Where stress really comes from, and how to live a happier and healthier life.
Stress does not stem from external circumstances or a primordial fight-or-flight response to danger. Rather, it has to do with how one perceives one's circumstances. Look at some common challenges today and offers numerous insights into how to overcome them and grow healthier. This book is available at Singapore National Library Board's public libraries, call number : English section 155.9042 BER. (author Andrew Bernstein)
Just as a physical contraction produces physical pain, a mental contraction produces mental pain. This stress tells you there has been a disruption in your subconscious thought process and your mind has contracted away from the flow of life.
Stress is not a bad thing, just as pain is not a bad thing. They are both important signals.
The more stress you have in your life, the more contracted beliefs you have in your subconscious mind (about money, success, love, God, salvation, friendship, etc). We have been taught since young that different emotional states are produced by different circumstances, but the truth is, your emotions are produced by your beliefs.
That is why different people can be exposed to the exact same circumstances and have very different experiences. One person might see a situation as dangerous, which leads to a strong contraction and stress. Another person, seeing it as an opportunity, would be unfazed, and yet another person might even find it enjoyable.
When you see people who remain calm during so-called stressful situations, you might wonder what they are doing that you are not. But the real question to ask is : What are you doing that they are not ? And the answer is : You are having certain counter-factual thoughts.
A stress-free (is not possible in reality) life is not about trying to stay calm. Calm is your baseline state, and you contract away from it because of false beliefs. From this perspective, the opposite of stress is not relaxation - it is education in the truth, releasing the contractions by having insights.
Releasing contracted thoughts through insight is completely natural. You shall know the TRUTH and the TRUTH shall set you free again. Truth shall be your new calm baseline. And the more directly you can pinpoint the core of the contraction in your mind, the more powerful the insight will be.
I AM THE WAY< THE TRUTH< AND THE LIFE.

reasons to quit coffee drinking habit
While the list of health benefits of coffee seems pretty impressive, there are some adverse effects of this drink as well that you should be aware of.
Adverse Health Effects of Coffee
* Addictive – Those who drink coffee regularly know how addictive it can be. Most people feel extremely weak and lethargic if they do not get their daily dose of coffee. Quitting coffee can cause severe withdrawal symptoms such as headache, fatigue, difficulty concentrating and depression.
* Weight Gain – Apart from the rich layer of cream and sugar that is added to your java, there are other reasons why coffee can lead to weight gain. Caffeine stimulates the production of stress hormones in the body, which stimulates appetite and craving for high-calorie foods. Although caffeine is known to assist with short-term weight loss, in the longer run heavy consumption is more likely to lead to weight gain.
* Anxiety – As mentioned earlier, caffeine can over-stimulate the central nervous system causing anxiety and jitters. Drinking more than 4 cups of coffee each day can exhaust the adrenal glands, decrease resistance to stress and make you more susceptible to diseases.
* Heartburn – Coffee is known to trigger the secretion of stomach acids, resulting in bouts of indigestion and heartburn. In people with a history of stomach problems, even decaffeinated coffee can lead to heartburn.
* Hypoglycemia – Caffeine is known to trigger a release of glycogen by the liver, causing an imbalance in blood sugar levels. This condition also known as Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) can lead to weakness, sweating, nervousness and heart palpitations.
* Fertility – Excessive consumption of Caffeine is responsible for a variety of fertility problems including infertility. It has even been associated with an increased risk of miscarriage. Numerous studies have revealed that caffeine consumption by pregnant women can lead to low birth weight.
* Osteoporosis – Excessive intake of coffee interferes with the proper absorption of nutrients and minerals by the bones, increasing the risk of osteoporosis. A study done on post-menopausal women found that drinking 4 or more cups of coffee per day could lead to decreased bone density. However adding extra milk to your latte is one way to prevent weakening of bones.
* Dehydration – Coffee is a potent diuretic and having it in excess can lead to dehydration. A lot of people who have more than 5-6 cups of coffee per day complain of dehydration and other associated health disorders. Dehydration also dries out the skin, making it more prone to wrinkles and stretch marks.
Though not entirely harmful, coffee is not innocent either and you should be aware of the health effects of this drink. Never rape your own body health ever again, try water instead.

Is your mother feeding you animal milk? STOP!
Milk on cereals, milk in our desserts, milk in beverages and so on – anywhere you go, there is no escaping from milk. And for most of us, milk brings back childhood memories – it was after all our first food. However with the recent controversies surrounding milk, one begins to wonder if drinking milk really is safe anymore.
Before we begin hunting for the truth about milk, let us understand what milk really is: Milk is a translucent liquid secreted in the mammary glands of all mammals during the lactation period. In simpler terms, milk is a nutrient for the new borns. The milk of every species is specific to needs of their offspring, which explains why cow’s milk is so rich in proteins, while a human mother’s milk contains more of antibodies and essential fatty acids.
A wide range of studies suggest that human milk is extremely rich in essential fatty acids, especially Linoleic acid while animal milk has none. Reason is simple: cow’s milk is not designed for humans but for calves.
Cow’s milk, both regular and organic contains up to 59 active hormones, high fat content and hundreds of allergens. And if these were not enough, milk from cows and goats contains high amount of herbicides, pesticides, antibiotics, blood, pus, and a variety of bacteria and viruses.
Sure, homogenization and pasteurization can kill most of the bacteria, but these processes also destroy the nutrients present in the milk. What is left behind is nothing more than a ‘dead beverage’ with high amount of pesticides and other dangerous chemicals in it. Is this what you want to feed your body with?
With that said, the nutritional advantage of milk cannot be ignored either. Researchers at University of Tennessee found that overweight people who drank milk thrice a day lost more belly fat than those whose milk consumption was lower. Also, besides providing high amounts of calcium, milk is one of the best muscle foods too.
Milk proteins can be broken down into – Whey (20%) and Casein (80%). While whey is a ‘fast protein’ and is quickly absorbed into the blood stream, Casein takes time to get digested and offers a steady supply of protein for your body. No wonder, body builders and sportsperson swear by the health benefits of milk.
So what is the best way to obtain the complete nutrition from milk, while keeping the various risks and dangers at bay? Health experts and nutritionists suggest that the best option is to consume milk other than animal’s (goat, cow, camel) milk.

Liver-Bile Duct Cancer Cured
an interesting case study: Liver-Bile Duct Cancer --- Herbs Kept Him in Excellent Health.
According to medical literature, median survival of liver cancer patients without medical treatment is 1 to 4 months. Prognosis worsens without increased tumour size. Patients with tumours larger than 6 cm have a mean survival of 3.5 weeks. Generally patients who come to us are often told that they only have 6 months to live.
In this case, Henry survived for 2 years without any medical treatment. He only took herbs. He continues to lead a quality life – without any pain, able to eat, sleep and move around like any healthy person. What more can such patient ask for?

Stay Happy and Healthy,
Drew carey : star gazing regain healthy weight,how?
Maybe they should call it The Weight Is Right instead of The Price Is Right, since the show’s host Drew Carey recently shed over 80 pounds through smart eating and regular exercise. His goal is to reach 170 pounds by October 31st. That’s 92 pounds less than the 262 pounds he weighed in November of 2009.
Because of his weight, Carey had an unhealthy heart and unhealthy blood sugar levels, but now he is strengthening his cardiovascular state and has balanced his blood sugar. Whether or not you’re a big fan of Drew Carey, you still have to admire that kind of weight loss, determination, and health turnaround.
If you take a look at what Carey used to eat in a day’s time, you will quickly understand how he got up to 262 pounds. A typical breakfast was an egg, sausage and cheese sandwich on an English muffin with pancakes, or steak and eggs on toast, hash browns and pancakes. Now his breakfast includes scrambled egg whites with a side of fruit.
Lunch wasn’t much better for the “old” Carey. He would eat a turkey club sandwich or tuna melt with French fries or an entire pepperoni pizza. Now he eats a turkey burger, steamed broccoli and a green salad with balsamic vinegar. He used to snack on a bag of chips, but now it’s an apple or some grapes. And beverages? Gallons—yes gallons—of soda and multiple cups of coffee with two sugars each were standard for Carey. Now it’s at least 64 ounces of water a day.
Carey, 52, is loving the new him. “This is how you’re supposed to feel every day,” he says. “This is what I should have felt like my whole life!”
It wasn’t easy, though, for him to start on this new lifestyle. The first two weeks were a detox period and Carey ate lean protein, lots of vegetables, some fruit, a few starches, vitamins and nutritional supplements, and at least 64 ounces of water a day. He felt like he wanted to “chew his arm off,” but by week three his food choices increased, including foods like mahi-mahi, lamb, goat cheese and even rice.
Carey also worked out six days a week—starting with 30 minutes of light exercise and progressing to 45 to 60 minutes of daily aerobic activity on a treadmill or elliptical machine. He lost weight at about 3 pounds per week, and by week 10, his doctor told him his diabetes symptoms had reversed and that he didn’t have to take any more medication for it.
Wow. What a shining star!
Speaking of shining…Gwenth Paltrow is spending time in the health spotlight, too, soaking up the sun—doctor’s orders. Here’s why: “My doctors tested my vitamin D levels which turned out to be the lowest thing they had never seen—not a good thing," Paltrow said. She goes on to say that she has osteopenia, thinning of the bones.
As a result, Paltrow is taking a high dose of vitamin D and has been told to spend more time in the sun. That makes sense, too, because adequate vitamin D is required for the body to absorb and integrate calcium into bone structure. Coming up short on vitamin D can lead to unhealthy bones, and in Paltrow’s case that’s exactly what happened.
Unfortunately, Paltrow isn’t alone in being vitamin D deficient. In fact, the Scientific American Archives of Internal Medicine (March 2009) says, “Three-quarters of U.S. teens and adults are deficient in vitamin D, the so-called sunshine vitamin whose deficits are increasingly blamed for all sorts of medical issues.”
You never know what you’ll find when you star gaze, but it’s great to see some shining examples of stars taking back their health.

K Deficit ?
A Very Special K
All in all, it’s a pretty special vitamin—and not just for its blood-clotting ability or its role in supporting bone health and heart health. Vitamin K also benefits healthy blood sugar levels.
