around-the-world road trip

The Pan-American Highway is widely considered the ultimate around-the-world road trip, spanning approximately 30,000 miles (with some estimates reaching 19,000 miles for the drivable continuous sections) from Alaska to Argentina.  It is recognized as the world's longest motorable road, though travelers must ship vehicles to bypass the Darien Gap between Central and South America.

For a comprehensive global circuit, travelers often combine multiple iconic routes:

North America: Driving Route 66 (Chicago to Santa Monica) or the Pacific Coast Highway (San Francisco to Los Angeles).

Europe: The Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland, the North Coast 500 in Scotland, or the Ring Road in Iceland.

Asia & Middle East: The Karakoram Highway in Pakistan or overland routes from London to Ulan-Ude via the Mongol Rally path.

Oceania: The Big Lap around Australia (40,000 km) or the South Island Loop in New Zealand.

Africa: The Garden Route in South Africa or an overland journey from Johannesburg to Cape Town.

Some adventurers attempt a continuous driving loop from Russia to South Africa (17,789 miles) or combine flights with road segments to visit destinations like Patagonia, Southeast Asia, and Hawaii for a complete circumnavigation.
