Zeki Tamer taught me French in junior high and high school, in Cincinnati Ohio, at Wyoming High. He knew I liked poetry and he had me translate the poems of Francois Villon, the medieval French balladeer. He was the most unusual teacher in the school. He ate fruit and nuts and coached track and fencing. He wore European suits. He was, I'm sure, the first Muslim I ever met, but he never made much fanfare of his religion. He was a spritely person with a strong personality. His handwriting, on the blackboard in chalk, was exquisite.

Zeki Tamer initiated me to fencing during my AFS scholarship year at Wyoming High School in 1962/63. He also got me interested in long distance running. Since my mothertongue is French and he taught that language at Wyoming H.S., we developed a special relationship during the year. Unfortunately I did not keep in touch with him in later years. But I still remember him vividly.

Zeki was in Lafayette Louisiana in 1985. We met at The Acadiana Mall. I drew his portrait. We even worked out together and ran some around Cajun Field. I still have the portrait... It might be my best work. He told me his story... He showed me photos.. He shared his philosophy with me. Among his many qualities and things he has done, he told me he was a water boy during world war one for a Turkish artillery unit.