Here’s the lowdown: People with a higher dietary intake of vitamin K—especially vitamin K2—are significantly less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes, according to a study published in the journal Diabetes Care.
But let’s back up the train a little bit.
Vitamin K refers to fat-soluble compounds called anphthoquinones. Vitamin K1, also called phylloquinone, is the natural, plant form of this nutrient, while vitamin K2, which goes by the name menaquinone, comes from healthy bacteria in the human gut as well as certain foods. Vitamin K3, called menadione, is the synthetic version of vitamin K.
Vitamin K1 is found primarily in dark-green vegetables like spinach and broccoli as well as fruits such as kiwi and avocados. In fact one serving of spinach or two servings of broccoli provide four to five times the RDA of K1, and most people do not get enough of this kind of vitamin K.
Vitamin K2 is found in meat, eggs and dairy products, and is also synthesized by the human body. K2 is the vitamin K that strongly supports bone and heart health, although K1 does as well. But there’s more to this special K—K2.
Vitamin K2 can be further categorized, including the MK-4 or the MK-7 variety. Most vitamin K found in the Western diet is of the MK-4 variety, but MK-7 is the most readily metabolized form of K2. It can be found most abundantly in natto, a fermented soy dish that’s part of the traditional Japanese diet. Natto is an acquired taste, though, so other sources of MK-7 include fermented foods like sauerkraut, fermented cheeses and dairy foods like grassfed butter and organ meats.
Interestingly, inadequate healthy intestinal bacteria supplies can keep a person from properly assimilating K2, so it’s a good idea to make sure your intestinal bacteria is sufficient by including plenty of fermented, probiotic-rich foods.
As far as K1 and K2 and blood sugar health, researchers found that both forms of vitamin K can support healthy levels of blood sugar. K2, however, is required in a lesser amount than K1 is. In short, vitamin K1 was needed at very high amounts to decrease diabetes risk, while each 10 microgram increase in vitamin K2 led to a decrease in diabetes risk.
Other benefits of this special K—K2—is that it is an excellent calcium regulator, able to move excess arterial calcium into bone tissue where it belongs and is needed, while removing it from the arteries where it doesn’t belong. Additionally, a shortfall of vitamin K2 can lead to arteriosclerosis and osteoporosis, while adequate K2 intake can support skin, brain and prostate health.
Pretty special, huh?

Are you a Gambler of Life?
Reproductive Roulette?
It’s a dire prediction and a bold statement, but nutrition and fitness expert and author of The Anti-Estrogenic Diet, Ori Hofmekler, says, "As a species, we’re on a fast track to extinction. In the past few decades, men have lost 50% of their sperm count, and within only one generation the average man's sperm count and testosterone have dropped by 20%. Women are no better. Staggering figures show that most women today are suffering from female disorders and three out of ten women between the ages of 35 to 60 will develop breast cancer."
That paints a pretty dismal picture, but there’s hope for taking back hormonal health. Here’s what Hofmekler has to say about how we got to this point.
If he had to boil it down to one area, it would have to be our over-reliance on highly processed, chemically ladened, industry based foods, goods and products. In a word: xenoestrogens. Xenoestrogens are artificially made endocrine disruptors that have the very real ability to mimic the effects of true estrogen and to negatively interact with our cells.
Our society’s weight problem may exacerbate this, too, since xenoestrogens like to lodge in fat cells where they become even more resistant to breaking down. With over two-thirds of the adult American population overweight or obese, that creates a lot of fat cells for these xenoestrogens to take refuge.
You can find xenoestrogens everywhere, too, including the most common areas:
• Commercially raised animals and animal products
• Canned goods and plastics
• Makeup, lotion, perfumes and other personal care products
• Pharmaceuticals, including oral contraceptives
• Products made of styrofoam
• Laundry and dishwashing detergents and cleansers
• Household cleaners and air fresheners
• Food additives and food preservatives
• Pesticides and herbicides
Unfortunately, many of us encounter more than one of these xenoestrogenic products on a daily basis, and that can lead to a negative synergistic effect from xenoestrogens that can cause problems at the cellular level.
So what can be done? As you might guess, Hofmekler suggests that we minimize the use of these endocrine disruptors as much as possible. You may even need to consult your healthcare professional about this, especially if prescription drugs are in the mix.
It’s important to maintain a healthy weight and blood sugar levels, too. As stated earlier, these xenoestrogens like the comfy lifestyle fat cells provide. Additionally, unbalanced blood sugar can provide a feeder system to increased fat storage. It can also decrease the ability for cells to detoxify and can interfere with proper hormone signals.
While you’re at it, incorporate a seasonal detox. By doing a quarterly cleanse, your liver and gallbladder work more effectively to transport excess estrogen out of the body. Be sure, too, that your body gets the nutrients it needs to remain healthy. Additionally, it’s important to support your pituitary gland with adequate rest, movement and nutrition, says Hofmekler.
And, finally, be sure to get plenty of exercise. It helps with detoxification (such as sweating), supports oxygenation of your cells, can balance blood sugar and can promote healthy hormones. Another perk is that exercise can help your body burn fat more readily and can metabolize excess estrogen.
Reproductive roulette is risky, so stop the hormonal havoc—while there’s still time.

From Jordan's Desk--Whacky Water
Our nation’s drinking water has become a surprising chemical soup.
Not too many months ago a New York Times article unveiled unwanted substances in our drinking water. According to the article, more than one-fifth of the nation’s water treatment systems have broken the Safe Drinking Water Act, leading to about nine million Americans being sickened.
Here are some of the substances the EPA has already found in our drinking water:
• Arsenic: A pesticide and wood sealant, arsenic can be deadly if ingested at high levels, while intakes of lower levels can put a person at risk for skin, liver, bladder and lung unhealth. More than 3 million Americans have been exposed to arsenic in their water since 2005.
• Uranium: Large amounts of uranium can lead to unhealthy kidneys. Three million Americans were also exposed to illegal amounts of this radioactive substance.
• Radium: At high levels, radium is carcinogenic and can affect bones, liver and breasts. Radium levels were 2,000 times the legal limit in some areas.
• Tetrachloroethylene: High exposure can lead to headaches, dizziness, confusion, nausea, unconsciousness and even menstrual problems for women. Drinking water in Ramsey, N.J. has allegedly had illegal concentrations of this substance since 2004.
• Lead: Lead-tainted water can lead to physical and mental developmental problems for kids and high blood pressure and kidney problems for adults. You may want to check your water for lead content. The EPA’s threshold for lead is 0.015 parts per million.
• Prescriptions and Personal Care Items: Prozac, birth control, makeup and shampoo all make their way to our water supply, too, causing ecological harm and possibly threatening human health.
Additionally, atrazine, an herbicide widely sprayed on corn fields in Midwestern states like Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi and Ohio, is said to cause human birth defects. "Atrazine ... appears to have effects during critical stages of fetal development," said Suzanne Fenton of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, a former EPA researcher.
Atrazine can also cause reproductive defects in amphibians and fish, including lowered testosterone levels and fertility in male frogs—many of which were chemically castrated or even turned into females following exposure to the chemical. The EPA says a “safe” level for atrazine is 3ppb (parts per billion), but studies say that levels as low as 0.1 ppb can cause developmental and reproductive problems. You can see why levels of 30 ppb—ten times the “safe” level—would have some Illinois residents up in arms.

Who wants to drink these? Not me.

If you ever wonder ...
Where Do Pets Come From?
A newly discovered chapter in the Book of Genesis has provided the answer to "Where do pets come from?"
Adam and Eve said, "Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us every day. Now we do not see you any more. We are lonesome here, and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us."
And God said, “I will create a companion for you that will be with you and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourselves."
And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve.
And it was a good animal.
And God was pleased.
And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail.
And Adam said, "Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal."
And God said, "I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG."
And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved them.
And they were comforted.
And God was pleased.
And Dog was content and wagged his tail.
After a while, it came to pass that an angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam and Eve have become filled with pride. They strut and preen like peacocks and they believe they are worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught them that they are loved, but perhaps too well."
And God said, I will create for them a companion who will be with them and who will see them as they are. The companion will remind them of their limitations, so they will know that they are not always worthy of adoration."
And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam and Eve.
And Cat would not obey them. And when Adam and Eve gazed into Cat's eyes, they were reminded that they were not the supreme beings.
And Adam and Eve learned humility.
And they were greatly improved.
And God was pleased.
And Dog was happy.
And Cat didn't give a shit one way or the other.

A Purrfect Tool for Healing
NOW YOU CAN TAKE BACK 1/2 THE AWFUL THINGS YOU'VE SAID ABOUT CATS!
In the latest issue of "Alternatives for the Health-Conscious Individual" by Dr. David Williams, he talks about some interesting research in vibrations. He says that researchers have found that vibrations or energy currents in the range of 20 to 50 Hz stimulates bone growth. The production of the body's natural anti-inflammatory compounds is increased.
Joint pain and swelling improves. Bone fractures heal faster, and weakened bones begin to strengthen and rebuild. In a section he calls "A Purrfect Tool for Healing" he writes: Some of the most amazing research that I've run across, however, deals with cats. A group called the Fauna Communications Research Institute in Hillsborough, North Carolina, recently started some very interesting research focusing on the possible connection between vibrational frequencies and healing. Researchers there began to question the purpose of purring in cats. I honestly hadn't given it much thought; I always thought cats purred because they were content. Apparently there's more to the picture. Cats also purr when they give birth and when they are under stress, caged, or severely injured. Since purring expends energy, it makes sense that there would be a reason for it.
In an unpublished study, researchers recorded the purrs of all types of cats, both domestic and wild. Cheetahs, pumas, ocelots, and other wild cats were recorded at the Cincinnati Zoo. Various domestic cats were recorded elsewhere. Surprisingly, when the frequencies of the purrs were analyzed, it was discovered that the dominant frequency for three species of cats' purrs was exactly 25 Hz or 50 Hz. These just happen to be the most effective frequencies for promoting bone growth and repair. (Only the cheetah didn't have a dominant frequency > at 50 Hz.) Everyone has heard that "a cat always lands on its feet." The amazing righting ability behind this saying undoubtedly accounts for the fact that cats routinely survive and completely recover from falls that would kill most animals.
