Relatives in Cantonese, Hakka, Mandarin and Taiwanese

There is a short verse in Hakka saying which is a rough measure of how 'related' we are to family members stemming from a female's side of the family. 客家话中有一句短诗,粗略地衡量我们与家庭成员之间的“亲缘关系”,源于家庭中的女性一方。  Kèjiā huà zhōng yǒu yījù duǎn shī, cūlüè de héngliáng wǒmen yǔ jiātíng chéngyuán zhī jiān de “qīnyuán guānxì”, yuán yú jiātíng zhōng de nǚxìng yīfāng.

一代親  [it toi chin]

二代表 [ni toi piau]

三代姑婆 [sum toi ku poh]

閑了了 [han liau liau]

pronouce in Hakka dialect : (it toi chin / ni toi piau / sum toi ku poh / han liau liau /

First generation close / Second generation cousins / Third generation Great Aunt / Nothing doing!

这意味着一旦大姨妈去世,她与家人的“亲缘关系”就会被切断。 它证明了大姨妈的爱是她家庭成员的桥梁。Zhè yìwèizhe yīdàn dà yímā qùshì, tā yǔ jiārén de “qīnyuán guānxì” jiù huì bèi qiēduàn. Tā zhèngmíngliǎo dà yímā de ài shì tā jiātíng chéngyuán de qiáoliáng.

This implies that once Great Aunt passes away, the 'relatedness' link to her family can be severed. It proves the Great Aunt's love as the bridge for her families membership.

Bassins des Lumières

BASSINS DES LUMIÈRES

A Place of History

Bordeaux’s submarine base was built by the Germans during the Second World War. Culturespaces is bringing the base back to life by creating the largest French digital art centre holding major immersive exhibitions.

The construction of the submarine base

1940

The construction of the submarine base

Bordeaux, which was occupied by German troops at the end of June 1940, was a strategic base for the German occupying forces. Bordeaux’s location near the Atlantic Ocean, its port facilities, and its distance from the British enemy made it a very attractive choice.

The construction of the submarine base

The port district of Bacalan, north of Bordeaux, was chosen for the construction as of 1 September 1940 of an initial base for Italian submarines: the Betasom base. Camouflage nets were placed along the quays to conceal the 32 submarines from allied aircraft.

In September 1941, work began on the construction of the fifth submarine base on France’s Atlantic coast. Nineteen months of work and a large workforce were required. Six thousand five hundred workers, of whom more than a third were Spanish Republican prisoners, were involved in the construction of the base.

The work began with earthworks for the construction of the units; around 2,000 reinforced concrete piles were driven into the ground to stabilise it. A nine-metre-thick roof, made of concrete poured on corrugated iron sheeting, whose top was covered by a Fangrost (screen or bomb trap) framework composed of rows of concrete beams, protected the construction from any aerial attacks.

KEY FIGURES

After 19 months of work, Bordeaux’s submarine base was inaugurated on Thursday 13 May 1943. A review of a colossal construction project with several key figures:

45,000 metres

Square metres for total surface area

235 metres for total length

60,000 cubic metres of concrete was used for the entire construction

11 submarine pens comprising 4 wet docks, and 7 dry docks

15 U-boats (large submarines) could be docked in the base

1943: the base’s active period of operations

1943

the base’s active period of operations

On 15 October 1942, the 12th Unterseeboote Flotille of U-boats was created. It was assigned to the port of Bordeaux and its U-Boat Bunker, which was under construction. During the 22 months of its existence, 43 U-boats were assigned to it in order to carry out attack missions in the Atlantic Ocean, near the American coast, and resupply missions in the Indian Ocean.

1943: the base’s active period of operations

The arrival of the first German submarines, in January 1943, marked a change in the port’s status, which was then a shipyardit became a Kriegsmarinearsenal (naval arms depot). Every time the U-boats returned from their missions they docked in the base for servicing and repairs.

The submarine base was one of the main targets for allied aircraft. The American bombing on 17 May 1943 caused substantial material damage and the death of around 200 civilians. On 26 August 1944, the base was abandoned by the German troops.

