Fava Beans

Hi,
Fava beans — or broad beans — are green legumes that come in pods.

They have a slightly sweet, earthy flavor and are eaten by people all over the world.

Fava beans are loaded with vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein. They’re thought to offer impressive health effects, such as improved motor function and immunity.

Here are 10 health benefits of fava beans, backed by science.

1. Loaded With Nutrients

For their relatively small size, fava beans pack an incredible amount of nutrients.

In particular, they’re rich in plant protein, folate and several other vitamins and minerals. They’re also loaded with soluble fiber that can aid digestion and lower cholesterol levels .

One cup (170 grams) of cooked fava beans has :

•Calories: 187 calories

•Carbs: 33 grams

•Fat: Less than 1 gram

•Protein: 13 grams

•Fiber: 9 grams

•Folate: 40% of the Daily Value (DV)

•Manganese: 36% of the DV

•Copper: 22% of the DV

•Phosphorous: 21% of the DV

•Magnesium: 18% of the DV

•Iron: 14% of the DV

•Potassium: 13% of the DV

•Thiamine (vitamin B1) and Zinc: 11% of the DV

In addition, fava beans provide smaller amounts of almost all other B vitamins, calcium and selenium.

2. May Help With Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms

Fava beans are rich in levodopa (L-dopa), a compound that your body converts to the neurotransmitter dopamine.

Parkinson’s disease causes the death of dopamine-producing brain cells, leading to tremors, issues with motor function and difficulty walking. These symptoms are usually treated with medications that contain L-dopa.

Therefore, eating fava beans may help with symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, though research is limited.

A small study in 11 people with Parkinson’s disease found that eating 1.5 cups (250 grams) of fava beans after 12 hours without medication had a comparable positive effect on blood dopamine levels and motor function as L-dopa drugs .

Another study in 6 adults with Parkinson’s disease showed that consuming 100–200 grams — about 1–1.75 cups — of fava beans with the anti-Parkinson’s medication carbidopa improved symptoms as well as traditional drug combinations.

While these results are promising, more research is needed. Keep in mind that even though fava beans are rich in L-dopa, they should not be used in place of medications.

3. May Help Prevent Birth Defects

Fava beans are loaded with folate, a nutrient that promotes healthy fetal development.

Folate is critical for creating cells and organs. An expecting mother needs additional folate from foods and supplements to reduce the risk of neural tube defects, or issues with the development of her infant’s brain and spinal cord.Trusted Sourc, 9Trusted Source

In fact, it’s estimated that more than 260,000 infants born worldwide in 2015 had neural tube defects, many of which may have been preventable by adequate maternal folate intake .Trusted Source.

One study in more than 23,000 women found that the incidence of brain and spinal cord issues was 77% lower in infants of mothers who had the highest daily intake of dietary folate, compared to children of women with the lowest intake .Trusted Sourc.

With 40% of the DV for folate in just one cup (170 grams), fava beans are an excellent choice for pregnant women.

4. Contain Immune-Boosting Nutrients.

Regularly eating fava beans may boost your immune system.

In particular, they’re rich in compounds that may enhance antioxidant activity.  Antioxidants are critical to your body’s immune defense, as they fight free radicals that may lead to cell damage and disease.

One test-tube study found that treating human lung cells with extracts from fava beans increased their antioxidant activity by up to 62.5%.

In addition, fava beans contain compounds that have been shown to enhance the ability of the powerful antioxidant  glutathione in human cells and delay cellular aging.

However, these studies were conducted on isolated cells treated with extracts from fava beans. It is unclear whether fava beans have the same immune-boosting effects in people when eaten as part of a regular diet.

5. Beneficial for Bone Health.

Fava beans are rich in  manganese and copper — two nutrients that may prevent bone loss.

Their exact role in bone health is unclear, but rat studies suggest that manganese and copper deficiencies may lead to decreased bone formation and increased calcium excretion.

Human research also suggests that manganese and copper are vital to bone strength.

A one-year study in post- menopausal women with weak bones found that taking a supplement with manganese and copper, as well as vitamin D, calcium and other nutrients, improved bone mass.

Additional research has shown that manganese and copper in combination with calcium and zinc may prevent bone loss in healthy older women.