In the late 1980s, vets studied the cases of 132 cats that had fallen an average of 5.5 stories from various high-rise apartments. Of those, 37% required emergency treatment, 30% required non-emergency treatment, and the remaining 30%, no treatment at all. Overall, 90% of the cats survived. (For what it's worth, the highest recorded fall survived by a cat was 45 stories.) Cats' remarkable ability to survive may also be based on the fact that their dominant purr is at the exact frequency that heals bones, muscles, and ligaments.
There's another old saying that's popular among veterinarians, "If you put a cat and a bunch of broken bones in the same room, the bones will heal." A recent study evaluated the various health problems presented by 31,484 dogs and 15,226 cats to 52 private veterinary clinics around the country. Lameness and disc disease were among the top problems of dogs and 2.4% were severely arthritic. Kidney and bladder problems were most prominent among cats, and there was no mention of bone, arthritis, or joint problems at all. (J Am Vet Med Assoc 99;214 > (9):1336-41) Hip dysplasia, arthritis, and ligament and muscle damage are all common to dogs, but almost non-existent in cats.
Even myeloma, a cancerous tumor in bone marrow, is practically unheard of in cats, yet quite common in dogs. Any vet will tell you how much easier it is to fix a broken bone and how much quicker one heals in a cat compared to a dog. Researchers at the Ontario Veterinary College in Canada made some interesting comparisons between dogs and cats regarding their complications from elective surgeries. They found that complications from castration were as much as 20 times higher in dogs than in cats, and the post-operative problems following ovariohysterectomies occurred twice as often in dogs as cats.
Breathing problems associated with heart disease are almost non- existant in cats, but common in dogs. Large skin-tissue grafts take quickly in cats, but often become necrotic in dogs. Historically, bone cancer is extremely rare in cats, but common in dogs. And the list goes on and on. Purring appears to be a cat's way of treating itself. Just like humans use shivering to warm the body, cats may purr at specific vibrational frequencies that promote healing in various parts of their bodies. While the researchers in the above-mentioned unpublished study found that a cat's dominant purring frequency might be at 25 Hz or 50 Hz, the range extended up to 140 Hz.
By changing the frequency of their purring, cats may be fine-tuning their healing abilities. In another section he writes: I've even seen reports where individuals claim they can stop their migrane headaches by lying down with a purring cat next to their head. Maybe we're finally on track to discover a logical explanation for these incidents.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > So go get a cat. You will be healthier and have a friend who really understands how you feel. Your cat won't care, but it will understand.
Elderly Cat & Dog Greatly Improved With Sea Salt
I have a cat who for the past few years has been extremely inactive due to bladder problems and a tumor on her leg. In addition to these problems, she is 18 years old and I felt because of her age she just couldn't get around much anymore. She would find a spot and stay there all day without moving except to go to her litter box.
She always slept on the bed but for the past two years or more she could not even make the steps. Several weeks ago I started putting sea salt in her drinking water. I made no other changes in her diet. Two days after I started this I came out of my bedroom and found her lying in the hallway (second floor).
She has been there every day ever since. A week ago when my great granddaughter slept over, I was next to her in bed reading a story when the cat jumped up on the bed next to us. she has not been able to do that either for at least 2 years. Fantastic improvement in this 18 year old pet.
I also have a dog who seemed to have lost control of his back legs. He is 14 years old. He couldn't jump up on the coach like he used to and had great difficulty going up steps. It seemed he didn't have any strength in his back legs.
I began putting salt in his drinking water also. After a few days I noticed he was moving around a little better. It took a few weeks but he was then able to go up the steps again. For two months I had been giving him glucosomine and a vitamin pill which seemed to help a little but much more improvement was seen after the sea salt was added to his water.
Thanks for your suggestion.
Two little Pomeranians came into my life. They were eight and ten years old. I noticed that their eyes were runny and red and their fur was dry. The male had a terrible cough that would take his front legs right down to the floor. The female's physical condition was not very good.
After spending a good amount of money at the vet's, Rusty still had an awful cough. The vet diagnosed him as having asthma! Asthma! No, I will not drug him, I told the vet. I started giving him sea salt in his water and noticed that in just a few days, he was much better. The watercure is not just for people. Man's best friend needs water and salt, too.
TWO DOCTORS AND A DOG BENEFIT BY WATERCURE
Our friend, Dr. Gary Weissberger, knew about the watercure for years but was too skeptical to try the “full” recipe, which includes the sea salt. He said he doesn’t like salt. When he began experiencing pain in his foot for weeks, he decided he should either go to the emergency room, or try the salt and the water.
Well, he tried the full recipe. Within the time it took for him to take a shower, the pain, there for weeks, had mysteriously disappeared! Still a skeptic, he began talking to others about his experience. Dr. Marcelletti, of Optimum Health with in Tannersville and Taylor was one of them.
Dr. M. has a pit bull, which was experiencing tearing eyes and has a tumor on his head. Dr. Marcelletti started putting the sea salt on his dogs food and in his water. The dog improved so quickly, he tried it for his own health challenges. Since trying it himself, he has seen improvements in his Crohn’s Disease and no longer has blood in his stools and is down to 2 eliminations a day.
He is sharing the watercure and sea salt (in small packets) with his patients. Everyone in his office is on the watercure and they are having great results. We will keep you posted about further improvements.
Hi! I am excited to read all about your discovery about salt and water!
I am going to start my new life with it right now! I can tell you that we always had sick fish in our "freshwater" aquarium. One day, after many trips to the pet store for advice on my dying fish, one knowledgeable employee suggested that I ad mineral salt to the water. I was taken aback, and well, I decided to try it as a last ditch effort.
After I cleaned the tank and added the necessary water conditioners, I slowly added the salt. I was waiting for the fish to start acting weird with this new addition. To our family's surprise, our fish were living healthy and stronger than they ever had before. I did not have to add any more unecessesary antibiotics.
I think people have been told salt is bad for you and it can be deadly, so we have come to not trust it in our diets. Your site has clearly changed my mind! As for me, I thought I had "sinus" problems for the last 25 years, and have been taking "sinus" pills for just as long. Well, I had had enough and decided to go to the doctor. Well I was seen by a male nurse who suggested that I try "nasal crom" which is a saline spray. After I week of using it, ALL of my decades of "sinus" went way with the wind. Never have I been so happy with that out of my life!
We as individuals must always question the "facts" that so called professionals give us as the "absolute" truths. Greed is behind so many things present in our lives, we must ourselves seek the truth to what is "good and beneficial" to our friends and family's well being. After we find these "hidden" truths, they should be shared with our fellow humans for their sakes. Why must some hide the truth from others so that he alone may benefit? Thanks for your strong desire to help yourself and others.
You will prosper greatly.
A friend of mine called and said they tried the watercure on their sand crab which was dying. They have had it for about 5 months and noticed it was not being active and that it seemed really sickly and slow. Deb's husband Michael said "why not fill the sink with water and add the sea salt and see what happens", so she did and left it in over night. She called me twice already to tell me that the sand crab is doing "unbelieveable". "It is like new! And having all kinds of energy!"
Just another story to pass along to let people know that it works for pets of all types.
On February 17, 2002, I wrote to you concerning my recently diagnosed 4 year old diabetic cat. She had been on 5 units twice a day of insulin. I immediately started her on the water cure. I put 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt in a jug and only refill her water dish with that water. It has only been a little over a month, and the results are dramatic.
She is down to only 3 units twice a day. She is a totally different cat---the classic diabetic warning signs are getting better all the time. She is not drinking excessively and is urinating normal amounts. Her fur is very beautiful again. She has so much energy and is always playing with the other cats, just like the good old days!
My family thanks you very much for caring so much about helping others, even animals!
I will keep you posted on her continued progress!!!
Take care!!!
Subject: Thank you for the water cure and celtic sea salt.
I wrote to you in January about my cat, Missy, who was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was the type of cancer that would not respond to chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Feeling so helpless and wanting to do something to prolong her life I saw your ad in the Times Leader about Pet cures. You gave me the number to contact the Grain and Salt Society and I immediately started her on the pet celtic sea salt. As of today, March 7, I have a happy, healthy cat who is back to jumping up on the bed and counters, racing up and down the hallways and keeping my two dogs in line. I wrote to you in January about my cat, Missy, who was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was the type of cancer that would not respond to chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Feeling so helpless and wanting to do something to prolong her life I saw your ad in the Times Leader about Pet cures. You gave me the number to contact the Grain and Salt Society and I immediately started her on the pet celtic sea salt. Well, let’s start out with the old Pomeranian. He was getting very bony on the top of his head, and on his rear by his tail. Now, it is all filling back in. He is still alert and more active than before. Now, it seems he’s hearing better because he barks at the wind. Haha! He is moving around more, rather than spending his days asleep.
My mother is feeling much better, too. Her senility is improving, and she is physically more active.
I put sea salt on the food of my four dogs and cats. Vets don’t really know what ails a pet, as our first dog was put to sleep because of cancer. He was fifteen years old. This was very hard on the family. Our pets are indoor pets. They are like our own companions and children.
I just had to write to let you know about one of my dogs, Harry. Harry had many lumps all over his body. The vet had only listed these lumps in his file as “masses to be watched.” A couple of these masses were as large as golf balls. Three days after starting the dogs on the sea salt, all of these masses were completely gone. He had had them for years, and it was unlikely that they would just disappear on their own. I credit the disappearance to the sea salt.
I am so glad that I happened to be listening to the Barry Farber show that Sunday about a month ago. I cannot thank you enough for the sea salt recipe.
My husband and I both continue to notice small, outside changes in our health. I am actually looking forward to my doctor’s visit in three months. I am hoping there will also be some internal improvements to my cholesterol and blood pressure. I also have an eye appointment next Monday. I will let you know if some of my floaters are getting smaller.
