water has been naturally formed with its own magnetism, molecular clusters separate into smaller clusters of five or six molecules per cluster. It is also more organized in structure and movement.

Water, despite the simplicity of its molecular structure, exhibits a complex behavior when it is influenced by electromagnetism and exchanges energy with its environment. The bonding of two molecules creates interactions of cooperation and coherence that changes the random behavior of molecules. If water has natural magnetic properties, including its own magnetic wave, it can communicate and transfer information from one molecule to another to maintain consistency in the way various bodily processes function. This keeps water at a consistent frequency, much the same as when a radio dial is on a direct frequency. When the dial is moved even slightly, static occurs and the signal is lost.

Chemistry of body fluids must be balanced in order for the process of fermentation to function normally. This requires a pH acid/alkaline balance. Normal blood pH has a very small window of normalcy. It must range between 7.35 and 7.45. This means that there is an adequate amount of oxygen in the blood. Any slight decrease in blood pH will result in lower oxygen levels and, therefore, in the cells. Even a slight drop in pH is the beginning of a disease state.

For water to be most effective in our body, it is necessary that it contain ionized minerals required to nourish and protect cells, including bacteria. It should have a slightly higher pH, which is necessary to assure that the body fluids do not become and remain over acidic, resulting in putrefaction. However, because of contamination in our environment (such as toxic wastes and chemical additives to food and drinking water) minerals have been depleted, resulting in metabolic disturbances, creating a more rapid disease and aging process to occur.

Discovering a Naturally Magnetized Water from Japan's Ancient Magnetic Mountain.
We have spent several years researching and studying a naturally magnetized water that Dr. Ohno discovered in Japan. The history of this water is remarkable and explains why it can have health and anti-aging benefits. According to geological records, a sea volcano erupted millions of years ago and rose to the surface, becoming a mountain. This occurred about the same time a huge meteorite shower poured down in this region. As a result, the magnetite from the meteorites bonded with the granite and limestone in the mountain and created a continuous magnetic effect on the water deposited in this magnetic mountain. The water has a stable history of magnetic influence on the ionization of its 74 minerals. In comparison to other water that we have studied which is artificially magnetized, the magnetization in this water continues after it is removed from its source. This has been verified in scientific study.

Three natural conditions are created in this magnetic environment, which give this water its unique qualities. First, it contains a balance of essential minerals not found in any other water. This includes trace minerals that have been depleted in soil and drinking water sources. Second, its natural magnetization allows molecules to be more highly organized in structure and movement, forming smaller clusters and allows it to be more easily absorbed and utilized by cells. Third, it has a slightly higher alkaline pH, between 7.60 and 7.80 which helps keep bodily fluids from becoming acidic. Because of its natural ionization, it can replace electrons lost by cells and bacteria before they become free radicals. It has a 1.02:1.00 density ratio to non-magnetized water.

The quality, content and activity of the water in our body and how it creates stability of bacteria and all other cells will affect how well we age and how well our body can control disease. If the water in our body is magnetized with ample negative polarity in its ions, it can provide electron reduction to bacteria through its magnetization effect, thus stabilizing bacteria. Much of what has been learned about naturally magnetized water relates to its effect on the environment of the cells.

The cells are constantly exposed to toxicity, both from the external environment and the body's internal environment. As a result of many years of studying the effects of naturally magnetized water on health and aging problems, Dr. Ohno has concluded that if the body is 70% water, bacteria and all other cells are 70% water, then the relationship of water to human health must be given priority and investigating causes of health and aging disorders. This can add credence to theories regarding aging and disease, which are creating a new force in medicine.

I Am Only Giving Them The Water

Chapter Seven

The Living Waters of Japan's Ancient Magnetic Mountain

Throughout the history of religions and legends, two things are always held sacred - mountain and water.

The mountain is home to the gods of mythology, and where Abraham, Moses and Mohammed sought and found God.
Water has purified and healed. It is the eternal symbol of life.

Destiny Leads Me to a Tofu Restaurant in Kyoto And My Search is Over

On a cold day one year after I returned to Japan, I decided to visit Kyoto.  Kyoto is one of the most popular Japanese tourist attractions.  It was the home of ancient Emperors and is still one of the most beautiful cities in the world.  I went to Kyoto for no particular reason, other than to relax and enjoy.

The cold wind had set in under my skin, and hot tea and tofu was what I needed to warm up. Being unfamiliar with Kyoto, I asked the taxi driver, " I am from Osaka and have just arrived. Can you take me to a restaurant that has the best tofu?"

"I know just the place! " he said.

As we were driving along I expected him to drive me to an expensive restaurant in one of the more exclusive parts of Kyoto.  But when he stopped in front a small building that resembles a run down house rather than a good restaurant, I asked him if he had misunderstood my request.  I had an unpleasant feeling when I looked at the old structure.  I saw in the backseat, hesitating to get out of the taxicab.

"Here we are! This is the restaurant you wanted !" the cab driver said.

"Are you sure they have good tofu here? This doesn't look very promising to me!"

"You said you wanted good tofu and this is by far the best tofu in all of Kyoto, and maybe all of Japan!  Every taxi driver knows about this place and they would have brought you here as well.  I know this place is not fancy, but if you really want the 'best' tofu, I have brought you to the right place."