The post-war period

1944

The post-war period

Extensively damaged by the war, the district of Bacalan was in part disfigured by the creation of an anti-tank ditch. Furthermore, the access to the docks was blocked by scuttled ships, preventing any allied manoeuvres.

The post-war period

Taken over by the French Navy, the U-Boat Bunker, which was almost intact, was entrusted to the autonomous port of Bordeaux, on 6 June 1945. From the beginning of the 1960s until the end of the 1990s, the units were partly occupied by companies, including the base’s metalworking workshops.

In summer 1999, the new submarine base opened with a multi-disciplinary programme orientated towards the arts (photography exhibitions, musical events, immersive shows, etc.).

The post-war period

Active for just over a year during the Occupation, Bordeaux’s submarine base still evokes the painful memories of the darkest hours of the Port de la Lune (port of the moon). However, since the 1960s, the bunker has attracted artists, filmmakers, plastic artists, and musicians, who have been fascinated by the site’s atmosphere.

The Bassins de Lumières

The City of Bordeaux has entrusted Culturespaces with the management of pens 1 to 4 of the submarine base. Called the ‘Bassins des Lumières’, this part of the base comprises 4 wet docks. The Bassins des Lumières is the largest digital art centre in the world.

The Bassins des Lumières

The Bassins des Lumières offers visitors high-quality visual and audio experiences in exhibitions that are perfectly adapted to the spaces in which they are held, and which are devoted to the major artists in the history of art and contemporary art.

The digital exhibitions are perfectly adapted to the monumental architecture of the submarine base and are reflected in the water of the 4 enormous basins, which are 12 metres deep, 110 metres long, and 22 metres wide, thus adding a new dimension to the immersive experience.

The Bassins des Lumières

Following the creation of the Atelier des Lumières, we are pleased that we have created this enormous digital art centre for the City of Bordeaux. The Bassins des Lumières will offer visitors unforgettable visual and audio experiences in a unique setting, a place for sharing culture that is open to all types of visitors.

Foods That Are Good for Your Liver

Diet plays a key role in maintaining liver health. Many foods contain compounds that have been shown to help improve liver enzymes, protect against fat buildup, and decrease inflammation and oxidative stress.

The liver is responsible for things like producing proteins, cholesterol, and bile to storing vitamins, minerals, and even carbohydrates.

It also breaks down toxins like alcohol, medications, and natural byproducts of metabolism. Keeping your liver in good shape is important for maintaining health.

Best foods to help keep your liver healthy:

1. Coffee

Coffee is one of the best beverages you can drink to promote liver health.

Studies have shown that drinking coffee protects the liver from disease, even among those who already have problems with this organ.

For example, studies have repeatedly shown that drinking coffee helps lower the risk of cirrhosis, or permanent liver damage, in people with chronic liver disease.

Drinking coffee may also help reduce the risk of developing a common type of liver cancer, and it has positive effects on liver disease and inflammation.

It’s even associated with a lower risk of death in people with chronic liver disease, with the greatest benefits seen in those who drink at least 3 cups daily .

These benefits seem to stem from its ability to prevent the buildup of fat and collagen, two of the main markers of liver disease .

Coffee also decreases inflammation and increases levels of the antioxidant glutathione. Antioxidants neutralize harmful free radicals, which are produced naturally in the body and can damage cells.

2. Tea

Tea is widely considered to be beneficial for health, but evidence has shown that it may have particular benefits for the liver.

One review of 15 studies found that green tea reduced levels of liver enzymes in people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Another study had similar findings, reporting that supplementing with green tea extract for 12 weeks significantly reduced liver enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in people with NAFLD.

Furthermore, a 2017 review found that people who drank green tea were less likely to develop liver cancer. The lowest risk was seen in people who drank 4 or more daily cups .

A number of animal studies have also demonstrated the beneficial effects of various types of tea, including matcha, oolong tea, and dark tea.

Interestingly, one animal study even found that Pu-erh tea (普洱茶 Pǔ'ěr chá) extract improved the metabolism of fat in the liver and decreased inflammation in mice fed a high fat diet .

Nevertheless, some people, especially those with liver problems, should exercise caution and talk with a doctor before consuming green tea as a supplement.