Thanks again,
My dog, whose name is Butch, had a torn ligament. He wasn’t able to walk up and down the stairs. I had to carry him. So, I decided to try the Water Cure. I figured I had nothing to lose, and in a matter of weeks, I saw the difference in him. Now, he runs up and down the stairs, and even jumps off my bed – thanks to the Water Cure treatment. Now, I started to take it for my arthritis.
Dear Bob,
In a veterinary oncology clinic I was introduced to your work by another pet owner. Unfortunately it came too late to save my beloved cat, but I did try. I didn't have the Celtic sea salt, but I purchased a high quality sea salt solution. My cat wouldn't drink the water I put it in. He walked away, time and time again. How are these other pet owners administering the salt in a way that actually gets it into their pets? I tasted the water myself and it was highly salty.
AND.. Does it need to be the Celtic salt? Also, what exactly is the proper dosage... particularly since it's not easy to insure what amount my pets will drink at any given time. (I had resorted to administering by eyedropper to my cat who had lymphoma)
Thank you for your work and this information,
Hello Denise
You may have salted the water too much. If your pet walks away, cut the salt in half. Also sprinkle a little on its food. Anyone having any problem, please contact me. Once a pet is well, there is no need to salt the water, just add a little to the food. A seriously ill pet needs the salt on both. Just make certain it is unprocessed, no additive salt. 50 or more mineral salt is best.
Our yellow lab, Jesse, chased a rabbit out of our yard tonight for the first time in a long while. We have been giving her 1/4 tsp of celtic sea salt in her 2 daily feedings and her limp and soreness in her legs appear to be gone. While she has never been high energy, she has a jaunt in her gait that she has not had for along time. We had her into the vet for her yearly physical and I made it a point to tell them about the water/salt cure. They appear to have an interest and did write the info down. I gave them the www.watercure2.com website address. Bob...I must tell you, I do not have many heros in my life, but you are one of them for your unselfish work. I truly appreciate your effort to help man and beast. I do believe that the reason the medical profession does not acknowledge this simple and natural cure, is that it would be an admission of the wrong works they have been doing and fear the consequences of their mistakes, not to mention, the error in their training. Please keep up your good works and know that you have a soldier in your army to help when I can....
Dramatic improvement to the point that no one would suspect she was troubled with arthritis just a short while ago. Thank you again Bob. Dear Mr. Butts,
I am writing to you today to give many many thanks to you for giving my precious dog the gift of life. My long haired miniature daschund didn't eat for 10 days and was diagnosed with Parvo. She lost 3.5 pounds and was given about 2 days to live. She couldn't eat or walk and her temperature was below normal. She was vomiting every half hour which I know would be painful for one that hadn't eaten for days and was bleeding badly while attempting to use the bathroom. I had decided to bring her home for her last hours instead of choosing to have her put to sleep. I took a day off of work and sat out in my yard on a beautiful day holding this beautiful, yet lifeless, 7 pound, 9 month old dog in my hands. My brother-in-law had called me once he had heard of this family joy having such troubles. He then suggested that I give her some of the salt walter that him and his wife speak so highly of. My mother then came to my home and brought me a gallon of mixed salt water. I had a syringe and gave her about a fourth of a cup every hour in small doses every 10 minutes, along with about 1 tablespoon of pedialite every 2 hours, and her vomiting ended and her bleeding ended immediately. I did this for 11 hours, starting at about 8am. That evening I had put her on the floor to see how weak she still was because she seemed to be wiggling more than usual. She slowly walked down the hall and actually jumped onto the bed and laid down. That was the first sign of actual strength she had shown for a couple of days. I believe in my heart that it was the sea salt that healed my dog. She was extremely tired the next day, sleeping the entire day, but I could tell just by looking at her body that she was healed. Her stomach was no longer sunk in and she was laying so peacefully. Then the next day, she was playing with her toys again.
So, please, if you know anyone that has a dog with this deadly disease called PARVO, please advise them to heal them with this miracle.
Thank you again,
Barbara
Sure, you can post my Email to you, but can you just use my name instead of Email address please. I'm not sure exactly how long it was when I noticed a change, I will estimate a month. My Cat is like a kitten again, except for the days when her age gets the best of her and our Dog is running around playing, still with a minor limp every now and then, but at least she's using her leg. I started them both the same time. I've mailed some of the salt for the animals to a friend in Mass, and we've given some of the salt to friends whose animals are having joint difficulties.
My dog was suffering with a major hip problem for probably a year before I heard about watercure, and my cat was running in and out of the litterbox probably every 30 seconds and there was just a drop of urine tainted with blood. I took her to the Vet for an overnight visit and they found nothing. I was afraid for her and was willing to try anything, she was going through that off and on for probably 6 months. They've been drinking salt water for 2 years now and they're doing great - butr I'd say I noticed a slight change about an estimated month or two! Our Dog's limp is gone and my cat is urinating normally. Oh yes, I'm telling everyone I know!
Thank You
Healthy Cow & salt lick
I sent the following e-mail to a Florida M.D. who wanted to know how salt could cure many pet's health problems.
In the past week I started talking to some farmers about how lack of salt affected them. I was told that first of all, all the food they feed their animals has salt & various minerals in it. Plus they are given salt licks to make sure they get enough. One farmer told me that without his cows would dehydrate. Another told me that if his salt licks run out his cows behavior lets him know. Meanwhile, while the farmers are feeding their cows salt, vets are telling some pet owners not to give them any salt. Drug companies have taken over the animals now as many of the same drugs given to people are now being given to animals. I think you'd find it very interesting if you talked to farmers about how they keep their cows healthy & compare that with what vets do. As far a I'm concerned this a mess caused by our insatiable money addiction which makes it impossible to for animals and people to to be protected from each other, health care and anything else where pain and suffering is highly profitable.
Hello Bob,
I was raised right across the street from a pasture that was part of a 50 to 60 head dairy farm. The farmer, Mr. Stevenson, was a very nice man, and always had some part time work for me whenever I wanted it. Besides raising dairy cows, he also raised and raced a few champion Standard Bread Horses, and he used the perimeter of this front pasture as a track for the horses to pull him around on a Sulky. I really liked Mr. Stevenson, as he was very soft spoken, never yelled or cursed, and he LOVED his animals, and treated and spoke to them as if they were people. He knew every animal by name, and knew their every mood and feeling. About 45 years ago, when I first started working for him weekends and after school, he had a better stereo for his cow's, then either he or my family did in our house! He said the cow's liked music, so they were going to have the best music possible, as well as anything and everything else. One of my favorite jobs was to deliver the salt licks, as I got to drive the tractor. For a 10 year old on top of a huge John Deere tractor, that was the best, as I was sitting on top of the world. As this was a very large farm, (he grew every drop of food for all of his animals,) I had a lot of salt licks to take care of, as he wanted one to be convenient to all of his cows, no matter where they were on the property. As nice and as kind as he was however, there was one thing that he would not tolerate, and that was an empty salt lick. No warnings, no excuses, and no second chances, I new the rules, and that was that! I will never forget those salt licks, or they responsibility I learned maintaining them. Some were pink, some were blue, and some were purple, but they all were heavy, and there sure was a lot of them. One thing I don't remember however, was seeing a vet at his farm. As I was only a part-timer, I suppose one could have shown up when I wasn't there, but I don't ever remember a sick cow either, in all of years I was there. Coincidence? I'll let you be the judge. For a long time, I thought salt was only for cows, until one day an unscrupulous hunter drove up, wanting to buy a salt lick. One of the only times I ever saw Mr. Stevenson mad, was when he chased that guy off his property. He said it was awful to take an animals basic instinct and craving for survival (salt), and use it against him in the form of a bait. I then learned that all wild animals have a natural craving for salt. How can nature be so smart, and yet man be so greedy as to knowingly deprive them of it, just to reap the profits from the diseases that follow? If that is not evil, then I don't know what is?
felines are fine after given sea salt
The cats are fine. They no longer beg for stuff we eat that's salty and they've stopped trying to drink out of the toilet. They don't try to lick me either. I'm still giving then double salt in their water. I can't believe how much water they drink! They go through a liter and a half every other day! One cat weighs about 7lbs. and the other about twice that and they're drinking 16.5oz of salty water every day! They must have read the book.
A lot of pets lives could be saved if people knew that the reason a pet licks us is to get the salt from our skin. they are salt deficient.
Isn't it something how medical research puts millions of animals to death in the process of trying to find cures for our worst diseases, and now we see sea salt curing pets of many of these same problems, yet these same researchers haven't the slightest interest? I don't even know of one vet who will say anything to his/her clients about how easy salt can cure pet arthritis 100% of the time. But that is no different when it comes to the water cure curing countless people of allegedly incurable diseases and not one researcher will even talk to us, even though our success rate is near 100% with some simple problems like asthma, allergies, chronic fatigue, depression, most pain and arthritis to name a few. Then again what financial incentive is there for anyone to endorse a solution to a high profit problem? Would you???? That's why we haven't cured one major health or other high profit problem in the last fifty years that I'm aware of. Dr. Dean Burk, an original founder of the National Cancer Institute said, "The more people making a living off cancer (that applies to any high profit problem) the more impossible it is to get rid of it."
she'd be fired if she didn't stop telling people about how her arthritic dog was cured of arthritis in a few days after getting the salt.
The following is a free solution to pet arthritis but will ruin the profit made on arthritic pets. Once you know this is true, you will understand that no matter how much money is raised to find solutions to high profit problems, they all get worse and more profitable.
Once you know this is true, please do all you can to get this information out to all the pet owners and pet magazines you can. On the other hand if you tried it without success, please contact me, Bob Butts at watercure2@comcast.net and let me know. I will get back to you and do all I can to help.
Because there are no incentives to eliminate any high profit problems in health or anything else, our pets aren't being given salt to cure their arthritis which is nothing more than a salt deficiency in pets and a water and salt deficiency in people. Arthritic pets can be easily cured in most cases within a few days using nothing but unprocessed sea salt. I have no knowledge of one single pet not being cured after unprocessed, no-additive sea salt was sprinkled on its food and added to its water. Despite my running countless radio & newspaper ads telling how easily pets are being cured, even a testimonial from a local police officer, not one single vet in northeastern Pa. will say anything publicly although one from Forty Fort, Pa. is telling his clients. They tell me they don't want to say anything as the vets will be angry with them. If pet food companies were responsible, they'd see that this salt was put in their pet foods. Any farmer knows what would happen to the health of his/her farm animals if they didn't have salt licks, but our pets are treated like people and put on salt restricted diets. There's lots of money in keeping people and animals unhealthy.