"What makes the tofu so special here?  What makes it different from the other good restaurants in Kyoto?"  I asked.

"I have no idea. I just know it is the best.  Ask anyone in Kyoto.  But if you prefer, I can take you to another restaurant if that makes you feel more comfortable," he offered.

"No, you don't have to take me to another place.  You have my curiosity now by your high recommendation , and I would very much like to try the tofu here and taste the 'best' tofu in Kyoto!"

I paid the cab driver and went into the small restaurant. i was very surprised to see that the place was packed. I would have an hour wait before I was seated.  After the waitress guided me to my table, I scanned the menu she has given me.  There was nothing special about the small menu.  Everything on the menu was tofu cooked in various ways. I ordered some tofu and waited patiently for my food.

When I looked at the tofu on my plate I immediately noticed that the tofu looked shiny and smooth like a silk cloth.  I had never seen such a good-looking tofu before.  I hesitated for a moment before I put the first bite into my mouth. From the looks of this tofu, perhaps the cab driver knew what he was talking about!  But the proof would be in the taste. I closed my eyes and concentrated on mmy first bite.

"Wonderful" I shouted. "Tis is wonderful tofu!"

I looked around the restaurant to see if anyone was looking at me and thinking I was crazy.  I found myself yelling again with delight after my first mouthful of the most delicious taste I had ever experienced . i could not believe the silky texture and the deliciously smooth taste.  I was actually making a spectacle of myself as I kept announcing to everyone how delighted I was to taste this wonderful dish!

My waitress had come back to my table to make sure everything was all right.
"Excuse me, sir, is everything all right with your order?"

"Yes! Yes! This is the most delicious tofu I have ever tasted!  I need to talk to the owner of the restaurant !  Please tell him I would like to see him now!"

"Yes sir." The waitress looked a little bewildered, but left the room to find the owner. In a few moments a concerned looking man approached my table.
"Yes, I am the owner of this restaurant.  Is there a problem here?  Are you displeased with your order?" he asked.

"No! No! There is not a problem with my food! I wanted to tell you that I have never had such a delicious tofu in all my life!  I have never seen such a beautiful texture, so silky and so smooth!  Your tofu was recommended to  me because it was the  best, but I had no idea that your tofu would be this delicious! I am delighted with the taste and I wanted to ask you how you make this tofu so special.  I know there are only a few ingredients in tofu and I'm trying to figure out what you do to make it so different from the tofu I have eaten before!"

I was obviously very excited and it was difficult for me to hold back my enthusiasm.  The restaurant owner looked at me cautiously. he did not answer me immediately because he was looking me over and no doubt wondering if there was something wrong with me.  I asked him if he could take a few minutes and sit down with me so I could explain to him who I was and why I was so interested in his tofu.  Even though the restaurant was  very busy, he kindly accepted my request and he sat down to listen.

After introducing myself and explaining why I was so curious about the tofu, he relaxed and asked me to calm down. He said," Dr. Ohno, I see you are excited, but please calm down so I can answer your questions!  It is the water, a very special water that has made this tofu so good.  Tofu consists of 90% water ; it is not a solid substance even though many people think of it as being solid.  because the water we use is a special water with very fine qualities, our tofu is exceptional to taste!  This is not only true for tofu, but also for vegetables and fruits or even fish and meat. Anything that has water in it tastes better when the quality of the water is pure!"

"Both the ingredients and the water source for the tofu are from japan. The soy is grown with this water to make the tofu. This is why this tofu is so delicious and different!"

My head was spinning with excitement and my heart was pounding as he talked about a special water that was so pure.
"Where do you purchase this water?  Where does it come from ? This is very important that I know!"

Again my excitement cause him to ask me to calm down. But I couldn't ; I know in my heart that I had been guided to this restaurant that day to find this water.  I was fond of tofu, but never before had I wanted tofu so much that I would ask a cab driver to recommend a good tofu restaurant to me! It seems as though I had been gently guided by some invisible force to have a craving for tofu that day so I would come here to learn about this special water.  This would be too much of a coincidence for this water no to be the water I had been searching for.  My excitement could not be contained.

"Dr. Ohno! Please , calm down! After  you finish your meal, we can sit somewhere quietly and I can give you more information about where this water comes from!"

After I finished my tofu I joined him at a quiet area in the back. The waitress brought us both some tea and he proceeded to explain to me the history of this water.

" I discovered this water through my uncle.  My uncle had been a cigarette smoker and he was suffering from lung cancer. When he was diagnosed with lung cancer, the doctor said that the only alternative he could recommend was chemotherapy. So my uncle started with chemo treatments , but the side effects were so strong that he could not bear it.  He finally asked his doctor to stop the chemotherapy.  Hos doctor told him that if he stopped the treatments, he would have no chance of surviving.  But my uncle was a stubborn man and he did not want to continue with the treatment any longer.  So finally the doctor agreed to discharge my uncle from the hospital."

"After he left the hospital his symptoms became worse.  he had to do something to help himself, so he turned to Oriental medicine. One day a friend advised him to visit a doctor who treated end-stage cancer patients. It seemed this doctor gave his patients a special water.  After drinking the water for a period of time, their cancer would go into remission.  His friend gave him the name of the doctor and told him the hospital where he was practicing."