6. May Improve Symptoms of Anemia.

Eating iron-rich fava beans may help with symptoms of anemia.

Iron is needed to produce hemoglobin, the protein that enables your red blood cells to carry oxygen through your body. An iron deficiency can lead to anemia, characterized by fatigue, weakness, dizziness and shortness of breath.

One study in 200 young women found that those who reported an insufficient dietary intake of iron were six times more likely to have anemia compared to those with adequate intake .

Regularly eating fava beans and other iron-rich plant foods may increase blood iron levels and improve anemia symptoms.

However, fava beans contain a form of iron that is better absorbed with vitamin C from foods, such as citrus fruits or bell peppers.

Furthermore, fava beans are not recommended for people with the genetic disorder glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, as eating these beans may lead to a different type of blood issue called hemolytic anemia.

7. May Improve High Blood Pressure

Fava beans are high in nutrients that can improve heart health.

In particular, they contain magnesium and potassium that may relax blood vessels and prevent high blood pressure.

Several studies have shown that the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) Diet, an eating pattern that recommends foods high in potassium and magnesium, helps decrease high blood pressure.

In addition, a 10-year study in 28,349 women found that those with the highest dietary intake of magnesium were less likely to develop high blood pressure than those with lower intakes of this mineral.

Based on this research, eating a diet that contains fava beans and other foods rich in magnesium and potassium may lower blood pressure and improve heart health.

8. May Aid Weight Loss

Fava beans may be good for your waistline.

A one-cup (170-gram) serving of fava beans provides 13 grams of protein and 9 grams of fiber — at only 187 calories .

A diet rich in protein and fiber may improve feelings of fullness, which may result in a lower calorie intake and weight loss.

One small study in 19 adults found that a diet with 30% of calories from protein increased feelings of fullness and decreased daily calorie intake by 441 calories on average, compared to a diet with the same number of calories but only 15% from protein .

Another four-year study in 522 people observed that those who ate a high-fiber diet with more than 15 grams of fiber per 1,000 calories lost over five pounds (2.4 kg) more than those who ate a diet with less fiber.

Thus, adding protein- and fiber-rich fava beans to your diet may help you reach your weight loss goals.

9. May Help Lower Cholesterol

Most of the fiber in fava beans is soluble and may help lower cholesterol levels.

Soluble fiber may promote healthy bowel movements by absorbing water in your gut, forming a gel-like substance and softening your stool.

It can also bind to and remove cholesterol from your body. In fact, several studies have shown that soluble fiber may help lower blood cholesterol levels in both healthy adults and those with elevated levels .

A three-month study in 53 healthy adults found that those who ate two additional grams of soluble fiber per day experienced a 12.8% decrease in “bad” LDL cholesterol, while the group that ate less fiber did not have any significant changes in their LDL levels .

Additionally, a review of 10 studies focussing on the effect of fiber-rich legumes on cholesterol levels found that diets that included this type of food were associated with modest decreases in total and “bad” LDL cholesterol levels.

If you’re trying to improve your cholesterol levels, adding fava beans to your diet may be beneficial.

10. Versatile and Easy to Add to Your Diet.

Fava beans can be a delicious addition to meals and snacks.

To prepare them, start by removing their inedible green pods. Next, boil the beans for 30 seconds before transferring them to a bowl with ice water. This will soften the waxy outer coating, making it easier to peel off.

Peeled fava beans can be steamed and tossed in olive oil and seasonings to be eaten whole, or smashed to be eaten on top of bread or in other dishes.

To roast fava beans, boil them for 30 minutes, drain them and then add olive oil and seasonings. Spread the beans on a baking sheet and roast for another 30 minutes at 375℉ (190℃).

Cooked fava beans can be added to salads, rice dishes, risottos, pastas, soups and pizzas.

The Bottom Line

Fava beans are loaded with nutrients and may offer impressive health benefits.

Eating these beans regularly may have benefits for symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, help prevent birth defects, boost immunity, aid weight loss and lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

However, research is limited and more studies on the effects of fava beans on human health are needed.

Nevertheless, they’re an excellent and versatile addition to a healthy, balanced diet.

Hakka Chinese People

The Hakka – Famous 'Kicked Out' Chinese People.