That’s because there have been several reports of liver damage resulting from using supplements containing green tea extract .

3. Grapefruit

Grapefruit contains antioxidants that naturally protect the liver. The two main antioxidants found in grapefruit are naringenin and naringin. Several studies have found that both naringenin and naringin can help protect the liver from injury.

The protective effects of grapefruit are known to occur in two ways — by reducing inflammation and protecting cells.

Studies have also shown that these antioxidants can help reduce the development of hepatic fibrosis, a harmful condition in which excessive connective tissue builds up in the liver. This typically results from chronic inflammation .

Naringenin decreased the amount of fat in the liver and increased the number of enzymes necessary to burn fat, which can help prevent excess fat from accumulating .

Lastly, another study found that naringenin could help improve the ability to metabolize alcohol and counteract some of alcohol’s negative effects on the liver.

The current evidence suggests that grapefruit may benefit liver health by helping prevent damage and inflammation.

4. Blueberries and cranberries

Blueberries and cranberries contain anthocyanins, antioxidants that give berries their distinctive colors. They’ve also been linked to many health benefits.

Interestingly, one human study found that taking a cranberry supplement for 6 months improved hepatic steatosis, or fatty liver, in people with NAFLD .

Another study found that the types of antioxidants found commonly in blueberries slowed the development of fibrosis, which is the development of scar tissue, in the livers.

Making these berries a regular part of your diet is a good way to help make sure your liver is supplied with the antioxidants it needs to stay healthy.

5. Grapes

Grapes, especially red and purple grapes, contain various beneficial plant compounds that may benefit liver health.

Studies have found that grapes and grape juice can have various benefits, including :

• lowering inflammation

• preventing cell damage

• increasing antioxidant levels

A small 2010 study on people with NAFLD showed that supplementing with grapeseed extract for 3 months helped improve liver function.

That said, a newer 2022 study suggests that eating grape products doesn’t have a significant effect on liver enzymes and may not help improve liver function . More studies are needed before taking grapeseed extract to promote liver health can be recommended.

6. Prickly pear

7. Beetroot juice

8. Cruciferous vegetables include:

  • broccoli
  • Brussels sprouts
  • cabbage
  • kale
  • cauliflower
9. Nuts are rich in several key nutrients, including :

•healthy fats
•antioxidants
•vitamin E
•beneficial plant compounds

This composition is responsible for several health benefits, especially for heart health, but also potentially for the liver.

10. Fatty fish
11. Olive oil

What can I drink to flush my liver?
Water and more water , daily. See Water Cure formula found in this earlier blog posts.

REPROGRAM YOUR MIND

UNDERSTAND AND TAKE CONTROL OF THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND

The power of the mind is undeniable. Cultivating that complete certainty – that deep belief in yourself – requires understanding how to leverage subconscious mind programming.

WHAT IS THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND?

The subconscious is the part of our minds that makes decisions without our needing to actively think about them. It’s different from the conscious mind, which encompasses the thoughts we know we are having at any given moment. It’s also different from the unconscious mind, which holds past events and experiences that we don’t remember at all.

Learning to play an instrument is a good example of how the subconscious mind works. At first, you need to think about translating the sheet music and moving your fingers to play each note, but as you practice, you find you can pick up any song and play it.

The subconscious mind goes beyond learning new skills. It’s involved in information processing and affects everything we think, say and do. It stores our beliefs and values, determines our memories and monitors the information all around us, deciding what to send to the conscious mind and what to store for later. It affects every moment of our lives – and most of us don’t even know it.

So how long does it take to reprogram your subconscious mind? On average it takes about three to four weeks – but it could take longer. The answer will depend on how deeply ingrained the behavior is that you want to change, as well as your own limiting beliefs.

SHIFTING YOUR MINDSET

To learn how to reprogram your mind for success in the way Tony describes in the video, there are three steps you must take that will shift your mindset and point your focus in the right direction.

STEP 1: DECIDE

The first step you need to take is to gain absolute clarity on what it is you want. Learn how to stop overthinking and focus on your goals. What is your desired outcome? What does unlocking an extraordinary life look like to you? Clarity is power. The more thought you put into this, the more detail you lay out, and the stronger and more powerful your vision will become. This creates a subconscious mind map, giving your brain the tools necessary to turn that vision into reality.