"So, with nothing to lose, my uncle went to the hospital to find this doctor.  Soon after  meeting with the doctor, he was given this water. In a short time, his condition dramatically improved! His appetite, which had all but vanished , was back once again.  My uncle was able to eat and started to gain weight. The tumors on his lung began to shrink, until eventually they were gone!"

" I know this is a difficult story to believe, but it is true! At first it was very difficult for me to believe that my uncle was cured by drinking water! If it had not been that this happened to my own uncle, who I know very well and witnessed his healing, I know I would not trust someone who would tell me such a far-fetched story.  Six months after my uncle started drinking the water his lung cancer was in remission! Amazingly,Dr. Ohno, this is a true story."

" Tell me, Dr. Ohno, what do you think about this story?"

I told him that I believed what he told me was possible and I trusted that this water could have special properties that aided in the healing of his uncle's lung cancer.  He was happy to see that I believed his story.  He went on to say, "I have tried to explain this story to many of my friends, and even though they know me very well, they find it difficult to believe me.  In order to further prove this to myself, I decided to drink this water, because I had hypertension and diabetes.  I thought that if the water could help my uncle with lung cancer, perhaps it could help with my health problem as well.  Every day, I had to take medication  for my high blood pressure, and insulin for my diabetes. Shortly after I started to drink this magnetized water, my blood pressure dropped from 180/120 to 120/78 !  My glucose level dropped from 300 to where it is now at 120 ! I will always drink a bottle of this water every day to maintain my health."

" I have also discovered that I experience more energy that I did before ! It used to be difficult for me to get up in the morning because I was always so tired.  Now, even if I go to bed after midnight, I wake up in the morning between 5-6 AM feeling refreshed.

After taking a break and sipping some  more tea, the restaurant owner continued with his story.

"After my uncle and I had such a good experience with this water, I thought of the idea of using this water for cooking in my restaurant. I knew that because tofu was made up of 90% water, that the purity of the water would make a big difference in the taste and the quality of the tofu.  So, I started using the water in my restaurant and I never said anything to anyone about it.  But within a short period of time, I had a great increase in business. People from all over have come to taste our tofu!"

His story intrigued me and I wanted to learn more about the water. I also wanted to meet the doctor who was administering the water to his cancer patients.  I asked him, " Where can I go to meet this doctor and find out more about this special water?"

"The doctor you want to talk to is at Shibata Hospital in Okayama. His name is Dr. Jinro Itami. I can give you directions how to get there."

Dr. Itami, Shibata Hospital, Okayama, Japan.

After I returned home, I scheduled an appointment to see Dr. Itami.  I made the three-hour trip from Osaka to Okayama and the Shibata Hospital.  Even though the hospital looked humble and small, I felt a special energy from the building and from the staff when I walked inside.  I waited for 10 minutes and Dr. Itami, a man about 50 years old ( Year 2000), came over and introduced himself. His voice was soft and caring, and his eyes were kind and compassionate. I felt immediately that I could trust him. And this proved to be true.  He was generous with his time during that first visit, as he took time out of his busy schedule from seeing his patients.

"Welcome, Dr. Ohno!  Welcome to Shibata Hospital ! I am so glad to meet you!  I have been looking forward to meeting you, especially after our conversation about the water over the phone. There aren't many doctors who understand the importance of water and how water affects our body!"

I was impressed with Dr. Itami and his humility from our first conversation. When he discussed his patients and how they have been healed, he never indicated to me that he was taking the credit. he always gave the credit to the water.  He had said, " I am not curing the patients, it is the water that is making the difference. I am only giving them the water."

Now that I had met him in person, I was able to confirm that he was indeed a sweet and modest man.  His attitude was very different from the typical Japanese doctors I was used to associating with, who were generally arrogant.  The more I talked with him, the more I liked him.  he was a true humanitarian and meeting him inspired me.  I was now even more excited about discussing the water with him.

"Please tell me about this special water, Dr. Itami. How long have you been using it with your patients?"

"I have been using the water with end-stage cancer patients now for 10 years (i.e.since 1990) , Dr.Ohno. I have kept records since I started giving water to my cancer patients!"

"What can you tell me about your findings?"

""Most of the patients visit me at this hospital after they have moved into the end stages of cancer.  Most of these patients have already gone through radiation, surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. many patients have been to several doctors, who offered them new 'cures' for cancer. Most of these patients have lost trust in their doctors because none of them seemed to improve.  Their hopes have been dimmed, and they are scared of facing death.  They are looking for a miracle that can give them hope and a chance to live.  Even though I do not claim to work miracles, I believe I have given many of my patients hope in helping them to deal with their cancer.  You see, Dr. Ohno, my mission in medicine is to give people hope. Even if I am  not able to cure them of their cancer, at least I want to give them hope."

"Years ago I heard about a mountain that was being mined. The miners who worked there drank the water that came out of the mountain. Many of these miners were suffering from health problem; such as arthritis, hypertension, diabetes, kidney stones, to name a few.  After drinking this water over a period of time, they discovered that their health improved and some of their symptoms  had disappeared altogether.  When I heard  about this from some of the miners, i began to wonder if there would be benefits fro this water for my cancer patients. Even though I was skeptical, I decided it was at least worth trying."