I am a pure Hakka Chinese. The Hakka people migrated southwards in China several times because of various undesirable stuff happening – such as foreign invaders coming a-slaughtering.

The locals didn’t like their turf being stepped on, and called these people ‘Hakka’ or ‘outsiders'. The name stuck, and the outsiders started referring to themselves as Hakka.

With a large presence among the Overseas Chinese, the Hakka with their long acquaintance with persecution, exile and forced migration represent an epitome of Chinese hardiness and survival.

Now, the Hainanese are known for their cooking and opening of restaurants and coffee-shops.

The Hokkien are famous for bak kut teh (pork ribs soup) and char kway teow dishes. And also for songs and parodies that somehow aren’t as funny in any other dialect. Case in point: Ah Long Bukit Beruntung.

What about the Hakka, what are they well known for? Apparently, the Hakka are famous trouble-makers! (They even have a set of martial arts, the better to wreak vengeance upon their enemies).

I found out from my dad that Hakkas have produced a lot of great and famous men, including a lot of ‘outsiders’ who were controversial and noisy enough to get themselves kicked even further out! It seems like even after migrating once or more, prominent Hakkas these days still have to ‘migrate’ the way their proto-Hakka ancestors did!

Even the Wikipedia entry’s introduction says it! – The Hakka have had a significant influence on the course of Chinese and overseas Chinese history: in particular, they have been a source of revolutionary and political leaders.

And so, here I present to you some great Hakkas – many of whom were unceremoniously kicked out of their places, yet managed to thrive nonetheless.

Lee Kuan Yew, who had a Hakka great-grandfather, had his resourceless Singapore kicked out of Malaysia just 2 years after joining it to gain independence from the British. Singapore today has overtaken Malaysia, with a currency more than 3 times as strong. (  SGD to MYR Chart, Singapore Dollar to Malaysian Ringgit, 1 SGD = 3.15471 MYR, May 8, 2022)

Thaksin Shinawatra (there’s a surprise!), also with a Hakka great-grandfather, was ousted in a bloodless military coup while he was overseas. After which he went to London and bought the Manchester City Football Club.

Sun Yat-sen (likely a Hakka), the Father of Modern China who helped overthrow the Qing dynasty, and co-founded the Kuomintang was the first provisional President of the Republic of China, but was later repeatedly rebelled against and was repeatedly exiled.

Deng Xiaoping, a leader of Communist China, who brought the nation out of the vagaries of the Cultural Revolution into prosperity, but was also the one who cracked down on the infamous Tiananmen Square protests. Hakkas were also among otehr top posts in the echelons of Communist power.

Yap Ah Loy, Kapitan Cina whose leadership through unrest and violent clashes and later development of Kuala Lumpur helped it become the capital city of Malaya.

And of course, that most looked-up to Hakka, Hong Xiuquan, leader of the Taiping Rebellion. Hong Xiuquan took control of large areas of Central and Southern China and set up a Christian-based theocracy – the Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace. The exams for officials were even based on Bible knowledge!

Ironically, his Qing opponents got help from the ostensibly Christian French and British to defeat the Heavenly Kingdom and restore the status quo (namely Confucianism, which 100 years later would replaced by atheistic Communism).

Then again, Hong Xiuquan had quite the unique doctrines… Such as that Jesus was not divine but merely God’s first son, and Hong Xiuquan was God’s second son and thus Jesus’ literal younger brother! But apart from that, the Heavenly Kingdom strove for some pretty admirable reformations – if badly carried out and brutally enforced (and I’m not saying that just because I’m a Hakka).

In fact, what with the classlessness and socialization, the later Communists would definitely have approved of the Heavenly Kingdom – just replacing Hong with Mao, and God with man.

Throw in the Hai San of the Larut Wars, and it looks like Hakkas pretty much stir up trouble wherever they go! Hey, I’m blogging controversial aren’t I? Need any more proof of Hakka meddlesomeness and mischief making? :p

Anyway, Hakka leader Chung Keng Quee later was a signatory of the Pangkor Treaty that ended the fighting (and gave the British a foot/strangle hold in Perak). And from that treaty, the town of Larut was renamed – Hakka drum roll please – Taiping !