Even an SPCA president was told by medical people on her board of directors she'd be fired if she didn't stop telling people about how her arthritic dog was cured of arthritis in a few days after getting the salt. She and I went on the Barry Farber Radio Show and she told her story over 103 stations across the nation.
Check the testimonials below and see for yourself.
Your children grow up and leave home, but sometimes your pets stay even longer than your children. That was the case with sweet little Sassie cat and adorable Oscar dog. They were there after the nest was empty of children and the noise and activity and commotion that comes with them.
These sweet little animals wiggle their way into your heart and you are never the same. Sometimes it is difficult to discern the pets from the kids, they hold such a special place in your heart.
When Oscar was 13 he became sick. He lost his energy and developed arthritis in his hips and could barely walk. I had to carry him out to the yard and hold up his rear end so he could go to the bathroom. He could no longer jump on the couch and snuggle with me unless I picked him up and put him there. Sassie, our cat, was 18 and developed a liver problem as well as arthritis and had to be carried around and picked up and put in her litter box. The vet put them both on medications and said if Sassie wasn’t showing some signs of improvement in two days, I should consider putting her down. She gave Oscar a couple of weeks.
It was then that I heard about the water cure. I was skeptical because it seemed that if a vet couldn’t get the animals better, what chance did putting salt in their water and food have? I decided to try it and was overwhelmed by the results. In two days Sassie was walking on her own, coming into the kitchen. The third day she started eating on her own and in one week was coming upstairs again by herself.
Oscar had similar results. In four days he was standing on his own and in six days he was able to go down the steps to the yard to go to the bathroom without me holding him up. In one week, as with Sassie, he was jumping up on the couch by himself.
Both animals improved greatly to the point where I would say they were normal animals, living a life with quality. They both lived over another year in pretty good health. Sassie was 19 ½ when she passed away and Oscar was 14 ½. The water cure gave me another year to love and enjoy the pets who had touched my heart so deeply and brought me so much joy.
"BY MIDNIGHT, SHE WAS DANCING IN CIRCLES"
Hi Bob,
I have the 8 lb. Pom with a herniated disc and several other medical problems. I began the regiment of salt water using the Celtic Sea Salt in the water and on her food as you directed. She chose the bowl with the lowest amt. of salt (1/4 tsp.) and I have sprinkled a bit of the salt on her food (2/day.) Because of the herniated disc, both of her front feet would 'buckle' intermittently while walking and at times, she even fell forward onto her face. She had quit lying across my lap, as it seemed to be very uncomfortable for her to lay on her side.
The results are nothing short of a miracle! We began early Monday and by midnight (her last outdoor chore), she was dancing in circles and even attempted to jump on a 12" padded stool. She failed to jump but it was something she had not tried for months. Today, Thursday, she made the jump! She is walking without the front legs bending under and has even run a couple of yards - things she has not done since the beginning of this year. Her legs are still a bit weak but she IS walking with all four flat on the ground
There are no words to thank you enough for your invaluable information. She was not eligible for surgery because of a collapsing trachea, and would have eventually been unable to walk at all. I would also like to thank 'Ron' who gave additional information regarding the chlorophyll and omega 3, both of which I will introduce into her diet. She has always eaten raw beef/veggies and some fruit and I will continue with that diet.
I will certainly direct my friends to your site and will also share with the vets in my area. I was thinking an ad in our local paper would be a good idea too. My husband and I have some aches and pains and after seeing what it did for Tiki - we're on board too!
My heartfelt thanks to you again. I know my 8 1/2 yr. old Pom now has a chance to live a longer and healthier life - a huge relief for us!
God Bless you and all the others who made this product known.
Buddy and Chestnut (canines)
Buddy and Chestnut were lethargic, sleeping 80% of the time. When outside, they would just lie on the porch. With the pet watercure we noticed a change within a few days, and they steadily became more lively and enjoyable. Now they are a real joy, doing tricks and letting us know just what they want. They have found the wonders of the yard now and really put on a show. We have our dogs back. Thank you.
Sea Salt Cures Pet Arthritis & More...
We finally failed one time to cure a pet of arthritis & we tried everything we know. Since August 2008 we can only say we are 99% successful. Bob Butts
Pet recipe for the water cure. Just sprinkle some unprocessed sea salt on his food and give him three bowls of water, one with 1/4 tsp, 1/2 tsp & another with 3/4 tsp per quart. He will take the one he needs. Once your pet is well, the salt on its food should be enough. If, for any reason your pet doesn't get well, contact us at watercure2@comcast.net. When your pet is cured of arthritis contact every pet magazine and tell them.
cure your pet using sea salt
We find the best way to give sea salt to our pets is put it in the water for one week and then only on the food. One week should be enough to get your pet back on track.
In Loving Memory ....
IN LOVING MEMORY OF BONNIE
A light has gone out of the world with the loss of Bonnie. We know she brought joy to your lives everyday. Bonnie, your time with us was too short and you have left a terrible void in the hearts of those who knew and loved you. To know Bonnie was to love her. She loved everyone and always wagged her tail and greeted you with a great big vocal hello. She not only greeted you vocally, she spoke volumes with her warm loving eyes. Bonnie will be forever missed and the unbearable pain of her loss is a tribute to the unconditional love she gave so freely.
Someone once said that time heals everything. They must not have had a dog.
With the passing of our Bichon, Sunny, I grieved more than I grieved for anybody including my parents. I don't know if that was good or bad. I only know that it was. I loved my parents just as much as the next person. I was very close to my mother. The bond I had with my dog was unlike any other. I could only imagine that losing a child could be all that is worse.
When you have the companionship of a dog for many years you often think of how innocent they are and how much they really depend on you. When they hurt, you hurt and when there is nothing you can do to help them, you hurt even more.
Everybody is different and there is no right or wrong way to grieve. We wanted to grieve. We cried like babies. We canceled all of our appointments for days and stayed in our home and cried. We cried so much it hurt. We cried until there were no more tears to cry and then we sobbed. Don't hold back. That can't be good. Allow those emotions to flow. Get it all out. Take the phone off the hook and escape with all your memories. We found peace in looking at all the pictures we took of our Sunny Boy. You eventually get through the worst of it, although even to this day we could not talk about that saddest of days when we lost Sunny, without our eyes welling up with tears.
Someone once said that time heals everything. They must not have had a dog.
Bob, we certainly do not know how you feel. But, we do know this. These are some of the worst days of your life. We pray for you because we know that this is all we can do. Nothing, absolutely nothing, will ease the pain. Bob and Connie... you have our deepest sympathy.
For all dogs owners
Just have to share this wonderful news. Our yellow lab Jesse was having arthritis problems to the extent that the vet said she would have to get cortisen shots and whateve and was limping rather badly. At http://www.watercure2.com I learned of a simple , inexpensive almost 100% cure for dog arthritis using celtic sea salt and is called the watecure. I put 1/4 tsp of celtic sea salt in both of her daily feedings and a pinch in her drinking water. Tried it and now she is running up and down the stairs like a pup, she is coming up on 9 years old. If your pet is suffering from this or other ailments, please check out Bob Butts website. A most generous man who profits nothing from his efforts other than the good will he receives from those he helped, myself included. All he asked of me is to spread the good news. In fact at the chain of auto supply stores he owns, he gives the sea salt away to his customers he so dedicated to this healing method. I know this is way off the topic of this forum, but having seen pics of dogs in crisis on this forum, thought I'd chance making this post in hopes that others would benefit from it as my dog has.
Thyroid problems?
"An under active Thyroid may be causing you to gain weight!"
Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland fails to function adequately, resulting in reduced levels of thyroid hormone in the body. Cretinism is a type of hypothyroidism that occurs at birth and results in stunted physical growth and mental development. Severe hypothyroidism is called myxedema.
There are about 20 million Americans who suffer from hypothyroidism and thousands more who suffer without knowing what is wrong. Hypothyroidism is often misdiagnosed as depression, PMS, poor diet, or several other conditions. Doctors assume that every overweight patient is trying to blame their lack of diet and exercise on an under active thyroid. These doctors can be less than sympathetic to a patient who complains of difficult weight loss and slowed cognitive thinking. But you know your body and you know something is wrong.
Many experts now feel that blood tests do not accurately test for a low functioning thyroid. Have you been tested for hypothyroidism with a blood test, only for the doctor to tell you that everything looks normal? Many people have. Read over all the symptoms we have listed below, and make up your own mind about your own body. Chances are if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck.
Hypothyroidism is a condition that occurs when your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone. If your body isn’t producing enough thyroid hormone it can make your life miserable. You are tired, irritable, moody, depressed, you can’t concentrate and you feel as if you are losing your grip on your sanity and your life.
There are many causes of hypothyroidism.
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease of the thyroid gland and the second most common cause of hypothyroidism. The most common cause of hypothyroidism is medical treatment, such as surgery or radiation to the thyroid gland, to treat hyperthyroidism (over-activity of the thyroid gland). Some drugs, such as lithium and phenylbutazone, may also induce hypothyroidism. Extreme iodine deficiency, which is rare in the United States, is another possible cause. Failure of the pituitary gland or hypothalamus to stimulate the thyroid gland properly can cause a condition known as secondary hypothyroidism.
Some people with goiter (an enlargement of the thyroid gland) also have hypothyroidism. Goiter can be caused by an iodine deficiency, by eating foods that contain goitrogens (goiter-causing substances), or by other disorders that interfere with thyroid hormone production. In many cases the cause of goiter cannot be determined. While natural therapies may help to some extent, thyroid hormone replacement is necessary for most people with hypothyroidism.
What are the symptoms of hypothyroidism?