"I knew that my patients would try anything to cure their cancer.  You know the saying ; A drowning man will reach  for a straw. In other words, a dying man will try anything that will help him live. "

Dr. Itami invited me to take a stroll with him to visit some of his patients.  One of the first patients Dr. Itami pointed out was a young man, 42 years old.  he had just been admitted into the hospital with liver cancer. Dr. Itami told me, "This man was told that he has only three months to live.  He is in the end-stages of liver cancer and the cancer has metastasized to his major organs. His doctor told him that there was nothing they could do to help him, and he should go to hospice.  His wife had heard from a  friend about our work here and how the water was helping to cure cancer in some patients."

I looked at the man with his belly swollen like a sumo wrestler.  he was dreadfully thin and he looked very tired. I reached out my hand to shake his as I introduced myself, I asked him , "How are you feeling?"

The patient said, " I have had no appetite even though my abdomen is growing larger from the swelling every day. But I have not given up because many of my friends have told me about Dr. Itami and his special water.  I am hoping that this water will cure my liver cancer.  This is my last chance.  I know I can trust you, Dr. Itami, because I have been told that  you are a true caring and compassionate person. I believe that you can help me!"

Dr. Itami listened and looked down , smiling shyly. As we walked away, he explained to me , "I will start giving the water to him right away.  I hope that the water will give him new hope . But all I can do is my best and allow the water to work in his body.  The rest is up to God."

As we continued to walk through the hospital ward, many patients smiled and waved to Dr. Itami. One patient in particular called him over, " Dr. Itami! Thank you so much for helping me! You have given me so much hope. I have never had another doctor care for me in the way you do.  I am so thankful that I came here so you could help me.  Even though I may die here, Dr. Itami, I will never regret it because I found a doctor I could trust!"

I watched Dr. Itami as many patients sang his praises. Never once did he show an attitude of conceit.  He smiled to every patient, and he made everyone feel at ease.  I witnessed his humanitarian behavior.  He was really a special and unusual doctor.  he was not caught up in ego and greed. Rather, he was fueled by his mission to give hope to patients, who had nothing left to turn to but hope and prayer.

Something I felt was amazing with these patients.  I could understand how the woman who had been here for awhile talked about trusting Dr. Itami. But the liver cancer patient who had just been admitted to the hospital already trusted Dr. Itami. I wondered how it was that he was able to gain the trust of this patient so quickly, even before giving the patient any kind of care.

I remembered  when my mother had her breast cancer operation. i recalled how she told me that she trusted my brother Dr. Yoshioki because there was a special spiritual energy that worked between them.  I believed in this energy and knew that it was imperative for the healing process to be successful.

" Dr. Itami, how do you go about gaining the complete trust of your patients? You seem to have a gift for gaining a patient's trust. How are you able to do this?"

"Dr. Ohno, when my patients come here, I am often times their very lasy hope. usually they have already seen several doctors and have gone through taking several different kinds of drugs and therapies.  Nothing has worked for them or they would not be here.  Most of these patients have lost their trust in doctors and the medical profession.  They see their lives slipping helpless away. When they first are admitted to the hospital, they do not know that i am any different from other doctors. because they need to gain hope and trust before they can begin to get better, I help them by the way I treat them."

"The first thing I do is ask the patient to relax.  I acknowledge that I know they are scared and I talk with them in a caring way. I spend the first three days getting to know them as a person.  Iask them questions about their life, their family, what they do for a living, or I ask them to share with me what they want me to know about them.  It's not until after the third day that I begin to discuss their medical history with them.  By the time I begin to treat them medically, we have developed a relationship that is based upon the deepest human factors of trust and faith.  I continue to remind them to relax and I always listen to their fears and concerns.  Quickly, I am able to give the patient hope and in return, they are able to give me their trust. Both must work together, Dr. Ohno, for healing to occur."

From everything I was experiencing from talking with him and watching him with his patients, I truly liked and respected Dr. Itami.  He was everything I felt he was from my first impression. He was kind and compassionate; a true humanitarian doctor. I was very impressed with him. When we returned to his office, I asked him, "Dr. Itami, what is it about this water that makes it so special?"

"I'm not sure why the water works on diseases, but I do know the history of this water. Almost a billion years ago, there was an undersea volcano that erupted in this area.  When the volcano erupted it rose up out of the ocean and became a mountain. Following the volcano eruption there was a huge meteorite shower in this same area. The magnetite in the meteorites bonded with the limestone and granite of the mountain. This created a permanent magnetic mountain.
"As water flows into the mountain, it is magnetized with the mountain's magnetic field. because of its magnetism, the water is able to attract 74 minerals that are in the mountain.  Some of these minerals are calcium, magnesium, selenium, and potassium, gold, silver, iron. What is equally important about this mineral water is the ionic organization of its structure.  The mineral water has an organized ionization that is unique. When this water is inside our bodies, it helps to create a healthy environment."  I was in complete agreement with Dr. Itami because he confirmed everything I knew about water and magnetism.