Fight Breast Cancer the Natural Way

Among women the world over, there aren’t many things more dreaded than breast cancer. This deadly disease not only takes a significant toll on the patient, but also all of the loved ones in their life. Most women have at least a rudimentary knowledge of the breast cancer screening options available to them, but did you know that there are also some natural ways in which you can protect yourself from breast cancer?

Let’s have a look at some of the best ways you can keep your body, and especially your breast tissue, healthy:

Add More Fish Oil To Your Diet

About three years ago, a very influential report was published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. According to the data presented in this report, women who had added fish oil supplements in their diet showed a 32 percent reduction in risks associated with cancer. Fish oil is an excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids, a type of fat that is touted for its many amazing health benefits.

Remember to Stay Active

It is very important to stay active in your everyday life, so this means doing more of whatever it is that will keep you moving and active (cycling, swimming, running, or even walking). A study that was published in BMC Cancer showed how women who got at least seven hours of exercise a week were 16 percent less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer.

More Tea Please!

Tea is a beverage which has also been long touted for its wide range of health benefits. In fact, research from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville has shown that the regular consumption of tea could reduce a person’s risk of developing breast cancer by as much as 12 percent. But with so many types of tea available, which one is the best to drink? While it is hard to go wrong with tea, green tea has the highest concentration polyphenols, a potent antioxidants that capable of fighting off dangerous free radicals.

Load Up on the Fruits and Veggies!

The subject of a number of recent articles, cruciferous vegetables could be one of the best foods for fighting off breast cancer. According to the American Institute of Cancer Research, foods like brussel sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage can prevent the development of cancer before it can take root in the patient’s breast. Other recommended vegetables include dark leafy greens like kale, spinach, and collards. Fruits should also make up a good part of your diet as well. Don’t forget to eat plenty of berries, citrus, and cherries. The best way to eat your fruits and veggies are either raw or you can have them steamed, as this helps preserve those cancer-fighting properties.

Avoid Needless Exposure to Chemicals

Marissa Weiss, the acting president of BreastCancer.org and an established physician, recommends avoiding products that are made from plastic, a difficult task in today’s world. Instead, she suggests opting for products that are made from ceramic, glass, and stainless steel where possible. Cancer clinical studies have indicated that specific chemicals, most of which are found in plastic, appear to unbalance the body’s hormones and can damage the breast tissue.

Cut Out More of the Fats

Diets that are too high in saturated or trans fats have become an all too common problem in the United States. There are actually plenty of healthy alternatives likes monounsaturated fats that are the best way to go. Next time you are at the store, look for olive oil or other cooking oils derived from seeds and nuts. These oils provide a healthy source of selenium, an essential mineral in the prevention of cancer.

As you can see, there are plenty of steps that you can take in order to protect yourself from breast cancer. What’s more, none of these are that demanding in the end. Just remember the essentials, a healthy diet (that provides the body with plenty of antioxidants and omega-3’s) coupled with an active lifestyle can go a long way to ensuring a long and healthy life.

–Jabbed with Pfizer ,3rd June 2021.

She Died, 4th June 2021 – within 29 hours of the Vaccine.

Doreen Chan Yoke Chew – Pfizer Death Victim.

Andrew telling his Mum's Story:

Mum went for her first vaccine on 3rd June 2021. Everything seemed fine except for the sore arm. On 4th June, at around 7pm she was even chatting with my Dad, but around 7:15pm, she collapsed. Dad called 995 and they guided him on the phone to do chest compressions. Fifteen minutes later, paramedics arrived, they did some emergency procedures and took her to the hospital.

I rushed down to the hospital and waited outside the resuscitation room, with hope that she’ll be fine, praying and sending positive intentions. One hour passed. The doctor came out, when he started talking, I already knew… tears rolled uncontrollably. Mum passed on at 9pm.

Can you imagine how that felt?

Subsequently, the police investigation officer started to ask about foul play and pre-existing conditions, saying that these case notes would determine if the coroner decides to have an autopsy.

I then said to the officer, why isn’t the focus of the inquiry the Pfizer Vaccine, which my mum had yesterday? Thankfully, I’m glad that the points I raised in the report led to the coroner doing the autopsy. But… the question in my mind was still, will they conclude that my mum’s death is caused by the vaccine?