The symptoms of hypothyroidism vary from person to person, but commonly include several of the following. The onset of these symptoms may be so gradual as to evade detection by patient or physician.
The list below includes symptoms of hypothyroidism. You may be experiencing some or all of these symptoms in a wide range of severity.
*
You have problems losing weight and seem to gain weight without reason
*
You feel tired and weak
*
You are depressed and moody
*
Your hair is dry and rough
*
You become cold easily; being in cold weather is painful
*
You are often constipated
*
Your skin is dry and pale
*
You are easily irritated
*
You have problems remembering and concentrating
*
You have irregular menstrual cycles
*
You have a decreased interest in sex
*
You have muscle and/or joint pain
*
Your fingernails may be thin and brittle
*
Your face, hands, and feet are often swollen or puffy
*
You are clumsy or uncoordinated
*
Your hair is getting thin or falling out
Even though the weight gain seems to be the worst part of hypothyroidism, the depression, the fatigue, and the overall slowed body function can make you feel terrible, and the worst part is that these symptoms will continue to get worse if you continue to avoid this problem.
You may have already been tested for hypothyroidism and had the doctor tell you that your results came back in the “normal range”. But the truth is that conventional medicine does not have the best testing or treatment methods for hypothyroidism. Just because your test results came back negative for hypothyroidism doesn’t mean you don’t have it.
You probably have gone to the doctor with a list of complaints that all fall into the category of hypothyroidism only to have the doctor tell you your thyroid is fine, but you know there is something not right with you or your body. You may have had a doctor try and prescribe you an anti-depressant to treat your symptoms or suggest that you need to go on a diet as if you had never thought of that yourself. Many people with hypothyroidism have become frustrated trying to get relief. You may feel as if there is nowhere to turn, no way to feel better, no one willing to help. But there may be a solution to your problem after all.
Dietary changes that may be helpful:
Some foods, such as rapeseed (used to make canola oil) and Brassica vegetables (cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cauliflower), contain natural goitrogens, chemicals that cause the thyroid gland to enlarge by interfering with thyroid hormone synthesis. Cooking has been reported to inactivate this effect in Brussels sprouts. Cassava, a starchy root that is the source of tapioca, has also been identified as a goitrogenic food. Other goitrogens include maize, sweet potatoes, lima beans, soy, and pearl millet. While some practitioners recommend that people with hypothyroidism avoid these foods, none has been proven to cause hypothyroidism in humans.
Lifestyle changes that may be helpful:
Preliminary studies have found an association between multiple chemical sensitivities and hypothyroidism. One study found a correlation between high blood levels of lead, a toxic heavy metal, and low thyroid hormone levels in people working in a brass foundry. Many of these people also complained of depression, fatigue, constipation, and poor memory (symptoms of hypothyroidism).
Nutritional supplements that may be helpful:
The relationship between iodine and thyroid function is complex. Iodine is required by the body to form thyroid hormone, and iodine deficiency can lead to goiter and hypothyroidism. Severe and prolonged iodine deficiency can potentially lead to serious types of hypothyroidism, such as myxedema or cretinism. It is estimated that one and a half billion people living in 118 countries around the world are at risk for developing iodine deficiency.
Foods you can eat to boost your iodine
Today, most cases of iodine deficiency occur in developing nations. In industrialized countries where iodized salt is used, iodine deficiency has become extremely rare. On the other hand, iodine toxicity has become a concern in some of these countries. Excessive iodine intake can result in either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). Many nutritional supplements contain 150 mcg of iodine. While that amount of iodine should prevent a deficiency, it is not clear whether supplementing with iodine is necessary or desirable for most people. Those wishing to take a nutritional supplement containing iodine should consult a naturopathic doctor.
Laboratory animals with severe, experimentally induced zinc deficiency developed hypothyroidism, whereas moderate zinc deficiency did not affect thyroid function. In a small study of healthy people, thyroid hormone (thyroxine) levels tended to be lower in those with lower blood levels of zinc. In people with low zinc, supplementing with zinc increased thyroxine levels. One case has been reported of a woman with severe zinc deficiency (caused by the combination of alcoholism and malabsorption) who developed hypothyroidism that was corrected by supplementing with zinc.
Selenium plays a role in thyroid hormone metabolism. Severe selenium deficiency has been implicated as a possible cause of goiter. Two months of selenium supplementation in people who were deficient in both selenium and iodine was shown to induce a dramatic fall of the already impaired thyroid function in clinically hypothyroid subjects. Researchers have suggested that people who are deficient in both selenium and iodine should not take selenium supplements without first receiving iodine or thyroid hormone supplementation. There is no research demonstrating that selenium supplementation helps people with hypothyroidism who are not selenium-deficient.
Preliminary data indicate that vitamin B3 (niacin) supplementation may decrease thyroid hormone levels. In one small study, 2.6 grams of niacin per day helped lower blood fat levels. After a year or more, thyroid hormone levels had fallen significantly in each person, although none experienced symptoms of hypothyroidism. In another case report, thyroid hormone levels decreased in two people who were taking niacin for high cholesterol and triglycerides; one of these two was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. When the niacin was discontinued for one month, thyroid hormone levels returned to normal.
Desiccated thyroid, also called thyroid extract (e.g., Armour Thyroid), is used by some doctors as an alternative to synthetic thyroid hormones (such as thyroxin [Synthroid® or other brand names]) for people with hypothyroidism. Thyroid extract contains two biologically active hormones (thyroxin and triiodothyronine), whereas the most commonly prescribed thyroid-hormone preparations contain only thyroxin. One study has shown that the combination of the two hormones contained in desiccated thyroid is more effective than thyroxine alone for those with hypothyroidism. One doctor reported that thyroid extract worked better than standard thyroid preparations for many of his patients with hypothyroidism. Glandular thyroid products, which are available from health food stores, have had most of the thyroid hormone removed and would therefore not be expected to be effective for people with hypothyroidism. Intact desiccated thyroid is available only by prescription. Hypothyroidism sufferers who want to use desiccated thyroid must first consult with a physician.
People with hypothyroidism have been shown to have an impaired ability to convert beta-carotene to vitamin A. For this reason, some doctors suggest taking supplemental vitamin A (approximately 5,000–10,000 IU per day) if they are not consuming adequate amounts in their diet.
Herbs that may be helpful:
Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) is a type of brown seaweed that contains variable amounts of iodine. Hypothyroidism due to insufficient intake of iodine may possibly improve with bladderwrack supplementation, though human studies have not confirmed this.
Some Chinese herb formulations show promise for people with hypothyroidism. In one study, people with hypothyroidism were given a combination of Chinese herbs. After one year, symptoms of hypothyroidism were markedly improved and blood levels of thyroid hormones had significantly increased. In an animal study, administration of certain Chinese herbs raised thyroid hormone levels in the blood. Neither study listed the specific herbs used. People with hypothyroidism who wish to use Chinese herbs should consult with a physician skilled in their use.
More About Hypothyroidism....
You have tried diet after diet only to stay the same weight. You keep gaining weight little by little every month. You feel tired, sluggish, down in the dumps, and as hard as you try to fight it, you feel depressed. A properly functioning thyroid gland is extremely crucial for your metabolism and when it doesn’t work correctly many of your bodily functions can suffer. But now there is a solution that has helped over 68,000 people lift the dark cloud of low metabolism from their lives.
Imagine you are climbing a hill. If you actually make it to the top of the hill you will be at your desired weight, you will have the energy you should have at your age, you will be happy and feel healthy. Now imagine having to pull a boulder up this hill with you. Climbing the hill without the added weight is hard enough, but with this boulder it’s almost impossible. You are climbing the hill to be healthy, let us teach you how to remove your boulder and increase your thyroid production. You may never reach the top if you don’t.
Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland fails to function adequately, resulting in reduced levels of thyroid hormone in the body. Cretinism is a type of hypothyroidism that occurs at birth and results in stunted physical growth and mental development. Severe hypothyroidism is called myxedema.
There are about 20 million Americans who suffer from hypothyroidism and thousands more who suffer without knowing what is wrong. Hypothyroidism is often misdiagnosed as depression, PMS, poor diet, or several other conditions. Doctors assume that every overweight patient is trying to blame their lack of diet and exercise on an under active thyroid. These doctors can be less than sympathetic to a patient who complains of difficult weight loss and slowed cognitive thinking. But you know your body and you know something is wrong.
Many experts now feel that blood tests do not accurately test for a low functioning thyroid. Have you been tested for hypothyroidism with a blood test, only for the doctor to tell you that everything looks normal? Many people have. Read over all the symptoms we have listed below, and make up your own mind about your own body. Chances are if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck.
Hypothyroidism is a condition that occurs when your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone. If your body isn’t producing enough thyroid hormone it can make your life miserable. You are tired, irritable, moody, depressed, you can’t concentrate and you feel as if you are losing your grip on your sanity and your life.
There are many causes of hypothyroidism.
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease of the thyroid gland and the second most common cause of hypothyroidism. The most common cause of hypothyroidism is medical treatment, such as surgery or radiation to the thyroid gland, to treat hyperthyroidism (over-activity of the thyroid gland). Some drugs, such as lithium and phenylbutazone, may also induce hypothyroidism. Extreme iodine deficiency, which is rare in the United States, is another possible cause. Failure of the pituitary gland or hypothalamus to stimulate the thyroid gland properly can cause a condition known as secondary hypothyroidism.
Some people with goiter (an enlargement of the thyroid gland) also have hypothyroidism. Goiter can be caused by an iodine deficiency, by eating foods that contain goitrogens (goiter-causing substances), or by other disorders that interfere with thyroid hormone production. In many cases the cause of goiter cannot be determined. While natural therapies may help to some extent, thyroid hormone replacement is necessary for most people with hypothyroidism.
What are the symptoms of hypothyroidism?
The symptoms of hypothyroidism vary from person to person, but commonly include several of the following. The onset of these symptoms may be so gradual as to evade detection by patient or physician.
The list below includes symptoms of hypothyroidism. You may be experiencing some or all of these symptoms in a wide range of severity.