Want to reprogram your mind? Consider an argument with your partner. When in a heated exchange with a loved one, we often lose track of the disagreement itself and focus on being heard – on getting the last word, on winning. You stop watching your tone and being gentle with your partner and begin treating them like an adversary. That’s a quick way to escalate the argument into something much worse.

Instead, stop yourself and ask, “Why am I arguing in the first place?” You aren’t fighting to fight; you are disagreeing about something and want a resolution. When you are distracted by winning, you lose track of the actual problem. Once you remember that, you can shift your focus back to resolving the original problem, effectively reprogramming your brain to use its resources and produce that outcome in that moment.

Subconscious reprogramming starts with deciding what you want – right now and in the future – and focusing on it. Give your brain direction. As Tony says, where focus goes, energy flows. What do you want physically, financially, emotionally and spiritually in your business and in your personal life? Make the decision that you are not willing to settle and that you are not willing to live the way you are living right now. Set your sights on what you want and begin reprogramming your brain.

STEP 2: COMMIT

After you decide what you want, the next step of subconscious reprogramming is committing. Rid your mind of fear and self-doubt. How do you do that? By committing to it and letting it drive you.

Fear is one of the biggest traps that keeps people from taking action. We all have fears – fear of rejection, fear of failure, success, pain or the unknown. If you do nothing, that fear will remain exactly where it is, blocking your path. You will not move, and you will always live in fear. You might not do any worse, but you also won’t do better. And that fear will always be present in the back of your mind, pushing you away from your goals. The lack of action gives the negativity time to poison your thoughts: “It’s a good thing I didn’t try. I never would have made it.” When allowed to spread through your subconscious mind, this fear-based negativity will seep into everything you think about yourself and everything you do.

The only way to deal with fear and reprogram your mind is to face it head-on. You must look it in the eye and take action in spite of it. Are you afraid of failure? Look at it this way: Failure is an education. If you do something and fail, you will know what doesn’t work. You’ll be able to take a more educated, informed approach next time. You’re better off than where you were before.

Reprogramming your brain means breaking through negative chatter like, “I can’t.” Think of it the same way you would build muscle at the gym. At first, it will seem difficult and maybe even taxing. But if you start small and do it every day, you will gradually become stronger. And before long, it will become an effortless habit.

Commit to yourself. Commit to overcoming the negativity. Commit to a better life. When you commit fully, cutting off any other possibility, you will push yourself to the next level and demand more of yourself than anyone else could ever expect. And that is the true power of subconscious mind programming.

STEP 3: RESOLVE

Once you have decided on your path and committed fully, take inventory of your situation. What are your current actions getting you? Direct your mind toward assessing what is working and what isn’t. Make the shifts. Resolve is about finding solutions to whatever may come your way.

A critical part of finding resolve and effectively reprogramming your brain is flexibility. Tunnel vision forces limits on you – you will miss out on opportunities and alternative routes that could lead to incredible benefits. Remember, you are never 100% in control. Think about it: has your life gone according to plan? Probably not. The path you take is never a straight line. And that’s why it’s vital to remain flexible along the way – learning from mistakes, embracing failure and using negativity as a driving force for change. As long as you are making progress, you are going in the right direction.

When you reprogram your mind to focus on resolve, you develop the ability to change your approach to problems as required. Not all obstacles, hurdles or circumstances are the same; each poses its own difficulties, and you can meet those difficulties head-on. True power comes from within, and reprogramming your brain conditions you for success. Frustration becomes a gift, because it means you are on the verge of a breakthrough. Failure becomes a lesson, counseling you on how to be better in the future. Any roadblock becomes an opportunity for you to pivot and find a new creative solution. That is the power of your mind’s dedication to resolve.

SIX TIPS ON HOW TO REPROGRAM YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS

Now that you’re in a powerful, determined state, it’s time to adopt positive habits that will reprogram your mind to have total certainty in itself.