Chapter 4 THE PROBIOTIC MIRACLE

Chapter 4

THE PROBIOTIC MIRACLE

An Army Of Billions

When you were born, your intestines were free of microorganisms, virtually sterile. Almost immediately, however, bacteria, both beneficial and harmful, fought for dominance.[1*]
If you were breast fed, somewhere between days four and seven after you were born, the "good guys" won the battle and staked their claim to virtually every square inch of your digestive tract—from your mouth to your anus.[2**]
(Researchers now realize that one of the chief reasons breast-fed babies get so many fewer infections than formula-fed babies is that mother's milk tends to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, whereas store-bought formulas have
little such beneficial effect.) Anyway, the net result is that in a breast-fed baby, beneficial bacteria
(such as bifidobacteria) control over 90% of the intestinal tract. These microorganisms, in turn, produce a large amount of essential byproducts in the intestines, which act as a barrier to the growth of dangerous pathogenic microbes that can cause disease and infection.

[1*: It's a battle that's never totally won; the harmful bacteria are never completely eliminated. But in a healthy body, the bad guys never get a chance to gain a foothold—to colonize—to reproduce exponentially. One of the problems, of course, is that every second of every single day, we are constantly being exposed to billions and billions of potentially harmful microorganisms with every breath we take or bit of food that we swallow or swig of water that we drink.]

[2**: The same battle is fought in the vaginal tract, the nasal cavities, and in the mouth. Just as a note, there are some 40 different types of bacteria resident in a healthy mouth alone.]

When you're healthy, over 100 trillion microorganisms from some 400 different species flourish in your intestinal tract, aiding in digestion, absorption, and the production of significant amounts of B vitamins and enzymes. But even more importantly, they cover virtually every square inch of available surface space from your mouth to your anus, thus crowding out all harmful bacteria—allowing them no place to gain a foothold.

Unfortunately, the levels of beneficial bacteria decline dramatically as the human body ages. Some of the reasons for this decline include:

> Over time, the colonies of friendly bacteria just naturally age and lose their vitality.

> Disruptions and changes in the acid/alkaline balance of the bowels can play a major role in reducing the growth of beneficial bacteria. In addition, these changes tend to favor the growth of harmful viral and fungal organisms as well as putrefactive, disease-causing bacteria.

> Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) like Advil, Motrin, Midol, etc. are destructive to intestinal flora.

> Chlorine in the drinking water not only serves to kill bacteria in the water; it is equally devastating to the colonies of beneficial bacteria living in the intestines.

 > Radiation and chemotherapy are devastating to your inner bacterial environment.

> Virtually all meat, chicken, and dairy that you eat (other than organic) is loaded with antibiotics, which destroy all of the beneficial bacteria in your gastrointestinal tract.

 > A diet high in meats and fats, because they take so long to break down in the human body, promotes the growth of the harmful, putrefying bacteria.

 > Constipation, of course, allows harmful bacteria to hang around longer, which allows them to proliferate.

> Cigarettes, alcohol, and stress are also major culprits, as are some antibiotic herbs,
such as goldenseal (if taken in sufficient quantity).

> And if you've ever been subjected to a round of "medicinal" antibiotics, you can kiss your beneficial bacteria goodbye. The problem is that antibiotics indiscriminately destroy both bad and good bacteria, allowing virulent, mutant strains of harmful microorganisms to emerge and run rampant inside the body.[1*]

A properly functioning intestinal tract is one of your body's first lines of defense against invaders. In a healthy colon there are, on average, anywhere from 100 billion to 100 trillion beneficial bacteria per milliliter (about 1/5 of a teaspoon) that literally consume harmful bacteria and other invaders. In the typical American, because of poor diet and neglect of the colon, the beneficial bacteria count may be as low as four or five per milliliter. Just compare 100 trillion to four, and ...

[1* Antibiotics (both medicinal and in our food supply) are the #1 culprit in the overgrowth of harmful pathogens in the gastrointestinal tract (a condition called dysbiosis) that may be at the root of many autoimmune disorders and certain cancers.

...you'll have an understanding of the scope of the problem. Many researchers now believe that declining levels of friendly bacteria in the intestinal tract may actually mark the onset of chronic degenerative disease. The benefits of a probiotically optimized intestinal tract include:
>Lowered cholesterol;

>Inhibition of cancer;

>Protection against food poisoning;

>Protection against stomach ulcers;

>Protection against lactose intolerance and casein intolerance;

>Enhanced immunity;

>Protection against many harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi;

>Protection against candida overgrowth and vaginal yeast infections;

>Prevention and correction of constipation and diarrhea, ileitis and colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and a whole range of other digestive tract dysfunctions;

>Improvement in the health and appearance of the skin;

>Better nutrition from improved absorption and the internal generation of B vitamins;

>Protection against vaginosis and yeast infections.

Summary

There can be no true health or recovery from disease unless you have colonies of over 100 trillion beneficial microorganisms flourishing throughout your intestinal tract, aiding in digestion,
absorption, the production of significant amounts of vitamins and enzymes, and working to crowd out all harmful bacteria—allowing them no place to gain a foothold. Supplementation with a
good probiotic is mandatory to raise your baseline of health.

General Recommendations

A good probiotic formula is absolutely essential for long-term intestinal health and long-term parasite control. When choosing a probiotic, look for the following characteristics:

Not all strains of beneficial bacteria are created equal. For each type of bacteria, there are recognized super strains. Choose a formula that uses only recognized super strains of beneficial bacteria. They will be identified as such on the label or in the company literature. If the strains are not identified, don't buy it.