*
You have problems losing weight and seem to gain weight without reason
*
You feel tired and weak
*
You are depressed and moody
*
Your hair is dry and rough
*
You become cold easily; being in cold weather is painful
*
You are often constipated
*
Your skin is dry and pale
*
You are easily irritated
*
You have problems remembering and concentrating
*
You have irregular menstrual cycles
*
You have a decreased interest in sex
*
You have muscle and/or joint pain
*
Your fingernails may be thin and brittle
*
Your face, hands, and feet are often swollen or puffy
*
You are clumsy or uncoordinated
*
Your hair is getting thin or falling out
Even though the weight gain seems to be the worst part of hypothyroidism, the depression, the fatigue, and the overall slowed body function can make you feel terrible, and the worst part is that these symptoms will continue to get worse if you continue to avoid this problem.
You may have already been tested for hypothyroidism and had the doctor tell you that your results came back in the “normal range”. But the truth is that conventional medicine does not have the best testing or treatment methods for hypothyroidism. Just because your test results came back negative for hypothyroidism doesn’t mean you don’t have it.
You probably have gone to the doctor with a list of complaints that all fall into the category of hypothyroidism only to have the doctor tell you your thyroid is fine, but you know there is something not right with you or your body. You may have had a doctor try and prescribe you an anti-depressant to treat your symptoms or suggest that you need to go on a diet as if you had never thought of that yourself. Many people with hypothyroidism have become frustrated trying to get relief. You may feel as if there is nowhere to turn, no way to feel better, no one willing to help. But there may be a solution to your problem after all.
Dietary changes that may be helpful:
Some foods, such as rapeseed (used to make canola oil) and Brassica vegetables (cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cauliflower), contain natural goitrogens, chemicals that cause the thyroid gland to enlarge by interfering with thyroid hormone synthesis. Cooking has been reported to inactivate this effect in Brussels sprouts. Cassava, a starchy root that is the source of tapioca, has also been identified as a goitrogenic food. Other goitrogens include maize, sweet potatoes, lima beans, soy, and pearl millet. While some practitioners recommend that people with hypothyroidism avoid these foods, none has been proven to cause hypothyroidism in humans.
Lifestyle changes that may be helpful:
Preliminary studies have found an association between multiple chemical sensitivities and hypothyroidism. One study found a correlation between high blood levels of lead, a toxic heavy metal, and low thyroid hormone levels in people working in a brass foundry. Many of these people also complained of depression, fatigue, constipation, and poor memory (symptoms of hypothyroidism).
Nutritional supplements that may be helpful:
The relationship between iodine and thyroid function is complex. Iodine is required by the body to form thyroid hormone, and iodine deficiency can lead to goiter and hypothyroidism. Severe and prolonged iodine deficiency can potentially lead to serious types of hypothyroidism, such as myxedema or cretinism. It is estimated that one and a half billion people living in 118 countries around the world are at risk for developing iodine deficiency.
Foods you can eat to boost your iodine
Today, most cases of iodine deficiency occur in developing nations. In industrialized countries where iodized salt is used, iodine deficiency has become extremely rare. On the other hand, iodine toxicity has become a concern in some of these countries. Excessive iodine intake can result in either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). Many nutritional supplements contain 150 mcg of iodine. While that amount of iodine should prevent a deficiency, it is not clear whether supplementing with iodine is necessary or desirable for most people. Those wishing to take a nutritional supplement containing iodine should consult a naturopathic doctor.
Laboratory animals with severe, experimentally induced zinc deficiency developed hypothyroidism, whereas moderate zinc deficiency did not affect thyroid function. In a small study of healthy people, thyroid hormone (thyroxine) levels tended to be lower in those with lower blood levels of zinc. In people with low zinc, supplementing with zinc increased thyroxine levels. One case has been reported of a woman with severe zinc deficiency (caused by the combination of alcoholism and malabsorption) who developed hypothyroidism that was corrected by supplementing with zinc.
Selenium plays a role in thyroid hormone metabolism. Severe selenium deficiency has been implicated as a possible cause of goiter. Two months of selenium supplementation in people who were deficient in both selenium and iodine was shown to induce a dramatic fall of the already impaired thyroid function in clinically hypothyroid subjects. Researchers have suggested that people who are deficient in both selenium and iodine should not take selenium supplements without first receiving iodine or thyroid hormone supplementation. Brain Cancer Patient still lives
Brain Cancer – Yet She Lives !
CT, 42 years old, came to see us in September 2008. There was a tumour in her head. The neurosurgeon in a private hospital in Penang told the family that she must undergo surgery immediately. Without the surgery CT would become blind and paralysed. If she underwent surgery, there was no guarantee that she would be cured.
The family decided against further medical treatment and came to seek our help on 12 September 2008. CT was prescribed Capsule A, Brain 1 and Brain 2 teas, C-tea + Brain Leaf tea.
Two days on the herbs, CT’s condition improved and all pains were gone. She was able to talk better. She returned to her hometown, Medan, Indonesia. Two months later, CT came back to see us again. Her health was restored. After this second visit we never get to see CT again.
Some months later, we had news that CT was not well. Well, we thought this was it – the end of the story – since she had not been taking herbs anymore. In the meantime, we were rather excited about her healing story. This was yet another miraculous healing which we can share with you all. We made 10 video clips documenting her healing. But our efforts seemed meaningless since we didn’t even know what the end result was. These video clips were stored away – forgotten.
About two years later – June 2010 – CT’s neighbors came to our centre. They told us that CT was still doing fine. We were taken aback by this news thinking that she was not around anymore. Of course we were really happy and grateful to hear this news. On 1 October 2010, CT’s relatives came to see us. They again told us that CT was indeed well.
Let us follow CT’s healing story by listening to these videos which we thought would not have seen day light anymore. Our conversation was in Bahasa Indonesia. To help those who don’t understand the language, there is a brief English summary after each clip.
1. The Confirmation – CT Was Indeed Well After Two Years
Neighbours (June 2010)
· CT is still alive?
· Yes, she is healthy now and is teaching in her school.
· Thank God for everything – that she is well.
· At one time, she ate meat and became ill.
· Now if she walks in the sun, she gets headaches or become giddy.
Relatives (October 2010)
· CT came to see my husband in the hospital. She asked us to come and see you immediately. My husband has nose cancer.
· You have seen her? Is she alright? She said she will come to see you one day.
· I did not expect to be able to help her – it’s God’s blessing.
2. To Operate or Not To Operate?
· If no operation, she would be blind or paralysed. The operation cost about RM 18,000 to RM 19,000. Can operation cure her? No guarantee – not sure. If no operation, she would be paralysed. With operation would she end up pahttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifralysed as well? Don’t know!
· Do you want to operate? The surgeon said this must be done immediately. Decide quickly.
· Do you want to know the experiences of other patients?
a) For one patient, the tumour recurred and grew bigger than the initial tumour that was removed soon after the operation.
b) My friend’s wife was urged to operate immediately, although I cautioned him against this. After the operation she was paralysed and died soon afterwards.
c) Another patient had surgery. The tumour recurred. He had surgery again and again. After that this same surgeon told the brother. Please bring him home (to Jakarta, before he dies in the hospital)!
· I cannot encourage you to go for the operation. But I also cannot say: Don’t go for the operation. (This has to be entirely your decision. I cannot take responsibility for this decision).
· In whatever you do, the most important point is: Can you achieve a cure? But it is uncertain – there is no guarantee. Now, even if you take my herbs, I cannot guarantee that you can be cured.http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif
· So, what is your decision?
3. What to Do Now?
· I shall prescribe you some herbs. You can try drinking them. Let’s see if these will help you. Within 2 weeks, we should be able to know if they help or not. If the herbs help and you get better, continue taking them.
· There was this man, Ramli, from Aceh. He had brain cancer like you. He was also asked to operate. He refused and came to see me. He took herbs. After a week he came back – looking better and was able to sit down and talk to me nicely. Before that he was not able to sit and talk. He was full of anger. He went home to Aceh and was able to ride his motorbike and travelled over 100 km. After three months, he stopped taking the herbs. He suffered a relapse. Went to a hospital in Aceh, underwent an operation and died.
· So it is now up to you what you want to do.
· One important point: You must take care of your diet. You cannot eat anything you like. No meat, no sugar, etc for you. These are not good for your cancer.
4. Medical History
http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif
· For the past two months she had been having headaches. Her speech was slurry. One day she vomited and was unconscious. Later she developed severe headaches. They were so severe that she yelled in pain.
· I am going to give all the herbs that I have for brain cancer. From my experience these herbs help patients with such problem.
· God help you. So go home and talk to God.
http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif
· We should be able to know the outcome within two weeks. If there is no progress – then I really don’t know what else to do.
5. Two Days After the Herbs
· You came on Friday – only 2 days ago. How are you today?
· Look at me first before we talk!
· Okay, you looked better. Your face looks good and clear.
· No more dizzy! Blurred vision has improved!
· The surgeon told us that if there was no operation, within a week there would be bleeding and she would be paralysed.
· Thank God. Now we are on the right direction – proceed!
· What kind of fish can I ….? Wait first, wait first. I am not going to talk about food yet. Can I eat bread? Wait.
· Let me tell you this; All patients – when they are dying they will follow my diet advice. But when are get better they will want to start eating anhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifything they like!
· After taking the herbs for 2 days, how did you feel?
· I felt a “flowing” sensation in my left leg – like massage. I also felt the “flow” in my left side of the head. But there was no pain.
· Before the herbs, my face swelled a bit. After a day on the herbs, the swelling subsided.
6. Herbs are Bitter – She Vomited
· Are you better? You went home to Medan. Did you still continue taking the herbs?
· Yes – I took them three times a day!
· Was the herbs bitter? Oh yes, really bitter! I vomited for about ten times after taking the herbs.
· Brain 1 and Brain 2 did not cause any problem. It was the C-tea and Brain Leaf that made me vomit.
· That was strange, I thought it was the Brain Teas that were difficult to drink, not the C-tea and Brain leaf. I thought these were good tasting – I too used to drink them.
http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif
7.Diet – A Problem
· Initially, the diet was not good tasting doc!
· When I ate too much I vomited.
· She did not eat well, that made her weak.