1. ADOPT EMPOWERING BELIEFS

Limiting beliefs hold us back from what we want in life. They can be based on past results, negative events you’ve experienced or a flawed vision of your future. When you address these beliefs and challenge their accuracy, you can replace them with empowering beliefs to live by. What does this look like? It could be replacing “My parents were divorced, so it’s in my genetic code to not have a happy relationship,” to “I deserve a healthy relationship with someone I love.” When you change your self-talk, you change your world.

2. EMBRACE THE BEAUTY OF UNCERTAINTY

We are not in control of life – the only thing we can control is our actions and reactions. When we embrace this concept, we take back our power to shape our existence and reprogram our minds. Let go of the need for certainty and embrace the beauty of uncertainty. When we focus on choosing trust, giving without thinking about what we’re getting in return and living consciously, we can let go and enjoy the journey.

3. FOCUS ON GRATITUDE

When you choose gratitude and appreciation over criticism and fear, you shine a light on the positive. This rewires your brain to notice more of what you have and less of what you don’t. It also allows you to be curious about the events in your life as you no longer view them with suspicion. You can embrace change and let it in, appreciating that life never stays the same.

4. WATCH YOUR ENVIRONMENT

When reprogramming your brain for success, you have to limit negative influences in your environment. Your subconscious mind is constantly absorbing information from outside sources and using that information to form beliefs that shape how you think and behave. Negativity from the daily news, toxic people and social media can have a profound effect on your subconscious mind without you even knowing it.

As you work on how to reprogram your mind, remember that proximity is power. Surround yourself with positive, supportive people. Seek out books, videos and music that lifts you up and empowers you. Over time, you will find that your subconscious mind is more positive and encouraging and that negative thoughts have greatly diminished.

5. VISUALIZE

Remember the basketball players? They learned how to reprogram their minds through visualization. By picturing in their minds the perfect free throw over and over, they were able to program their brains to actually make those shots once they got on the court.

What does your perfect day look like? How do you want your big presentation at work to go? How exactly do you want a first date to go? Pick something you are truly committed to making a reality and spend 10-15 minutes each day visualizing it as if it has already happened. Your subconscious mind will absorb the feelings in your images as if they were real, giving you the inner confidence you need to make them come true.

6. BIOHACK YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS MIND WITH BINAURAL BEATS

Biohacking is using experimentation and technology to improve your health and wellness. Biohacking can involve red light therapy to increase health, adopting an intermittent fasting plan to trigger weight loss or adding supplements to your diet to supercharge your health. One powerful way to reprogram your mind through biohacking is by harnessing the power of music. Our brainwaves respond differently to various types of music and we can induce certain feelings with the right beats.

Binaural beats involve playing two tones at different frequencies to induce certain states of mind. It’s been proven that our subconscious mind absorbs information better when we are in a relaxed state, so you can use binaural beats to trigger alpha brainwaves.

HOW TO KNOW IF IT’S WORKING

Subconscious mind programming can be tricky – by its very definition, you can’t always tell what it’s thinking. But there are ways to tell if your efforts to reprogram your mind are working.

You’re becoming more self-aware. You must be aware of your subconscious mind in order to reprogram it. Are you getting better at stopping negative self-talk and controlling your emotions? Are you able to shift your focus at will? These are signs of self-awareness.

You take more risks. Everyone has different risk tolerances, but limiting beliefs cause us not to take any risks at all. When you reprogram your mind, you’ll increase your confidence and be ready to get out of your comfort zone.

You attract positivity. As said, “Whatever you consistently think about and focus upon you move toward.” That’s the law of attraction: reprogramming your mind to think more positively can actually bring more positive things into your life.

Part 2 : QiGong , Energy, Aliveness

We don't want our energy to get stuck or staggered. We want it to circulate. We want to go with the flow of the energy . And so flow means that we

我们不希望我们的能量卡住或错开。 我们希望它流通。 我们要顺应能量的流动。 所以流动意味着我们

drop into the moment. We connect to the energy. And then we ride the current from one moment to another. It becomes cohesive. So, it's not just about dropping into the moment. I'm here oh that

投入当下。 我们连接到能量。 然后我们乘着电流从 片刻之间。 它变得有凝聚力。 所以,这不仅仅是沉浸在当下。 我在这里哦那个

moment's gone. Now I'm here again. Well, that moment's gone , right , And we flicker in and out of the moment. When we drop into flow state, we begin to get this cohesive feeling. You

片刻过去了。 现在我又来了。 好吧,那一刻已经过去了,对吧,我们在这一刻忽隐忽现。 当我们进入心流状态时,我们 开始获得这种凝聚力的感觉。 你

ride the wave of energy. You ride the wave. We ride the wave. You're co-creating .