When the death certificate came out, the counter staff simply wanted me to sign off, take the certificate and leave. Then I asked, what was the cause of death? The counter staff pointed to the certificate saying it’s Ischaemic Heart Disease. I asked, what does that mean? She asked another senior officer to attend to me and that officer answered me saying it means it’s a “heart attack”. But I questioned again, is the heart attack caused by the Pfizer Vaccine? She answered, that can only be answered by the pathologist. I then asked, can I speak to the pathologist? She answered, you need to talk to your investigation officer to submit an inquiry to get the court to approve an inquiry.

It looked like I wasn’t going to get my answer from the counter staff. I then called the investigation officer, he said he’ll submit the inquiry on my behalf but I need to be prepared to wait because Covid related inquiries currently have four months waiting time.

Even though the anomaly was the vaccine, I knew I was not going to get my answer.

At my mum’s wake, a friend of mine said his uncle also passed away shortly after taking the vaccine. I was starting to get suspicious. Is there a pattern?

My dad also posted his story on the government’s REACH feedback unit and several netizens also reported cases of death or permanent disability after the vaccine.

But here’s the thing I’m asking now. Is it possible that Covid Vaccine related injuries or deaths are classified as something else right now? That’s why, if you know of more of such cases of death or disability after the vaccine they need to be reported.

I just want to seek the truth and hope that in my efforts, I can help other affected parties seek their truths, together with me.

Please share this.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Please also look at the Story of the ‘Young Family’ as their mother also died within 8 hours of the Pfizer Vaccine in Singapore.

 Doreen Chan Yoke Chew——

–Di suntik dengan Pfizer, 3hb Jun 2021.

Dia Meninggal Dunia, 4hb Jun 2021 – dalam masa 29 jam selepas Vaksin.

Doreen Chan Yoke Chew – Mangsa Kematian Pfizer.

  Andrew memberitahu Kisah Ibunya:

  Terima kasih atas perhatian anda.

"You're Gonna Be Ok" lyrics

I know it's all you've got to just, be strong

And it's a fight just to keep it together, together

I know you think, that you are too far gone

But hope is never lost

Hope is never lost

Hold on, don't let go

Hold on, don't let go

Just take, one step, closer

Put one foot in front of the other

You'll, get through this

Just follow the light in the darkness

You're gonna be ok

I know your heart is heavy from those nights

Just remember that you're a fighter, a fighter

You never know just what tomorrow holds

And you're stronger than you know

Stronger than you know

Hold on, don't let go

Hold on, don't let go

Just take, one step, closer

Put one foot in front of the other

You'll, get through this

Just follow the light in the darkness

One step, closer

Put one foot in front of the other

You'll, get through this

Just follow the light in the darkness

You're gonna be ok

And when the night, is closing in

Don't give up and don't give in

This won't last, it's not the end, it's not the end

You're gonna be ok

When the night, is closing in

Don't give up and don't give in

This won't last, it's not the end, it's not the end

You're gonna be ok

Stand In The Light

 by Jordan Smith

Stand in the light and be seen as we are

Didn't I tell you I hear what you say?

Never look back as you're walking away

Carry the music, the memories and keep them inside

You

Laugh every day

Don't stop those tears from falling

Down

This is who I am inside

This is who I am, I'm not gonna hide

'Cause the greatest risk we'll ever take is by far

To stand in the light and be seen as we are

To stand in the light and be seen as we are

With courage and kindness hold on to your faith

You get what you give and its never too late

To reach for the branch and climb up leaving sadness behind

You

Fight hard for love

We can never give enough

This is who I am inside

This is who I am, I'm not gonna hide

'Cause the greatest risk we'll ever take is by far

To stand in the light and be seen as we are

To stand in the light and be seen as we are

Riding the storms that come raging towards us we dive

Holding our breath as we break through the surface

With arms open wide

With arms open wide

This is who I am inside

This is who I am, I'm not gonna hide

'Cause the greatest risk we'll ever take is by far

To stand in the light and be seen as we are

To stand in the light and be seen as we are

'Cause the greatest risk we'll ever take is by far

To stand in the light and be seen as we are

To stand in the light and be seen as we are

To stand in the light and be seen as we are