· Can I meat mutton? Oh, no!
http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif
· It is important that you eat well. You cannot live without eating. But just eat proper food. Take a lot of fruits! Take beans, etc.
8.Gone Were The Pains and Anger
· I was amazed doc, the pains in my head were all gone.
· Previously you said there were severe pains.
· She was in severe pains. They had to tie her down while in the hospital. She could not control herself and was yelling in pain. For 8 days she was in pain and was always full of anger. She was angry with everyone. She was angry with the doctor, etc.
9.No Problem With Memory & Bodily Movements
· Let me ask you about your memory. Can you remember things? Any problem with your memory?
· Before she used to forget things. Now she is starting to remember things – her memory is improving. Before the herbs, the pastor came to visit her. The next day she could not remember the visit. Now it is improving.
· Now, can you remember your friends, what happened, etc. Yes!
· I just want to go back to work.
· Go back to school and teach again? Can you do that? Yes!
· Can you write? Can you read? Yes, I can.
· What about your bodily movements?
· I could not lift heavy things because I did not have much strength.
· What about walking, etc. Any problem?
· CT stood up – she showed us how to kick a ball! http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif
10. No Other Problems – Take Care
· Since the past 2 months that you were on herbs, did you experience any problems?
· Nothing much, but she always like to sleep.
· Of course, she needs to relax.
· Okay, think back – what could have happened if you were to have that operation.
· Honestly, I did not expect you would recover. I believe God helped you. At the same time, I have also encountered many similar experiences like yours with other patients. For example, Prapti. I did not except her to survive. But she did.
· I am indeed happy. Since the herbs helped you, continue taking them. Take care and God bless you.
· It is important that you eat well. You cannot live without eating. But just eat proper food. Take a lot of fruits! Take beans, etc.
8.Gone Were The Pains and Anger
· I was amazed doc, the pains in my head were all gone.
· Previously you said there were severe pains.
· She was in severe pains. They had to tie her down while in the hospital. She could not control herself and was yelling in pain. For 8 days she was in pain and was always full of anger. She was angry with everyone. She was angry with the doctor, etc.
9.No Problem With Memory & Bodily Movements
· Let me ask you about your memory. Can you remember things? Any problem with your memory?
· Before she used to forget things. Now she is starting to remember things – her memory is improving. Before the herbs, the pastor came to visit her. The next day she could not remember the visit. Now it is improving.
· Now, can you remember your friends, what happened, etc. Yes!
· I just want to go back to work.
· Go back to school and teach again? Can you do that? Yes!
· Can you write? Can you read? Yes, I can.
· What about your bodily movements?
· I could not lift heavy things because I did not have much strength.
· What about walking, etc. Any problem?
· CT stood up – she showed us how to kick a ball! http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif
10. No Other Problems – Take Care
· Since the past 2 months that you were on herbs, did you experience any problems?
· Nothing much, but she always like to sleep.
· Of course, she needs to relax.
· Okay, think back – what could have happened if you were to have that operation.
· Honestly, I did not expect you would recover. I believe God helped you. At the same time, I have also encountered many similar experiences like yours with other patients. For example, Prapti. I did not except her to survive. But she did.
· I am indeed happy. Since the herbs helped you, continue taking them. Take care and God bless you.
check food labels, before eating ....
How many of you actually check the food labels before buying a product? Do you know that many of the ingredients used in packaged and processed foods can be detrimental to your health? The artificial sweeteners, coloring, preservatives can all be incredibly hazardous for your health, and it is important to watch out for these while buying your groceries.
Here’s a look at the 5 Most Dangerous Food Ingredients that you should avoid as far as possible:
1.) Sodium Nitrite – Sodium Nitrite is a preservative that is usually present in salami, pepperoni, ham, bacon, hot dogs and other forms of processed meats. The reason why Sodium Nitrite is added to meats is because it preserves the red/pinkish color of the meat and gives it a fresh appearance, and also prevents botulism to some extent.
However when ingested in large amounts, sodium nitrite reacts with the stomach acids to produce nitrosamines, the main cause for cancer amongst animals.
Sodium nitrite consumption is also known to trigger migraine pains, and COPD form of lung diseases. Non-red meats such as chicken, tuna are comparatively safer as they do not have nitrates in them.
2.) Excitotoxins – Excitotoxins are basically amino acids that also function as neurotransmitters in the brain. But when brain cells are exposed to this chemical in large amounts (through dietary consumption), they become over-excited. During this stage, the nerve and brain cells fire their impulses rapidly until they reach extreme exhaustion, a near-death state.
Commonly found in canned soups, diet soda, sausages, salad dressing and processed vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods. Excitotoxins are used as a flavoring agent in most such foods, but an over-dose of it can destroy the nerve cells. Since the protective enzymes in a baby’s brain are not fully developed, they are unable to detoxify the Excitotoxins that enter its brain. This is why pregnant women and young children should completely avoid foods containing even small amount of Excitotoxins.
The two most common forms of Excitotoxins are – Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG) and Aspartate. Glutamate is a prevalent additive and is used in a many food products. MSG stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin, resulting in a drop in blood sugar levels. MSG can cause brain damage in children and lead to weight gain.
Aspartate is another excitotoxin that is widely used as an artificial sweetener in soft drinks, cereals, ice creams and so on. Aspartame (pre-cursor to aspartate) is known to cause various neuropsychiatric disorders such as panic attacks, mood swings, dizziness, blackouts and visual hallucinations
3.) Gluten – Recent researches have brought into light the various dangers that gluten can pose to human health. Gluten is the starchy substance found in wheat, barley and rye. Gluten contains Gliadin which is basically a form of insoluble protein that can trigger allergic reactions in certain people. Gastro-intestinal disorders result from Gluten intolerance.
Celiac diseases also known as Gluten Enteropathy, is a hereditary disorder of the immune-system. Consuming wheat, rye or other food products with gluten, trigger an on-going immune reaction in people suffering from this disease. Ingesting gluten in large amounts can cause irreversible damage to the protective mucus lining of the small intestine.
Approx. 90 million people in the United States are negatively affected by gluten, while 10 million are known to have gluten sensitivity. Gluten sensitivity can cause and aggravate conditions such as diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, osteoporosis, dermatitis, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis.
4.) BHA and BHT – Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) are used to preserve fats and inhibit the formation of yeast. Food products such as butter, chips, beer, cereals, dehydrated potatoes, meats etc contain BHT and BHA. Both BHA and BHT are antioxidants that oxidize the fats, thereby protecting the food products from going rancid.
However, ingesting these preservatives can cause serious health problems. BHT and BHA are known to cause metabolic stress, weight loss, liver damage, growth retardation and fetal abnormalities. These are also the cause of hyperactivity and other behavioral disorders in children.
Anecdotal reports suggest that BHA and BHT can increase the risk of cancer (suspected carcinogens) and get accumulated in body tissues causing several health problems. These are also known to cause liver enlargement and cell retardation. Up to 13% of BHT is absorbed by the skin, which can result in contact dermatitis and other skin problems.
5.) High Fructose Corn Syrup – High Fructose Corn syrup is known by different names such as Maize syrup, high fructose corn syrup, fructose, corn sugar etc. It is a high calorie sweetener used in processed foods such as ketchup, jams, bread, salad dressings, ice creams and even soft drinks. Corn syrup is made by an enzymatic process from the glucose syrup derived from corn.
Over consumption of Fructose can alter the intracellular metabolism and accelerate the aging process. Because it is metabolized by the liver, fructose causes imbalance in the insulin levels in the blood. Also fructose converts to fat more than any other sugar, leading to abnormal weight gain and obesity. It is also known to raise the serum triglycerides levels in the blood, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Keep the above mentioned “dangerous” ingredients in mind next time when you go grocery shopping. Avoiding these and other such unsafe preservatives and coloring agents can make a world of difference to your and your family’s health.
What's in a Name?
You heard right. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) has taken a beating lately due to its unhealthy effects—so much that the Corn Refiners Association (the makers of HFCS) wants to give it an alias. They want to call it “corn sugar.” The name may be changing, but the adverse effects of HFCS are still the same, so be on the lookout. High fructose corn syrup by any other name is still corn syrup—no matter what anyone says.
The Corn Refiners Association claims that corn syrup is the same as sugar, but it’s not. For example, Princeton researchers found that the consumption of HFCS caused tested animals to gain significantly more weight than the animals that consumed the same amount of regular table sugar. What may be even more astounding, however, is that the amount of HFCS in the study was much less than the amount found in one can of soda.
"Some people have claimed that high-fructose corn syrup is no different than other sweeteners when it comes to weight gain and obesity, but our results make it clear that this just isn't true, at least under the conditions of our tests," said psychology professor Bart Hoebel.
By now you probably already know that HFCS has been implicated in obesity, diabetes and in cancer cell proliferation. (Cancer cells gobble up high fructose corn syrup faster than they do regular sugar.) But that’s not all. HFCS also puts a heavy burden on the liver, is made from corn (which is often genetically-modified or GM), and is linked to heart disease and metabolic syndrome.
To top it all off, past studies have also found that at least half of commercial HFCS contains high levels of toxic mercury due to its extensive chemical refining. That could be problematic, too, since HFCS intakes can be high. On average, Americans consume about 12 teaspoons per day of HFCS, but teens and other high consumers can take in 80% more HFCS than average.
Dr. David Wallinga, of the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, who co-authored two revealing studies about HFCS says, "Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by the industry and the [U.S. Food and Drug Administration] to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply."
The first study co-authored by Wallinga, published in Environmental Health, states that researchers found detectable levels of mercury in nine of 20 samples of commercial HFCS, although a Corn Refiners Association representative refutes this.
The second study found that nearly one in three of 55 brand-name foods contained mercury and was found most commonly in HFCS-containing dairy products, dressings and condiments.
So, what’s in a name? Plenty.
The name change may take a while to finalize and requires approval by the FDA, but the Corn Refiner’s Association is busy crafting its marketing for “corn sugar.” The new slogan claims that "whether it's corn sugar or cane sugar, your body can't tell the difference. Sugar is sugar."
Apparently not.