驾驭能量波。 你乘风破浪。 我们乘风破浪。 你正在共同创造。

You're collaborating with the energy that's all around you. So invisible life force energy. What is that. That is the mind, that is the heart, that is love, that is

你正在与你周围的能量合作。 所以无形的生命力能量。 那是什么。 那是思想,那是心,那是爱,那是

connection because we can't say here, when I get home from a fest, look what I did. Here's what I connected with.

Here's the love I brought home. It's an experience and everything in life is an experience.

连接,因为我们不能在这里说,当我从节日回到家时,看看我做了什么。 这就是我所联系的。

 这是我带回家的爱。 这是一种体验,生活中的一切都是一种体验。

Your mind is an experience. We get to experience the thoughts. We get to experience the emotions but they come and they go. And so

你的头脑是一种体验。 我们开始体验这些想法。 我们开始体验情绪,但它们来了又去。 所以

key to this practice is letting go and relaxing. Relaxation is a principle of letting go, so that we can actually be connected to something higher . We can be connected to

这种做法的关键是放手和放松。 放松是一种放下的原则, 这样我们就可以真正连接到更高的东西。 我们可以连接到

the divine. We can be connected to nature. We can be connected to ourselves. And what the world is calling for, right now, connection,

神圣的。 我们可以与自然相连。 我们可以与自己联系起来。 世界现在需要的是联系。

deeper connection. And when you get in touch with energy, we see the connections not the separations because right now with objective western ways of thinking we

更深层次的联系。 当你接触到能量时,我们看到的是联系而不是分离,因为现在用客观的西方思维方式我们

see the objects. We see the physical energy. There's a space between me and you.

There's a space between the floor and the ceiling. I only see the floor in the ceiling.

看到的对象。 我们看到了物理能量。 我和你之间有一个空间。

 地板和天花板之间有一个空间。 我只看到天花板上的地板。

I only see the objects but there's space. There's invisible energy in this room. The invisible energy, that's how technology works , right. Our technology is working with invisible space. 我只看到物体但是有空间。 这个房间里有看不见的能量。无形的能量,这就是技术的运作方式,对吧。 我们的技术正在处理不可见的空间。

So qigong is an ancient technology. Should we call it technoloqi. Technoloqi, just made up a new word, okay. Technoloqi because we work with who you are to optimize your energy.

所以气功是一门古老的技术。 我们应该称之为技术吗? Technoloqi,刚造了一个新词,好吧。 Technoloqi 因为我们与您一起工作以优化您的能量。

So these ancient masters, looking at how to optimize the potential of themselves. So if we say what is 所以这些上古高手,看的是如何优化自身的潜力。 所以如果我们说什么是

What is May Day?

What is May Day? For the most part, the opposite of capitalism.

May Day, celebrated by workers across the globe as International Labor Day, falls on May 1st.

But you'd be forgiven if that's news to you. While the day traces its origins to laborers' fight for a shorter work day and humane working life balance environment.

International Labor Day — also called International Workers' Day — in May 1st stems from a resistance to emboldening worldwide working-class unity. 🤝

The ruling class did not want to have a very active labor force connected internationally. The principle of national patriotism was used against the principle of working-class unity or trade union unity.

Workers commemorating the day, which in recent years has ranged from mass marching for labor rights to open air concerts in public parks.

The meaning of that day keeps changing.

History.

The traditional May Day / Labour Day is an ancient European export.

If you instead associate May Day with baskets of flowers, dancing around maypoles, or simply, the start of summer, those May Day celebrations recall the holiday's much earlier origins. Before May Day was adopted as a day to champion workers, its roots belonged to pagan tradition.