Make sure the formula you choose was developed using full-culture processing so that the beneficial bacteria and its powerful supernatant are kept together. The supernatant, which is the medium the culture was grown in, contains a multitude
of beneficial byproducts of the growth process, including vitamins, enzymes, antioxidants, and immune stimulators.

Then there's the question of how many live microorganisms are left in your formula when you actually use it. Pick up any probiotic formula, look at the label, and you'll see something like: "Contains 13 billion live organisms per capsule at time of manufacture." And that's the problem: "at time of manufacture." The die-off rate can be astounding. Most formulas will experience a die-off approaching log-3 (or down to a paltry 13 million) within just 60 days of manufacture.[1*]
Heat and moisture accelerate the process, which is why most manufacturers recommend that both you and the store in which you bought your formula keep your probiotic supply refrigerated.

There are many beneficial bacteria that can be contained in a good probiotic, but two are preeminent. Look for a formula based on these two:
- L. acidophilus resides primarily in the small intestine [2*]
and produces a number of powerful antimicrobial compounds in the gut (including acidolin, acidolphilin, lactocidin, and bacteriocin). These compounds can inhibit the growth and toxin producing capabilities of some 23 known disease-causing pathogens (including campylobacter, listeria, and staphylococci), as well as reduce tumor growth and effectively neutralize or inhibit carcinogenic substances. There are three recognized super strains of acidophilus: DDS, NAS, and BT1386. You will find DDS and NAS
in most of the better formulas, but my personal preference is for BT1386. It has an extremely high potential for attachment to the epithelial cells that line the intestine; it's a high producer of hydrogen peroxide, which kills pathogenic bacteria; and, of
the three strains, it's the only one capable of utilizing glycogen to survive and flourish, which means it can thrive in the urinary tract, where it produces lactic acid to inhibit the growth of pathogens. This is particularly important to women to help prevent a whole range of vaginal infections.

- Many researchers believe that declining levels of bifidobacteria in the large intestine actually mark the eventual onset of chronic degenerative disease. Bifidobacteria benefit the body in a number of ways. They (1) consume old fecal matter; (2) have the ability to remove cancer-forming elements, or the enzymes which lead to their formation; (3) protect against the formation of liver, colon, and mammary gland tumors. And in addition to all of that, (4) bifidobacteria are substantial producers of a range of important B vitamins.

More is not always better. Too many beneficial bacteria in one formula may find the bacteria competing with each other before they can establish themselves in separate areas of the intestinal tract. On the other hand, there are several other bacteria that are extremely beneficial in any probiotic formula.

- L salivarius helps digest foods in the intestinal tract and makes vital nutrients more assimilable. It also works to eat away encrusted fecal matter throughout the entire colon; it helps repair the intestinal tract by providing needed enzymes and essential nutrients; and it adheres to the intestinal wall, thereby forming a living matrix that helps protect the mucosal lining.

[1* There is a new process called LiveBac®, which significantly retards the rate of die-off. Look for formulas that make use of this process.]

[2* It's also important to note that L. acidophilus is the primary beneficial bacteria in the vaginal tract. When the presence of the acidophilus is compromised, this allows the bad guys such as Gardnerella vaginalis or E. coli or Chlamydia to take over.

- L. rhamnosus is a powerful immune stimulator. It can increase the natural killing activity of spleen cells, which may help to prevent tumor formation. It boosts the ability of the body to destroy foreign invaders and other harmful matter by three times normal activity; and has been shown to increase circulating antibody levels by six to
eight times.

- L. plantarum has the ability to eliminate thousands of species of pathogenic bacteria. It also has extremely high adherence potential for epithelial tissue and seems to favor colonizing the same areas of the intestinal tract that E. coli prefers—in effect, serving to crowd E. coli out of the body. At one time, plantarum was a major part of our diets (found in sourdough bread, sauerkraut, etc.), but is now virtually nowhere to be found.

- Other important friendly bacteria you might find in a good formula include: Streptococcus thermophilus, L. bulgaricus, and L. casei.

- Much has been written about the properties of the soil-based bacteria such as: Bacillus subtilis, L. sporogenes, and B. laterosporus. For many people, they can produce a powerful boost to the immune system. But, in certain circumstances, they may become toxic. It's hard to argue with the great results that many people have had using formulations that contain these cultures. On the other hand, it's possible to get all of the same results using only the "safer" cultures that I've mentioned above.

- Note: a good probiotic formulation will usually contain fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) which help promote the growth of beneficial bacteria.[1]

  - One final note: start slowly. When you first start using a probiotic supplement, there is a good chance that you will precipitate a die-off of bad bacteria in your intestinal tract. This can lead to excessive gas and stomach rumblings and cramping
for 10-21 days. Start with one capsule (or even half) for several days. Build up slowly to the recommended dosage for your particular supplement.

>Eating yogurt (unless you make your own) does not really help. First, the bacteria used to make most yogurt (L. bulgaricus and S. thermophilus) are not the key beneficial bacteria, although they are indeed helpful. (Some brands throw a small amount of acidophilus in after the fact—just so they can put it on the label). Even more important, though, much of the yogurt that you buy in the store is now pasteurized after it is made. Pasteurization before the yogurt culture is introduced is essential to the making of yogurt; but pasteurization after the culture has been allowed to grow is done merely to increase shelf life and totally destroys all the benefits inherent in the yogurt.

>A diet high in complex carbohydrates such as fruits, grains, and vegetables promotes the growth of bifidobacteria in the large intestine.

>And of course, drinking chlorinated water, or eating meats or dairy produced with antibiotics, totally defeats any program you're on.

[1 For some of these bacteria, such as the Bifidus, FOS can increase their effectiveness by a factor of 1,000 times or more!! ]

Do You Have The Knowledge & Hope When Fighting Cancer ?

Fighting Cancer With Knowledge & Hope
WHY DO CANCER TREATMENTS SOMETIMES FAIL? (PAGES 188-190)
(a) Drug resistance or the growth of cancer in the face of ongoing or recently completed treatments represents the main barrier to cure for many cancers
 (b) The root cause of a cancer relapse lies in the fact that cancer is not an accumulation of exactly the same cells but rather a mixture of cells with differing properties.
(c) Drug resistance may be present in an untreated cancer or emerge in responseto therapy
(e)   Several types of cancer have been found to contain a very small population of cancer stem cells, which are believed to be responsible for continually replenishing the pool of cells in a tumour. It turns out that an additional property of these cancer stem cells is their natural resistance to chemotherapy and other cancer treatment.

THE AUTHOR:Dr. Richard C. Frank, MD,an oncologist, is the Director of Cancer Research, Whittingham Cancer Center, Norwalk Hospital, Norwalk, CT, and Medical Director, Mid-Fairfield Hospice, Wilton, CT.USA

WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT:  As expected, the whole book is devoted mainly to describing the virtues of conventional treatment of the various types of cancers via surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, targeted therapies and hormone therapies. However in the chapter on How Cancer Grows and Cancer Treatments at Work”,Dr. Frank gives an explanation as to why chemotherapy may not work for you. We summarize the main points below:-

CANCER CAN GROW UNPREDICTABLY (pages 124-126)

a)      Although cancer appears to develop in an organized fashion when viewed from the outside, if we were to go inside a tumour with a little magnifying glass and monitor the movement of cells and the integrity of DNA; we would see a much more chaotic situation.

b)      As a cancer develops and grows, the DNA that guides it along is prone to change…. as a cancer grows, its genetic makeup becomes diversified, which leads to a diversity of cell types within it…. cancer is not a collection of identical cells.

c)       The tendency of a cancer to generate cells with different capabilities explains many of the dreadful aspects of cancer that patients find so hard to grapple with:

  • Why it can spread from one location to another,
  • Why it stops responding to a treatment that was working,
  • Why it can return when it was in remission
The reason is that every cancer, whether it arises in the lung, breast, prostate, bone marrow, or elsewhere, contains different populations of cells that have distinct properties.

d)      A cancerous tumour does not contain billions of identical clones. Cancer could never develop in this way because it must avoid the immune system’s attack on it, live in areas of low oxygen tension, and compete with the rest of the body for vital nutrients.

e)      Inside any tumour are cells that are living and cells that have died. There are cancer cells capable of reproducing many others, called cancer stem cells, and cells completely devoid of this capacity. Cancer’s diversity is generated early. By the time it is diagnosed, some cells may already be capable of metastasizing and others may be able to withstand a particular cancer treatment. This is the basis of cancer’s resistance to treatment i.e. chemotherapy (see section “Why Do Cancer Treatments Sometimes Fail?”).

f)       When new cancer cells are generated inside a tumour, some will be hearty enough to survive and others will not be. If some cells survive the treatment, then it is mainly because their DNA contains the necessary alterations that help them resist the chemotherapy drug; this population of cells will then expand, and the compositions of the cancer will again change. (page 126)

g)      …. when a cancer returns after being declared in complete remission, it is because a few cells were different enough to stay alive after a treatment killed nearly all the other cells; this difference could have been present from the start of treatment or it could have developed as a response to it. Whichever occurred, it is cancer’s ability to diversify and adapt its DNA that enables it to survive. (page 126)

WHY DO CANCER TREATMENTS SOMETIMES FAIL? (PAGES 188-190)

(a) Drug resistance or the growth of cancer in the face of ongoing or recently completed treatments represents the main barrier to cure for many cancers…. (page 188). In many instances, oncologists cannot specify why a person’s cancer develops treatment resistance…. treatment resistance is probably the most complicated area of oncology. (page 189).

(b) The root cause of a cancer relapse lies in the fact that cancer is not an accumulation of exactly the same cells but rather a mixture of cells with differing properties. Some may have sensitivity to certain drugs and be killed by them, whereas others are resistant to those drugs. The resistant population will survive treatment and in time be detected as a cancer relapse. (page 189)

(c) Drug resistance may be present in an untreated cancer or emerge in response to therapy…. the innate adaptability of cancer cells and how they can sometimes outwit an effective therapy by altering their DNA or other molecules. This property explains the acquisition of resistance during a cancer’s growth. (pages 189-190)

(d)   Chemotherapy may lose its effectiveness when cancer cells activate a protein that pumps the drugs out as soon as they enter the cells; targeted therapies may lose their ability to control their targets when those receptors and signalling proteins mutate and morph into different shapes; hormone therapies may stop controlling cancer growth when estrogen or androgen receptors undergo a shape change or get massively overproduced, overwhelming the drugs meant to neutralize them. (page 190)

(e)   Several types of cancer have been found to contain a very small population of cancer stem cells, which are believed to be responsible for continually replenishing the pool of cells in a tumour. It turns out that an additional property of these cancer stem cells is their natural resistance to chemotherapy and other cancer treatment.