The springtime tradition was inherited from pagan tribes in Ireland and Scandinavia,  borrowing ancient Roman practices celebrating the Earth's flowering season.

When the first Europeans came to North America and erected a maypole in Quincy, Mass., they imbibed copious amounts of beer and danced with the Indigenous people.

The Puritans of Boston put an end to it by military force. And yet this tradition of May Day as a time of dancing and play and pleasure persisted right into many parts of the world today.

At the end of the day, no matter whatever your version of May Day, if any, or none, it remains a time meant to celebrate togetherness.

Inevitably, history shows, that May Day comradery has been met with suppression.

May Day in America has bloody origins

May Day in America was born out of the 8-hour workday movement in 19th-century, Chicago. At the time, as the capitalist system gained a foothold in industrial-era America, working-class conditions had worsened. A 16-hour shift wasn't unusual for workers at the time.

Decades before the 8-hour work-day became the country's norm, the organization now known as the American Federation of Labor set May 1, 1886, as the date that workers nationwide should go on strike to demand the 8-hour workday.

The reason was that the decade before there had been terrible unemployment ... and yet new technology had made the employer richer.

The workers followed through. On that May date, anarchists and labor activists in Chicago began a multi-day strike in what became known as the Haymarket affair of 1886.

By May 3, the protests turned violent when police — "which were basically the armed force of the capitalist masters," attacked workers demonstrating near the McCormick Reaper plant.

The following day, a meeting held in the city's Haymarket Square turned even bloodier. Again, the police intervened, triggering clashes that killed both officers and civilians.

A bomb exploded among police ranks in the melee, but historians say it's unclear whether it was intended for the police or the crowd of civilians.

There was a trial of eight men who were found guilty of conspiracy to murder. Even though no evidence was ever produced that any of them had any relationship to this bomb, and four of them were eventually hanged despite a worldwide campaign in England, Europe, Mexico to save their lives.

The influential words of August Spies, one of the convicted men, who just before his execution cried out the famous words: "There will come a time when our silence will be more powerful than the voices you strangle today."

His words "swept the globe,". Throughout Latin America, throughout Europe and in North America, to many, the day became this holiday to celebrate working people.

To honor the Chicago workers, the International Socialist Conference in 1889 named May Day a labor holiday, birthing what many nations now call International Workers' Day.

But in the U.S., anti-communist attitudes during the Cold War, as well as opposition to working-class unity, led authorities to suppress May Day's association with labor movements.

Labor Day became an official federal holiday in 1894, thanks to President Grover Cleveland. At its core, the day is meant to celebrate the common worker.

US President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th president of the United States from 1953 to 1961, instead declared May 1st as "Law Day" — dedicated to the principles of government under law — and Labor Day is now celebrated in September.

Despite International Labor Day's U.S. origins, many citizens globally, still view May Day as strictly a holiday enjoyed by "communist countries."

In the former Soviet Union, May Day was an occasion to honor workers' contributions with giant parades in Red Square, a tradition that has dwindled in the decades since — a fading remnant of the Bolshevik Revolution that's lost its meaning in modern Russia.

Some of the workers of Czarist Russia also celebrated May Day, but quickly within 10 years, say by the 1930s, it becomes for the Soviet Union a day to display military hardware, military weapons.

As for workers this year, 2023, I mused, 🤔 how it will be celebrated this day?

I'm not sure. I think it'll be exciting to pay attention to see the ways in which its history is remembered.

For a day that celebrates reform and revolution, political discussions and petitions, there's something in it for everyone. Well, maybe not.

There's nothing in it for the capitalist class.

Labor Day should be a moment when we all reflect the critical contributions of working class people to the political, economic and cultural development of this country.

As workers worldwide face growing levels of wage and income inequality, as well as workplace challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, there are lessons we can learn from the past.

The labor question: How can our country balance the need for corporations with labor democracy?

Workers start to look to unions and workplace protections to improve their station conditions. This proved monumental for worker rights.

Upholding of the Act which protects workers' rights to form and join unions.

Workers' right allowed to organize for the purpose of collective bargaining.

Today, unions are still trying to expand national labor law with the Protecting the Right to Organize Act .

Unfair wages and long working hours.