(f)     Some chemotherapy drugs (as well as radiation therapy) may contribute to (or directly cause) the development of new cancers many years after treatment (page 174). And it has been known for decades that chemotherapy alone cannot eradicate the advanced stages of the most common cancers (page 175).
TARGETED THERAPIES: (PAGES 175-180)

The current hot trend is to offer targeted drugs like Erbitux (for colorectal, head and neck cancers), Rituxan (for lymphoma), Herceptin (for breast cancer), Tarceva(for lung cancer), Sutent (for kidney cancer) and etc. Once in the bloodstream, they act like heat-seeking missiles, locating cancer cells wherever they lurk and gripping onto them via one specific receptor target (among thousands of receptors) that projects from the outer surface of the cells. The result is that the receptors stop transmitting growth signals inside the cells (page 177).

(a) Are targeted therapies “magic bullets”?
According to Dr Frank …..” although targeted therapies were developed with the hope that they would be magic bullets that would neatly eradicate cancer through selective targeting of one critical molecule, in general they have fallen short of this lofty goal. No cancer is considered curable by treatment through a targeted therapy alone… (page 180) The reason for the muted success of targeted therapies is that most cancers are caused not by one genetic derangement but by several; no one target functions as an Achilles heel. “(page 180)

(b) Do targeted therapies cause side effects?
“Like any other drug taken for any purpose, unintended effects may occur with these medications. Generally speaking, targeted therapies are easier to tolerate – less hair-loss, smaller declines in blood counts, less nausea… still, substantial side effects may occur with some targeted therapies, and they tend to increase the toxicities of chemotherapy when used in combination.” (page 182)

Finally, angiogenesis inhibitors (like Avastin, Sutent, Nexavar, Thalomid) constrict blood vessels not only inside tumours but also in other parts of the body. As a result, they often cause some degree of high blood pressure and are associated with an increased risk for kidney damage, bleeding, stroke and coronary artery blockage. (page 183)

In conclusion, we quote two very relevant statements by Dr. Frank:-
i.      Efforts to blast away metastatic cancers with mega doses of chemotherapy have fallen short because they do not root it out but rather cause more harm than good: the cancer is still present and the patient is sicker than ever. (page 143)
ii.      Even though billions of dollars are invested in cancer research every year, most new drugs in the research pipeline will extend life rather than the silver bullets that pierce the heart of cancer. (page 145)

THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME WORDS OF ADVICE BY DR FRANK ON NUTRITIONAL pages 102-110.

Although the whole book is about conventional cancer medicine, Dr Frank did make some notable comments/advice on diet and cancer (not the”eat anything you like” type).

We summarise the main points as follows:-

a)      …the contribution of diet…to the development of cancer is so large that if behaviours could be changed, many cancers could be avoided altogether(and many oncologists will be without jobs).  Almost 30 years and a great deal of research later, the link between poor nutritional habits…and the development of cancer have been solidified…

b)      A large and ever-growing number of studies indicate…..cancers are highly influenced by one’s pattern for living: a diet high in red meat and animal fats and low in fruits and vegetables…contributes an unhealthy pattern for living that often leads to major illness.

c)       Diet can promote or inhibit the formation of cancer…through:-
(i)      The presence of carcinogens in food (which can be natural constituents or man-made additives);
(ii)     The generation of carcinogens by cooking…when foods are smoked, fried, or grilled, polycyclic hydrocarbons are produced;
(iii)    The increased exposure of the body to carcinogens by a diet low in fiber, which slows down bowel movement;
(iv)    ”over-nutrition” or excess body weight.

d)      Excess body fat promotes the development of cancer because it leads to two important changes in the body’s chemistryLpage 109)
(i)      The development of the insulin resistance syndrome or metabolic syndrome; and
(ii)     The increased production of estrogen.

e)      More fat, more estrogen, more breast cancer.  The ovaries are the main source of estrogen production in menstruating women.  When ovarian function ceases upon menopause, estrogen is still produced in the female body, although in lesser amounts.  In post-menopausal women, fat becomes the main estrogen factory, with higher body weights correlating with higher estrogen levels…and estrogen stimulates the growth of the breast and uterus. Just as the normal cells in these tissues multiply in response to estrogen, so do (most) cancers derived from them.(page 109)

f)       The connection between fat and breast cancer is in part caused by the fact that fat contains an enzyme called aromatase that increases estrogen production.  So even after menopause, when the ovaries have ceased producing estrogen, the hormone still gets made in the body.  That’s why a class of medicines called aromatase inhibitors (AIs)…. blocks aromatase from working and thereby drastically reduces the levels of estrogen in the bloodstream.  Examples of AIs are femara (Letrozole), anastrazole (Arimidex)(page 110)
